Does Brad Holmes needs to speak on the release of CB Terrion Arnold.
Transcript
00:00We'll get some of the tiger calls in the mix, but I want to play some audio for you and
00:04then a couple of responses to it.
00:07So Dan Campbell addressed Terry and Arnold, who kind of, sort of, maybe might go to Seattle.
00:14I mean, Mike McDonald had basically said if and when he gets here.
00:19I mean, that's generally a good idea to say it's a maybe when someone's facing eight felonies and up to
00:25life in prison.
00:26I digress, but I want you to listen to what Dan Campbell had to say about Terry.
00:31And then I want to just take you through a couple of things and see if we can find a
00:35level of common ground.
00:36David, do you want to play the audio?
01:20Good, good dude.
01:22I was thinking more.
01:23Are you sure about that?
01:24Yeah, I can offer you one of those, too.
01:28So where do we begin?
01:30Well, for one, it would have been nice if the media followed up with if he's such a good dude.
01:35Why did you get rid of him?
01:37See, that gets back to this town being empty chair city.
01:41Where was Brad Holmes to stand up and take the heat for his first round pick getting released?
01:46Now, more on that in a minute.
01:48The problem I have is you can't leave Dan Campbell to answer all these questions because God love him.
01:54He's too honest.
01:55You can't say a guy facing life in prison and eight felonies is a good dude.
02:01Can't do it.
02:03You might think it.
02:04Can't do it.
02:06That's like saying I'd love to have a beer with him.
02:07Can't do it.
02:09But second of all, if he's such a good dude, why'd you get rid of him?
02:13Well, we know why you got rid of him.
02:15You got rid of him because he sucks and he ain't worth the trouble.
02:18See, if he was a really good football player, the answer to that question would be, we don't comment on
02:23ongoing investigations.
02:25We hope for the best.
02:27But this is my problem in all of this.
02:30Do you know what a ridiculous piece of audio that is?
02:33It is because all he had to do was stop talking.
02:37He said enough and the microphone was still there and it was silence and he felt like he had to
02:43feel that silence and that's when he came up with the good dude.
02:46But he's up for a lot of charges and these are pretty bad things.
02:51This isn't a speeding ticket.
02:53This isn't he ran a red light.
02:56This is, you know, basically he's being accused of holding people captive and robbing them.
03:02This is not a good dude territory.
03:03Where was the follow up?
03:05How was the very next question not then why did you get rid of him?
03:10I mean, that's not curing cancer.
03:12It's a very basic, you know, A to B thing.
03:16My main angst.
03:19Look, I can't ask Dan Campbell not to be who he is.
03:23He's too honest.
03:24But where's the effing GM?
03:26You're the guy who released him.
03:28Stand up there in your villain sweatshirt and answer a question.
03:32It's the same damn thing with the Red Wings.
03:34Where is Chris Illich?
03:35You launched Steve Eiserman into space.
03:38You had a report come out last week that says your organization's a circus.
03:42Gonna talk?
03:44This town is empty chair city.
03:47Yeah.
03:48The problem is, and it's funny because Dan said he wanted to make sure the Lions didn't get to this
03:54point.
03:55But he's there.
03:56They fell in love with their own players.
03:58So because he has fallen in love with all his players, he can't say anything bad about them.
04:03He can't say, this is an unfortunate incident and I'd rather not talk about it.
04:08I wish him well.
04:09How about no ill will?
04:10No ill will that a guy you used a first round pick on is facing life in prison.
04:16I don't have any ill will.
04:18Even if you did, don't say it.
04:20Just say that you did.
04:21But don't say that you don't.
04:22But you're correct.
04:24When you lose your first round selection, that's a general manager.
04:29That's where you have to come up because you need to.
04:32What did you see?
04:33What did you not see?
04:34How did he fool you?
04:35At what point did you not want to go out and get his backup, his replacement?
04:40This is the other problem with the good dude.
04:43Here's what I think happened.
04:45My personal opinion.
04:46He lied to them.
04:48He lied to the team.
04:50And he's not good.
04:52So you know what they did?
04:53They released him.
04:54Don't say he's a good dude.
04:56He came in and hoodwinked all of you and somehow you were dumb enough to believe him.
05:02He lied to the team.
05:04Allegedly, he lied to the team.
05:05By opinion.
05:06Right.
05:07But I think the team then buried their head in the sand and said, should we follow up on this?
05:15Nah, let's just go ahead and believe him.
05:17You know, we can get some PIs out here to check.
05:20No, no, no, no.
05:20Well, he said it was good.
05:22The point is they knew enough when he was facing life in prison to get rid of him.
05:27So why do I have to listen to he's a good dude?
05:30I have no ill will.
05:31First of all, why is Dan Campbell talking about it when it's the GM's job?
05:34The GM made that decision.
05:36This is what I cannot stand is how, whether it's Harris, whether it's Holmes, whether it was Iserman, or whether
05:44it is sleep-inducing Trajan, no one has to talk in this town.
05:48I was going to say, the same thing happens with A.J. with the school ball stuff.
05:52A.J. got barraged with questions he could not answer.
05:55And we knew he couldn't answer them.
05:57But he still talked about it because he knew Scott wasn't going to come out and say anything.
06:02Dan was right there in front of the media.
06:04And you're right.
06:05He's one of those guys.
06:06He reminds me a lot of Tom Izzo.
06:08So they're honest.
06:09But sometimes they're honest, too honest, to a fault.
06:12And they keep talking.
06:14And it's the stuff that they say when they should end the soundbite that gets them in trouble.
06:19And for him to say, he's a good dude.
06:21His answer should have been, I'm not commenting on a guy who's no longer with us.
06:25Yeah.
06:25Next question.
06:26Well, why'd you cut him?
06:27Not getting into that?
06:29That's for Brad.
06:29Next question.
06:30You can't do what he just did.
06:33I mean, you can because there's no accountability in this town.
06:36But it's stupid he did it because that's his guy.
06:40And he's always his guy.
06:42And he feels like it's unfortunate.
06:44And it sounds like a part of him wishes he was still with the team.
06:47That, man, Tarion, if you just didn't do that one thing that night, you would still be a lion.
06:53Or it makes you wonder if he agreed with the decision.
06:56But we'll never know because he wasn't asked.
06:58And second of all, the GM doesn't talk.
07:00But don't worry.
07:01If things go well this year, he'll be sure to peacock in front of everybody
07:05and have his receipts.
07:06See, because that's the major problem here.
07:09I have to literally search for the last time the GM spoke, which was draft time.
07:14And that's every team in this town.
07:17Oh, hey, I guess I read your mock draft.
07:18I took a defensive end.
07:20Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo.
07:21How about win a playoff game?
07:23You signed Jack Campbell.
07:25He didn't speak then.
07:26You released Tarion Arno.
07:28You don't speak.
07:29David, you released a first-round pick facing life in prison, and he didn't speak.
07:33What's worse, that or getting rid of Steve Iserman, and you don't speak.
07:38That's what this town is now.
07:40It's still Steve Iserman.
07:41But you released your first-round selection on a draft that may be the worst draft
07:47you've seen in a long time, where you got mahogany and rake straw?
07:54Question mark?
07:56But this is where he needs to step up, and he needs to come out there and say,
08:00hey, this is why we let him go, and we found this out, and we're going to move on.
08:07And please, after this, we're not going to have any more discussion upon him.
08:12But, yeah, that was just a strange comment to make it seem as if, yeah, you know,
08:18he got a speeding ticket doing, you know, 60 in a 55-mile-an-hour zone.
08:23Like, no.
08:24My question is, do you want to hear from Brad Holmes, or do you just not care?
08:30Because I will say it again.
08:31It is not a common occurrence to have a first-round pick from just two years ago,
08:37be released, and be facing life in prison.
08:41Then the player is taking visits with other teams he has not signed with another team.
08:47Even Mike McDonald said, if and when he ends up here.
08:51But the GM has never, and the coach has never had to answer a question,
08:56why was he released?
08:58If he's such a good dude, if he's such a likable guy, if it's so unfortunate.
09:04What's unfortunate?
09:05Hold on a second.
09:06Unfortunate is you went to answer your phone and fell down the stairs.
09:11That's unfortunate.
09:12What's unfortunate about facing life in prison where it sure seems like you played the role of Don Corleone?
09:19This is the same crap the media did with Michigan when they cheated.
09:23It's not adversity when you cause it.
09:27Like, come on.
09:30So it drives me crazy because Brad Holmes should have to answer these questions.
09:34Don't leave it to Dan Campbell.
09:36I don't think that's fair.
09:37But the fact that Dan said what he said and there was no follow-up thereof, then why release it?
09:48I see where you're going with this because you're right.
09:52In hindsight, it should not have been Campbell up there speaking because I don't think that's – this is above
09:58his pay grade.
09:59He's no longer a member of your team.
10:01I would like to hear what Brad has to say about that.
10:04And it kind of comes with the job, Brad.
10:07I mean, you can't be the villain and wear the T-shirts and only come out when it's convenient for
10:12you.
10:12Sometimes you have to do the hard thing.
10:14Sometimes you have to say the things that people want to hear, whether you want to say it or not.
10:19Hey, guys, I know 2024 draft so far looks like a failure, but we will make up for it here,
10:26X, Y, and Z.
10:28You're not getting that.
10:29You got Campbell talking about it.
10:31And, yeah, this was something that probably should have been a no comment, can't talk about this.
10:36We'll talk about Detroit Lions, and that's it.
10:38Please, let's move on.
10:39And, again, if you have questions about the personnel decision being made, that's a Brad Holmes thing.
10:45Because, look, this is where – you still say Illich needs to talk more than Brad Holmes.
10:51I think it's just a push.
10:53I think it's both.
10:53I think it's a complete laugh factory that an NHL franchise got rid of the legend with a boilerplate statement,
11:03and the owner hasn't had to talk.
11:05Then you get an expose in the free press telling you it's a complete circus.
11:09Then you have an NFL team here, right, the hottest team out there playing the most popular sport.
11:14The general manager makes the call to release the first-round pick who's up on eight felonies.
11:21Never has to answer for it.
11:23The head coach goes out and says he's a good dude, like it's a line from the big Lebowski.
11:29And there's no follow-up then.
11:30If he's so effing special, why is he not here?
11:34No, to talk about what you just said, the Chris Illich thing, to me, is still more damning
11:39because what that tells me looks like, seems like, feels like, you still have no direction,
11:45so you can't come and talk to the media because you don't really know what to say to them.
11:51Because the obvious question is, well, where do you go from here?
11:55We're going to be a more analytics-driven organization.
11:58Me and Steve met.
11:59We couldn't find common ground.
12:01He'll always have a place in the Red Wing family.
12:03But we have got to become data-driven.
12:05That's not where Steve wanted to go.
12:06So, next question.
12:07When did you decide you want to be data-driven?
12:10When I met with Steve face-to-face.
12:11We had had differences for a while.
12:13This was the cleanest path.
12:15Rico, this is not brokering peace.
12:18No, no, I understand.
12:19I mean, do I hear, do I hear, let's do role-play.
12:22I'll be Chris Illich, okay?
12:23Like, I can handle the assignment here.
12:26So, when do we get another general manager?
12:30ASAP, but we're going to do a thorough process inside and outside of this organization.
12:35I mean, Rico, this is not hard.
12:37I understand, but he doesn't want to answer these questions because-
12:40Too bad!
12:40Too bad!
12:41Hey, what about doing Larkin?
12:43Is he, is Larkin still your cat?
12:45Like, you're going to ask these questions.
12:46Nobody wants to answer questions.
12:47Being an adult is doing a series of things that you don't want to do every effing day.
12:51I understand.
12:52If you don't want to answer those questions, don't own a team.
12:55It's really not hard.
12:57You can do lots of things as a billionaire that requires you to answer no questions.
13:01But when you own a public product, you have a civic duty.
13:06I mean, my God!
13:08I'm with you.
13:09You think the guy who's up on a roof today is there because he wants to be?
13:13No, being an adult is doing things you don't want to do.
13:16Hey, I get so tired of this.
13:18Answer a question!
13:21You're right, unless you work in the city of Detroit.
13:24Well, there you go.
13:25Up next, another training camp report about how some goofball who won't be here is in the best shape of
13:30his life.
13:31Good night, guys!
13:31And, let's wait.
13:31And, let's get started now!
13:31I had a ton of ideas.
