Would you give Larkin a standing ovation?
Transcript
00:02We want to know if you would forgive him.
00:04Good morning.
00:0597.
00:05One Jim Costa, John Jansen, Heather Park, Gov and Paul Sarah behind the glass.
00:11Paul put some audio in from McGonagall last night.
00:14We'll get to that at 802 Tigers win.
00:16They're currently in a position, right?
00:21What is seven teams within two games?
00:23How many times we should we should have a running number of how many times we wake up
00:27and we could say, well, if the season ended today.
00:30They'd be in the playoffs.
00:31But what about this upcoming six games straight?
00:33Right.
00:33Yeah.
00:33I mean, there's so many things.
00:35It's just it's it's at least we're in the conversation of our team being in the mix.
00:41Yeah.
00:42We did get a text.
00:43It says, please, no more six game referendums for this team.
00:47Like Tom, earlier in the show, you said there's a stretch in mid-September where they're going
00:51to play at Toronto and at the White Sox.
00:54Yeah.
00:55That's what's going to determine this seven game stretch.
00:57You're probably right.
00:57Because none of these teams are going to get out of each other's way.
01:00Yeah.
01:00That's what the conclusion I came to after this weekend.
01:03And I truly believe under 500 getting a wild cards in play.
01:07I'll just say this because I know we're going to talk Tigers more later.
01:11You have thrown it out.
01:13The American League's bad enough that I think you can at least ask the question.
01:15I have a hard time like groveling and begging as a fan to get in as a loser.
01:20Have a winning record.
01:21Have a little bit of a little bit of pride here, guys.
01:25If they're not if they're not a 500 team, they're not playoff team.
01:28And that's been the history of baseball.
01:30Let me ask you guys this because you brought this up about a an NFL team making.
01:35I know we want to move on to it and forgiving a player.
01:38We got four hours.
01:39You're good.
01:41But you brought up the NFL.
01:43There have been teams that have made it with a losing record.
01:48Which would be worse?
01:50Or how would you perceive this?
01:52If the Tigers get in at 80 and 82 versus the Lions being eight and nine and getting into
02:01a playoff position is don't in football, don't we say just get in?
02:05Well, I think it's team dependent.
02:07Doesn't it feel like if the Lions got in the playoffs with this nucleus, you'd say, let's
02:13see where the cards fall.
02:14The Tigers are still a pretty young and flawed team.
02:17If they get in, I don't think it's really going anywhere.
02:20Yeah, but everybody always says, I mean, if you get in with a losing record, should you
02:23do you even belong?
02:24And I understand that question.
02:26Like you didn't even do enough in the regular season to win more games than you lost.
02:30I also just have the belief that someone's going to win their way in.
02:33There are seven teams on the bubble within two games.
02:35This is kind of like two years ago in hockey when we had the soft bubble.
02:39Yeah.
02:39But do you win your way in with a losing record?
02:41I know.
02:42I think someone's going to win their way in with a winning record.
02:44Winning.
02:44Winning.
02:45We keep score.
02:46We're going to keep track.
02:46They're going to win.
02:47Someone's going to win their way in.
02:48And I hope it's our Tigers.
02:50I don't have any conviction in that, given how one six-game stretch goes compared to the
02:54next six-game stretch.
02:56Guys, every single coach in sports, in the history of sports, would say, you'll always
03:00take getting in the tournament.
03:02Of course.
03:02And things can happen.
03:04And I would argue that, you know what?
03:05This is bound to happen in baseball.
03:07With the 16 playoff field in each league now, the 82 and 80 Padres got in.
03:12That's the worst record ever.
03:14The 83 and 79, wasn't that what the Cardinals were when they beat the Tigers in the World
03:18Series?
03:1984 Rangers won it.
03:21It's only a couple more wins.
03:22You still want to take getting in.
03:24You hit that reset.
03:25You put some pressure.
03:2684 win Rangers, not the 84 Rangers.
03:28Yes.
03:29Don't soil our season.
03:31You knew what I meant.
03:31Exactly.
03:32I'm a little confused what we're doing right now.
03:33Yes.
03:34I would rather than make the playoffs than not.
03:35Is that the question?
03:37Yeah.
03:37But I mean, we always get it and you kind of alluded to this earlier where like, if
03:42you can't have a winning record, then then basically why go?
03:46Well, I just don't want to have this mentality of like you say, and I don't think you're
03:49unreasonable.
03:50Can this team just please get to 500 so I can feel good about them making the playoffs
03:53and some people.
03:55Well, you might not have to get.
03:57Why are we lowering the standards even more?
03:59I would ask you this is you still you take it and you go.
04:02It's the experience for a young team.
04:03Some of these guys, they get playoff experience and then also, you know, what are the two
04:07most random sports where some an anomaly can win it or make a run?
04:11Probably hockey and baseball.
04:13Exactly.
04:13Like I go back.
04:14I remember the 91 North Stars got to the finals with 68 points.
04:19You know, you take the shot and you run with it, especially baseball's had a history of
04:23this recently as much as of course you've had a lot of anomaly champions mixed in with
04:28the Dodgers three championships the last several years.
04:30I guess maybe I could say this way.
04:32I don't want to lower the bar.
04:33I think you're going to have to be 500.
04:35I think it's a fair bar.
04:37It's more than a fair bar and it's also something this team can achieve.
04:41Yeah, they can.
04:43Will they like last night?
04:45Good.
04:45Okay.
04:45We're getting too far down the rabbit hole.
04:47Last night was eventful.
04:48We'll get into it at 802.
04:50That's whenever this Larkin conversation ends.
04:53John, you were right.
04:56I want to stick up for you yet again.
04:58John Jansen continues to have his finger on the pulse of Detroit sports.
05:02I like it when you say again.
05:04You were right.
05:05Again.
05:08Careful.
05:08We're going to have to get you.
05:10I'm going to break my arm, bet myself on the back.
05:13Dylan Larkin.
05:14Will he be back?
05:15Well, Bob Duff says yes.
05:18Yes.
05:18Dylan Larkin will be there at training camp.
05:22John, will people forgive him?
05:25That's going to be the big question.
05:26What is, when he takes the ice, what's the response going to be?
05:30Because we did this topic, I don't know, I guess it's been six weeks ago now.
05:34It's been, when did he actually declare that he wanted to be traded?
05:37It's been a long time.
05:39It's almost been a month since, since Iserman.
05:41It's two months.
05:43June 4th was Larkin.
05:44Iserman was July 15th.
05:46Right.
05:47So.
05:48Yeah, because Larkin tried to declare his independence a month early.
05:50Right.
05:51Wait, when you, would you boo, your piece of work, would you boo Dylan Larkin?
06:01And then we said, well, are the boos for him or are they actually for Steve Iserman?
06:07And now all of a sudden, hey, there's, everything's been thrown up in the air.
06:13And I've always maintained that I think Dylan Larkin is still part of the Red Wings when they
06:18report to training camp.
06:19Um, it's been complicated.
06:21And actually when, when Iserman was, was relieved of duty, I almost flipped and said, I think
06:27it's more likely that he is traded now, but now we're a month into a search for a new
06:32GM.
06:33Do we think that he gets hired today?
06:37And is there even enough time to consummate a trade between two teams?
06:43Like, I don't, I don't even know if that's possible anymore.
06:45So I do think that I still think he is a part of the Red Wings and I think he's
06:49a part of
06:49the Red Wings this season for maybe he's a trade deadline guy that, that gets moved.
06:55That's the, to me, the most likely scenario.
06:58If he's not going to finish the season as a Red Wings, you've been saying it as our very
07:02own Barry Melrose from the jump that, that Larkin would be here.
07:05And I think he called it.
07:06I don't think this is a surprise report.
07:08When I read Bob Duff saying, hey, he will not hold out.
07:12He will be at training camp.
07:14He's not foolish.
07:15He's a lot of things that people have tried to label him, but he's not foolish.
07:19Larkin will be there when training camp starts.
07:21It makes the most sense.
07:23They don't have a GM to trade him.
07:25It's late in the game to have any trade go through.
07:28And as far as the locker room goes, those guys know their best chance to win is with him,
07:33not for spare parts they would get for him.
07:36He's the only center on the roster.
07:40So yeah, I think people are going to have to get with it.
07:44Now, will they?
07:46That's our question to the listeners.
07:47Can you forgive this man if he's skating in the very first game of the season?
07:51See or no see separate debate.
07:53How do you feel about Larkin being on the team when the season begins?
07:562, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
07:59I think his teammates have come to grips with it.
08:01I think the new GM is going to want a little bit of time to evaluate.
08:03He's going to show up and what, have to thread this needle?
08:06I bet you he sits and waits a little bit.
08:08And then the roster, roster is what it is.
08:12They punted this offseason.
08:13There's nothing that can be done about it now.
08:15I think there's a handful of ways that people could view this.
08:20And I mean, I do want to hear from Wings fans, 2, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
08:25When you hear this report that Dylan Larkin most likely is going to be a part of this roster,
08:30he's going to be a part of this team when they take the ice at the LCA to start the
08:33season,
08:34what type of emotions does it stir?
08:36Because there are some that I think are going to see this as,
08:40hey, he pushed this team to do something that was uncomfortable.
08:44They finally got rid of their general manager.
08:47They're moving on.
08:49And you might celebrate them for that.
08:51Hey, it's the start of a new era.
08:53And we can start it with Dylan Larkin.
08:54They are going to be better with him than they will be without him.
08:57There are others that are also going to be there and sit there and say,
09:00he's a complainer.
09:01He was a jersey, like Todd McClellan had talked about.
09:06He is a guy that you signed a contract.
09:09You tried to back out of it.
09:11It's, you know, you turned your back on Detroit and no, we're not going to take you back.
09:16I want to know where the fans land.
09:18It's so funny.
09:19I just took a little peruse of the text.
09:21And we'll get the phones in the mix too.
09:25Would I boo Larkin for requesting a trade from a pathetically run organization over the last decade?
09:30No.
09:31Larkin will get a standing ovation.
09:33Steve was the problem.
09:35Detroit knows that.
09:37I think you're going to be in a situation where in any given section or any given row,
09:43you could have one person sitting next to another one and one of them is actively booing Dylan Larkin
09:50while the other one is giving him that standing ovation.
09:53Could you imagine?
09:54Oh, I think, I don't know that we need to imagine it.
09:56I don't know, that's right.
09:57You know what I mean?
