Is it the right move for the Lions to play their starters against the Washington Commanders.
Transcript
00:01Tuesday's mean two grand slam chance to win some money coming up at 725 less than an hour away
00:07Saturday going to be the Lions next preseason game we expect to see some of the starters
00:14and it's going to be it's obviously a pivot for Dan Campbell and it's the reason he's pivoting
00:23is is I think twofold one there's no inner squad scrimmages right you're not going to have you
00:29know Washington coming to town and a couple of days of practice against them so that's where they
00:34were getting a lot of the work for the starters preparing for the regular season you don't have
00:40those anymore so you're kind of going back to a days gone by where you've only got three preseason
00:48games now so which game do you decide that you want to play your search we saw Cincinnati do it
00:52in the first game I don't know what what they're going to do in games two and three we've always
00:58seen Patrick Mahomes play in preseason games I doubt we see that this year because he's recovering
01:02from the ACL but the philosophy is at some point in the in the preseason you've got to get good
01:09on
01:09good and you don't necessarily want to do that practice because you're not getting the work done
01:15that you really want to get done you'll do it in small spurts but you need to see it more
01:21at game
01:21speed now preseason games are not NFL game speed there's a ramp up there's a difference between
01:26preseason game speed and and regular season there's a difference between regular season week one and
01:31week 17 for playoff teams and certainly when you get to the postseason there's a completely different
01:37speed and you've got to start ramping up now the other part is uh you you don't want to get
01:48players
01:48hurt but you have to build a callous you've got to be able to withstand and understand what it is
01:57like to play in that type of environment these guys have to at some point play together O-line D
02:03-line
02:03linebackers D-line like you have to be able to get that that build up and this is a much
02:09younger team
02:10last year you had Anzalone you had you know some some guys some fragile guys and you wanted to make
02:17sure that you got the most out of them when you got to the regular season now what did we
02:20see this
02:21offseason it was a youth movement some of those guys weren't renewed some of them were traded away
02:27some of them are just they're just no longer here and you've got a much younger roster it's even more
02:32important for that young roster to get that experience in the game yeah I'm trying to think some of the
02:37vets that are gone so you mentioned Anzalone, Kalief Raymond, Taylor Decker, Graham Glasgow
02:42yeah all of these guys that you know they raise the age the average age of the team and we
02:47always
02:47talk about now the Lions have one of the younger teams in the NFL well younger guys recover quicker
02:53are a little bit more bendy uh than than the older guys so you're not as worried about some of
02:59those
02:59injuries it's it's obviously the thing you're guarding against it's why they didn't play their
03:04starters in the preseason each of the last couple seasons right this is deviating from the plan
03:09dan campbell said a significant amount of starters will play saturday uh he also said not everybody
03:15will play that is that golf they don't need to see golf when you say not everybody's going to play
03:21who do you think would be left out someone with a nagging injury yeah I mean that'll be jmo's shoulder
03:26popped up on the report the other day that's going to be really interesting to see who those starters
03:31are that won't play is it jameer gibbs right you know um because you know I mean he's not a
03:39guy that
03:40you need to see but does does he need a rep or two at game speed with this new offensive
03:45line I would
03:46I'll be a little surprised if golf didn't play because what did we talk about yesterday it's that
03:54you know getting the feel of in you know different centers so if juice grugs starts the game or no
04:00matter
04:00who starts the games if it's seth mclaughlin then the quarterback that cq exchange like you're
04:06always working on the nuance to who that center is yeah so I'm just curious where they'll draw the
04:14line because dan campbell didn't do this two years ago when they won 15 games right so why is this
04:22the
04:23right choice now because I often thought it was better and believe the coaching staff when they said
04:27it was better to have teams come in for joint practice because the belief was you could target
04:32specifics you want to run four minute offense two minute offense you want to run red zone offense
04:37you want to run red zone defense I can cherry pick and create the scenario with window dressing at
04:44practice best on best quick whistle exactly what I want to see and then remove all other risk
04:52John they might not get four minute offense they might not get two minute drill they might not get
04:56end of half right so you are taking that injury risk into this preseason I think instead of doing
05:02the joint practices why why I don't want to talk out of both sides of my mouth I liked the
05:06joint
05:06practices so then I can't say say a year later this is also the right move well it's it's the
05:12right
05:12move because it's apples to oranges you don't have those joint practices anymore so you don't have
05:18is that better because that's what we said a year ago it was better to do it two years ago
05:22if you can't get through a joint practice without multiple fights and it slowing things down or both
05:30coaches eventually saying all right we've got to back off then you're not getting that work done
05:35that you thought you were going to get done now you could do that in the games because typically you
05:41don't have those fights in games right lions fans hearing this I think there's a few questions
05:48do you want this do you want to see significant starters play on Saturday what's the wisdom behind
05:54it and and who would be the guys you don't need to see I Campbell said not everybody will play
05:59I
06:00don't think you'll see Jameer Gibbs golf to me is kind of a coin flip I do think that you'll
06:07see him
06:07just because he's going to have to work with the center um maybe a series or a series or two
06:13and then
06:13maybe you see that offensive line go a little bit further with Josh Dobbs or Luke Altmaier
06:18probably more Josh Dobbs at this point now he's had another week of of practice and it's extended
06:23week because it's Thursday to Saturday um Hutch on defense you probably won't see him that's that's
06:30a pretty much a known commodity and I don't know that they they will need to see that do I
06:34need to
06:34see Amon Ra so the oh the argument for seeing Amon Ross St. Brown is do you want to put
06:44Amon Ra out there and if Jameau is able to go if he's whatever the situation is if it's a
06:50little
06:50bit of a bruise and you know hey let him go because you want to put Tesla in that three
06:56position and not
06:57have him as a one option like he's never going to be running those routes and so he was asked
07:03to do
07:03something that he's not going to do in a game now that has nothing to do with the ball going
07:08right
07:08through his hands multiple times it's about how the offense is going to look and some of it's going
07:13to be for Drew Petsing like what does this look like I need to be able to see what this
07:17looks like
07:17at game speed because now I'm preparing for New Orleans I'm preparing for Buffalo I'm preparing for
07:22the Jets I've got to make sure that we hit the ground running for my offense especially without
07:28Cade Mays text feedback coming in spots on the phones 248-539-9797 and as we wrap the hour up
07:36there's a ranking detailing how bright the future is of every team in the NFL we'll tell you where
07:41the Lions are it's 97-1
