00:00Text on the Tigers, little Michigan football, and then we get to a pivot.
00:04Dan Campbell, change of plans, 635.
00:08Good morning, 97.1.
00:10Your feedback on the Tigers this season, we compared it to a roller coaster.
00:14It's a top thrill dragster.
00:16Some days we're going on a heck of a ride with lots of excitement.
00:19Other days we're stuck at the top for 30 minutes.
00:22Feeling pretty dang disappointed.
00:24That's a good one.
00:25I agree.
00:26Agree with John.
00:27I need 500 Dan in Plymouth.
00:30Four rookie position players played yesterday.
00:33Eight combined hits.
00:34Seven runs batted in.
00:35Poised for great things in the future regardless.
00:39Good morning, fellas.
00:40Great show.
00:40How about we win the division and not squeak in again?
00:44It says they had the opportunity to do it.
00:46Now they've got to win eight or nine out of 11.
00:48It's just that simple.
00:50Well, at some point, you start running into the paradox that I live in of the importance of the next
00:57six games.
00:57A text on another six game reference from Jansen.
01:00You got to be kidding me.
01:01No, I didn't make that reference.
01:03I didn't make that reference, but I pointed it to mid-September.
01:06Yeah, but the joke is it's always a six game stretch.
01:09Yeah.
01:09It's just my point is you're running out of runway and you better take off or else it's going to
01:17be a disaster.
01:19But this year, it can't be a disaster because you sold at the deadline and you're playing with house money.
01:25Hey, they're not going to get left holding the bag.
01:27They do have a young core of the best young core they've had in my lifetime.
01:31It's not the best team of my life, of course, but a young core that I haven't seen in my
01:35lifetime.
01:35So look, I'm of a house money camp, not freaking out.
01:39And I do think you got to get to 500.
01:41I think you got to win your way in.
01:43Someone will win their way in.
01:45Did the Tigers have a better chance than any of these other teams in the bubble?
01:47Not really.
01:48Everybody's kind of just bunched up.
01:50But that's why they play the games, John.
01:53Michigan football yet to play a game.
01:55Preseason rankings are out.
01:56The AP has them checking in 16th.
01:5916th.
02:00Yep.
02:00Same as the coach's poll, which I think is about appropriate.
02:04I don't think there's any world where you can make an argument that they should be higher than that.
02:11I mean, if anything, you can make an argument that they'd be lower.
02:14But then you look at the teams that are behind them.
02:15You've got Washington and the issues that they have inside the team with the quarterback.
02:21And how is that sorting itself out?
02:24And then you start talking about talent.
02:26Penn State, I think, is a complete wild card.
02:29The team that I think is getting completely overlooked.
02:31And I mentioned it to you earlier this morning.
02:34Iowa.
02:36You keep telling Michigan fans, don't sleep on that game.
02:39Don't sleep on Iowa.
02:40That's the first Big Ten game that Michigan will play.
02:44And I go back to what they were last year.
02:48They've been an anemic offense.
02:51But they play tough at home and on the road.
02:57They were at Oregon and took them all the way to the final drive of the game.
03:03They had Indiana right up against the ropes, the eventual national champion last year,
03:08and took that one right to the wire as well.
03:11Now, they are a team now that has finally gone to the portal.
03:15They got themselves a quarterback.
03:17I don't know what that means because none of us know Josh Hoover for Indiana.
03:23What does that mean?
03:25Right.
03:25I don't know.
03:26They have a bit of a track record, though.
03:27Rourke, two years ago, got him into the playoff.
03:30Mendoza won them the Heisman in the national title.
03:32I think they're kind of getting the benefit of the doubt that it's going to look good.
03:34Right.
03:35And I think it's probably the benefit of the doubt the other way that Iowa is 22
03:39because are they actually going to be able to score any points?
03:42Who knows?
03:43Yeah, that's always the question with Iowa.
03:46I thought it was interesting that Michigan is the fourth Big Ten team.
03:50Did I count that right?
03:53Fifth.
03:53Fifth.
03:54Yes.
03:54USC is just ahead of them.
03:56And you would think four Big Ten teams would make it in.
04:02And the question is, if you're going to get a fifth Big Ten team in.
04:08Let's not get greedy, John.
04:09Well, it's possible.
04:11I know we're the best conference, but come on.
04:13But what would that record have to be?
04:17And what would some of the wins have to be?
04:20Yeah, you'd have to have.
04:20Because a 9-3 record, you could make an argument if you have a win against Ohio State at the
04:28end of the year.
04:29That's one of your nine wins.
04:31Or at Eugene.
04:33Now, I'm not sitting here predicting any of those.
04:35No, no.
04:35But those are the type of things that you would need to get in as a team with a lesser
04:38record.
04:39Michigan plays a daunting schedule because they do go to Columbus, to Eugene.
04:43They're going to face Indiana.
04:44They're going to play Oklahoma.
04:45Yeah.
04:46But much like the Tigers, you're going to have to beat somebody.
04:49You're going to have to beat someone.
04:51Win your way in.
04:51The other one, I mean, I say you're sleeping on Iowa.
04:54They're at 22.
04:56Penn State.
04:57I continue to say that's a playoff team.
04:59Now, some of it is they don't play anybody.
05:01Like, their schedule's weak.
05:02They don't play Oregon.
05:03They don't play Ohio State.
05:04They don't play Indiana.
05:05No.
05:05And their non-con is soft.
05:06That team should win 10 games.
05:08Penn State should be a playoff team this year.
05:09Well, and they should be, by the time they actually play someone, USC is the first team they play.
05:14They play them right before they play Michigan.
05:15And is that going to be a situation where, hey, Matt Campbell and his transfers from Iowa State, all the
05:22transfers that they've remade that roster, does it take them?
05:26Against lesser opponents, they'll rack up some wins.
05:28But to be able to gain footing, gain rhythm, gain consistency, then all of a sudden, hey, I think it's
05:35week seven or eight that they play USC and then Michigan.
05:40Back-to-back weeks, middle October.
05:42Right.
05:43Are they then, which every college football team will be, better at that point than they were at the beginning?
05:49And now all of a sudden, hey, they've got some confidence.
05:51They've got some momentum.
05:52Do they find a way to beat USC?
05:54And then all of a sudden, hey, they've got Michigan.
05:56And what is Michigan at that point?
05:57We have no idea.
05:59That could be a pivotal game, a swing game.
06:01I mean, Michigan has enough of them as it is.
06:03It's more of a game for Penn State because they're not going to have a lot of tests this season.
06:08No, and it's going to be in the big house.
06:1024 players over from Iowa State, including their quarterback, who has the most wins of any active player.
06:16It worked for Indiana, and those were guys coming from JMU.
06:20I'm telling you, I'm not promising anything close to a national title, but I think Penn State's a playoff team.
06:25All right, before we get to Dan Campbell and the pivot and the change in the Lions' plans, let's get
06:29to Heather with the news.
