Is this a make or break season for Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes?
Transcript
00:00all right karshen anderson i completely agree on the backup quarterback spot i think it is one of
00:05the strangest things if i were to be critical of brad holmes and and nobody's perfect i feel like
00:12the lions have under-invested in the backup quarterback spot every year and they've gotten
00:17away with it i mean the teddy bridgewater thing teddy bridgewater seemed like a long shot when
00:23they signed him i do think altmeyer has some real potential and we thought that uh out of
00:29illinois we made those comments when the lions signed him uh josh dobbs is everybody's favorite
00:35backup but he sees like it feels to me like he'd probably be in the lower third of backup quarterbacks
00:39in the nfl um yeah i don't get it i don't get it they've been fortunate and that golf has
00:46been
00:46really durable and then they've taken care of him but at the end of the day it is a risk
00:52that i don't
00:52need a backup quarterback that i think is going to win a super bowl i need a backup quarterback that
00:56can close out a game when you've got a when you're nursing a four-point lead in the second half
01:00and
01:01your quarterback gets knocked out well i think they've had that and i think teddy bridgewater in
01:05the past was that guy and i think that worked out and then this year you've got a new offensive
01:10quarter so it makes sense that they go with a backup quarterback who played in that system so
01:16i think they're fine this year i don't worry about it too much um that being said
01:22you know we we have we each of us on the show has our quarterback that we that we latched
01:27on to
01:27that we like that could be perhaps in backup quarterback mode at this point in their career
01:33and i'm not conceding that yet with malik willis no malik willis looks great um and we'll see what
01:39kind of opportunity he really he's going to get and he's going to start so he's got that chance but
01:44you know my guy is uh has been zach wilson and who was taken by the jets early on and
01:51and obviously
01:51didn't work out with the jets now he is on his i think his third team with the new orleans
01:56saints
01:57and he uh played the other night in their preseason game he won 11 out of 16 for 145 and
02:03a touchdown
02:03i'm still have hope and someday zach wilson can be a guy and kang's guy is uh trey lance
02:11yeah i'll take anyone not named anthony richardson at this point he sucks
02:15but uh yeah i mean it was you know they played all right the other day yeah trey yeah oh
02:21richardson
02:22yeah get some turnovers i mean he can he just needs experience it's not going to happen for him
02:26over with the the colts obviously he's battling to just make the team at this point but uh the
02:30backup quarter position i think the lines i know you it looked like they neglected it for for a few
02:36years there doug but they went out and got a guy they trusted and then he went and retired
02:39on and so he seemed like a long shot to begin with he was coaching high school football no but
02:44then he came back no that was the when they brought him back for the playoffs but he came back
02:49last year
02:50he was in the league yeah you know but there was a reason why he was out of the league
02:54but he came
02:55back he did come back and then so they didn't grab him from a second stint as a high school
02:59football
02:59coach and they just wanted someone they can trust they need someone that they can go in there and be
03:04like hey you know the terminology you could run the offense right now that guy's probably
03:09josh dobbs who i consider the greatest break glass in case of emergency quarterback there ever was in
03:14the history of nfl you can call him off the couch and he'll come in and like win a game
03:18somehow like
03:19i don't know why i think he's like really smart too so i think he just adapts to any situation
03:23any
03:23playbook naturally but that doesn't last very long and there's a reason why he's been on a million
03:28teams he's really smart he's like a rocket scientist right yeah my boy yeah all right two four eight five
03:34three nine ninety seven ninety seven let's get back to your phone calls brian in detroit hello brian
03:40hey hey fellas how y'all doing we're good how are you oh good man golf campbell homes are very
03:46good at
03:47what they do but you can't come off first round player off loss then mr playoff totally but they this
03:54season got to prove it the regular season not gonna do it they need a win in the playoff not
03:58a
03:58buy they need a win in the playoff they're very good at but they it's hard to tell you will
04:04have
04:04negativity when you're in last place you're not gonna convince everybody that the future is bright
04:09is the lions future bright i can see it but it's got to be done on the field and you
04:14got to have
04:15success in the playoff this year don't have don't have not have a win this year and keep telling me
04:20the future is bright we need results we can't keep living off that nfc championship game no i
04:26agree with brian i don't think anybody would disagree with that i i agree with it they need
04:31to win a playoff game this year for sure you got to get back on the right track rack on
04:34the right
04:35trajectory which is winning playoff games because it's been downhill since the nfc championship game
04:40i talk a lot of negativity about them but they they are good at what they do but it's got
04:45to be
04:46done on the field this year not next year it's got to be done we just need a playoff win
04:51this year
04:52and then we back to doing you you might not win the super bowl but a playoff win proves you
04:57your
04:58future is bright not getting to the playoff and not have a win your future not bright i think you're
05:03right i don't think anybody would disagree with that 248-539-9797 christopher in fallerville
05:10you're on 97.1 hello christopher hey guys how are you what's up hey uh it's kind of a hot
05:18take but
05:18bear with me uh if you wanted to compare who we have with luke altmeyer at backup and jj mccarthy
05:25backing up for the vikings uh i couldn't think of a better place for mccarthy to end up you know
05:31u of m guy and then back up in the state of michigan um and i would far and above
05:36take jj mccarthy
05:37over luke altmeyer as a backup uh 10 out of 10 times i probably would too but you'd have to
05:43pay
05:43him you'd have to assume this the contract you'd have to assume the vikings are wanting moving him
05:49too yeah which they probably then they would be looking for a backup quarterback well they have
05:53carson wentz i mean it looks like we're also on that team you know they got rid of sam darnold
05:58they
05:58you thought that jj would come to the forefront and they picked up kyler murray i don't think that i
06:02see
06:02jj ever starting and what better way to have him sit behind golf you know learn the scheme he would
06:07fit pretty well uh when he's healthy he's a he's a weapon so i know that we'd have to give
06:12up some
06:12you know capital to do it but it it might make sense in the long run otherwise we don't have
06:16a
06:17you know quarterback prospect after golf yeah i mean i i don't think their quarterback prospect
06:23after golf would be altmeyer at this point it's not a promising start but i don't think his career is
06:29over necessarily the question is do they want to pay a backup quarterback six million dollars
06:34and i i would guess that's probably more money than they want to spend um highest paid backup
06:42quarterbacks in the league it would make him amongst them uh but uh you know do i think he is
06:50would be worthy of a opportunity somewhere to sit in the right situation and learn yeah yeah i think i
06:58think there's some truth in that but but you can pay a backup quarterback that much money
07:03no i mean he's he's in the second year he's the first round pick last year i i don't think
07:08the
07:09vikings are throwing them out they added kyler murray they're taking a chance at kyler murray but
07:14they probably think that they've got a pretty good situation in the quarterback room right now they
07:17have jj mccarthy backing up kyler murray two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven uh
07:24champ scotty scheffler chump creepy old guy talking to a teenager because i think he deserves
07:29another vote that's from come on i don't think that's fair the lion screwed up the window has
07:35closed already that's from a man named texter well i mean that begs further questions how is it the
07:44window is closed why do you think the window is closed i didn't get a reason that's what i'm saying
07:48uh unnamed texter the lion's window is open as long as golf is playing well my concern is when it's
07:53time
07:54to move on from golf how do we know how do we get the next franchise quarterback the lions sort
07:58of
07:58lucked into golf being the guy the trade where we received him kind of was a throw-in with the
08:03draft
08:04picks if it wouldn't have worked out what would we have done i don't know if he was a throw
08:08-in or if
08:08he was asked for there's no question that brad holmes would not say he was a throw-in he's not
08:13a
08:13throw-in he got homes believed in him took a team to the super bowl and brad holmes was on
08:18the staff
08:19the draft and now he's starting his uh this year where the lions will be the year that takes him
08:25more time in detroit than he ever spent in los angeles all right uh let's talk about our tiger
08:29team and what they have ahead next on 97 one
