00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who your
00:30faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting
00:35you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer,
00:59for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you and for having for the sake
01:05of vile pleasures turned myself from you. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem according to the commandments of
01:18the law, giving them an example of humility and holy love by kneeling down on the ground
01:24and washing their feet, wiping them with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example
01:31may penetrate my soul, destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me. Give me
01:39O Lord the deepest humility that I may without delay perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:46Give me perfect obedience that I may with complete diligence observe as your commandments whatever
01:52your appointed representatives may decide. Give me the most fervent charity that I may sincerely love
02:02all mankind. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who out of your unspeakable love gave us the
02:11sacrament of the Eucharist and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality so that you might remain
02:20with us even bodily unto the end of the world. Grant me I beg you O Lord an earnest longing
02:28and
02:29in kindle in my innermost soul an intense hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to
02:37the table of life I may receive you with chaste affection, complete humility and perfect purity of heart.
02:45May my soul so thirst for you now and so languish in your love that I may one day be
02:52found suitable to
02:53enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who when you were about to leave the world commanded and
03:07comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples and most earnestly commended them in prayer
03:15to your Father. Most plainly showing how tenderly you loved them and us who were to believe through
03:23their word. Grant that my heart may ever more relish your word and that I may find your words sweeter
03:32than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of that burning exhortation may so glide into my heart
03:41that I may be wholly transformed into your love. So direct all my ways O Lord my God
03:48that your holy will may be done in and by me for ever and ever.
03:54Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who went out with your disciples across the Kedron Brook
04:01and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken. May I entirely give up
04:10my
04:10will and always follow and love yours. May I for your honour and for the salvation of my brothers and
04:17sisters boldly endure any adversity and be willing even to lay down my life if your divine providence
04:25should so ordain it. Praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who as your passion drew nigh began
04:34to
04:34be fought sorrowful and sad with a heavy heart and so that by transferring the weakness of all your members
04:41to yourself you might be able to console and strengthen them when they were in their time of fear at
04:48the
04:48approach of death by this your own weakness which you have willingly taken upon you. Preserve me I beg you
04:58both from the immoderate sorrow and from foolish gladness. Grant that the grief which I have thus far
05:06endured may be for your glory and for the remission of my sins. Remove mercifully from me all distrust
05:14and unnecessary weakness and confirm and establish my soul whole in you. Praise and honour and glory be to
05:24you O Christ who fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to your Holy Father humbly offering your whole
05:30self to him saying your will be done. Give me grace in every necessity and trouble to fly to you
05:40in
05:40prayer and freely to resign and myself give myself up to your will. May I never unduly endeavour to escape
05:50from trouble but receive all things from your hand with a quiet mind and may I endure everything in meekness
05:59of spirit for your love. Amen. O Lord open our lips and our mouths shall sing your praise
06:17O be joyful in your love. Lord in hands. Serve the Lord with gladness and come in one is
06:30present and will the promise of love. Be sure that the Lord and he is God, be sure that the
06:41Lord and he is God,

13:46from his home. His father saw him and his heart went out to him. He ran and hugged his
13:52son and kissed him. Then his son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against
13:59you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his slaves, Hurry,
14:07bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
14:14Bring the fatted calf and kill it. Let us eat and celebrate, because this son of mine
14:20was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is failed. And so they began to celebrate.
14:28Then the elder son was in the field. As he came and approached the house, he heard music
14:34and dancing, so he called one of the slaves and asked what was happening. The slave replied,
14:40Your brother has returned and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he got
14:45his son back safe and so. But the elder son became angry and refused to go in. His father
14:54came out and appealed to him. But he answered his father, Look, these many years I have worked
15:01like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your commands. Yet you never even give me a
15:06goat as I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours comes back, who has
15:13devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him. Then the father
15:20said to him, Son, you are always with me, and everything that belongs to me is yours.
15:27It was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive. He was
15:32lost and is fed. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
15:42The story of the prodigal son is well known, and I'm quite sure we all feel some sympathy
15:48for the son who remained at home and worked day and night doing his duty. Jesus tells us
15:55that there was great rejoicing when the wayward son returned home. And in the same way there
16:00is rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents. The son who stayed home and true was never
16:08lost and so could never have been found. We all know what it is like to find something
16:14we truly thought lost. But it does not mean that we appreciate those things we have never
16:20lost any the less.
16:40The father, whatever his feelings might have been, complied with the son's wishes and gave
16:46him what would have been due to him. Then, when the money had been sold, the father had
16:57taken leave of them earlier and realised the folly of his ways. And so he resolved to return
17:05to his father, not as a son but as a humble servant, and beg his forgiveness. I suspect
17:14that some of us, at least, at some point in our lives have behaved or even continue to behave
17:20like the prodigal son. We have left the loving protection of our heavenly father and have gone
17:26about our own lives doing what we wanted, and thereby destroying the relationship we had previously
17:33had with our father. The message of this parable, then, is one of great comfort, for it reveals
17:40our way back to God and the extent of his mercy. If we turn back to him, in true humility,
17:48and
17:49ask for his forgiveness, then we know that this will be given to us. Not only, but there
17:57will be such a great welcome that the sound of the festivities will be heard from far away.
18:08There are two tests to which we have a right to submit any new religion. There are two questions
18:15which we have a right and which is our duty to put before everyone who claims to come to
18:19us as a teacher from God. And these questions are, what have you to tell us concerning the nature of
18:29God? And what have you to tell us concerning the nature of man?
18:39Now of these two tests, it is clear which is the simplest and easiest to apply, the second.
18:46We do know the nature of man. Of the divine nature, we are necessarily and naturally in some degree of
18:55ignorance. We know something of human life and of its circumstances. And therefore he who tells us that concerning man's
19:04nature, which we know to be untrue, has lost his claim upon our attention when he goes on to tell
19:10us something concerning God.
19:15Consider in the light of this test, as regards its theory of humanity, the religion of the Bible. There is
19:22a theory concerning man's nature and condition, on which the whole of this book, and all it professes to teach
19:29us, is based.
19:32I bring this religion to the test. I bring this religion to the test of one admitted and notorious fact
19:35in the nature and condition of man, in order to see how it explains the fact, and how it proposes
19:42to deal with it.
19:46The fact is the fact. The fact is the admitted and notorious fact of the exceptional unhappiness of man.
19:53Our Lord in this parable, confronts himself with this fact, as every teacher of the gospel or good news must
19:59do, if he is to win the attention of men.
20:04The hero, or anti-hero, if you would, of this story, the prodigal son, is, as you see, a sufferer.
20:12But he is more than that. He is an exceptional sufferer.
20:17All the other creatures described in the parable, the lower servants of the father, are bread and to spare.
20:25He alone is the one who suffers starvation.
20:29And more than that, he is a strangely exceptional sufferer.
20:33For he who suffers is infinitely superior to those who seem to be happy.
20:40All animals that we know of, save man, seem to be subject to this twofold law.
20:46Each animal has its instincts, its desires, its appetites.
20:49And in the climate or element in which it exists, there are corresponding objects of gratification for those appetites and
20:57desires.
20:59Man is pained by two different sources.
21:03One is the pain of satiety, and the other the pain of remorse.
21:09Give the man all the portion of goods that can fall to him,
21:12or that in his wildest dreams of covetousness or ambition, he can desire for himself.
21:19When he has enjoyed these to the full, and just because he has enjoyed them,
21:24there begins to be felt a famine in his enjoyment.
21:27And there does come the weariness of satiety into his heart and soul.
21:36The Bible theory of man is this, that he is not his true self,
21:41that he is a creature not in his proper and true element.
21:44It tells us that it has been the curse and the disorganisation of the nature of man,
21:49that in the exercise of the strange and mysterious spiritual power, free will,
21:55he has wandered away from his home, the father's home,
21:59and claimed the selfish and solitary possession of the goods which the father had given to him.
22:06It tells us that the origin of all human sin and sorrow has been this,
22:10that he said, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.
22:16The Bible tells us that misery is the result of this vain effort of man to do in this world
22:22of God,
22:24without the God who made him.
22:28And that all his misery, his weariness,
22:30is but the sublime discontent of the soul that was made to rest in its God,
22:35and cannot rest in anything less than God.
22:41Our religion is a historical religion.
22:44It bases itself upon one life in the past.
22:46It is ever-renewing and revealing itself in many lives,
22:50ever since that life was lived on earth.
22:53It bases itself on one life,
22:56and that life was a perfect life.
22:58The life of one who, all through his existence, as far as we know it,
23:03was a life unstained by impurity,
23:06a life unvexed and unharassed by sensual or evil impulses.
23:12It was a life that passed in its higher and complete obedience to the will of the Father.
23:17The life that he lived,
23:19the perfect life of obedience,
23:21for which all its sorrow only came from without,
23:25and only came from the fact that all around him were not like him,
23:30equally obedient.
23:32That life, he tells us,
23:35he can supernaturally give to us.
23:38I come that you might have life,
23:40and that you might have it more abundantly.
23:47May we all take a few moments today
23:49to set ourselves right with our Father.
23:53Let us approach him in total humility
23:55and confess our sins.
23:59Let us beg to be forgiven,
24:01not that we might be free to repeat our sins again in the future,
24:04but that we might be purified and admitted back
24:06into the heavenly family we walked out of,
24:09be it hours, days, weeks or years ago.
24:13There is a right royal welcome waiting for us.
24:17So what are we waiting for?
24:25Let us pray.
24:28Lord of all power and might,
24:30who is the author and giver of all good things,
24:34graft in our hearts the love of your name,
24:38increase in us true religion,
24:41nourish us with all goodness,
24:43and of your great mercy keep us in the same.
24:47Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
24:50Amen.
24:55May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
25:00bringing us to everlasting life.
25:03Amen.
25:06May the Lord bless us and keep us from all of us and keep us from all of us and
25:07keep us from all of us and keep us from all of us and keep us from all of us
25:07and keep us from all of us and keep us from all of us and keep us from all of
25:08us and keep us from all of us and keep us from all of us and keep us from all
25:09of us and keep us from all of us and keep us from all of us and keep us from
25:10all of us.
