11:56now when the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus
11:59they asked him to show them a sign from heaven
12:03he said when evening comes to you
12:06you say it will be fair weather because the sky is red
12:10and in the morning it will be stormy today
12:13because the sky is red and darkening
12:17you know how to judge correctly the appearance of the sky
12:21but you cannot evaluate the signs of the times
12:27a wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign
12:30but no sign will be given to it
12:33except the sign of Jonah
12:36then he left them and went on his way
12:42when the disciples went to the other side
12:44they forgot to take bread
12:48watch out Jesus said to them
12:50beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees
12:55so they began to discuss this amongst themselves saying
12:58it's because we brought no bread
13:02when Jesus learns of this he said
13:05you who have such little faith
13:07why do you argue amongst yourselves about having no bread
13:11do you still not understand
13:14don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand
13:18and how many baskets of leftovers there were
13:21or the seven loaves for the four thousand
13:24and how many baskets there were
13:26how could you not understand
13:28that I was not speaking to you about bread
13:32but beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
13:38then they understood that he had not told them to be on their guard against the yeast in bread
13:43but against the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees
13:49when Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi

16:05of all the northern journeys
16:06he approached Decapolis
16:09he was so near to home
16:11that he could not resist
16:12crossing the lake
16:13and revisiting the familiar seas
16:17how is he received
16:18do the people flock around him
16:21as they did before
16:23had it been so
16:24we would no doubt have been told
16:27there seemed to have been
16:29not one single word
16:30of welcome
16:32of all the multitudes
16:33he had healed and blessed
16:35there is not one
16:36crying out
16:37Hosanna
16:38to the son of David
16:42his friends
16:43if he ever had any
16:46had gone home
16:47and walked with him
16:48no more
16:49but his old enemies
16:51the Pharisees
16:52did not fail
16:53and they are not alone
16:55now
16:55nor as before
16:57in alliance only
16:58with those who
16:59naturally
16:59in sympathy
17:00with them
17:01but the fact really
17:03made a league
17:04with their great opponents
17:05the two rival parties
17:06of Pharisee
17:07and Sadducee
17:08finding it in their
17:10common hatred
17:10of the Christ of God
17:12a sinister bond
17:14of union
17:18this is the first time
17:20that we find
17:21the Sadducees
17:22mentioned in this gospel
17:24as coming into contact
17:25with Jesus
17:27some of them
17:28we know
17:29had gone to the baptism
17:30of John
17:31to his great astonishment
17:32but beyond this
17:34they have not yet
17:35put in
17:36an appearance
17:38they were the
17:39aristocracy
17:40of the land
17:40and held the most
17:41important offices
17:42of church
17:43and state
17:44in Jerusalem
17:46it is therefore
17:48the less to be wondered
17:49at that up until
17:50this point
17:50the carpenter
17:51of Nazareth
17:52should have been
17:53beneath their notice
17:55now however
17:56the great news
17:58of his doings
17:59in the north
17:59has finally compelled
18:01their attention
18:02the result
18:03is this combination
18:04with the Pharisees
18:06who have already been
18:07for some time
18:08engaged
18:08in the attempt
18:09to put him down
18:12there is an indication
18:14elsewhere
18:14in Mark 8 15
18:16that the Herodians
18:18had also
18:19united with them
18:21so that we may come
18:22to look upon this
18:23as the culmination
18:24of a crisis
18:25in Galilee
18:26when all the forces
18:28of the country
18:29have been roused
18:30in bitter
18:31and active hostility
18:32to Jesus
18:36the Pharisees
18:37and Sadducees
18:38as we know
18:39were at opposite
18:40poles of thought
18:41the one being
18:42traditionalists
18:43and the other
18:44sceptics
18:45of the time
18:46so that it was
18:47quite remarkable
18:48that they should be
18:49united
18:49in anything
18:52they did however
18:53unite in this demand
18:54for a sign
18:55from heaven
18:57neither of them
18:58could deny
18:59that signs
19:00had been given
19:01that the blind
19:02had received sight
19:03that lepers
19:04had been cleansed
19:05the lame healed
19:06and deeds of mercy
19:08done in every place
19:12but neither party
19:13was satisfied
19:14with this
19:15each was firmly
19:17wedded to a system
19:18of thought
19:18according to which
19:20signs on earth
19:21were of no
19:22evidential value
19:23a sign from heaven
19:25was what they needed
19:27to convince them
19:30the demand
19:31was practically
19:32the same
19:33that the scribes
19:35and Pharisees
19:36had made before
19:37in Matthew 12
19:38verse 38
19:39though it is put here
19:41more specifically
19:42as a sign
19:43from heaven
19:47the reason why
19:48the Pharisees
19:49adopted the same
19:50method of attack
19:51as before
19:52is not hard
19:53to seek
19:55their object
19:56was not
19:56to obtain
19:57satisfaction
19:58as to his claims
19:59but to find
20:00the easiest way
20:01to discredit him
20:02and knowing
20:04as they did
20:04from their past
20:05experience
20:06that the demand
20:07for a special sign
20:08would be refused
20:09they had already
20:11banked on the refusal
20:13to be used
20:14by their new allies
20:15as well as themselves
20:16as a weapon
20:18against him
20:20and they would
20:21not be disappointed
20:21for our Lord
20:23was no respecter
20:24of persons
20:25and he spoke
20:27just as plainly
20:28and sternly
20:29when the haughty
20:30Sadducees
20:31were present
20:31as he had done
20:33before they had
20:34made their appearance
20:38the words
20:39are stern
20:40and strong
20:41but here again
20:42it is perhaps
20:43more in sorrow
20:44than in anger
20:45that he speaks
20:47we learn from
20:48St Mark's account
20:49of the same event
20:50as he gave
20:51his answers
20:51he sighed
20:52deeply
20:53in his spirit
20:55there had been
20:56so many signs
20:59they were plain
21:00and clear signs
21:01which spoke
21:01for themselves
21:02signs which
21:03so plainly
21:05spelt out
21:06the words
21:06the kingdom
21:08of heaven
21:08is among you
21:09that it was
21:11unspeakably sad
21:12to think
21:12that they should
21:13be blind
21:13to them all
21:15and find it
21:16in their heart

21:18for something

21:19which in its
21:20nature
21:21would be no sign

21:24portent
21:24a barren

21:31how determined

21:32was not to

21:34craving

21:35miracle

21:38a showman

21:39about to perform
21:40a stunt
21:42he would
21:43work
21:43no miracle
21:44for the mere
21:44purpose
21:45of exciting
21:46astonishment
21:46or even
21:48for producing
21:48conviction
21:50when there was
21:51already quite
21:52enough
21:52for anyone
21:53who was willing
21:53to receive it
21:54in the regular
21:56natural
21:56and necessary
21:57development
21:58of his work
21:59as the healer
22:00of the sick
22:01the shepherd
22:02of the people
22:03the refuge
22:04of the troubled
22:05and distressed
22:07had there been
22:08no signs
22:09of the times
22:10there might have
22:10been some reason
22:11for a sign
22:12in the heavens
22:13but when there
22:14were signs
22:15in abundance
22:15of the kind
22:16to appeal
22:17to all
22:17that was best
22:18in the minds
22:19and hearts
22:20of men
22:20why should
22:22these be
22:23discredited
22:23by resorting
22:24to another
22:25kind of sign
22:27much inferior
22:28and far less
22:30adapted
22:30to the securing
22:31of the special
22:32object for which
22:33the king of heaven
22:33had come
22:34into the world
22:37the signs
22:38of the times
22:39were after all
22:40far more easily
22:40discerned
22:41than those signs
22:42in the heavens
22:43by which they
22:44were accustomed
22:45to anticipate
22:46fine or stormy
22:48weather
22:49there were signs
22:50of blessing
22:51enough to convince
22:52any doubter
22:53that the summer
22:54of heaven
22:54was easily
22:56within his reach
22:56and yet
22:58on the other hand
22:59in the state
23:00of the nation
23:00and in the rapidly
23:02developing circumstances
23:03which were hastening
23:05on the fulfilment

23:07of the prophecies

23:32he had given

23:33and the Pharisees

23:39look for a sign
23:40but there will
23:41be no sign
23:42given
23:42but the sign
23:43of the prophet
23:44Jonah

25:44their minds

25:46were occupied
25:47by the most part
25:48with the mistake

26:34a caution

27:30leave them
27:31and depart
27:31nor on the other
27:33hand
27:33did he explain
27:34in so many words
27:35what he meant
27:36it was better

27:38that they work

27:39for themselves
27:41the riddles
27:42of nature
27:43and of life
27:43are not
27:44provided
27:44with keys
27:47these
27:48must be
27:49discovered
27:49through
27:49thoughtful
27:50attention
27:51so instead
27:52of providing
27:53them with a
27:54key to his
27:55little parable
27:55he puts them
27:57in the way
27:57of finding it
27:58for themselves
27:58by asking
27:59them a series
28:00of questions
28:01which convinced
28:02them of their
28:03thoughtfulness
28:04thoughtlessness
28:05and faithlessness
28:06leading them
28:08to recognise
28:09his true
28:10meaning
28:15arriving

28:19which is
28:21regarded as
28:21marking a new
28:22era
28:23in the
28:23life of Christ
28:27his rejection
28:28by his own

28:35once again
28:36when he came
28:37to his temple
28:38and cleansed
28:39it in his
28:39father's name

28:42at the feast

28:46commit himself

30:40exceptionally

30:43place was
30:44in every
30:45way suited
30:45for a
30:46season of
30:46quiet
30:47communion
30:47with nature
30:48and with
30:49nature's
30:50god
30:51it was
30:52moreover
30:52just outside
30:53the land
30:54and in the
30:55place and
30:55surroundings
30:56there was
30:57much that
30:58must have
30:58been suggestive
30:59and inspiring
31:02it's not
31:03this great
31:03mountain
31:04on one
31:05of the
