18:36If then you haven't been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches?
18:44If you haven't been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you your own?
18:51No servant can serve two masters.
18:53For either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise
18:59the other.
19:00You cannot serve God and money.
19:05The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and ridiculed him.
19:10But Jesus said to them, You are the ones who justify yourselves in men's eyes, but God knows your hearts.
19:17For what is highly prized among men is utterly detestable in God's sight.
19:23There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen, and who feasted sumptuously every day.
19:30But at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, whose body was covered with sores, who longed to eat

19:44Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side.

20:14But Abraham said, Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus likewise bad things.
20:24But now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
20:30Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us, so that those who want to cross over from
20:35here to you cannot do so.
20:37And no one can cross over from there to us.
20:42So the rich man said, Then I beg you, Father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five
20:49brothers, to warn them, so that they don't come to this place of torment.
20:55But Abraham said, They have Moses and the prophets, they must respond to them.
21:02Then the rich man said, No, Father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.
21:09He replied to them, If they do not respond to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced, even
21:16if someone rises from the dead.
21:20This is the word of the Lord.
21:23Thanks be to God.
21:29On the surface, this appears to be a fairly simple parable, but there is a depth here which is useful
21:37for us to consider.
21:40It concerns a steward, who was interested with managing his master's business, and it is necessary for us to compare
21:47his position with that of our own.
21:50For we are also stewards of our master's business, the world in which we live.
21:57The word had reached the master that his steward was not acting in the way he should in the discharge
22:02of his responsibilities.
22:05We do not know if this was fraudulent, but the implication here is that he was lazy.
22:13In any event, he was losing his master's money steadily, and he had been fanned out.
22:19Mankind, the steward of God on earth, is both fraudulent and disobedient.
22:26We like to line our pockets at God's expense.
22:30Perhaps not intentionally, but we look for ways to enrich ourselves at the expense of others, and we squander things
22:37that we have been given.
22:40As a result of this discovery, the steward was given notice, his employment terminated, and he was called to give
22:47an account of himself.
22:50Likewise, our criminality, and there is no better way of putting it, has come to God's notice, and we have
22:57all had our contracts terminated.
23:00We are all on notice of dismissal by death, following the sin of Adam and Eve.
23:09We then know a little of the nature of this man, and again, he is much like us.
23:13He does not know what he can do.
23:17He claims he cannot dig, and he is too proud to beg.
23:22If his master had put him to dig, then most certainly he would have done.
23:26He was just too lazy to break a sweat at anything.
23:31If, through God's workings, we find ourselves in poverty, why should we be ashamed to beg?
23:38If we brought the situation upon ourselves, why are we so clever that we cannot beg?
23:46On the other hand, if God is teaching us humility, there is nothing to be ashamed of.
23:53The result was that, for the first time in a long time, the man went off and used his talents
23:58in order to make some money for his food.
24:02In the same way, when we are on notice of the termination of our wealthy contracts, we ought to be
24:08making the best of our remaining time here to better our spiritual situation.
24:14We need to remember that it is never too late, until the bell strikes the hour.
24:19Any little thing we can scrape through before that time will make our situation that much better.
24:27We are told that we are called upon to give a good account of the things that we have been
24:31given in this world.
24:33To earn the respect of others through our husbandry.
24:37Not by being mean and uncharitable, but through kindness and the use of common sense.
24:44It is one thing to give a hundred pounds to charity, and something completely different to throw away a thousand
24:50pounds on something of no benefit to anyone.
24:55If we can earn the trust of people in the little things in this life, then we will earn trust
25:00in the bigger things of the next.
25:04We are reminded that regardless of how much or little we may have in this world, we may only serve
25:10our Lord God.
25:11What we have is his, and is given to us to use wisely on his behalf.
25:16We must love him, and not the things he has chosen to give us.
25:20We must remember that the things we have in our possession are not ours, but belong to our Master, who
25:27has made us responsible for them.
25:29Let us then be true stewards of God.
25:36Then we come to the account of the rich man who died and went to hell, and the miserable beggar
25:41Lazarus who went to heaven.
25:44Enduring his torture in hell, the rich man sees Lazarus resting with Abraham in heaven, and begs that Lazarus be
25:52allowed to give him a tiny drop of water.
25:54Such is his supplier.
25:58You get the impression that Lazarus was known to the rich man.
26:02Perhaps he used to beg at his door.
26:05But it is clear that the rich man did nothing for the beggar, for he lived on whatever scraps he
26:10could find.
26:12There is no evidence at all that the rich man never showed a drop of compassion for Lazarus.
26:17But now with the tables turned, he wants Lazarus to come and wait upon him.
26:25Abraham rebuked the rich man, telling him that he had had his time of pleasure when he was on earth.
26:31He had wealth, and all the trappings that money could buy, never giving a thought for those who had nothing.
26:39Now that he had nothing, Lazarus on the other hand had lived a life of destitution, having nothing and living
26:48from one scrap to another.
26:51Now he had everything.
26:53So what was so unfair about this situation?
26:59Again, the rich man begs Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers to mend their way.
27:07Abraham pointed out that the scriptures were full of prophets doing just that, and they were ignored.
27:13Even if they saw a dead man come back to warn them, they would ignore him.
27:21This is a potent message for us today.
27:24We have it all.
27:26Do we not have food and homes?
27:30Many of us jet off around the world on holiday.
27:34However, there are so many of us here who have nothing at all.
27:39How often do we spare them even a thought, let alone anything else?
27:44Just as the rich man was caught up in his selfishness, so are we with our own little worlds.
27:50We have no time for God, and his inconvenient message of love for our neighbour.
27:55Our fellow man, the broken, bleeding man of the side of the road, left or dead.
28:03Why not set aside this year the money that we would spend on our holiday and give it to the
28:10poor?
28:12It will not cost us anything, for we have what we need, but the poor never have what they need.
28:23Let us remember to have compassion for the unfortunate as well as our friends, so that Christ may have compassion
28:30for us.
28:36Let us pray.
28:39Lord of all power and might, who is the author and giver of all good things, graft in our hearts
28:47the love of your name.
28:50Increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same.
