What do you believe is the main reason why the Detroit Tigers didn't trade free agent to be Gleyber Torres?
Transcript
00:00so why do you think glaber torres didn't get traded seemed like the honestly to me he seemed
00:07like the most likely tiger to get traded and it was because um proven performer gets on base
00:15expiring contract i didn't i wasn't sure anybody was going to meet the school blasking price i
00:21thought somebody probably would but there's sometimes a disconnect with a rental um
00:27uh mys is a player excuse me mys is a player i don't know it was a half sneeze half
00:34cough
00:35anyway mys was a player that i was kind of hoping they'd resign so i kind of was expecting more
00:40and they didn't trade glaber what do you think that was about i'm not sure because i was surprised
00:44once uh luis orias was traded i thought go to every one of those teams that was in on a
00:51rise
00:51and say okay you didn't land him but how about glaber torres we can pitch you on why glaber is
00:57every bit as good as a rise okay the batting average is not as high it's still a good batting
01:02average but
01:02the on base percentage is better and this guy is uh is very good defensively at second base as well
01:09if you're looking for for a guy a rental here here you go you can have him i don't know
01:14why he wasn't
01:14traded i i've been asking myself that i think the only thing that makes any kind of sense is
01:22is he is integral to this team's success offensively you know as as glaber torres goes when he plays this
01:29team plays winning baseball and maybe they just think if we're still going to try to have any shot
01:35at the playoffs we have to hang on to somebody and want to hang on to him rather than take
01:40the chance
01:40of promoting max anderson i i'm not sure i don't like that answer but i think that's the answer
01:47and then to a lesser extent none of the bullpen arms moved um finnegan probably killed his own market
01:53kenley jansen maybe the same thing but and then a bunch of guys are hurt well i was gonna say
02:00the
02:00other thing is if as bad as they've been recently yeah um what do you got left yeah they kind
02:08of
02:08undermine any their own chances of getting dealt finnegan's era is 3.5 but that's gonna be
02:13misleading because that's okay lately it's been terrible and and some of the inherited runners
02:19that you let score because you give a base hit they get charged to the previous pitcher although
02:24there was some weird stat about finnegan that his percentage of of straining base runners was like
02:3190 was when the upper echelon and all of baseball it's when he starts an inning is where he gets
02:37into
02:37trouble this year with the tigers um but if you had traded away finnegan and and and jansen you have
02:44no bullpen at all i think their bullpen's bad right now but imagine how bad to be without either one
02:48of
02:49those guys you start dipping back into the pool of toledo which is not good we we've seen those guys
02:56um there's a couple of toledo we haven't seen yet that i i suspect we will see they're older relief
03:01pitchers they're like 28 years old but you know they're they at least have done well at toledo
03:06can they get a chance here with the tigers i think we're going to see some of those guys soon
03:09well and then there's the other thing that all of this talk about what they're going to do from
03:13here on out and neither you nor i mentioned the name justin verlander
03:20he's still here yeah i mean he's in my notes is is okay what's going on with him
03:26are we ever going to see jv and like could really stand to see him asap now that he traded
03:33away two
03:33starting pitchers opens up opportunities in the rotation but is it it seems like it's a race of
03:41tortoises who's going to get there first between justin verlander uh jack flarity and and and jackson
03:49job who's going to and and throw river ryan in the mix too those four guys who's who's going to
03:55be
03:55starting first i don't know man but and it seems like maybe out of those four guys verlander could be
04:01the last one just for the theater's sake of it could you imagine if the tigers actually stick
04:06around and verlander starting an important game and when they're trying to make the playoff would
04:10be amazing just for the theater as unlikely as it seems because i've said it a million times i've
04:15gotten to the point where i'm not really expecting anything right but he is still here those are facts
04:23he is in fact still here but are we sure yeah well yeah he's there he was out there remember
04:28they had the scene of him running out to the to the clubhouse uh when when they weren't sure what
04:34was going on with the scoogle thing and on saturday night and i don't i don't expect i guess i'm
04:41kind
04:41of the same place you are i don't expect to see him pitch ever again and yet i desperately want
04:45to
04:45see it but i just don't expect to now because it's been setback after setback and you know he's
04:52if he was 32 coming back from a hamstring issue or whatever it is he's dealing with would seem like
04:57okay he's going to be able to but he's not he's what 43 years old so that hammy ain't apparently
05:02ain't getting better father time man undefeated never lost never lost it's he looked good last
05:09year we all agree great last year the second half of the season yeah break it down that's why they
05:13that's one of the reasons why they signed him not the nostalgia stuff they actually thought that he
05:17could help this staff and he pitched one game and none at comerica park and we don't even get
05:23updates anymore i think when was he put on the 60 day is that why they don't even like it
05:28was the
05:29hip i think at first and then that you're right then it was the hamstring after like it just one
05:33thing after another and that's father time that's just i stretched wrong this morning you know and
05:39he's never gonna i don't think he's gonna pitch july 8th he was placed on the 60 day so
05:47you know he could be ready to go in september well but that's but it's also retro so yeah what
05:54was it retro to i didn't well it's gonna be when it was first place which would have been the
05:58first
05:58week of the season so you're looking at the first week of april so that 60 day is probably
06:04then you got to do something with him then right you can't just leave him there he's not ready to
06:08go
06:08uh kevin and mccomb you're on 97 one hello kevin hey thanks for taking my call sure yeah i think
06:15we have a better chance of hearing more from ben verlander than justin verlander we're not counting
06:20on much uh so in particular the the casey myes trade i um you know you look i consider i
06:29know a
06:29little bit about baseball i feel um and i just you look at their well all i gotta do is
06:34look at their
06:34farm system top to bottom crew schoolcraft is their number one pitching prospect and
06:39i know i could just be a fan boy with casey myes but i mean i don't know how they
06:45didn't get
06:46crew schoolcraft the number one pitcher for casey myes who are you talking about the padres
06:54yeah the padres my fault i thought i thought this guy was their number two overall prospect and their
06:59number one's a catcher ethan silas he was a number one was number one and then crew schoolcraft was
07:05number two he's number two now he wasn't he wasn't he wasn't yesterday really okay yeah i thought
07:13crew schoolcraft was the better pitcher out of the two in my opinion well 18 games started this year
07:19at a ball and he's got a 5.56 era and it's again a ball yeah low a ball yeah
07:25dang yeah nowhere yeah
07:27dang okay well no mayfield was the uh number two prospect for the padres going into the trade
07:33yesterday okay yeah i should have done my homework a little bit all right don't worry about it thanks
07:38guys yeah but it also tells you how depleted their system is when you know their their number two
07:47prospect now is a is a 19 year old that it low a ball with a with a high era
07:52through 18 starts i feel
07:54like there's a non-zero chance that that guy just called up to say the name cruise schoolcraft on
07:58the air a whole bunch might be yeah what was the name we had yesterday uh ubegar zebu yanovich
08:04no no it was uh la groove groover it was like two grew la hen la henry la henry groover
08:12something
08:13groover yeah yeah we were we were digging on that name and i don't who was he with do you
08:18remember
08:18what you everybody loves lou james groover lou james groover thank you thank you very much jake
08:24lou james groover who's a prospect with somebody and we found his name arizona triple a affiliate
08:31thank you you're on top of it yep lou james groover is with the reno aces god darn it i'd
08:38like to have
08:38imagine pairing him with cruise schoolcraft there you go two four eight five three nine ninety seven
08:4597 all right more feedback garrett from east lansing writes in love the show terek scoobal
08:49on saturday definitely helped the mice return team scrambling to add at the end are more likely to
08:54give better returns i'm happy with the mice return a lot did not i'm happy with the mice return did
09:00not
09:00expect to get an organization's best pitching prospect yeah to be fair the padres organization
09:06has been depleted um they gave up a ton to get mason miller last year and has not
09:14uh that what they ended up getting you know getting their number two prospect is
09:19not as exciting as getting some teams number two prospect but still it's a pretty good return for
09:23casey mice i was happy with that yeah i i'm i'm fine with it i i'll feel great about it
09:28if they
09:29re-sign casey mice oh yeah dan writes in i would not sign jameer to an extension 20 million for
09:35a
09:35running back is too expensive okay ask yourself that and and then compare it to a wide receiver
09:44yeah it's just the market i know it doesn't make sense to you but if you think about the market
09:48is the market but i'm just talking about production versus production
09:53is 20 million too much for a running back who's giving you 2 000 yards
09:59from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns is that too much well it's it's what the market is what it is i
10:06know
10:06the market is what it is but 20 million isn't too much for a running back because the market is
10:10now
10:1022 and a half million all of it's too much if you're going to do this i'll say all of
10:15it's too
10:16much fair enough but uh next text can we give brad holmes a victory lap on this one he paid
10:22aminrah is getting an average of 30 million per year that's a huge w that's from jody and taylor
10:27well when you look at the top 10 receivers and football in terms of money where does he fit now
10:32is he still in the top 10 i would go look but compared to zay flowers who would you rather
10:38have
10:38i think i'm i think zay flowers is great but amin rise let's go uh rankings by position
10:49sorry i'm working my way through the drop down menus i think per year zay flowers is like down
10:54fourth and he's ahead of uh he tied with justin jefferson ahead of cd lamb he's tied with justin
10:59jefferson ahead of cd lamb ahead of uh amon ross st brown he's only behind jsn jamar chase and drake
11:06london
11:07wow um yeah as far as contract average aminrah is 12th
11:19wow 248-539-9797 let's go to rob on a cell you're on 971 hello rob hi boys what's up
11:29um i was i was just
11:30going to say that you know since scott harris has just seemed overmatched at the trade deadline since
11:36he got the job i think they do a really good job in development within the system but you know
11:40each
11:41trade deadline whether it was the erod debacle even to this one you know i think the reason he gets
11:46so
11:47much pushback is because trading the best asset two days before the end just makes everybody take a
11:53look not to mention you know some of this stuff like i'm not sure they wanted to keep glabor torres
11:59this year when they when they offered him i think they were thinking he was going to get a bigger
12:03deal
12:03and they were going to get compensation that kind of got stuck with him um so so there's so many
12:09moving parts here that i just feel like he's kind of a step behind always well do you think there
12:14was
12:14a miss what's the misstep with trading scoble you don't like the return i didn't think i no no no
12:20it
12:20wasn't a misstep i i just think that you know like like always we're getting told about how we don't
12:26understand or nobody understands really how the business works yet everybody else who reports on this
12:31within the game including other gms talks about they were uh less than impressed with the way
12:36that's not true that's not true there are some people that have said that but they're also not
12:41everybody else they got a good return not not okay so but i and i'm not totally against the return
12:46i'm
12:47not even saying that i'm just saying that with the dodgers with the dodgers going to in a day from
12:52that moment pull that that trade back is that so you wanted you wanted them to wait to the last
12:57day
12:57you want them to wait till yesterday to trade tarot school did you hear his explanation for that no no
13:01no i wanted them i just wanted them to um make sure that they exhausted all their possibilities
13:07let me be let me be clear all right thank you rob let me be clear on something we won't
13:11know if this
13:11was a great trade for years we won't and i i won't i'm not planting a flag that it is
13:17a great trade no
13:18but if you believe what scott airs had to say yesterday there were multiple teams that made
13:23that made offers and then approved their offers improved yeah came back and offered more
13:29and then eventually he said all right final offer and they got them on he may have hit it on
13:35the
13:35head about why they didn't trade claver torres if if there wasn't an offer there that they liked that
13:39they thought okay if if we lose claver torres and free agency then they get a better comp pick
13:44carson bay uh carson henderson 97 one
