How aggressive to you imagine the Tigers being at the MLB trade deadline?
Transcript
00:00all right so the voting right now make the playoffs 29.2 percent miss the playoffs 70.8
00:08percent all right so it's off by 13 percent yeah i mean you know like i said it wasn't that
00:14bad
00:14um but go vote and comment uh kane's disappointed in you yeah i mean unlike doug i do have
00:21expectations for you man you know and then they're high at least they had the right direction i see
00:26yeah i mean all right this is like explaining to your parents like a e is not that bad
00:32that's the percent you're you missed off my whole letter grade here yeah oh you went with e well 50
00:39whatever the 70 i'm sorry no i'm sorry king i'm so sorry this is the producer of the show you
00:48know
00:49what he's saying to you be better scott i i i promise i endeavor to be better i
00:56i don't ever want to let you down again king i'm sorry uh let's get to the people jerry in
01:00battle creek hi jerry hey guys how you doing this morning what's up so i keep going back and forth
01:07on this school bowl thing i'm sure a lot of tigers fans do sure you know my first instinct was
01:11trade
01:11him get something back and then it's the closer we get keep them i'm just curious somebody threw
01:15something at me does it make a difference knowing that potentially we won't even have baseball next
01:21year that if we keep him if we're close we keep him that it kind of takes the sting out
01:25of getting
01:26nothing back for him because we're going a whole year without seeing anybody anyway does that does
01:31that skew you guys at all do you think about that at all i'll get off on this and say
01:34jerry does it
01:35well let me ask it does skew your thinking at all it it does actually because i we are such
01:41in a live
01:42in a moment society now be it bad or good whatever um by the time it starts up again if
01:48we're getting
01:48prospects and all that we wouldn't see him for a while anyway and it's like oh yeah i remember a
01:53couple years ago he would he was pitching for a yeah to me it's like it takes a whole year
01:58out of
01:58out of that and we'll have the lions and we'll have the red wings to go through that by the
02:02time it comes
02:02back around i don't know that i'll care that much that he's not here and you know thank you for
02:08the phone
02:08call i don't know what to do with this this being a pending work stoppage like somebody called last
02:19week and said you know how much more maybe it was earlier this week you know much more valuable all
02:23the prospects you'd get back are going to be in the new cba to which i said no i don't
02:29i don't know
02:29how much more valuable they will be because we don't know what the new cba is going to be
02:34but is it possible that you will be it it makes sense to hoard prospects before you go into a
02:41large a long work stoppage or if there is no baseball next year do you just absolutely hammer
02:50the gas pedal here and go for it does that because you know we're gonna hopefully win the last world
02:58series before 2028 well how do you hammer the gas pedal what does that look like that looks like
03:03buying okay so if you're hammering the gas pedal go get mason miller you keep scuble and you get
03:09other pieces you can't just probably do yeah so you're giving up your what two three of your top
03:16five prospects probably yeah and that's hammering it yeah i mean so and and i don't have a problem
03:23and look going for mason miller you know that's been something i've been talking about for a while
03:27you've been you were like before anybody was writing about it you've had a couple uh interesting
03:31calls your first one was sell scuble and go for it you know you're the first one that i heard
03:35said
03:35the cutting edge stuff here from scott anderson and then felt like people started getting on board
03:39same thing with mason miller i'm like come on and now we're back a little bit after the bad prediction
03:45on the no okay but you did some good work um you know i mean seriously those are things that
03:53kind of gaining some momentum out there in the uh in the tiger sphere because to me it in addition
03:59like if you were to go ahead and let's say you give up max clark to get mason miller hammering
04:04the
04:05gas pedal to me would also mean that you're you're going after rental players to improve the roster
04:12dramatically and i don't know if i i i'll tell you this i don't want the tigers to do that
04:18i still want
04:19them to be smart about what their their plans are as an organization and when it comes to to answer
04:26the previous caller's question about do i think about the collective bargaining agreement and what
04:31it's going to look like next year no i don't i i because nothing we can control i think that
04:36the
04:36parties are already starting to negotiate that's fine that that's a good start i think it's going to
04:41be a tough negotiation i think both sides are going to stay at polar opposites when it comes to a
04:45salary
04:45cap but in the end they'll get something done is my thought i don't know when it gets done but
04:51i'm
04:52not just going to worry about this season and not know what happens i don't i don't care uh at
04:58this
04:58point until i have to care and that's more i guess kind of a life philosophy that i have like
05:04i'll
05:04prepare for stuff right and things happen in life but i'm not going to sit and worry about something
05:09that hasn't happened yet i might be able to prepare for it but i'm not going to do something
05:15crazy now because this might happen i'll deal with what happens when it happens which may not
05:21be the greatest philosophy yeah i was about to say that's how i worry about everything and prepare and
05:26do stuff i said yeah i'm a mess but that's the thing is that i don't want to get up
05:31upstairs here and
05:32then i i've lost focus on everything else i get to the caller i don't know what to do with
05:37it i don't
05:38know because i assume that the tigers organization and the players themselves have a better sense of
05:48what a new cba is going to look like than we do so i i would hope that they both
05:55sides would act
05:56accordingly the the fact that players aren't rushing to sign long-term contracts tells me they're pretty
06:03confident there will be no salary cap well where is that where do you get that from i mean just
06:07because
06:08a scoble or what well who has well i mean what free agent to be is signed with their team
06:13right
06:13now because i mean if the season ends and there's no baseball next year they're going a year plus
06:19without a check but i think that most players in most years if they're for pending free agents they
06:25want to get to free agency of course so why are they stupid they don't typically sign okay because if
06:30there's no baseball next year and there's a salary cap the pool of money might be smaller they're not
06:36running to get their piece of the pie before the pie shrinks so that tells me that they know that
06:41there's not gonna be a salary cap that's exactly what i just said right but but no no but you're
06:45saying because they don't know if there's gonna be a salary cap or not i'm saying they do know there
06:49won't be one i literally just said that there's that tells me that there's not going to be a salary
06:54cap because players aren't running to sign contracts which is something that i thought might happen
06:59i guess i'm not putting those two together you literally i literally made the point and you just
07:04made it again like that's the exact same point i don't i think there's two things that are different
07:09there you're saying that they're not going to sign the long-term deals because they don't think
07:12there's going to be a salary cap now like i thought players seeing a pending work stoppage and having
07:18a concern about a salary cap might run to sign long-term contracts the fact that they're not doing that
07:23tells me they're convinced there will be no salary cap okay it's the same point right sort of all
07:30right uh anyway last night's game there are two players in how you lee and cater montero who
07:40are are fascinating when you look back at them do you know how long cater montero's been in the tigers
07:45organization i don't i think it's been for a long time though 11 years he's
07:53like it was like a 17 year old or 16 he signed just after his 26th birthday or 16th birthday
08:00and he he's been if you look at the levels he has played at he has bounced all over the
08:08tigers
08:08organization he's made it as high as triple a and dropped back to a like i don't know that he
08:13was
08:14trending to be in their plans and kind of just a guy in the organization
08:21and last night he was dominant in a massive game he was dominant i don't have a swing and
08:29miss numbers in front of me but i i suspect they were great i i'd love to sort of hear
08:38it from cater's
08:39perspective his path to where he is right now because if if if they if the tigers make the playoffs
08:46and i he's looking like a guy that would be one of their starting pitchers which is an amazing reality
08:54so a couple years ago he was a top 10 prospect in the organization which you know if you go
09:03back
09:03and look like i was i'm surprised to see that he was a top 10 because i don't remember reading
09:07much
09:08about him at all a couple years ago and yet here he is ahead of other names that we that
09:12we're very
09:12familiar with it's interesting this is the the top 30 prospects for the tigers in 2024 number one
09:18was max clark two was colt keith three was jackson job followed by jace young ty madden parker meadows
09:24kevin mcgonigle justin henry molloy and cater montero beyond that you had melton dylan dingler how you lee
09:34brisenio max anderson lots of guys that we're we still know about um and guys that have matriculated to
09:39the to the majors and done that job it's his story is incredible it's funny because usually when guys
09:48are in the organization and working their way up the minor league ladder usually fans will ask about
09:55him we'll get calls about him i don't think we got one cater montero call until cater montero was here
10:02he was creating very little buzz and you know i'm sure there's some hardcore tiger fans that follow
10:09the minors that are out there that are just like oh i knew about him but you may have known
10:13about him
10:14but there was nothing really you'd have to go back a ways back to 2019 where he had seasons were
10:20worth
10:20talking about where he had a low do you have his do you have it like is in front of
10:24you his path
10:27is crazy i mean the dominican league for a couple of years uh then was in the florida instructional league
10:33um he played at west michigan he made it up to west michigan back in 2021 um in 2023 he
10:43ended up
10:43playing at west michigan erie and toledo all three levels 2024 was toledo and got to the tigers in 2024
10:50as well he's been all over the place and his numbers i mean here are the era numbers 2021 5
10:57.28
10:592022 4.51 2023 who's 4.66 i mean it's nothing to tell you oh this guy yeah can't wait
11:08to see this
11:08guy coming down the pipe he was filthy last and he's been really good all season long but what's
11:14his era now in the season it was just above three uh i don't have the numbers in front of
11:18me so but
11:19yeah it's pretty he's been really good two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven point
11:23one it's pi three point one four yeah can you keep going how many i think it's three point one
11:29four
11:29one five nine and then i stop all right as most people do it's carson anderson 97.1
