01:37You know, this was going to be a return of 2019
01:40or whatever the heck from Deshaun Watson.
01:43And then basically it was the tidbit that went viral yesterday really in all of the NFL
01:50other than the injuries that happened in Cincinnati or elsewhere.
01:53Thank God, you know, fingers crossed, look like we made it through a day
01:56because we have had first days, LaCharles Bentley.
01:59We've had first days over my era of watching Browns football that have been disastrous.
02:05So you avoided that, but basically the back-to-back interceptions.
02:10And I know I've already seen it with context.
02:13There's been context on the interceptions.
02:16I know I was watching Channel 3 yesterday.
02:20Camino and Rankle were like, well, the drill kind of stopped and guys were going somewhere.
02:25And then the other one, well, Denzel Ward made a terrific Denzel Ward play.

03:30We're supposed to have fun with what's going on because we don't know necessarily on a play-to-play basis
03:35like what the coaches are looking for, what they're asking of their QBs.
03:39But at the very least, like, forget everything else.
03:44Like, Deshaun Watson.
03:45I just wanted to see him, you know, once over six years look like a viable quarterback.
03:51And then we went right back to the...
03:53Yesterday was not the day for that, man.
03:55And it's like...
03:56When has been the day for that?
03:57And we want to have fun with it.
03:59Yet at the same time, like, we have to cover this quarterback competition objectively.
04:04We can't sit here and sell people on false hope.
04:07And what we have to report this morning after their first day of training camp is the guy that hasn't
04:13been a good quarterback in the six years that he's been in Cleveland in his very first practice after a
04:20summer of talking about finally being healthy.
04:23Literally through back-to-back interceptions.
04:25Like, that is true, honest coverage of this quarterback competition.
04:30That's not us having fun.
04:32That's not making fun of Deshaun.
04:33That's the cold, hard facts of what took place yesterday in Berea.
04:37Well, so every year I ask the question of Browns fans.
04:40And I want to hear from anybody who, you know, might have been able to check it out, might have
04:46been able to see online, 216-474-0092.
04:49Like, do you want me to be the overly positive guy?
04:55Do you want me to start the year fresh and not carry over, you know, all the bad thoughts of
05:05yesteryear?
05:06Because, I mean, I can do that.
05:07I just feel like I wouldn't be honest.

05:09And we, I mean, we heard from Zach yesterday saying that when you watch Deshaun Watson play quarterback, this is
05:17from Zach Jackson of The Athletic.
05:19He's like, it's hard to forget the last six.
05:21It's hard to turn over a new page and give Deshaun Watson this clean slate because it looks exactly how
05:27it's looked.
05:28So it's hard to forget everything bad that he's done when it looks exactly the same.
05:33Well, so I guess I want to know from people, do you want us to honestly talk about the quarterbacks
05:38just in comparison to each other?
05:41Or do you want us to talk about them in the context of the rest of the league?
05:45Because obviously the prevailing wisdom is you have one of the worst, if not the worst quarterback room in the
05:51league.
05:51If you want us to just compare them to each other, then yeah, all right.
05:56There were some positives yesterday from Shador Sanders.
05:59The throw to KC, I mean, there's no pass rush.
06:03It looked like it was a practice throw.
06:06Look great.

06:07It was not a real play.
06:09Like, I can't really take a lot away from that and go, hey, when we get in the thick of
06:13things in week one against Jacksonville and it's third down at eight and they are pinning their ears back.
06:19Like, does that look like football to you yesterday?
06:22No, it doesn't.
06:23It's just working on some things.
06:24That's fine.
06:25Yeah, it's good that he at least did something Deshaun Watson couldn't do.
06:29Yeah, it was literally day one.
06:30You know, the rookies weren't even working with the ones.
06:33Like, they had DeJuan Jones at left tackle for a lot of the day.
06:36The receivers were working with the twos, both Concepcion and Boston.
06:41That's why Shador got a lot of work with the rookie receivers because he was working with the twos yesterday.
06:46Today will be Shador's day with the ones.
06:49So, if you're a big fan of that, tune in to Afternoon Drive.
06:52I'm sure they will have snap-by-snap coverage of what happens with Shador's big day out there on the
06:59practice field.
07:00But yesterday was Deshaun's day with the ones, and it wasn't great.
07:04It was bad.
07:04Like, Dylan Gabriel got some time with the ones.
07:06You know, so they are cycling these guys through.
07:09But it is just really hard to talk myself into either of these guys when it's looked like what it's
07:15been, which is wildly inconsistent and not good enough.
07:19So, are you guys just going to spend this whole day and maybe this whole preseason being down on the
07:24Browns, being down on the quarterbacks?
07:26Well, I mean, I'm down on the quarterbacks.
07:28Because yesterday, I listened to the station and I heard positivity oozing from the station.
07:35Nick Wilson says embrace the quarterback battle.
07:38I think we got to do it.
07:39I want every Browns fan listening.
07:42I want you to give yourself permission to live and die with this.
07:45Because I think in the age of social media, a lot of people have gotten snarky about charting passes or
07:51watching videos on social media.
07:53I think we need to make this year about feeling good, about getting back to rooting for the Browns.
07:58And that might be complicated depending on who wins the quarterback job for you.
08:02Embrace the quarterback battle and have fun with Deshaun's interception machine.
08:07If Shador has a big touchdown, let's have some fun with this.
08:10Because honestly, if we don't have some fun with this, this could end up being a really frustrating year.
08:14And you do it to remind yourself, this little stretch for the next six weeks is probably going to be
08:17more fun than, let's say, week 13.
08:19If we're having discussions about, well, should they lose for draft positioning or should they try to win?
08:24And if they try to win, can they even accomplish that?
08:27We've done now eight wins in the previous two seasons.
08:29We all know what week 13, 14 can look like on a really bad football team.
08:33Sometimes this little stretch here can be the best thing we have.
08:36See, when I hear that, I really do sometimes have to wonder, like, what kind of city we are as
08:43a sports fan.
08:44I really have to wonder, because, yeah, we can contrive fun things out of any season.
08:49Carson Swessinger last year, he was fun.
08:52Yeah, Miles Garrett, single season sack record.
08:54Fun!
08:55The 2019 Browns, when Munkin was here, we're getting ready to talk a little Jadavian Clowney.
08:59That team was bad.
09:01Like, that was the Freddy Kitchens year.
09:02That team produced bad results.
09:04But I'll maintain there were fun moments that happened in that season.
09:08You had the OBJ clown shoes.
09:10You had the OBJ watch.
09:11You had Baker Mayfield not shaking hands with Richard Sherman.
09:15Then later video confirms he did shake hands with Richard Sherman.
09:18There were different things that came out of that season that made it fun.
09:22I don't think you can force fun on people, especially when, and he said it,
09:30the quarterback very well could be Deshaun Watson.
09:33And nothing about this Deshaun Watson experience has been fun, funny, entertaining.
09:40It's been hilariously bad, but I wouldn't say that anything about Deshaun Watson has been fun.
09:46It's been embarrassing.
09:47Embrace the quarterback battle and have fun.

09:54Almost universally, everybody I talked to that was watching every single snap of yesterday,
10:00they did not say the quarterback play was fun.
10:02Again, do you want us to compare the quarterbacks just to each other?

10:07Shador Sanders won the day, right?
10:09Seemed to me, from talking to everybody I talked to, it's that Deshaun was terrible.
10:16Well, then Deshaun lost the day.
10:18Shador didn't win the day.
10:20It was about who lost the day, and Watson has lost a lot of days since he has been brought
10:26in,
10:27and it's been the worst acquisition and one of the worst trades in NFL history.
10:31But I really do, when I bring up that, I question what kind of sports city we are living in.
10:37I got a scathing takedown from Zach Meisel about the Guardians,
10:42the team that has made the playoffs seven of the last ten years and is probably going to be eight
10:45of eleven.
10:46They won yesterday, by the way, good job team, good job squad, good job squadron, but seven to ten,
10:53they've made the playoffs, and now I guess the question going forward is going to be,
10:57do you even care if the Guardians make the playoffs every year, based on what I saw from Zach Meisel.
11:02The Cavs, the Cavs were one of the last four teams remaining in the season.
11:06That same guy who was looking for the fun, Nick Wilson, trashed your basketball team from start to finish.
11:13Like, made it seem like they were the 17-win Cavaliers the year before they got LeBron James.
11:19Trashed them.
11:20We know it's a Brownstown, though, Lima.

11:24If they are a Brownstown, what world am I living in that you wouldn't trash the team
11:31that if we're all football savants in this town, we've all been raised by Jim Brown and Otto Graham.

11:46every game
11:47where I used to watch them pass around this vat of, like, juice.
11:51They'd say, drink the juice, drink the juice.
11:54And then by the end, I'd see some guy just lather it all over his body because we're football.
11:59That's what we get here.
12:01And we like watching Grant Delpit because we're sophisticated football fans.
12:05That's what the guy in your chair says every single day.
12:08And then they're terrible and they win three or four or five games every year.
12:13Is that what you want?
12:14Do you want positivity?
12:15This is the part of the program, though, in the offseason where it's got to start.
12:19It's got to start for these crazy people in the Muni lot and the 537 boys.
12:23It really all starts here.
12:24The delusion starts here that you sell yourself on the dream, on the fairy tale,
12:30and you genuinely start to believe it that this team can be good.
12:33And I've done it myself.
12:35I've fallen for the fairy tale many times over.

12:42This year, I'm having an increasingly difficult time falling for it the way that I have in previous years
12:48because I've seen this exact movie play out with Deshaun Watson.
12:52I just can't believe what I'm hearing this morning because I just heard the exact opposite yesterday afternoon.
12:58And now you guys are doing this.
13:00There's like a Mason-Dixon line in the middle of Baskin-Phelps right now between the morning show and the
13:06afternoon show.
13:07I'm getting positivity from the afternoon show.
13:10I'm getting nothing but negative from you.
13:12It's the all-time double standard.
13:14I think it's one of the themes of sports in this city, and it's sports talk in this city.

13:18A double standard that the Guardians can do no right, the Cavs can do no right, the Browns.
13:24Let's embrace the fun on a team that is going to be one of the worst teams in football this
13:29year.

13:32There are no expectations for this team.
13:35And we have been so much of the misery and cynicism of the last couple years, it's been the failure
13:40to meet expectations.
13:42It is saying, hey, we're going to go win a Super Bowl, and the Browns were a three-win team.
13:47I think because you're in a spot here where no one expects anything of you, I think as a Browns
13:52fan, I think it's time to kick our feet up, embrace whatever happens.
13:56Whatever outcome comes of this is good.
13:58If they end up winning three games and get the number two pick, you're going to get your quarterback.
14:01Yeah, no, but in the process, if they only win three games and I get my quarterback, I'm excited about
14:06that, then week 12 is a tough go.

14:08But again, like if that's...
14:09That's where the happiness, like my next seven months, the happiness, a lot of it can be derived of what
14:13happens in the next six weeks.
14:14But if that's where you expected to go, how can you be unhappy with it?
14:17I mean, that has been almost...
14:20That's been 90% of the years that we've been on the air is that December football has been meaningless
14:25in this town, and we're just waiting to see who they fire, right?

14:48The feel-good Browns, Vegas has them at five and a half.

14:58camp yesterday, including some news at the very start.
15:04Grant Delpit, a contract extension yesterday.
15:08In fact, it was a cool moment.

15:13You retain a player...
15:16Some people were calling it a hold-in.
15:18Oh, it was.
15:19He was there, but it's the first day.
15:21Yeah, but he was not doing anything, and he didn't do anything.
15:25He was there for spring practices and minicamp, but he didn't do anything.
15:29So he was definitely sending some sort of message about the contract.
15:33So it was Denzel.
15:34Denzel was there throughout veteran minicamp.
15:36He didn't do anything either, and he acknowledged yesterday that, yeah, that was contract-related.
15:41Well, three-year extension, we're $16 million annually, $35 million guaranteed.
15:46And so I wondered.
15:48I searched far and wide to see what people thought about this,
15:51because yesterday when it came to Denzel Ward and that news,
15:57some people, like we had Zach Jackson, he said it was the same old Browns.
16:00Other people were like, we've got to have some veterans.
16:02Nick, I think that was your take.
16:03You've got to have some veterans, somebody who can lead by not just, you know,
16:11the way that they lead in the locker room and the things they say,
16:13but also, you know, how they approach work every single day.
16:17It's nice to have guys like that.
16:20But then we know they didn't keep Myles Garrett.
16:24So when people say, well, this is going to be important for like maybe next year
16:28when the Browns are good, you want to have some really good players.
16:32It's like, yeah, but you won't have Myles Garrett, who was the best player.
16:35So if you're expecting to be good the following year, whatever,
16:38I don't want to muddle the conversation.
16:40And then when the Grant Delpit thing goes down, I searched far and wide on the internet
16:44and I saw this headline and I want to run this by you guys.
16:48And then I'll tell you where it came from.
16:50The head, you're not allowed to look.
16:52Don't look over here at the screen, Nick Padone.
16:53Because I found a headline and it was Grant Delpit's contract extension proves
16:59Browns aren't tanking or rebuilding.
17:02And I'm like, well, that's just silly on his face.

17:11Padone, I want you to quote, as the afternoon show would say,
17:15show your work on the headline, Grant Delpit's contract extension proves Browns aren't tanking
17:20or rebuilding.
17:21Does it prove that?
17:23I think it does.
17:24I think they've sold themselves on the fact that they're not tanking or rebuilding.
17:29I don't know if they are tanking or rebuilding, but I genuinely think that Andrew Barry, Todd
17:36Munkin, everybody involved is kind of exiting the rebuild.
17:42I think they believe that trading back in back-to-back first rounds and trading Myles
17:47Garrett for Jared Verse, who they really like in the three draft picks, I think they feel
17:51like that's enough.
17:52We want to compete.
17:54We want to win games.
17:54They've been pretty consistent with that messaging too.
17:57That was Barry's first answer in Indianapolis at the Combine to kind of start this new football
18:02season is just because you're going to have a young team doesn't equate to being a bad
18:07team.
18:07And of course he cited, you know, the bears, he cited the Eagles, which is one of his favorite
18:12organizations to mention.
18:14I think they genuinely believe that they're exiting their little mini rebuild that they
18:19had to go through.
18:20And the quarterback is the one thing that they've got to address, but they have two first round
18:25picks this year.
18:26They've got two second round picks the year after that.
18:28So I think they've sold themselves on we're exiting this rebuild.
18:32Is that the right or wrong assessment of where they're at?
18:35I don't know.
18:36We've seen for years, the Browns misjudge where they're at as an organization.
18:40It happened in 2022 when they thought they were a quarterback away and they traded for
18:44Deshaun.
18:44They needed receivers at that time.
18:46They needed a left tackle at that time, but they thought the quarterback would just elevate
18:51everything on the roster.
18:52They misjudged that horrifically.
18:54Maybe this is another misjudgment of where they're at, but they're signaling to you, the
18:58fans with all of their moves that they're exiting this rebuild, even though they don't have
19:03a quarterback still.
19:04So there's no doubt you can't just be bad forever, right?
19:08You can't, you know, we've defied that logic over the years, but in general, like when they
19:14did the 0-16 and 1-15, I thought, I know I got in constant bickering matches early at
19:21the onset of this show with Ken Carman about whether they were tanking or not.
19:26And Ken repeatedly would say they're not tanking.
19:29And I would say, well, of course they are.
19:30It was strategic.
19:31It was strategic.
19:32And he would say, well, the players aren't taken.
19:34And I'm like, yeah, the players don't, you don't need to tell the players to lose.
19:37You just facilitate an atmosphere with a bunch of young players, probably that aren't that
19:43good.
19:44And you'll lose a bunch of games.
19:45You don't have to actually tell them.
19:46You don't have to leave notes in their locker.
19:48Right.
19:48You don't have to send messages to their agent.
19:51You could just exist.
19:52And I think we know around the league, the teams that are trying to do that.
19:55You know, it's interesting, like the, the, was it the Dolphins got Malik Willis?
20:00Remember we had talked about Malik Willis, but then they had cut the legs out from underneath
20:04by dispensing of all the good players.
20:07And it's like, well, what is that?
20:09I seriously couldn't even name a Dolphins receiver right now, but that's what teams do.
20:14They, they strip it down.
20:15They get younger, they get cheaper and they stockpile more draft picks.
20:19That was exactly one in 31.
20:20And I think that's exactly what these last two seasons have been like the Browns have
20:24won eight games over the last two years.
20:27And throughout those two years, they've repeated, we're not tanking.
20:31We're not rebuilding.
20:32We're trying to compete with Kevin Stefanski and all of that stuff that, that, that led
20:36them to eight games, eight wins rather in two years.
20:39I think that this is a little bit different though.
20:41I think that they understand you've had back-to-back good drafts on paper.
20:46However, really, you look at the starting position from, you know, the retooled offensive
20:51line to the receivers, all the way down to our boy, Rocket Sanders.
20:54And there is a decent amount of talent on this team at the starting level.
20:58I don't think there's a ton of depth on this team, but I think there's enough like high
21:02end, young starting caliber talent on this roster that the Browns have effectively sold
21:08themselves on the fact we're not rebuilding anymore.
21:10And now we can stomach a Denzel Ward extension, a Grant Delpit extension, because we've
21:16got all of these extra draft picks to boot because we traded miles Garrett and we traded
21:20back to back-to-back first round picks.
21:23We bailed out of them.
21:24Yeah.
21:24I just, I just wonder if obviously like any team in a league, if they get off to a great
21:29start, if Shador Sanders emerges and plays well, all right, we can, we'll, we'll shelve
21:34all these conversations.
21:36Then Nick will be right, but we'll all be on cloud nine.
21:39A hundred percent of the fan base will be on cloud nine.
21:41If that was the case.
21:43But to me, there's, there's got, there's gotta be a little bit of balance here.
21:47Like if they just do what I expect them to do and start out the season one in five or
21:52maybe two and three, but then, you know, they, what seven of their, what percentage they're
21:57all like half their games, more than half their games are on the road to start out.
22:02Like they have a gauntlet to start.
22:04Okay.
22:05If they do what I expect them to do and lose a bunch of games, like, do you think the
22:10front office is going to, is going to be in hiding?
22:13Probably they were last year, weren't they?
22:15We didn't, Andrew Barry canceled the bi-week press conference last year after trading the
22:21week one starting quarterback five weeks into the season.
22:24Of course they'll go into hiding.
22:25I just, I just kind of thought this was, that wouldn't venture out that far from what the
22:32plan is, which is, you know, the rebuild.
22:36And that's where I feel like one foot in one foot out.
22:39You've got to take care of, you've got to have some good football players on this team
22:43and it's just good business, especially with a young team to showcase to a guy like Mason
22:47Graham.
22:48Hey, if you succeed here, even if the wins don't come, you'll be taken care of.
22:52Grant Delpit, what, what's he really won?
22:54I hate to say it, Denzel's my guy.
22:56What's he won?
22:57You know, a playoff game in Pittsburgh all the way back in 2020.
23:00It's been six years since 2020, but they're both great individual talents that you want
23:05to have on the Cleveland Browns that are a rebuilding team.
23:09So I can't get mad that they're taking care of good players because I do like when the Browns
23:14have good players.
23:15Like I would prefer that they extend Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit versus we're talking
23:19one in 31, Brian, body Calhoun.
23:23And who was the free safety back then?
23:24That was, that was pre Demarius Randall, you know, to Sean Gibson.
23:28I'm impressed you even mentioned those guys.
23:30So I have completely eliminated all them from my memory.
23:33I like this talent crop a little bit better than that talent crop, even though the results
23:37have been marginally better.

24:27And you know what the other spin is that this is a young team with a lot of promising young
24:32players that they're excited about.
24:33They want to see Swessinger, Fannin, Judkins, Bond continue to develop.
24:37And then this year's rookie class should make just as big of an impact.

24:51I think that, so when it comes to the quarterback competition, Lyman, you said it earlier.
24:56They're the worst quarterback room in the league.
24:58So you can't compare them to the other 31 teams.
25:02You have to just focus on like, who's going to win the job.
25:05And honestly, Deshaun's not the future.
