00:00The internet streets are making it seem like Shador had a better day than Deshaun.
00:05That is just day one, but I am willing and ready and willing to officially move the marker.
00:12Yeah.
00:14Shador, it's going to be a problem.
00:17Shador up one spot, Deshaun still at zero.
00:20Yeah, my person that was down there said, overall, Sanders was solid.
00:29Gabriel was up and down with his accuracy, and then Deshaun had the couple interceptions.
00:34The second one, he said, was completely Deshaun's fault.
00:36Look at that.
00:37He said the first one was a great play by Denzel Ward, though.
00:39Yeah.
00:39A great play by Denzel Ward for the first one.
00:41I know who your person is.
00:43How did you not know to begin with?
00:46It's Daryl.
00:47It's definitely not Daryl.
00:49I am saying yes, yes, and oh, yes.
00:51I thought it was really funny at first.
00:53You're like, I don't know who it could be.
00:54You know the one person I would text to be like, what's going on over there?
00:58He said that person, by the way.
01:00Yeah.
01:00Pretty boring day for the quarterbacks is what that person said.
01:02Ooh, that's a rough one.
01:03But again, Shador moves one notch over.
01:07He's at one.
01:08He's got one win so far in camp.
01:12Deshaun, if only we could have negative wins, because he's got two interceptions.
01:15That's a rough day.
01:15That's a negative.
01:16You're a wins above replacement.
01:18You're a negative wins above replacement player.
01:19Even Dylan Gabriel and Talon Green are at zeroes, friend.
01:23Now, did you make anything of the idea that Deshaun did get the first team reps?
01:26We do a lot of first team, second team reps.
01:28Now, Shador did get second team reps, but he got the first team, or at least the rookie
01:32wide receivers.
01:33So, there is a distinction there.
01:35He had Boston.
01:36He had Concepcion.
01:37So, we had some guys that will be starting, but Deshaun got all the first team reps.
01:41We'll see what happens tomorrow.
01:42If Shador does not get first team reps tomorrow, we riot.
01:47Is that what we're going to do?
01:49Yeah.
01:49So, I demand accountability from Todd Munkin.
01:52Fair and balanced quarterback search.
01:54Well, we think he's probably just going to do what he's been doing the entire time, which
01:56is one gets one day and one gets the other day.
01:58Yes, I think so.
01:59But I would imagine that Deshaun getting the first day, maybe he did have a slight edge
02:02leading into this.
02:03Now, we've been talking about the many things that have happened with the Browns.
02:07Obviously, Grant Delpit getting a contract extension today.
02:11That is very cool.
02:12Good to see.
02:12That's a guy that's overcome a lot of injuries.
02:15Denzel getting the extension yesterday.
02:17Jadavian Clowney being in town and potentially reuniting with the Browns after three years
02:23elsewhere.
02:24But Todd Munkin also spoke today.
02:26And I want to play the preseason sound here, Mac, because I think it's going to be really
02:32interesting.
02:33I started by saying I'm settled in for a prolonged quarterback battle.
02:38And then Munkin talked about the importance of playing in the preseason.
02:43We're going to play in the preseason.
02:44I won't back myself into a corner.
02:46Right now, I plan on playing the starters, but I plan on playing our guys.
02:49We've got to see what we've got, especially a quarterback.
02:51So I think how much the preseason matters is, I don't know Todd Munkin knows today.
02:58And I think that's why he said, I don't want to back myself into a corner.
03:02We'll see.
03:03Because I think there are a lot of things that can happen.
03:05But I mean, I would imagine as important it is to watch these guys go up against this
03:11defense and the incredible talent they have, you've got to see both quarterbacks in what
03:19I would say is enemy territory before you can officially make your decision.
03:24I just feel like younger head coaches care about the joint practices a lot.
03:29And then more of our old school football guys, they care about the joint practices, but they
03:33also care about what happens in these preseason games.
03:34Like Munkin comes from a time in football where preseason football mattered.
03:38And so I'm curious to know how much of that he has shed or how much of that he stays
03:43with.
03:43Yeah.
03:44And I think the preseason is probably more important to Shador than maybe Deshaun.
03:51Because again, Deshaun is the veteran.
03:53Deshaun is a guy where it's like, you just want to kind of see him go through the motions
03:56and be healthy.
03:57I think with Shador just continuing to show that he is a guy that comes alive when the
04:02when the lights are the brightest.
04:04I think that's I think that's why he has a chance to win the most.
04:07I wondered if the fan base was going to use that almost against him if he has a good preseason
04:11performance.
04:12Because what would you instantly think of Shador Sanders lights it up in, let's say, the
04:16game against the Bills or the Bears, whatever it is.
04:18Let's say Bears with the first preseason game on the 15th.
04:21He's awesome, right?
04:22What is everyone going to say?
04:24Oh, we saw that last year in the Carolina game in preseason.
04:26He was awesome.
04:27And then they would then point to a regular season that they were less than impressed by.
04:31And so it's interesting because I do wonder whether he'll almost be in a bad spot.
04:37It'll be discounted because it's been there, done that, got the t-shirt in a way that we
04:41don't do that to other players.
04:42It matters if he's against the ones or the twos.
04:45If he lights it up against the ones, it's really it's going to be really hard to discourage
04:49that, especially if, again, the prevailing sentiment in most practices is, at the very
04:54least, he just looks solid.
04:56Like, solid's good.
04:57Like, if Shador can be solid in the next three weeks, I think solid wins his job.
05:03Well, yeah, you can't look like the other preseason game that he got in last year.
05:07Don't even remember it.
05:08Exactly.
05:08You just got to wipe it away.
05:10It's part of the deal.
05:11But, yeah, I mean, it'll be interesting.
05:14So you seem to think that when it comes to Deshaun versus Shador, it matters more for
05:18Shador in the preseason games.
05:20How can we get these preseason games to matter for Deshaun, who hasn't played in a
05:22football game in 750 days?
05:24I mean, he just has so much more football in his career.
05:28And, again, I know a lot of it's not been positive here in Cleveland, but I just think
05:33he has, in terms of, like, the operation, in terms of, like, just the institutional
05:38knowledge he has playing 10 years in the NFL, I just don't think he has as much to
05:42prove as Shador.
05:43Right?
05:44Like, and I think you've said this, you're saying, like, you know, for you, he's got to
05:47stay healthy.
05:48And even then, if he stays healthy for the first 12 weeks, week 13, you're still going
05:53to be thinking, oh, he's going to get hurt.
05:56Yeah.
05:56I mean, I think Shador, I really do think the burden of proof is on Shador, and that's
06:00why I think a preseason game against one, specifically, is such a great opportunity to
06:04be like, see, I'm not just being solid in practice.
06:06I'm able to carry it over into the football field.
06:09I know the tug and pull I have with this is that I have seen Deshaun look good in practices
06:12and then not look good in the games.
06:14And like the part of the concern I have about Deshaun is when the lights go on.
06:18And I go back to some of the comments people are making back even when he was with the
06:21Texans.
06:22How much of that was Bill O'Brien calling the plays versus Deshaun actually being able
06:27to read the defense and being able to call out what he needed to do.
06:29And so I think he's very, very, I think he's made a glass.
06:34I've told you this before.
06:34I think he's very injury prone.
06:36I'm concerned about that.
06:37And so if you have a chance that he could get injured, I guess you got to reel that back
06:40in.
06:41But this is tough.
06:42I do want to see him play.
06:43I want to see him play against the big boys.
06:45I am hearing that tomorrow is Shador's day with the ones there.
06:48I would think so.
06:49I would have thought it would go back and forth.
06:50And then Roberto Shenanigans bringing back the Shadong picture, which I just, I beg of
06:55you, Roberto Shenanigans.
06:58It's too veiny.
07:01I just think it's...
07:02What are we talking about?
07:03No, you're talking about the right thing.
07:04I just didn't expect you to say that.
07:06What are we talking about?
07:07I'm not disagreeing.
07:10I'm just, I don't know.
07:11We need to bring that picture back.
07:12That's all I'm saying.
07:13I agree.
07:14Yeah.
07:14Stick and move.
07:14Enjoy the bulge.
07:15Not the right channel for that one.
07:16Stick and move.
07:17Yeah.
07:17Literally.
07:18Now, this being said, I do think quarterback health is going to be an interesting...
07:23You got to be in the analysis mode.
07:23I'm just everything in my brain that pops in my brain.
07:25I got to analyze.
07:26Yeah.
07:26I got to figure it out.
07:27Yeah.
07:28I don't...
07:28Thoughts on everything.
07:29I don't think we need any more...
07:30We didn't need all the thoughts.
07:32Shadong analysis on this one.
07:33We didn't need all the thoughts.
07:34I think we have enough for now.
07:36That's my bad.
07:36I was sorry and I meant it.
07:39But, you know, some guys have all the luck.
07:42But 216-474-0092, how much will the preseason matter to the starting quarterback battle?
07:48I do think, kind of calling back to last year, the Browns were clearly rigging that thing for
07:55Kenny Pickett with an emphasis of getting Dylan Gabriel ready to play if they needed to.
08:00And the whole thing went to hell when Kenny Pickett got hurt.
08:03And then he stayed hurt.
08:05He just was never able to get in there and do enough to win that job.
08:10Which is saying something because, again, they gave him every opportunity they possibly could have.
08:14I feel like in this scenario, Deshaun is the Kenny Pickett.
08:18Not necessarily that the Browns are rigging this for him.
08:20But just that I think injury is a very real factor here.
08:25And I'm almost praying Deshaun doesn't get injured because I want – if Shador's going to win this, I want
08:32him to win it in earnest.
08:33And I feel like an injury might undermine him a little bit the way I don't think it helped Joe
08:38Flacco or Dylan Gabriel last year.
08:40Well, if Deshaun gets injured – if he got injured today in practice, let's say, I think a lot of
08:44people would then think Shador didn't really win the job.
08:47He just got handed the job because Deshaun got injured.
08:51And that's not great.
08:52That's not great for Shador's psyche.
08:54That's not great for actually thinking like he accomplished something and winning out the job.
08:57Yeah.
08:58I mean, of course.
08:59Well, I don't even think – so to me it's not the psyche thing.
09:02It's just, again, you want to be able to – for this season to be a surprise.
09:06For the Browns to grab the NFL's attention and become a plucky 7- or 8-win team, Shador taking
09:15this job and just claiming the job, I think it's going to allow that locker room to get behind him
09:21as early as possible.
09:22Because if it doesn't happen that way – it's still possible, by the way.
09:25If he just kind of backdoors his way into the job, he can still win that locker room over.
09:31It's just going to have to happen during the play in the regular season.
09:35Yeah, definitely.
09:36That's a lot of a burden on a young quarterback.
09:39The reason why I say psyche, though, is I do feel like winning the quarterback competition will do something for
09:44Shador.
09:45But maybe I'm over-evaluating just how much Shador thinks of Deshaun Sanders – or, sorry, Deshaun Watson.
09:50We've done that like 12 times a day between me and you.
09:52That's on me.
09:53I've inceptioned you.
09:54It's Shadong all over again.
09:56Maybe.
09:57Maybe.
09:57I guess I – is that really a prize worth making something or making a big deal of, just beating
10:05out little,
10:05Deshaun Watson at this point.
10:07I tend to think it is.
10:09I don't think much of Deshaun as a quarterback.
10:10I don't.
10:11But I still think the idea that you went toe-to-toe versus somebody that is at least at one
10:15point as accomplished as Deshaun is at least something Shador can hang his hat on.
10:18And I just – it can't hurt you.
10:19I'm sure there are people out there, like Browns fans, and maybe people who aren't the biggest Shador fans, who
10:24are going to say,
10:26ah, you beat out Deshaun.
10:27Good for you.
10:28I don't think that's how the locker room is going to look at it.
10:31The locker room is going to say, oh, that dude over there makes $35 million a year, and you beat
10:35him out?
10:36It's more than that, 46.
10:38Could be 32.
10:40Could be 97.
10:41He's made a butt-ton of money to do nothing.
10:42But I do think, like, I think this is where the Browns have been really smart about positioning this of
10:49Deshaun's ahead of Shador because outside of an injury, for Shador to win this job, the optics are going to
10:57be Shador leapfrogged Deshaun to get that.
11:00Yeah.
11:00And it'll feel like an accomplishment, though.
11:03That's the part I want to hang on to.
11:04And I think as long as the locker room is in agreement with that, that that's how this happened, that
11:11Shador won the job, even if it means Deshaun lost the job, by the way, if Deshaun just played his
11:17way out of it, that's just a good sign.
11:19I do think there are enough guys in that locker room who go, hey, Deshaun has been in the NFL
11:2310 years.
11:24Deshaun has been, you know, one of the five best quarterbacks in the NFL at one point in his career.
11:30Like, I think there's enough people who can, I think, internally that can buy into Shador winning that job, solidifies
11:38him in a way, and gets that buy-in.
11:40I think it'll feel like a real win.
11:41I really do.
11:41And it's funny because I just think so little of what I think Deshaun is going to be, but I
11:45still think it matters for the reasons that you mentioned and where the standing of Deshaun was at one point
11:50in the NFL.
11:50Now, we do have Todd Monk in today at practice talking about whether they're going to do tackling in camp.
11:56Todd, could you clarify how much hitting you anticipate doing this camp, and do you tackle to the ground at
12:03all?
12:03No, no, we won't tackle the ground.
12:05We won't go to the ground.
12:06We'll thud.
12:07We're not going to bring anybody to the ground.
12:09I don't know why, but that no was probably the funniest, one of the three funniest things to come out
12:15of camp.
12:16And I got to say, Todd Monk has got some entertainer to him because he says some stuff, and I
12:20do laugh.
12:20What was the voice you did there?
12:22That was a big man voice.
12:24Which one?
12:24No.
12:25That was a big man voice there.
12:29Was it all in my jowls?
12:30Is that what you're saying?
12:31It's a big man's voice.
12:32We're turning Todd Monk into Andy Reid for some reason.
12:34Oh, if only.
12:36God, I love me some Andy Reid.
12:37We could just sit in Hawaiian shirts having cheeseburgers.
12:40The Eric B. Enemy comments were weird.
12:42Can we just say that?
12:43Yeah, they were.
12:44Things happen?
12:45Yeah.
12:46No, that thing doesn't happen.
12:47Yeah.
12:47Yeah.
Comments
