00:00he was out there today you can find all of his work cleveland.com joins us weekly during the
00:04football season our good friend dan lobby joining us now dan what's going on hey jake how are you
00:10doing we're doing uh fantastic football is back dan it's good energy in the air right nice to be
00:15fully back into training camp yeah it was good to watch a football practice again uh you know
00:21obviously we got done with the spring and then it was just sort of a lot of chatter and uh
00:24seeing
00:25what lebron was going to do and now we're back to watching football practice so uh everything's
00:29right in the world again yeah it feels good we're right back in this and of course uh it wouldn't
00:34be brown's training camp if we weren't talking about quarterbacks and we weren't breaking down
00:38every single day every single pass that they made obviously deshaun got the the looks with the ones
00:43today just looking by social media dan did not appear that he had a great day though he did not
00:49have a great day and at one point he threw back-to-back interceptions early in practice
00:53i don't really remember a particularly great throw that he made uh throughout the day i
00:59mean there was one deep ball to jerry judy but it was more of like uh you know tyson campbell
01:04really
01:04wasn't playing it he kind of pulled up and judy caught it so you know he just had a bad
01:09day and
01:10this kind of continues a little bit of a downward trend for him honestly if we go back to i
01:15think
01:15it was the second ota practice we were at he had one of the best practices i've seen him have
01:20and then he really hasn't been able to duplicate that in in the times we've been out here so um
01:25he's
01:25kind of you know at least to start camp kind of arrow pointing down a little bit well i thought
01:31chador wasn't great today uh but he at least went on a little run and and made a couple of
01:36nice throws
01:36and seven on seven it feels like he's maybe going the other direction obviously it's one day it's
01:42their first day out at training camp we're not gonna todd's obviously not gonna announce a decision
01:46on quarterback after one day he talked about how much this might drag out but how much does this
01:52legitimately you look at it and you say it can play an impact into who ends up being named the
01:57starter i i mean i think to some extent every day is going to count when when it comes to
02:02this i mean
02:03every day they're going to evaluate them and you know certainly there's still a world where deshaun
02:07watson can play really well and practice really well the rest of camp and and put together a series of
02:13of days in a row where he looks really good and maybe he takes hold of the job of course
02:17jador
02:17sanders will have that opportunity as well i mean i've seen plenty of camps where
02:21a player doesn't look sharp early and then the pads go on and then they start to string together
02:26some really good days so it's certainly not unheard of uh but every day matters in this competition and
02:32and while todd munkin basically said hey i just want to have my starter for week one uh or by
02:37week one
02:37i'd imagine he in reality wants to have a decision or at least be close to a decision well before
02:44that
02:44time so i think every every practice you go through especially in the stretch where they're doing 10
02:49practices in 11 days you're not going to have this kind of opportunity again once we get into the
02:54preseason and and the practices are a little more spread out so i think every day really does matter
02:59here speaking of that how important does that make then uh tomorrow coming up for shador sanders
03:07oh but he gets first team reps i think it makes it very important because it's going to be
03:11it's going to give us an opportunity to get sort of an apples to apples comparison because the one
03:16thing i will say about deshaun watson today is he was going against the first team defense and that
03:22defense after those extensions were signed with denzel ward and grant delpit plus you're adverse
03:27here now uh not just coming in via trade in the middle of the program like he did in the
03:32spring
03:33that defense is about as whole as it's going to be now malik collins is not out there so so
03:38they
03:38certainly are missing him um we obviously know i'm sure you're going to ask about this at some point
03:43they might be looking to upgrade that other edge rusher spot at some point but uh for what we
03:48know this defense is as whole as it's been and so that's what deshaun watson was going against and so
03:52i think if shador gets an opportunity to go against that group and he looks good and he's efficient
03:57it's going to be another check in the box for him all right dan you brought it up i don't
04:02leave it on
04:02the back burner any longer this seems talking to jadevion clowny after things ended the first time i
04:08i it feels a little crazy to me dare i say i really surprised by it and do you like
04:15the idea
04:15and the thought it was one of those moments where i'm like wait a second jadevion clown like they're
04:20talking to him but i'll say this uh the defensive coordinator that was here is gone uh miles garrett
04:28is gone and and those were kind of the two things that he was having issues with the opportunities that
04:33miles was getting um and that he maybe felt he wasn't getting and that's one of the things that
04:39rubbed him the wrong way so now it's mike rutenberg like i said miles is out of here so you
04:44know maybe
04:44that's enough and even if you want to go farther kevin stefanski is not here anymore so if that's
04:49kind of the if that was the crux of the issue those two or three guys then maybe there is
04:55an
04:55opportunity to bring him back and the one weird thing about jadevion you look at his last three years
05:00everywhere this guy goes he just piles up sacks he's had 23 and a half sacks combined in the last
05:06three seasons and i'm always a firm believer and i think the browns learned this the hard way
05:11you get one year with jadevion right like if you try to bring him back for a second year things
05:16are
05:16going to get a little dicey i don't know if the clock resets here and so this would be like
05:20kind
05:20of year one once again with him and he can come in and and be their number two edge rusher
05:24and pile up
05:25those sack numbers but um you know he is the definition of a mercenary at that position and
05:31he can still play so if he's good with everything and it really was just jim and miles and maybe
05:38even
05:38kevin then i guess you take a shot at it and again dan lobby with this here on the hotline
05:44this goes into a bigger thing right jadevion clown he's 33 years old uh i think if somebody looked at
05:50me right now and told me they thought the browns were going to win the super bowl i would definitely
05:53roll my eyes uh but it lines up with the extensions too and things that are confusing people about where
06:01the browns actually want to head you're signing a near 30 year old denzel ward to a contract extension
06:06you put grant delpit on a contract extension is the messaging for where this team is going forward
06:12confusing to you the same way that i've heard it confusing to some other of the the people on the
06:16beat you know i'm not as confused because i think andrew has basically indicated that like
06:23he's used the word rebuild and he certainly has admitted that this was this was part of a rebuild
06:28this year but it just stuck with me at the combine that when he was asked about free agency
06:33he basically said this last off season was going to be a little more conservative a little more
06:39targeted all of that and that next off season will probably be when they can kind of start to
06:44spend a little more money and start to kind of go back into being big spenders and be big players
06:49in free agency and when he said something like that what that told me is these guys feel like
06:55they're a lot closer than maybe some other people do um and they they feel like if this if this
07:00class
07:01this draft class hits combined with last year's draft class and then you've got guys like denzel
07:06ward and grant delpit in the fold you you've got you know they're they're obviously very high on
07:10the jerry judy bounce back we'll see uh you've got some of these guys in the fold already you can
07:15kind
07:15of set this up or maybe if you can find the right quarterback to drop them in uh whether that's
07:21a
07:21rookie or whether that's a free agent or a trade acquisition or who knows maybe chador sanders or
07:26deshaun watson proves they can be that guy this year i think they feel like they might be closer than
07:32people on the outside believe that if again if this class hits and that's a big if and then they
07:39spend a
07:39little bit of money in free agency next year maybe make some trades get aggressive again you drop a
07:44quarterback in this team can kind of accelerate things so i think what they're telling us is they
07:49don't feel they're as far away as maybe some other people do all right talk to me a little bit
07:54about
07:55uh todd bunkin our first full training camp day getting to see the way he ran things compared to
08:00the way that kevin ran them what stood out to you what was different so today was a tough day
08:06because
08:06they're still sort of you know you're only allowed to do 90 minutes on this first day they're obviously
08:10not in pads until next week so it's it's going to be a little bit it's going to feel similar
08:15it's
08:16not going to be these hard grinding practices however i i will say and this kind of tracks back
08:21to the spring i i feel like todd munkin is going to do more 11 on 11 uh kevin stefanski
08:26you know
08:27really used a lot of seven on seven you know in the spring he used a lot of seven on
08:31seven but even
08:31in training camp we saw a lot more of it i think we're going to see a lot more 11
08:34on 11 i do think
08:36once the pads go on and once they can start crossing that two-hour threshold we're going to
08:40see some longer practices and we're going to see more physical practices now he did say today they're
08:45not going to tackle so there's not going to be any live tackling uh they're just going to thud but
08:49i
08:49think it's going to be physical i think it's going to be long so so i still think we're going
08:53to get
08:53those very different practices from todd munkin but today it did sort of feel like kevin stefanski
08:59practice just because there wasn't a lot they could do other than i i do think there was still more
09:05of an
09:05emphasis on doing full teamwork i thought it was interesting that it didn't necessarily catch me
09:10by surprise but the no full tackling i think it's what he was doing out in baltimore when he was
09:15down
09:15there as well it was just thuds but people have talked about he was criticized in baltimore for
09:20running too hard of a training camp you guys getting injured too often without tackling i mean obviously
09:26there's room for injury it's football at the end of the day but do we ever get to a point
09:30that you feel
09:31like todd's being criticized here this year for training camp being too strenuous
09:37i think it could get there um and then some of it's going to be results based right like some
09:41of
09:42it is you know maybe it's not going to be because of the harder practices but if we get into
09:46the start
09:46of the season and guys start getting hurt or guys don't even make it to the season or they're they're
09:51out the first month or whatever it is um you know i think people are going to point to these
09:56practices
09:57as as a reason now how much of it will be because of that and how much of it will
10:01be playing the
10:01result i don't know but i do look there is still risk even if you're not tackling if you're going
10:06to be pushing guys and these 10 practices in 11 days and six practices in a row you know i
10:12keep
10:12thinking to myself ton munkin said there wouldn't be veteran days off but are you really going to make
10:17denzel ward practice especially if you just paid him all this money are you really going to make him
10:21practice 10 out of 11 days and six days in a row does he really need that even so i
10:26do wonder
10:27if maybe todd will back off of that stuff a little bit uh maybe we'll see some they won't
10:33look like veteran days off but maybe guys won't do as much uh but yeah look that this has the
10:38potential to even though i think it's a good thing and i think it's what this team might need a
10:42little
10:42bit this definitely has the potential to backfire and we could be sitting there a month into the
10:47season with a bunch of guys hurt or on ir or missing time and saying man maybe you did push
10:51these guys
10:52a little bit too hard in camp that might have been a mistake all right so much attention around the
10:56the quarterback spot but it's not the only competition we have that offensive line still
11:01going through a quarterback competition obviously no pads on like you said until next week so you
11:06don't get a ton from the o-line you saw some guys move more important to get figured out faster
11:11the
11:11offensive line and having five guys there or who your quarterback's going to be i think the offensive
11:16line just because i think first of all it's the easiest thing to figure out um i think they're close
11:21to getting those five guys but also that's going to be the engine of this thing whoever they pick
11:26a quarterback isn't going to be but like they're going to be more of a quarterback our buddy lance
11:33rising likes to always talk about quarterbacks you win because of and quarterbacks you win with
11:37whoever they get a quarterback is going to be sort of a quarterback you win with um and so you're
11:43going to need the offensive line to be really good you're going to need to run game to be really
11:46good those are going to be the engines of the offense this year those are going to be the things
11:50that that drive this offense this year obviously you need good quarterback play it's the most
11:54important position in sports but I think the offensive line and getting that sorted out
12:00quickly is important because like I want to see Spencer Fano I want him to be sick of seeing
12:06Jared Burse by the time we get to September 13th and you know they had DeJuan Jones out there today
12:11working with the first team and I guess that's fine make him earn it a little bit but what are
12:16we doing here the guy was the number nine overall pick in the draft you know why you drafted him
12:20and what you want him to be for you so I hope sooner rather than later we're going to see
12:24him
12:24out there playing left tackle I hope we get kind of this right guard figured out whether that's KT
12:29Leveston or Tevin Jenkins or if they trust Parker Brails for the center maybe it's Elton Jenkins but
12:34I think getting that figured out quickly and getting those five guys working together is really
12:39important I think it's interesting you look at the what we would have talked about walking into OTAs
12:45and everything else and it feels like so much of it was rookie wide receivers you have two guys in
12:50the room you're really paying attention to them have you felt some of the focus maybe go away from
12:55those guys in these early goings knowing that they played so well in OTAs it looks like they're going
13:00to be at least competent NFL receivers or are you still watching those guys with a close eye
13:05I mean I think everybody came away feeling really good about those guys and it's to a point where you
13:10just kind of don't want to see it you don't want to see him take a step back in training
13:13camp but I
13:14think you're right it's almost like your focus is off of them because we saw what we needed to see
13:19in the spring now again to go back to the defensive side of the ball they didn't have to go
13:23against
13:24Denzel Ward they didn't have to deal with Grant Delpit if he's playing in the slot or anything like
13:29that so they weren't going against maybe the absolute top of the line you know on this defensive side of
13:34the ball so that that's interesting and I want to see how those guys look when we get to that
13:38point but
13:39of all the guys that I trust coming out of spring it's Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston and look
13:46Casey's going to have some drop issues I think we know that I think that's something there's going
13:49to be some Sundays where I think fans are really frustrated with him but there's going to be
13:53Sundays where fans are really happy that he's a Cleveland Brown and you know as long as they don't
13:57just take a step back as long as they just kind of continue with that arrow pointing up it's going
14:02to
14:02be a good training camp for those guys but I do think because they had such a strong spring it's
14:07more of
14:07like all right let's just see more confirmation that you are these guys not so much hey let's
14:11see what you've got I'll last one on the offense here Dan but obviously Quinchan battling back from
14:17that injury we also saw we learned today Harold Fannin underwent a procedure I just watching those
14:22two guys working battling back from injury how have they looked Quinchan has looked great I mean I was
14:28shocked how quickly Quinchan was back in the spring and he's just kind of kept that going this was really
14:34our first look at Harold Fannin he didn't practice at all when we were out there during
14:37minicamp or OTA so I didn't see a ton from him today necessarily but he's really kind of as much
14:44as we talk about these rookie receivers and Jerry Judy and and all of that he's really the key to
14:49this
14:49passing game because he can line up in so many different places I mean he can even line up and
14:54take snaps at quarterback if he wants to do that I mean we saw Todd Munkin do that with Mark
14:58Andrews
14:58last year and we even saw Kevin Stefanski do that with with Fannin last year so I think his
15:04versatility and his ability to kind of hunt matchups and you know you can kind of find okay where who
15:10do
15:10I want Harold going against and then who do I want Casey Concepcion going against Harold Fannin kind
15:15of unlocks a lot of that ability to hunt matchups and try and find a favorable guy to to target
15:21on the
15:21defensive side of the ball so he's going to be really important and I think getting him back here to
15:26start training camp and having him being full go is really important and again Dan Lobby with us here
15:31for a couple more minutes I I I wanted to ask about Jared verse again pads are off so I
15:37understand
15:37defensive lines not going to be the standout in these early goings but talk to me about the
15:41leadership side of things yeah you get to see him out at another practice maybe a little bit more
15:44comfortable with the team was there any moment individually today that stood out to you from him
15:50not today specifically but I think personality wise he's going to be a really good fit with this
15:55group and and he's a guy that just sort of embraces I think being part of this team I think
15:59we all know
16:00that Miles Garrett was kind of his own guy and kind of marched to the beat of his own drummer
16:04and you
16:05know I don't know if it was it's fair to say he necessarily kept to himself but he did kind
16:10of keep to
16:10himself a little bit and um you know he he's just sort of miles and and that's who he is
16:16uh you live with
16:17it because the guy gets 23 and a half sacks and was absolutely dominant and it's not that he was
16:21a bad
16:22teammate necessarily he just wasn't always you know again he was his own guy I think Jared Verse is
16:28going to be a little more part of the group I think he's going to be more part of the
16:32room and he's
16:34young he's only going into his third year but I think he has to understand that you know even if
16:38you sign Jadavion Clowney I don't think anybody looks at Jadavion Clowney as some kind of great leader
16:43so it's going to be on him in a lot of ways especially as Malik Collins is working back to
16:48be one of the
16:48leaders of that defensive line room and I think he's going to embrace that and I think he's going
16:52to fit in well with the personality of that group all right Dan we got about 30 seconds I want
16:57to
16:57note from you early things of watching this team do you think there's any way that we end this
17:02upcoming season thinking this year's team was worse than last year's team oh worse than last year's
17:08team I don't think so uh because I think the offense is going to be better and it might not
17:14necessarily result in a ton more wins it's like we might not be talking about eight or nine wins
17:18here it might be five wins again it might be six wins again but I still lean towards this idea
17:24that
17:24we're going to come away feeling much better about where this offense is because they've solved the
17:29tackle position because they have some good receivers because you know more about Quinchon
17:33Judkins and Harold Fannin and maybe Isaiah Bond makes a jump so record-wise I guess there's a chance
17:40but I think we'll feel better about the direction this team is pointed because there's a lot of
17:46this young talent that we're going to I mean much like last year's draft class we're going to be able
17:50to look at this year's draft class and say I see where this is going with these guys so I
17:55think we'll
17:55still feel good about where they're at all right Dan you know I always appreciate you setting aside
17:59the time always good to get some insight from you and uh as training camp rolls on hopefully we'll
18:04be talking again sometime here soon yeah for sure thanks for having me
