Will teams be lining up to trade for Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher Tarik Skubal?
Transcript
00:00Doug Hart, Scott Anderson, 97.1.
00:02All right, so look.
00:06The athletic Ken Rosenthal did a story today and wrote about Scoobal.
00:13And I'm going to read one paragraph.
00:15A growing belief exists within the industry that Scoobal is a goner.
00:19And if nanoneedle surgery indeed repaired his elbow with minimal disruption,
00:23the frenzy to acquire him might even top what we saw with Juan Soto in 2022
00:28or any other July auction in recent memory.
00:34So what happened with Juan Soto in 2022 is he was dealt from the San Diego,
00:45from the Washington Nationals to the San Diego Padres.
00:49Padres got Juan Soto and Josh Bell.
00:51The Nationals got Luke Voigt, C.J. Abrams, Mackenzie Gore, Robert Hassel III,
00:59James Wood, and a pitcher named Jarlin Susana.
01:04As far as what the Nationals got back, this is like a dream trade.
01:12Now, we've documented some of the struggles in Baltimore's highly regarded system
01:19that we were talking about a few years ago and how Baltimore is loaded,
01:25they're loaded, the Tigers are trying to move Flaherty.
01:26Maybe Scoobal gets dealt to Baltimore and they really clean up on Baltimore's prospects.
01:31And there's been mixed reviews on what these guys have turned into so far two years later
01:35and probably somewhat underwhelming.
01:39If you get this trade, C.J. Abrams and James Wood alone,
01:47you know what their OPSs are right now for the Nationals?
01:519.60 and 9.33?
01:55So they got Abrams, you said, in this day?
01:57Yeah.
01:57So if you look back at the 2022 top prospects for San Diego,
02:03number one is C.J. Abrams traded.
02:05Number two, Robert Hassel was part of that trade.
02:08Number four, Mackenzie Gore was traded.
02:11Number five, James Wood.
02:12They got four of their top five.
02:16It's interesting, number six is the guy that they held on to.
02:19That's Jackson Merrill.
02:20And now, the Padres also famously traded James Shields for Fernando Tatis Jr.,
02:28an aging pitcher to the White Sox for a 17-year-old that turned out to be Fernando Tatis Jr.
02:34And we all know the Tigers traded John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander,
02:40and that wasn't considered a blockbuster deal.
02:43The return can be there if you move Scoobal.
02:46But there's no guarantees.
02:47Like, when the Tigers purged in the mid-2000-teens,
02:53they got Jake Rogers back.
02:55And they had a lot to purge.
02:56They just didn't really score all that much.
02:59At the time, like, on paper, these were good trades,
03:01but there's just no prospects or lottery tickets.
03:05And so you just hope you get the right lottery tickets.
03:08And, you know, this is the challenge that awaits this team.
03:12But as we sit here on June 1st, you know, there's a reason why Ken Rosenthal's sitting down
03:20and writing, you know, 2,500 words on Tarek Scoobal in The Athletic today.
03:26Yeah, there's a lot.
03:27There's a lot there in that area.
03:28And as it stands right now, he's somewhat predicting the bidding war that we hope.
03:37I certainly hope that there is a bidding war and that the Tigers can maximize this asset that they have.
03:43And, of course, the big if, as we continue to say, is if Scoobal's able to come back healthy,
03:46which there's no reason to think he won't.
03:49But things happen.
03:50So please, God, be healthy when you come back.
03:52No setbacks.
03:53Look strong.
03:54Go six, seven innings your first time out.
03:57Yep.
03:58No hits.
03:5912 strikeouts.
03:59Do it all, right?
04:00Be the guy.
04:02And then I think it would behoove the Tigers to move them ASAP as opposed to waiting to August 3rd.
04:07Even though, you know, some teams can be more defined as to what they are.
04:11Maybe they get a little bit more desperate.
04:12I just, I feel like you've got this asset here.
04:16You're going to get a, you should get a good offer for somebody like that at that point.
04:21And hopefully there are, and I think there will be multiple teams.
04:25But some teams are also going to say, and I always got, Rosenthal lists seven teams.
04:31But I think that a couple of those teams are going to say to themselves,
04:34we're just going to keep going and doing what we're doing.
04:37We're doing okay without Scoobal.
04:38Did Scoobal put us over the top?
04:40Yeah.
04:40But do we need to give up our top farm system or a top player in a farm system and
04:44do it?
04:45But some teams are going to shy away from it.
04:47Other teams won't.
04:48It's really interesting too, because we have this massive variable out there.
04:51And we talked about this a little bit last week.
04:53And that is a pending work stoppage.
04:55If there is a work stoppage and the game returns with a cap or more cost certainty,
05:02which is what the owners are after.
05:03Okay.
05:04And they're after this.
05:05And then they go, okay, or we want to take on this player that we under a new structure,
05:09we might not be able to resign even if we want to.
05:14Or do owners go, eff it, this might be our last year of baseball for a while.
05:18I want to win a World Series this year.
05:20Let's get over the top.
05:22I don't know what direction it's going to go.
05:24Yeah.
05:24I think everybody expects that the Dodgers would be one of the top teams there to work a deal with
05:29the Tigers.
05:30And yet, if you're the Dodgers, do you need to?
05:33For a rental?
05:34Well, you don't necessarily need to.
05:37But if I'm looking, if I'm the Tigers and I'm looking for a partner, I'm going to call the Dodgers
05:41for sure,
05:43particularly because of all the assets they have in their minor league system.
05:48Guys that are at double-A ball right now that look like they're knocking on the door to be promoted
05:53real quickly to triple-A.
05:54And, well, triple-A, you're just a step away from getting to the majors.
05:58So these would be players that hopefully could contribute next year to a Tiger team.
06:03But you've got to monitor.
06:05We'll see what happens, who's going to fall out.
06:07So you've got to monitor?
06:08Yeah.
06:08The first thing we're going to monitor is to see how Tarek Scoble is.
06:11Yep.
06:13There's a lot riding on that elbow and his left arm being back to tip-top, 100%.
06:20I mean, knocking on wood.
06:22It sounds like everything's good.
06:24Great.
06:24I just need you to be good for another two months.
06:27And then what happens, happens.
06:28Well, if nothing else, like the story concludes, and you mentioned the seven teams, story concludes, the deadline hinges on
06:35how well Scoble recovers.
06:37The chances of the Tigers recovering get smaller by the day.
06:41They are making this easier for Scott Harris to sell.
06:47And it obviously won't just be exclusively Scoble.
06:52I mean, he could clean house here.
06:55And at this point, probably should.
06:58Of everything.
06:59There's interesting ones.
07:00Like, I don't think I would be in favor of trading Casey Mize.
07:04I know he's hurt again.
07:05I know.
07:06I know.
07:06I know.
07:06I know.
07:07I'm aware.
07:08But I think Mize will get a good contract, but not an over-the-top contract.
07:16And I think you've got to hang on to some of your pieces here.
07:18Yeah.
07:19I'm not in favor of moving him, but would I listen?
07:21Of course, I'd listen.
07:22I think there are a bunch of players on this team that have some value.
07:28I'm not going to say they have a ton of value.
07:30Remains to be seen.
07:32Well, the bullpen arms are just, like, everybody wants bullpen arms.
07:36And the Tigers had a bunch of guys that look like, the way these guys are imploding in
07:41high-leverage situations, I don't even know what the point is in going to the bullpen
07:44anymore.
07:45Yeah.
07:46But does Spencer Torkelson have value?
07:48If you were to move him, a couple years left.
07:50He is a guy that does hit for power, but, I mean, each, we keep getting frustrated with
07:55seeing him with a batting average.
07:57It is, you know, less than 220.
08:00His OPS this year has dipped down to 720, but it's still well above average.
08:06But, you know, is that somebody that has value?
08:08He might have some value there.
08:10I'm not, you know, Glaber Torres would have value, but he'd be a rental.
08:16Yeah.
08:16I don't know.
08:16Does anybody else want Matt Verling?
08:18Probably not.
08:19Probably not.
08:22So, I'm not sure how many players they have on their active roster, the actual players
08:27that have the value, the position players, but the big one's going to be the pitcher.
08:33248-539-9797, phone calls, feedback, champ and chump, all kinds of votes coming in.
08:37We've got to get caught up on some texts.
08:39If you sent one, there's a good chance we are going to read it.
08:42It is Carson Anderson here on 97.1.
