00:05Karsh from Comerica Park and the Tigers closing out this series with Baltimore. Maybe closing out
00:11an era today. It could be it. It could be it for Tarek Skubel in his time as a Detroit
00:16Tiger. We
00:17all understand what's going on here. This is his last scheduled start before the trade deadline
00:23and we'll see which direction this goes amongst all kinds of reporting all around that Skubel is
00:31still on the market and the Tigers are seeking their the best offer they can find without fully
00:41committing to moving on from him which I think is wise. I think in fact I think starting him today
00:47is wise. I know it's a point of controversy and then some people think why even risk it with an
00:52injury and I think it is worth it because at this point I'm still interested in maximizing
01:00the absolute best possible return and the moment you do something to preserve him you give off the
01:08impression that it is not necessarily you you give off the impression that you're not that you're going
01:17to trade him you're not even considering not trading him and I think it's important that teams
01:22come at Detroit with their best offer and and don't think that the Tigers are a desperate peddler here
01:29you do not want to get less than the best return and in my opinion that's why it's important to
01:37start
01:37him today and to say all the right things people get upset I've heard negative reaction when the Tigers
01:44talk about still trying to win and I just don't get it because you do not want to white flag
01:50it you
01:50don't want to white flag it publicly you want to make sure that people don't think of you as a
01:56desperate seller and so any discussion any criticism of any Tiger or or AJ Hinch and that we haven't heard
02:06Scott Harris say this but any implication at all that they are giving up on the season all that does
02:13is hurt their negotiating position and you want to be able to have as much possible leverage so it's
02:20all subtleties it's all subtleties that stack up you talk like you're trying to win you go out and act
02:26like you're trying to win you manage to win and and you play scoogle today because we're in a position
02:35that this is a very very important trade deadline and one one that we will talk about for years we
02:42are
02:42going to talk about this trade deadline for years if they do the right thing if they do the wrong
02:49thing this will be a moment in time we are living it right now in real time that will be
02:54discussed
02:55for years and you know when you think about trade deadlines of substance and there is one trade that
03:02was made back in 1987 one trade that was made 30 years ago 30 that people still bring up all
03:13the time
03:14all the time because they traded a low a pitcher that went on to be a hall of famer for
03:19a player that
03:20helped the Tigers qualify for the postseason a great comeback against the Blue Jays and then they
03:26flopped in the postseason and the ALCS against the Minnesota Twins but it all would have been
03:32worth it had they won the World Series that year they didn't they didn't and that that that pitcher
03:38and a ball went on to be a hall of famer and so here we sit and for people who
03:44don't know Doyle
03:44Alexander came to Detroit for John Smoltz who was in in playing uh in the low minor leagues and and
03:51Smoltz went on to be a hall of famer for Atlanta and and Alexander did his job but it's still
03:57talked
03:57about to this day and I have a feeling that the 2026 trade deadline is something that we are going
04:03to be talking about for a a very very long time and and look it's uh there's a lot riding
04:09on getting
04:10it right and probably Scott Harris probably his his tenure in Detroit his legacy very well could be
04:20riding on this moment and that's hey man that's life in the big city that's that's what it is to
04:24be
04:25uh a guy in charge of of player ops with a with a baseball team is you reach these moments
04:32in time
04:33where you pretty much have to get it right and if he gets it wrong he digs himself a hole
04:40that is hard
04:41to get out from under and you know I mean I I at this point I don't know whether he's
04:47going to hit a
04:47home run here or not whether they trade him I don't even know that they're going to trade him
04:52but there's no reason to have faith or lack of faith when it comes to trading I I when it
05:02comes
05:02to free agents I'm starting to grow skeptical of what Scott Harris can do but when it comes to his
05:09evaluation of young talent you know there's there's things that he doesn't get credit for
05:15and we'll probably never get credit for but in the last few years we've dealt with get rid of
05:21Riley Green we've dealt with get rid of Dylan Dingler we've dealt with get rid of Casey Mize
05:27we've had callers say all these things and in the patience with those players has paid off
05:36we've dealt with people that wanted to trade everything last year at the trade deadline
05:41including move McGonagall including move Melton who look like cornerstone pieces moving forward
05:47and nobody's ever going to say hey great job sticking with Digler because those are some
05:51pretty ridiculous takes because they were so early in those guys careers but the guys some of the guys
05:58he's held on to have developed and you know these are subtleties this isn't like I'm going to go
06:04hang a gold star on this dude and Scott Harris is doing an elite job but just to sum up
06:10my overall
06:10feelings I do not have a hundred percent faith that he's going to get this right he's got to navigate
06:18something that very few get to navigate and that is have a like a future hall of famer a two
06:23-time
06:23Cy Young award winner and a guy that pretty much has to be traded it is up to him to
06:28get this one right
06:32and you know we'll learn a lot we'll learn a lot now what is why am I encouraged there's a
06:37couple
06:37reasons I'm encouraged I think he's got a pretty good eye for young talent I think he's got a pretty
06:45good eye for young talent the discovering finding and going and getting how you lead looks like it
06:51might be a good move might be a good move he drafted Kevin McGonigal that that also might be
07:02a move that sets his team up for a long time McGonigal just rakes man he just absolutely rakes
07:08and you know I just keep watching every night in absolute awe Max Clark there's reason to absolutely
07:16be encouraged by Max Clark so I and and I just think he's got a pretty good eye for young
07:24talent
07:24so when you got the chip like Scooble and you can go into other organizations which is is is in
07:32theory
07:32easier than drafting because you've got some professional baseball track record on some of
07:38these guys so I'm a little bit encouraged but just because he's got a good eye doesn't mean he is
07:45going to get this one right and I'm also encouraged because something that happened yesterday
07:54something that happened yesterday which again it's a subtlety okay it's these everything you do
08:01should be evaluated and some of it is big and some of it is nuance
08:07but yesterday they dfa'd Jake Rogers they dfa'd Jake Rogers the Tigers now have seven days to trade
08:14him after seven days if there is no trade he is waived and if he's not claimed he can accept
08:20the
08:21minor league baseball assignment but given what the market is like I suspect he's going to get traded in
08:29the next seven days do I expect a great return not really but I expect something back and he might
08:37be
08:37included in a bigger deal but there's two things I really like about this one is the obvious Eduardo
08:44Valencia showed up raking he went four or five with two home runs yesterday but two is this is not
08:50going
08:51to be a particularly popular move in the clubhouse Jake Rogers is a beloved player a leader and a guy
08:59that
08:59everybody liked but the organization opted to make what they thought was a good baseball move no sentiment
09:07no emotion just a justifiable but the cold reality of baseball move Scott Harris opted to make this move
09:15and people say scuba won't like it and who cares of course what is scuba not going to have Rogers
09:21catching for him today but you have to make tough decisions tough team forward decisions and Harris did
09:28it and that's the approach you need and you need to have if you're going to deal Tarek scuba nothing
09:36personal strictly business and when you trade a player like that that's really going to suck the life out of
09:43a clubhouse and they're going to be players in there that you have relationships with that are
09:47going to feel let down you can't worry about that you can't worry about that and so when you make
09:53a move
09:54to trade Jake Rogers and I'm talking about the life will be sucked out if they trade scuba
09:59when you trade a popular player like Jake Rogers it shows that you aren't particularly worried
10:07worried about what is popular and what is not popular inside of that clubhouse so as we sit here
10:17approaching the zero hour Monday at six o'clock I yesterday's result doesn't change anything as far
10:24as I'm concerned I say this all the time that I am taking up a position that I suppose I
10:30could be
10:30talked out of but right now I am a full-on aggressive seller if I'm running the Detroit Tigers
10:38a and b if if they do something to change my mind and win all their games between now and
10:47the deadline
10:4714 to nothing then maybe I could be moved out of this position but I don't suspect that's going to
10:54happen okay that sets the table here on this Wednesday from Comerica Park Tigers and Orioles
11:00afternoon baseball could be scuba's last start fans how you feel about it are you worried they're
11:07going to do the wrong thing or are you kind of excited about launching the next era of Tiger
