14:32A READING FROM THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST JOHN CHAPTERS 11 AND 12
14:40Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said,
14:45What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs. If we let him carry on in this
14:51way, everyone will believe in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.
14:59But one of them, Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of
15:05anything. You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for
15:10the people, that all the nation may not come to destruction.
15:16He did not say this of himself. But being the high priest for that year, he said as a prophet
15:22that Jesus would be put to death for the nation.
15:26Not only for the nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all
15:32over the world.
15:34From that day they took thought together as to how they might have him put to death.
15:40So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wasteland,
15:47to a town named Ithraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.
15:56Now the Passover of the Jews drew near, and numbers of the people went up from the country to Jerusalem
16:03to make themselves clean before the Passover.
16:07They were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another, while they were in the temple, What do you think?
16:13Will he not come to the feast?
16:19Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders, that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was
16:25to give them the word, that they might take him.
16:29Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had made come back from
16:37the dead.
16:38And so they made a meal for him there, and he was waited on by Martha, and Lazarus was amongst
16:45those who were sitting with him at table.
16:48Then Mary, taking a pound of perfumed oil, of great value, put it on the feet of Jesus, and dried
16:55them with her hair.
16:57And the house became full of the smell of the perfume.
17:01But one of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was to give him up, said,
17:07Why was this perfume traded for three hundred pence, and the money given to the poor?
17:15He said this not because he had any love for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having
17:21the money back, took for himself what was put in it.
17:25Then Jesus said to him, Let her be, let her keep what she has for the day of my death.
17:34The poor, you have forever, but me, you have not forever.
17:41Then a great number of the Jews had news that he was there, and they came not only because of
17:46Jesus,
17:46but so they might see Lazarus, who had been dead, and to whom he had given life.
17:53Now there had been talk amongst the priests, of putting Lazarus to death,
17:57though because of him a great number of Jews went away, and believed in Jesus.
18:04The day after, a great number of people who were there for the feast,
18:08when they had the news that Jesus was approaching Jerusalem,
18:12took branches of palm trees, and went out to him, crying,
18:15A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel.
18:22Jesus saw a young ass, and took his seat on it.
18:26As the writings say,
18:28Have no fear, daughter of Zion,
18:30see, your King is coming,
18:32seated on a young ass.
18:36These things were not clear to his disciples at first,
18:39but when Jesus had been lifted up into his glory,
18:42then it came to their minds that these things in the writings were about him,
18:46and that they had been done to him.
18:52Now the people who were with him,
18:53when his voice came to Lazarus in the place of death,
18:57and gave him life again,
18:59had been talking about it.
19:01And that was the reason the people went out to him,
19:04because it had come to their ears,
19:07that he had done this sign.
19:10Then the Pharisees said to one another,
19:12You see, you are unable to do anything.
19:15The world has gone after him.
19:19And there were some Greeks among the people,
19:21who had come up to give worship at the feet of Jesus.
19:27This is the word of the Lord.
19:30Thanks be to God.
19:36In our reading today,
19:38we come across a meeting of the elders of the temple,
19:41the high priest and some of the other priests,
19:44together with a group of Pharisees.
19:46They had evidence of what Jesus had done
19:49in raising Lazarus.
19:51They had indeed received their son,
19:54but they did not like what it was that they had seen.
20:02It could be argued that those in the meeting
20:05now knew exactly who Jesus was.
20:09Indeed, the raising of Lazarus was incontrovertible proof,
20:13but his teachings were contrary to the comfortable life
20:17they would be leading.
20:20Let us pay particular attention to Caiaphas, the high priest,
20:24for his role becomes pivotal to subsequent events.
20:30There is clearly no doubt in his mind that Jesus is a major threat,
20:34and see how he prejudiced the outcome of the meeting.
20:40Whilst the others were mulling over events and trying to come to his decision,
20:46he barged in and told them that they knew nothing.
20:49To him it was crystal clear what should be done.
20:55However, it is not quite as simple as that,
20:58for look at what he then goes on to say.
21:02The evangelist tells us that God is using him as a prophet,
21:06and the next words are not those of Caiaphas, but of God.
21:12Caiaphas could not have wittingly said what he said,
21:16that the death of Jesus would bring all God's children together in his name,
21:20and then have gone on to suggest what he suggested.
21:25He argued so convincingly that all dates were silenced,
21:30and the meeting ended with all being resolved to see Jesus put to death.
21:37We all think we are masters of our own tongues,
21:41indeed of our bodies, but how wrong we are.
21:45We should remember the story of Caiaphas,
21:48and how he stood condemned by the words of his own mouth,
21:51and the bluntness of the Pharisees.
21:55They had all the evidence they needed to believe,
21:57but they were so full of evil and venom,
22:00that they could not see the blatantly obvious.
22:07Then we move on to Bethany,
22:10and the room in the house of Lazarus, Martha and Mary.
22:16And the truth is that Judas, in his criticism, had a point.
22:22The ointment in the story could have been sold,
22:26and the money used to provide relief for the poor.
22:30Only, of course, that is not what would have really happened.
22:34For the likelihood was, as is suggested by John,
22:38that Judas would have pocketed the money for himself.
22:42The more important fact is that sometimes it is more appropriate to give glory to God.
22:48Whether this was the simple act of washing the feet of Jesus,
22:52or perhaps building a beautiful place of worship.
22:58At the end of the day, it is all a matter of degree and balance.
23:02A beautiful cathedral is one thing,
23:05but for a church to spend all its money on maintaining it,
23:08to the extent that it has no money left over for mission work,
23:12is another.
23:15Let us look at this simply,
23:17and we see that the answers are obvious.
23:22It is no more appropriate for the church
23:24to spend all its money on buildings or regalia,
23:27any more than it is for us
23:29to be obsessed with the material things of life.
23:38Let us pray.
23:42Almighty and everlasting God,
23:45give unto us an increase of faith, hope and charity,
23:50that we might obtain that which you promise,
23:54and make us love that which you command.
23:57Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
