06 July - National afternoon forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there, heatwave number three for some has begun in the south and southeast but for the
00:07time being it is restricted to the south and southeast. I say for the time being because
00:13things are likely to change from the middle of the week. At the moment high pressure is
00:18heading into the south keeping things sunny and very warm if not hot. Further north for
00:24Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England we've got a westerly breeze, we've got a lot
00:27of cloud coming in from the Atlantic and these weather fronts bringing spells of rain through
00:31Monday into Tuesday as well. However, from later Tuesday into Wednesday the high to the
00:38south builds more widely across the UK shunting these weather fronts to the far north and
00:42north-west of Scotland where it will stay cloudy and at times damp. Elsewhere into central and
00:47southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England it turns increasingly dry, increasingly
00:51bright and increasingly warm from the middle of the week. It also turns hotter in the south.
00:56By the end of the week we're likely to see widely low 30s heading towards the mid 30s. Now
01:02that's not as hot or as humid as the end of June hot spell and overnight temperatures won't
01:10be as high either. So this heatwave very different in terms of its intensity, not quite as severe,
01:18however it may be more notable for its duration because that high pressure not looking to go anywhere
01:24quickly and may well stick around through the weekend and into the start of next week.
01:30So the duration of this heatwave may be the thing that we're talking about by the end of the week
01:36into the weekend. But for northern and western Scotland, no sign of a heatwave for the time being,
01:41outbreaks of rain. Heavy at times but easing off a little into the afternoon. Northern Ireland,
01:46central and southern Scotland, northern England, some cloud breaks coming along, mostly dry aside from
01:51the odd light shower. Low 20s here, further south again and widely hot sunshine, temperatures into the
01:57high 20s across central and southeastern parts, low 30s in places. 32, perhaps 33 Celsius in London.
02:05Now we keep the clear spells in the south and southeast overnight but a lot of cloud elsewhere
02:09across northern and western parts of the UK in particular. Low cloud hugging the hills of Wales
02:14and the southwest and some drizzly stuff coming into the northwest of Scotland, Northern Ireland.
02:20So for many it's a cloudy night and it's a warm night widely. Mid teens and in some places
02:26staying at 17 Celsius. But despite a cloudy start to the day on Tuesday, the cloud across
02:34much of England and Wales thins and breaks. Widely in the southern half of the UK, sunshine returns.
02:39Northern England, thicker cloud at times, sunlight showers. Northern Ireland, mostly dry and bright.
02:45Southern and central Scotland turning drier and brighter. And the rain across northern Scotland
02:49turning more patchy into the afternoon. So for many it's an improving picture through the day,
02:53drier and brighter. We keep that heat in the south. Similar temperatures to Monday afternoon. We're
02:59talking again widely high 20s and in some spots 30 or 31 Celsius. Humidity much more bearable compared
03:08with the end of June. Tuesday night you can see not much rain on the map by this stage. A
03:14few light
03:15showers for the west and north of Scotland. Otherwise a lot of clear spells as high pressure builds more
03:21widely in from the south. And that will lead to more widespread summery weather. But later this week
03:29the hottest air will be across central and southern parts of the country. And we're talking about low
03:3530s and in some spots 34 perhaps 35 degrees. So a few notches down on the end of June heat
03:42wave but
03:43notable nonetheless. Especially for the duration of this hot spell lasting for at least a week if not long
03:51go. We'll keep you updated on all of that on our YouTube channel. Bye bye.
