00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ,
00:28who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were
00:34persecuting you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all
00:42evil love of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always
00:50show the most perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon
00:57me, my Holy Redeemer, for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you,
01:04and for having, for the sake of vile pleasures, turned myself from you.
01:10Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who ate the Passover with your disciples at
01:15Jerusalem, according to the commandments of the law, giving them an example of humility
01:21and holy love, by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet, wiping them with a
01:27linen cloth. I pray that this your example may penetrate my soul, destroying thoroughly any
01:35haughtiness and pride within me. Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility, that I may, without
01:41delay, perform the lowest ministry to all men. Give me perfect obedience, that I may, with
01:49complete diligence, observe as your commandments whatever your appointed representatives may
01:56decide. Give me the most fervent charity, that I may sincerely love all mankind.
02:05Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who out of your unspeakable love gave us the
02:11sacrament of the Eucharist, and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality,
02:18charity, so that you might remain with us even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:25Grant me, I beg you, O Lord, an earnest longing, and in kindle in my innermost soul an intense
02:33hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to the table of life I may receive you
02:39with chaste affection, complete humility and perfect purity of heart. May my soul so thirst for you
02:48now, and so languish in your love, that I may one day be found suitable to enjoy the delights of
02:55your
02:55eternal kingdom, to the glory everlasting of your name. Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when
03:04you were about to leave the world,
03:06commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples, and most earnestly
03:14commended them in prayer to your Father, most plainly showing how tenderly you loved them and us who were to
03:23believe through their word. Grant that my heart may evermore relish your word, and that I may find your words
03:32sweeter than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of that burning exhortation may so glide into my heart,
03:40that I may be wholly transformed into your love. So direct all my ways, O Lord my God,
03:48that your holy will may be done in and by me for ever and ever.
03:54Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who went out with your disciples across the Kedron Brook,
04:01and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken.
04:08May I entirely give up my will and always follow and love yours. May I, for your honour and for
04:15the
04:15salvation of my brothers and sisters, boldly endure any adversity, and be willing even to lay down my life,
04:23if your divine providence should so ordain it.
04:28Praise honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, as your passion drew nigh, began to be
04:34sorrowful and sad, with a heavy heart, and so that by transferring the weakness of all your members to
04:41yourself, you might be able to console and strengthen them, when they were in their time of fear at the
04:48approach of death, by this your own weakness which you have willingly taken upon you.
04:56Preserve me, I beg you, both from the immoderate sorrow and from foolish gladness.
05:03Grant that the grief which I have thus far endured may be for your glory and for the remission of
05:09my sins.
05:11Remove mercifully from me all distrust and unnecessary weakness, and confirm and establish my soul whole in you.
05:22Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who fell prostrate on the ground and prayed to your
05:28Holy Father,
05:29humbly offering your whole self to him, saying, Your will be done.
05:35Give me grace in every necessity and trouble to fly to you in prayer, and freely to resign and give
05:44myself up to your will.
05:47May I never unduly endeavour to escape from trouble, but receive all things from your hand with a quiet mind,
05:56and may I endure everything in meekness of spirit for your love. Amen.
06:05O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:17O be joyful in the Lord, holy land, serve the Lord with gladness,
06:27and come in oneish prayers and triggers on.
06:33Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
06:40O Lord, he is sure that the Lord, he is God.
06:52O do your way to this case with taxing
06:58And into this cross with grace
07:04Be thankful unto him and be full of his name
07:12O the Lord is gracious
07:16His mercy is everlasting
07:21And his truth endureth from generation to generation
07:35Glory be to the Father and to the Son
07:42And to the Holy Ghost
07:46As it was in the beginning
07:50Is now and ever shall be
07:56World without end
08:03Amen

09:46And the Lord and peace before his cross
09:55Lord, we will not come in the tabernacle of the Lord
10:02And let thy grace be moved with righteousness
10:12And let thy saints sing with joy for rest
10:20For thy servant David sing
10:25Turneth away the presence of thy anointed
10:32The Lord have made a faithful Lord
10:38Come to David
10:40And we shall not come in the tabernacle of the Lord
10:47All the fruits of thy body
10:51Shall I set upon thy seed
10:56If their children will leave my covenant
11:02And my testimonies
11:05That I shall learn them
11:08Let children also just sit upon thy seed
11:14For ever come
11:18For the Lord and children's eye
11:23Unto me and habitation for himself
11:27He hath longed for us
11:33We shall leave my covenant
11:37We shall leave my covenant
11:38For ever
11:39Here may I tell
11:43For I have a delight
11:46I shall leave my covenant
11:50I will bless the little
11:53Within dreams
11:55And will satisfy

13:25CHOIR SINGS
13:31A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 19.
13:38While the people were listening to these things, Jesus proceeded to tell a parable because he was near to Jerusalem
13:45and because they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
13:50Therefore, he said, a nobleman went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
13:58He summoned ten of his slaves, gave them ten minas and said to them, Do business with these until I
14:05come back.
14:07But his citizens hated him and said a delegation after him, saying, We do not want this man to be
14:13king over us.
14:16When he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned these slaves to whom he had given the money.
14:22He wanted to know how much they had earned by trading.
14:25And so the first one came before him and said, Sir, your mina has made ten minas more.
14:33The king said to him, Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a small matter.
14:39You will have authority over ten cities.
14:42Then the second one came and said, Sir, your mina has made five minas.
14:47So the king said, And you are to be over five cities.
14:52Then another slave came and said, Sir, here is your mina that I put away for safekeeping in a piece
14:58of cloth.
14:59For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man.
15:03You withdraw what you did not deposit and you reap what you did not sow.
15:10The king said to him, Then I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave.
15:15You knew, didn't you, that I was a severe man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I
15:21did not sow.
15:23So why then didn't you put my money in the bank, so that when I returned I could have collected
15:28it with interest?
15:30Then he said to his servants, Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten.
15:37But they said to him, Sir, he has ten minas already.
15:41I tell you, that to everyone who has will be given more, but from the one who does not have,
15:49even what he has will be taken away.
15:52For as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and
15:58slaughter them in front of me.
16:02After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
16:08This is the word of the Lord.
16:11Thanks be to God.
16:20We have here four things which, keeping to the metaphor of the text, we might designate as capital, business, profits
16:29and the audit.
16:33Let us first consider the capital.
16:37A pound was a very little thing for a prince who was going to get a kingdom to leave his
16:42servants to trade upon.
16:44The smallness of the gift is, I think, an essential part of the representation.
16:50May it not be intended to point out to us this lesson, how small, after all, even the high gift
16:56that we all receive alike here is, in comparison with what we are destined to receive when the kingdom comes.
17:03Even the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, as it is at present experienced on earth, is but like the
17:11one poor pound that was given to each of the servants, as compared with the unbespeakable wealth that would be
17:17theirs, the ten cities, the five cities and all the glories of supremacy and sovereignty when he returns.
17:28Now, let us consider the trading.
17:31You, Christian men and women, ought to make your Christian life and your Christian service like a matter of business.
17:38Put the same virtues and effort into it that you put into your trade.
17:44Your best business is this world, in this world, as the shorter catechism would have it, is to glorify God
17:51and to enjoy him forever.
17:53And the salvation that you have to trade upon, to make a business of, to work it out, in order
18:00that by working it out, by living upon it and living by it, applying its principles to daily life, seeking
18:06to spread it among other people, it may increase and fructify in your hands.
18:14And finally, we have the audit.
18:15Then we have the profit.
18:17The immediate results are in direct correspondence and proportion to the immediate activity and diligence.
18:24The truths that you live by, you will believe more because you live by them.
18:29The faculties that you employ in Christ's service will grow and increase by reason of your employment of them.
18:38And finally, we have the audit.
18:41Until I come, or whilst I am coming, as if through all the ages the king was coming, coming, coming
18:48nearer.
18:49We have to work as remembering that every one of us will have to account of himself and his trading
18:55unto the holy proprietor when he returns.
19:01There is a principle in this award which regulates God's dealings with us in either world.
19:07And it is this.
19:08The ground and secret of all increase is faithfulness.
19:12And we may rejoice that this is the rule of God's moral gift.
19:16For what had anything else except faithfulness been made, many would have been unable, or at least would have thought
19:23themselves unable, to advance at all.
19:26But faithfulness is in everyone's power.
19:30It is a simple, practical, everyday thing.
19:35But what is faithfulness?
19:39Faithfulness is a serious sense of responsibility, leading to exactness in the discharge of duty, or in the recognition of
19:47our accountability to our conscience.
19:50A feeling of having been entrusted with anything by God, producing a desire to use it as he intended, that
19:57he might be glorified.
20:02Faithfulness to Convictions
20:05So long as a man has not been silenced by sin, the heart is still full of still, small voices,
20:12speaking to him all the time.
20:14So long as a man has not, by rough treatment, severed them, the heart is full of little secret thoughts,
20:21which are always drawing him.
20:23These are convictions.
20:25Be faithful to them.
20:26For if you are unfaithful, they will get weaker and weaker, fewer and fewer, until they are no more.
20:35Faithfulness in little things to men.
20:39It is of the utmost importance that you be scrupulously accurate and just, in your most trivial transactions of honour
20:46and business with your fellow creatures.
20:50Do not imagine there is no religion in these things.
20:53No man's soul will prosper who is not an honest man, honest in the detail.
20:59The acquisition of use of influence are great matters of faithfulness.
21:07Faithfulness determines increase.
21:10To employ well your present is to command the future.
21:13The growth of your soul hangs upon its fidelity, and more, love, more joy, more peace, more presence, more Christ,
21:21are given to all those who, day by day, are true to the love, the joy, the peace, the presence,
21:27the Christ, which they already have.
21:29And that for two reasons, the natural law, which pervades all nature, that growth is the offspring of exercise, and
21:39the sovereign will of a just God to increase the grifts of those who use them.
21:46The excuse of the slothful serpent is the excuse of all lazy people.
21:52They becry themselves down, lest they should be called upon to work.
21:56They avoid the duties of life until the world forgets to ask them to fulfil their duty, although God does
22:02not forget.
22:03They glide through a useless existence to a forgotten death, having buried themselves before they are buried by man.
22:11And they think that their sloth shall be continued beyond the grave.
22:15That they shall sleep there an eternal sleep.
22:19For what hope or faith in endless life can these dead men possess?
22:26But they are faced with a rude awakening in the world to come.
22:29They find themselves standing before the tribunal of the Lord of Utility, the Master of Work.
22:35He asks for his own with usury.
22:39We have here in the parable a particular instance of this class of person, especially applicable to the Pharisee of
22:46the period.
22:49What was the reason this one talented man had drifted into idleness and uselessness?
22:55One might call it a religious reason.
22:57He had gone on arguing about the nature of God, losing himself in speculation as to the character and work
23:04of God,
23:05instead of making use of what God had given him, until he arrived at doing nothing.
23:11These are the men and women who make the secularist objection of some weight,
23:17that thinking of insoluble questions, as they are called, weakens a man for life and for work.
23:24This objection is fairly made against persons of this kind.
23:28For to such, the questions will ever remain insoluble.
23:33Action, not speculation, finds out God.
23:36Therefore, it is love and justice wrought out in life, not intellectual discussion and argument, which bring heaven nearer.
23:44Let us, then, pass on to the judgment.
23:48Give it to him that has ten talents.
23:53At first sight it may seem strange that he who has most should end up with more.
23:58And thus it struck the standard by,
24:00Lord, he already has ten talents.
24:04On the contrary, it was strict justice.
24:07The sentence was first in full accordance with the wisdom we derive from our observation of men.
24:14And secondly, with the laws of the working of the universe.
24:19It was a mere sentimental objection.
24:22Take first that side of it, which had to do with the slainful servant.
24:28Why take from him his one talent, with which he has done no harm.
24:33Give it back to him and let him have another chance.
24:36The man who has ten talents has enough already.
24:41Yes, he might have another chance when his character has changed.
24:45But it will have to be changed by punishment and not by weak, loving tenderness.
24:50He must be made to feel his uselessness, be forced to alter his view of God and of himself.
24:57Or else all the giving in the world is only going to do him more harm.
25:02To him that has it is given.
25:06Grace is born from grace.
25:08To him who has love, more love is given.
25:10To him who is true, will assimilate more truth.
25:16He who is pure, deepens in purity.
25:18And by the working of this law, the world is blessed.
25:21For the best is given to those who can use it best.
25:26Such was the account, the only account, which a person could give.
25:31Why he had loved a useless, and because a useless, a wrecked life.
25:36There was indeed in his wickedness a strange inconsistency.
25:40And contradiction.
25:42For he who could say, and truly say, as the secret of his whole life.
25:47I feared you.
25:50Was nevertheless the man to stand up with the most shameless effrontery.
25:54And say to the God whom he dreaded.
25:56Words so insolent to be used to a fellow man.
26:01So exceedingly remote may fear be from reverence.
26:04So easily may dread make common cause with daring.
26:11You will observe that this man in the parable did not fear God.
26:15Because God was great and lofty and holy.
26:18Had his fear rested on that breath, probably he would not have been much blamed.
26:24Or more probably still, his mind would not have been allowed to remain in that state.
26:29He did not, in fact, fear God for anything which God really is.
26:33He feared God for what God is not.
26:37And here was at once the nature of his fear and his guilt.
26:41It arose from a false view of God, for which the man was wholly responsible.
26:48There are three results, which appear to me almost inevitable, from a hard, cold religion of fear.
26:55It is sure to make religion a separate thing from life.
26:58The religion of that man will be a parenthesis.
27:02Religion the act.
27:04The world the feeling.
27:05Religion necessity.
27:07The world the delight.
27:08The religion shadows.
27:10The world real.
27:11Religion an accident.
27:12The world man.
27:15It is summed up in the history of the ancient Samaritans.
27:18They feared the Lord and served their own gods.
27:25The voice of fear is sure to produce cunning.
27:28I see it again in the owner of the very talent.
27:32He had no love or principle enough to do what he was told.
27:36Occupy yourself until I come.
27:40But there must be something for him to show.
27:42And something for him to say when the master comes back.
27:46Therefore, he just does what costs him nothing.
27:48And makes up my stratagem for what he leaves undone.
27:54Fear paralyzes energy.
27:57It was a true trade which the man drew.
28:01I did nothing because I was afraid.
28:05There is an awful negativity about fear.
28:08A solitude.
28:09A desolation.
28:11The fact is we all work up towards a final idea.
28:15But if there is no final idea, what should we work up to?
28:20Take away that final idea.
28:22And life in its immortality ceases to be.
28:31Let us pray.
28:34O God, whose never-failing providence orders all things,
28:38both in heaven and on earth,
28:40we humbly beseech you to put away from us all hurtful things
28:45and to give us those things which are profitable for us.
28:50Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
28:53Amen.
28:58May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
29:03bringing us to everlasting life.
29:06Amen.
29:08Amen.
