22 June - National morning forecast presented by Kathryn Chalk.
Transcript
00:00Good morning. We're likely to see some record-breaking temperatures as we head through this week
00:05with heatwave developing across the country and we already have some warnings in force
00:10for this. So this week it's going to be hot, it's going to be humid. We've already got
00:15an amber extreme heat warning in place for southern parts of England and into Wales.
00:19That'll also lead in to some warm and muggy nights, tropical nights as well, where temperatures
00:25don't fall below 20 degrees. So looking at the bigger picture, we've got an area of high pressure
00:31responsible for the generally settled conditions. We'll see day-on-day heating but also as it shifts
00:37its way further eastwards, we'll tap into the warmth that is in the near continent as we draw up some
00:43south and southeasterly winds as we go through Monday and into Tuesday. The peak of the heat
00:49though is likely to be into Wednesday and Thursday. We could see temperatures rising as high as 30
00:5427, possibly 38 degrees. But back to the rest of this morning, this is where we already have
01:01the amber extreme heat warning in force across the central swath of England and Wales. Across the
01:08north, cloudy with outbreaks of showery rain pushing its way further eastward, so affecting much of the
01:14central belt of Scotland. To the south of that, blue sky, strong sunshine, so do take care in that
01:20sunshine. And like I mentioned, the humidity will be building. We'll also see the risk of some
01:25thunderstorms breaking out across Devon and Cornwall. So expect the odd rumble of thunder,
01:30some flashes of lightning, some torrential downpours and some gusty winds. In that sunshine,
01:36temperatures rising 32, 33, possibly 34 degrees across the south and east. Across the north,
01:42up to 20 to 22 degrees. Through the evening time, that cloud and outbreaks of rain across the north
01:50and east gradually shifts its way further eastwards through the evening. Still some thunderstorms to
01:55watch out for across the Midlands and that clears its way eastwards as we go through the start of
02:00Tuesday. And then to start Tuesday, for most of us, we hold on to clear skies to start the morning,
02:06but another warm, uncomfortable night for sleeping as well. Temperatures in the north, around 16 degrees
02:12to start Tuesday. In the south, a tropical night is likely where temperatures don't drop below 20
02:19degrees. As we go through the start of Tuesday, there may be a few showers just towards the far
02:25south and east to watch for. Across Orkney and Shetland, cloudier here with some outbreaks of rain,
02:31but for the vast majority, some strong summer sunshine out there. Sunshine might turn a little
02:36bit hazy across western areas, but temperatures again will be rising up to 26 to 28 degrees in the
02:44north and in the south, 36 or 37 degrees. Do keep an eye out on the warnings as well. They
02:52may change
02:53as we get closer to the time too. But if you are looking for relief from the heat and heading
02:59to any
02:59open water, lakes, fresh water, do take care and be careful due to cold water shock.
03:07Now, as we head through into Wednesday and into Thursday, we do also have another warning in force,
03:13this time spreading that little bit further westwards. Temperatures could reach 37 or 38 degrees.
03:19There could be difficult, as well as difficult sleeping conditions, there could be some disruption
03:23to transport as well. And obviously, all the health risks that come with this too.
03:29So do take care. As we head into Thursday, though, that's where there's more uncertainty,
03:33there's more cloud in the forecast, but that will again add to the humidity as well. So do keep an
03:39eye
03:39on the forecast and on our warnings that are on our website. Otherwise, if you're watching this on
