00:00hey guys so after many many hours of driving we have arrived at the most northern point of japan
00:08so up the very northern tip of Hokkaido is Cape Soya and not much here it's pretty isolated
00:19pretty desolate and if you came here in winter that sea out there is often covered in ice flow
00:29that comes down from Siberia and the land is covered in meters of snow so it's fairly severe
00:37in winter that's a samurai who was sent here during the Edo period about 200 years ago to
00:44come and explore Hokkaido apparently and this structure was built about 150 years ago so that
00:53the Japanese army could keep an eye on the Russians interesting too the explanations there in
01:03Russian which we don't usually see explanations for things in Russian so we did see a bit of Russian
01:09around northern Hokkaido so interesting because the rest of Japan usually you don't see translations
01:15in Russian of things so interesting maybe they get Russian tourists here or something or maybe
01:21they're expecting unexpected visitors who knows that's an unmanned lighthouse over there it's
01:27automatic lighthouse so as you can see it's fairly desolate just a few shops a couple little
01:33restaurants that's a memorial from World War two to the Japanese ships that were sunk by the USS Wahoo
01:42which was a submarine and then also for the sailors of the USS Wahoo that were killed by the Japanese
01:51so
01:52the Japanese people who were killed by that submarine and then the sailors on that submarine who were killed
01:58by the Japanese illustrating the pointlessness of war isn't it so yeah when I look out at that view I
02:07always
02:07imagine what it would look like in winter with the the ice flow all around it and the snow all
02:13over
02:13the place it would just be white as far as the eye could see wouldn't it it's fairly desolate not
02:21much
02:21in the way of trees and pretty windy pretty windy as you can imagine that's why there's no sound on
02:29this
02:29video because it's just wind basically but if you look off on the horizon there really zoom in we can
02:37see
02:37Russia that's Russian territory over there sort of just see it through the haze country of the mountains
02:53anyway that was it the northernmost point of Japan more videos coming soon
