00:00Hey guys, another video for our Wheels in Japan playlist and a mini-series on crazy drivers in Japan.
00:06Some of you might have noticed we do post a lot of crazy driver videos.
00:10There are a couple of reasons for that. One is that we see a lot of it.
00:13The other one is that one of our junior camera operators quite enjoys videoing crazy drivers while we're driving around
00:20in the car.
00:21So when we get in the car we hand her the camera and she just goes to work.
00:26So in this case what we have is we're out in the rice fields, big long road, not a lot
00:31of traffic.
00:32But for some reason the guy in front of us there feels the need to drive really closely to the
00:36guy in front of him.
00:37So you know that he's too close by the fact that he has to keep touching his brakes.
00:41So he gets up really close, touches his brakes, gets up really close, touches his brakes, really close.
00:46Just no need for it, you know. And then he kept drifting across like he was going to overtake and
00:51then he didn't.
00:52So the operator is actually zooming in there to make it look so we can see it better.
00:56But we're actually back a bit.
00:59But for some reason they do this.
01:01Even isolated roads with no traffic feel the need to drive really close to the car in front.
01:06Here's the other thing we've shown you lots of times before.
01:08This parking on the pedestrian crossing thing.
01:12Both those cars could have got tickets.
01:15There's no point in stopping there. You might as well just continue through.
01:18Anyway, it's what they do. Funny ones.
01:21And the new phone laws, yeah, the new bicycle laws haven't changed anything.
01:27They're all still looking at their phones while they're riding their bikes.
01:30You'd think you'd just put it down just to ride the bike home, wouldn't you?
01:34Anyway, here's the thing.
01:35This guy's watching the baseball.
01:37So he's driving his car and watching the baseball, which is pretty scary, isn't it?
01:41But perfectly legal in Japan.
01:43As long as you don't touch the screen while you're driving,
01:46it's perfectly legal to drive your car while you're watching TV.
01:50And we see people do it all the time because it's what they do.
01:54It's scary, isn't it?
01:55And the result of that is we see a lot of this.
01:57See this guy?
01:59He was actually speeding.
02:00And he's drifting across and drifting back.
02:03And then he'd drift right over to the left and then right over to the right.
02:06And at one stage or a couple of times, he almost drifted into the car on the other lane.
02:14And that's often the result of either staring at the phone or watching TV.
02:18As we go over, take cars like that, you often look across and there they are watching TV as they're
02:23driving the car.
02:24I felt a bit sorry for this old gentleman.
02:26He actually skipped right over that parking stopper there, right across that garden, that overgrown garden,
02:35and onto a footpath and then into a post at the end of the footpath that's designed to stop people
02:40driving cars on the footpath.
02:42And actually three police cars turned up.
02:44There were two there when we took the video.
02:46And then as we put the camera away, a third police car turned up.
02:50And it was pretty sad.
02:52One policeman was telling the other policeman what had happened.
02:54And the other policeman actually laughed.
02:56Because it was really sad.
02:57Obviously he's messed up and hit the accelerator instead of the brake or something.
03:00Jumped straight across that garden where that cop is standing.
03:05And onto the footpath and then down into the post at the end of the footpath and smashed the front
03:09of his car.
03:10So I felt pretty sorry for him.
03:12Didn't feel sorry for these guys.
03:13We've showed you lots of accidents on this intersection.
03:16There are accidents here all the time.
03:17And it's a safe enough intersection.
03:19It's just that people drive too close to each other, don't pay attention, and run into each other.
03:25So we see accidents on this intersection probably once a week.
03:29Probably once a week.
03:31Which means imagine how many there must be if we're seeing one a week.
03:34There must be a lot of them.
03:36That's what they do.
03:37Nose to tail usually.
03:38Just not paying attention too close and boof, run into each other.
03:42So anyway, that was today's crazy drivers in Japan.
