00:00I thought maybe we'd start with this, though.
00:03Another homestand is complete for the San Francisco Giants.
00:07They won two of the six games.
00:08One of them was a miracle.
00:11And then there was plenty of other things that kind of went into the weekend that we just saw.
00:17But first and foremost, from Hello Kitty to Pride Night to the Cubs and their brand and the great weather,
00:26it was another weekend of monstrous crowds at Oracle Park.
00:34And I almost want to talk through this because maybe I even need some help with myself.
00:40Because I am one of the people that I'm about to describe.
00:46We don't seem tripped up by losing.
00:50And I don't know how Giants fans are supposed to go about either now or in the years to come
00:59showing their disapproval of winning or losing, I should say.
01:05Like, how do Giants fans, and I would love some of you to really kind of, can we talk this
01:11out?
01:12And can you describe your behavior at a time of, quite frankly, I don't even think it's that far to
01:23use the word embarrassing.
01:25This has been an embarrassing year as far as their play, the way they've kind of handled themselves,
01:32the moves they've made, the moves they've not made.
01:34Feels like almost everything has blown up in their face except for Bryce Eldridge's bat.
01:39And his eye, by the way.
01:40Good God, he's a mature-looking player.
01:43Just looks absolutely fantastic.
01:44And there's little things I get at Jung Huli, Casey Schmidt, Logan is back, all of those things.
01:49I'm not taking a shot at every player on the Giants, but this has been a really bad year.
01:55And all every Giants fan does, you either go to Twitter and get snarky,
02:02you call 95.7 the game and kind of express just exasperation,
02:09or you grab your wallet and go to the yard.
02:14And that, like, how is the Giants front office going to respond if everybody just keeps filling the yard
02:23at a time where the Giants are going on an extended period of disappointment?
02:29But I'm you.
02:31I go.
02:33I've got more tickets set up for this summer.
02:36Yeah.
02:36The kids love going.
02:38We're going.
02:39I love being out there.
02:40The ballpark's a damn jewel.
02:42You just answered your question in the last three things you said,
02:45which is I've got tickets already purchased.
02:48The kids love it.
02:50I love it.
02:51The ballpark's a jewel.
02:52And it's fun to be out there.
02:54And even though, you know, you can root for the home team,
02:56and this year they're winning at a 42% clip, and you go out there,
03:00and so you have a 58% chance of not seeing them win based on what they've done.
03:05But all those other things, the ballpark, the kids like it.
03:09There's a lot to do.
03:10The food is good if you want to eat food there.
03:12The views are spectacular.
03:13The weather is amazing.
03:14And so, yeah, you look at the actual product,
03:17and you realize this is a bad baseball team.
03:19They don't win a lot of games, and, you know,
03:22they can be exciting and thrilling and all the rest of it,
03:25but you don't go out there thinking, if they don't win,
03:27I'm going to have an awful time because the experience is awesome.
03:31So let me just, I'm sort of just in exploration mode here.
03:36That doesn't make us complicit, does it?
03:39Do you know what I mean?
03:40I do, yeah.
03:41Are we supposed to be acting a different way?
03:44And will the front office and ownership not be compelled to set alarms off
03:52with regard to what's going on here if this is how we all continue to conduct ourselves?
04:00Ken Rosenthal dropped an article just a couple of hours ago.
04:04In it seems to be the first answer to a question that has been thrown out
04:10over the last couple of weeks, and that is,
04:13would the Giants completely move the axis of the trade deadline in Major League Baseball
04:18by making Logan Webb available?
04:21The article suggests no.
04:24No.
04:25And I think that what we're talking about right now is answer number one
04:29as to why they wouldn't.
04:30Why would they?
04:31Right.
04:32Why would they feel the need to do something that's either bold or against the grain
04:41or sort of against what they want?
04:44Like, they don't, you don't want to lose Logan Webb's.
04:48You don't want to lose homegrown, really, really, really good players.
04:52You don't want to do that.
04:53And the Giants are like, why would we?
04:55Even if it, well, it might be the smart baseball move.
04:58So, why would we?
05:00You love coming out to watch him pitch.
05:03So, we'll keep him.
05:04Exactly.
05:05We'll keep him, and he's good, and honestly, he's under team control for, what,
05:09two more years?
05:10And so, you're going to have him, and the hope is that next year is a little bit
05:13better, and if you have Logan Webb, then you're going to have a better chance
05:17at being a good team.
05:18And if you don't have Logan Webb, you're going to go out there and try to find
05:21a Logan Webb.
05:22So, I get that part of it.
05:23And the whole thing about, are the fans complicit because they're still showing
05:28up to a team that has a 400 winning percentage?
05:32I don't really see it that way.
05:34And the team, I do believe, they're trying to put together a good team.
05:38It's not like they're going full on, like, fire sale, and we're just going to
05:43trade all our good players and bring up AAA guys, and, you know, we're going to
05:46go on the cheap.
05:47They're trying to be good.
05:49And I do think that as a fan, you could look at that and be disappointed that
05:52they're not good, but you could also, I think, look and say, you know, I think
05:56that you're mostly trying to be good.
05:58Let's unpack that for a second.
06:00Are they trying to be good?
06:02Sure.
06:03Are they trying as hard as they could?
06:05Well, probably not.
06:07Like, I don't even know what that means.
06:09Like, do you want them to be like the New York Mets and shovel hundreds of
06:12millions of dollars at guys who turned out to not be very good?
06:15No, not asking them to be stupid, but sometimes I get mildly bugged by this
06:24constant, hey, we're 11th in baseball, in payroll.
06:28You know what my response to that is?
06:31Why are you only 11th?
06:33Why?
06:35Why is that okay?
06:37You're not 11th in income.
06:41You're not 11th in market.
06:43You're not 11th in the National League.
06:44You're not 11th in brand value.
06:49You're not 11th in valuation.
06:53You're top five.
06:54So be top five.
06:56I don't think it's crazy for us to demand that.
07:00You're top five.
07:01Be top five.
07:03Why don't, why is Toronto outspending you?
07:07Why is Detroit outspending you?
07:09Why?
07:10You're not these teams.
07:12You are making so much money.
07:17This is the second homestand weekend Saturday in a row where we've got cameras out past the bridge
07:24because the lines to get into the stadium three hours, two hours before first pitch
07:31are extending all the way to Mission Rock because you've got either Star Wars, Darth Vader,
07:37or Hello Kitty inside.
07:39Hello Kitty.
07:39Hello Kitty.
07:42And so you're printing the stuff.
07:45So am I wrong to say you have a nice payroll?
07:49I want you to have a badass payroll.
07:51Right.
07:52You're not wrong to say that, but they're not interested in that.
07:55Well, but then, okay.
07:57Yeah, I get it.
07:59Nothing has compelled them to do so, so far.
08:02Right.
08:03And would like 20,000 fans at Oracle Park, would that compel them?
08:07I would bet that does not compel them.
08:10What compels them is the old balance sheet, and they want to make money or break even,
08:15and with that new development that they have now, they are printing money.
08:19And so when you make money, you don't necessarily want to like shovel it into the furnace to try
08:24to make your baseball team better.
08:25If fans are already showing up anyway, what would compel you?
08:29I don't know.
08:30Be a good owner?
08:31Like that's what good owners do?
08:34Have just a burning desire to win?
08:36Like Joe Lacob?
08:37Right.
08:39Just a thought.
