00:00Let's talk some baseball tonight. We've got the Tigers taking on the Astros in the battle of who
00:05can hang around in the playoff race. Both teams supremely disappointing. Probably Detroit may be
00:11more disappointing, Joe, than Houston because Houston's just had so many injuries. What's
00:15Detroit's excuse? Right now, Houston is a light favorite, as you can see, minus 130 over Detroit.
00:22Tang starts for Houston. Melton starts for Detroit. Total eight and a half. Do they get to eight and
00:28a half tonight? I guess that would be my question. What do you like in tonight's game?
00:33I liked Mize and Detroit yesterday, not to get swept by the Guardians, but that game got rained
00:39out. So they kind of got an extra day's worth of rest there heading into this Houston matchup. And
00:45I know Scoville's got to be really happy that he came back and watched his team once again,
00:51give him absolutely no run support. But I do think runs are coming in this one. I like Melton. I
00:57think
00:57the kid has been phenomenal. Another one of these young arms that Detroit somehow figures out a way
01:04to to get into the rotation. It turns out to be much better than people think. So I do think
01:10that
01:10runs could be coming in this one. I tend to go over eight and a half might be a lower
01:16number here,
01:17given the firepower, especially in Houston, that we will likely see here against these pitching staffs.
01:23One of the best series of the week occurs when the Dodgers take on the Rays. In fact,
01:27the pitching matchups for the next two days are fantastic. If Shohei Ohtani ends up pitching,
01:33which we're still not positive that he will. We're sort of getting indication that he will. But
01:37I with him, it's all up in the air. I'm not going to try to make a prediction if this
01:42guy plays or not,
01:42including tonight. And I guess that could move the line to Joe. Nick Martinez starts for Tampa Bay
01:47and Eric Lauer starts for LA. And this is about as low as a home favorite that you're going to
01:55see LA
01:56at minus 168, maybe partially because of Ohtani's uncertainty also with Lauer on the mound tonight.
02:01What do you think?
02:04Yeah, it wasn't good. I mean, White Sox gave them all they could handle here in that weekend series.
02:09And they lost yesterday, 6-4, 0-7 with runners in scoring position. Never a good thing.
02:16But listen, Tampa is Tampa at home. If the trop is one thing. Tampa on the road has proven to
02:23be
02:23a little bit of something else here. That total at nine on a warm night, apparently. And Mookie
02:31Betts seems to be getting hot. And if that's the case, that's good news for the Dodgers.
02:35I tend to once again think we're likely going to get some runs in this one with Martinez and Lauer
02:41going at it. Welcome to the early line here on Sports Grid. Happy Monday to all of you. Let's
02:47review Major League Baseball from over the weekend where it's pitching in the National League. That
02:53Cy Young award race is certainly heating up. It's shifting back and forth between two pitchers for
02:58the moment. That's been Christopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies and Jacob Mizorowski of the
03:03Milwaukee Brewers. But let's also not discount Shohei Ohtani and Chris Sale and so many other
03:08pitchers too. What a race it's been. But Jacob Mizorowski in particular is getting a lot of
03:13attention because he struck out 15 batters in a complete game one hitter to beat the Phillies on
03:18Friday night. One year to the day from his Major League Baseball debut. If you remember one year ago,
03:25he made his debut and a month later, he was in the All-Star game. But right now, Joe, he's
03:29not just in
03:30the All-Star game. It would appear that there's certainly a chance that he could end up winning
03:34the Cy Young. Let's hear from Pat Murphy, the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers on The Miz.
03:41Amazing. Amazing young man. Really is, you know, Forrest Gump-like. You know what I mean?
03:47It's just, he's amazingly real, naive to a lot of things, and it's beautiful. You know,
03:54he just goes out and lets it eat. Yeah, he's been fantastic, Joe. But, you know,
04:01this is going to be like an award season for the ages across the league because, yes,
04:07it's fun to have Ohtani winning MVP and Judge winning MVP in the same Cy Youngs. But we're
04:12going to get so many different players winning awards this season. And in particular, I guess
04:17I would ask you, do you think that it is better to bank on Christopher Sanchez, who you know,
04:25and I understand we'll talk about yesterday, but who's going to go eight, nine innings like
04:29almost every time? Or is it better to bank on the guy that throws 105 miles an hour? I mean,
04:34that seems to be like a tenuous pick to try and take a guy like that. I don't know which
04:39way this
04:39is going to go. Well, he's just two totally different pitchers, right? Two totally different
04:47styles. Miz, the way Schwarber, Trey Turner, and Bryce Harper struck out to start that game,
04:54their faces alone going up against 104, 105 mile an hour fastballs. And then he's throwing these
05:02off speed pitches, which was just, it was laughable. He reminds me of kind of a throwback. It feels like
05:09the old Nolan Ryan days, right? If they can keep this kid healthy, I don't think anybody's in his
05:15class. The problem though, and you notice, Craig, that's a big if a guy that throws, you know, a half
05:22dozen, you know, six to 800 plus mile an hour fastballs. Every game is it's going to be worth
05:30keeping an eye on it. They can keep them healthy. I think it's his award. But Sanchez is a guy,
05:35like
05:35you said, I mean, yesterday was the first time we haven't seen him in how long not go at least
05:40seven innings. So it two totally different types of pitchers, but health is going to play a big role
05:45into how far Miz can go. Definitely. So meanwhile, the New York Yankees place another player on the
05:52injured list. This time it's Trent Grisham, who was really doing well recently and starting to sort
05:58turn his season around. So now of course they'll be without Grisham and without Aaron Judge. But the
06:05other story that's percolating in baseball, Joe, which I don't understand. So you're going to have
06:11to enlighten me. Aaron Boone stands by his decision on Aroldis Chapman, not pitching in the 2022
06:19postseason. Okay. I get it. Aroldis Chapman is sort of indicating that he wouldn't want to go back
06:25and play for the Yankees without an apology. I get that too. But why is this a story, Joe?
06:32The Red Sox are not trading Aroldis Chapman to the Yankees. The Red Sox are not helping the Yankees
06:38in a postseason push. Why is this story even coming out? These two teams don't make trades. Maybe a
06:45minor league player once every five years. But why is this a story? I have no idea. Chapman, folks,
06:51he's not going to the Yankees. No one on the Red Sox is going to the Yankees in July. It's
06:58not
06:58happening. This was what, Craig, four years ago? Like 2020? What's going on here? Why is this?
07:05What is this even a topic of calm? Everybody knows, especially it was a Yankees fan back in 2022.
07:13What a crap shoot it was with Chapman. So sure, when he was good, he was great. But
07:18there were a lot of other things at that time going on, certainly behind the scenes with him. So
07:24yeah, no, I mean, to continue to bring this up, I guess it's better than having to answer questions
07:30if you're boony about where are we with Aaron Judge? Like what's the doctor doing? So maybe it's
07:38kind of it's refreshing not to have to answer those same stupid questions about who the doctor is and
07:43what Aaron Judge is doing. So I guess maybe there's a reprieve there for him. But I'm with
07:49you. Never going to be a reunion. Not this year, not next year, not the year after. I don't even
07:54know
07:54why we're talking about it. Yeah, I mean, more chance of a reunion maybe as a free agent than a
08:00trade. I mean, come on. Like, I mean, this just doesn't happen in sports. I mean, it's like the
08:06Giants trading to the Dodgers at the deadline. Like, I mean, these things don't happen. The division
08:11rivals don't help each other. Giancarlo Stanton had a setback in his recovery from a left calf
08:17strain. He's been out since the end of April. The Yankees sounds like they're going to slow play this
08:22and maybe just try to get him back. And he was great, by the way, in the postseason. So I
08:26think
08:26that's all they're going to be looking for from him. Get him back in DH, get him back in September.
08:31Meanwhile, the Braves, Joe, have lost Spencer Strider yet again. And this has to be one of those
08:36situations that you kind of feel like you can't count on the player. And that's really sad to say,
08:41but it's been two of the last three years where Strider basically has not been able to pitch.
08:47Braves have once again had to go through a ton of injuries this season, including Drake Baldwin,
08:52who's getting ready to come back. But Joe, I do suppose if you're Alex Anthopoulos and you're
08:58the president of the Braves at this point, it's a horrible injury. But don't you kind of feel good
09:02about the Braves going out and just getting somebody? I mean, they have one of the best records
09:06in baseball. I don't know that you can replace this player specifically, but the Braves are not going to
09:10sit on their hands. They'll get somebody else. Yeah, no. And it's unfortunate, too. But you're
09:16talking about a guy here now. The velocity dip from about 96 to 88 was a good indicator that there
09:23might be something wrong. But this is a guy now that's had Tommy John surgery. It's had issues with
09:29that elbow prior. So it's not a good situation. I mean, they had hoped he'd come back and he had
09:36flashed some signs of maybe getting back to where he was early on. But it's gotten progressively worse.
09:44And it's unfortunate. But I hope nothing. I hope maybe just some rest and let him go and do his
09:50thing. And maybe we see him again. But I have my doubts. But I don't doubt that the Braves will
09:55go
09:56out and find somebody else to be able to replace him in that rotation. Meanwhile, an irreplaceable
10:02player, one of the most important players to any baseball franchise is going to be the amount of
10:08importance that Jose Ramirez means to the Cleveland Guardians, because this is not a player Joe that
10:13you can replace. And the Guardians are certainly not going to be able to do it. These hammock bone
10:17injuries are not ones that you recover from quickly. And when you do, you don't come back with the same
10:22power. Cleveland is one of the favorites to get to the postseason. And I still think they probably can
10:27get there. But they're going to have to really just hang on to the rope here for a bit, because
10:33losing him is like any other player. You're moving from a team. You probably replace him. You can't
10:37with this guy. Yeah. Yeah. Which is one of the big reasons why I love Detroit yesterday with
10:42Mize on the mound, because the Guardians are having a hard time hitting as it is. Now you've lost your
10:48power bat. You've lost the one guy in that lineup that really was a catalyst for all of it. And
10:55yeah, it's they're not the Yankees, right? You can't lose a guy like Aaron Judge and still expect
11:01to win games. So and that's kind of the equivalent to them. Ramirez is huge for that team. And they're
11:08going to have to grin and bear it for a little while. Hopefully they get him back sooner rather
11:12than later. Sometimes I read a headline and I want to laugh here. OK, so Bo Bichette is expected to
11:19opt
11:19out of his final two years, according to the USA Today. We have not even hit July. We have not
11:25even
11:26hit August. We have not played September. Bo Bichette, Joe, could hit a home run every day for
11:31the next 20 days and won't opt out. So please give me a break. Like, let's play the end of
11:36the season,
11:36Joe. Can we before we get to these sort of decisions? I mean, we're literally not in August
11:41or even September yet. But it's underdog. I mean, it's got it, right? I mean, who knows better than
11:51the onion dog or something? Is this the onion? Yeah, exactly. Come on. Stop. Three months left
11:56in the season. The guy can't get in a home run every day for the next week. Exactly.
12:07All right. We're going to turn it over to Joe for his selection. I got to tell you,
12:11this is a surprising one for me, Joe. Joe, usually really good with this, but he's going to be backing
12:16a team that's sort of slumping in a big way here, Joe. Let's make the case for a baseball team
12:22to come
12:22out with a W today. Well, I, I, Loris Gurriel looks like he is going to be back here for
12:29the Arizona
12:31Diamondbacks who are home for this game, but they're taking on the angels. Let's not make it
12:36seem like they're, uh, they're taking on the Dodgers or the Yankees here. They're taking on
12:40the angels. I like Nelson. Uh, his, he's actually had a four consecutive quality starts here. He's
12:47also been very good at home in this building. Uh, Urena is a good rookie for the angels, uh, but
12:54I like
12:55the bats of Arizona. If they get Gurriel back now off the IL, uh, this is a team that is
13:00underperformed,
13:02uh, to this particular point, but I think, uh, against an angels team with no bullpen, I think
13:07they, I think they can get back on track and the prices, the price is right here in this one,
13:12Craig.
13:13All right. We'll go to a St. Louis for me and, uh, I'm going to go against a pitcher here
13:19and that
13:19would be going against Lucas G Alito, taking Alec Burleson of the St. Louis Cardinals today going
13:27over one and a half total bases at plus 1000. The Cardinals are playing good baseball. The Padres
13:33playing better lately, but their starting pitching is definitely left a lot to be desired. So I'll play
13:38the big bat of Burleson today for the Cardinals at home in Bush stadium, that game later tonight.
13:45All right. We got to take a quick time out here on the early line. When we come back next,
13:50it's time to dive back into the prediction markets. We'll take a look at all of the odds
13:55and tickets today, especially on the world cup matches were set to kick off with the first match
14:01beginning at 12 PM Eastern. You're watching the early line here on sports grid, plenty more to come
14:06with me, Craig Mish along with Joe Ranieri, and we'll be right back after this. All right. Now let's
14:11take a look at some major league baseball today over on Kalshi. We've got the Astros taking on
14:16the Tigers. Certainly both teams have not had the season that they have wanted to Detroit gets a
14:22little bit of a boost by getting Tarek Skubel back, but they really have a hard time scoring
14:26runs. Houston's got a lot of players on the injured list, Joe, but they do get Hunter Brown back. So
14:31that's good news for them, but it's kind of make or break time for both of these teams, Joe. They
14:35can't keep continuing this, uh, losing trend and falling behind. Although Houston has sort of, uh,
14:41held their heads above water a little bit and hanging in there. Yeah. And this is, uh, they're
14:47back home. They had a six game road trip here. Uh, Craig, the Astros did, I believe it started out
14:52at, uh, through Anaheim. Then it went to Kansas city. They lost yesterday for nothing. Uh, but now
14:59they're playing a game home. So first game off a road trip, I tend to look to maybe, uh, fade
15:06those
15:06teams there that get home and Detroit had a game scheduled yesterday, but that was rained out against
15:13the guardians. They had dropped the first two against them. And while they got a early plane ride
15:19home and got a little, uh, to Houston rather to get a little bit of rest here. I like Melton.
15:24I like
15:24the kid, uh, Tang is, you know, a converted reliever really that they're stretching out to make them a
15:30starter. I, I like Detroit here. I think at plus money, I trust them more so. And that's not saying
15:37a lot, Craig, but I trust them more than I trust Houston in this spot right now. Maybe the series
15:43of
15:43the week, Joe is in Los Angeles where the rays take on the Dodgers. You mentioned earlier in the show
15:48that the white socks ended up beating them two out of three. Chicago is one of those huge surprises
15:52in baseball this season, Tampa Bay off to that incredible start since really the end of May and
15:58into June, kind of been a 500 team, maybe a little bit better, a little bit worse, but the same
16:02could
16:02be said for the Dodgers. What do you make of this matchup tonight in LA? Generally, you're not going
16:08to get this kind of a percentage on LA, uh, in any game you're seeing 41% basically for both.
16:14I could certainly see, or 41% for the raise 59% for the Dodgers. Certainly it could be even
16:19more for LA.
16:20They're generally minus 200 on the betting lines every time that they play.
16:25You know, two organizations that have done wonders for pitchers, uh, you know, they're,
16:32they're coaching. And I mean, Martinez has been phenomenal for the raise here, right? Uh, coming
16:38off one of his worst seasons ever. And now he goes to the raise and all of a sudden now
16:42he's a legit
16:44starter and Lauer was kicked to the curb. He couldn't pitch in Toronto. It was hilariously bad.
16:49He comes to the Dodgers and look at this. All of a sudden now he's a mid rotation guy and
16:54very
16:54capable. So yeah, I, I tend to think though, uh, temperatures are going to be warm. I believe
17:00wind set to be blown out here. It says ravine tonight feels like runs against these two pitchers
17:06might be coming against these two, uh, bats, but I mean, only what four games separate them in the
17:12wind column here, Craig, did you have Tampa and the Dodgers almost on the same level?
17:17I certainly didn't on the bingo card at this point.
