00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For although Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied with
01:24anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead in the greatest of indignity, in the manner
01:59of a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to
02:06Herod and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:11Give me grace never, nor to be exasperated by slander, nor to be exasperated by slander, may I never feel
02:20any false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness, and endure all things in silence for
02:28your honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence.
02:53Give me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well pleasing to you, do not permit me to utter
03:00hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but give me grace to say what
03:07is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:13May I behold the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart, and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of
03:48this world.
03:49Pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name, and may come before you day by day in a
04:11true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:17Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who didn't refuse to be set to nothing by Herod and
04:24his men of war, nor to be clothed in a white garment and to be mocked and laughed at as
04:30though a fool and a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness, I may be as nothing in my
04:56own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment
05:12from Herod the Pilate, and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:37and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy. Amen.
05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O be joyful in the Lord, holy hands.
06:09O be joyful in the Lord, holy hands.
06:10Turn the Lord with gladness, and come upon His present pillow's home.
06:19Be sure that the Lord, He is God.
06:49CHOIR SINGS
07:22CHOIR SINGS
07:38CHOIR SINGS
07:39CHOIR SINGS
07:41World without end, Amen.
08:00The poor have stayed in his heart,
08:05There is no God, they are corrupt,
08:11And become a form in the world,
08:14In their doings.
08:17There is none that's true and no wood,
08:22Nor but one.
08:25The Lord looked down from heaven
08:28Upon the shielding of earth,
08:32To see if there were any that would understand,
08:38And speak of the God.
08:42But they are all gone out of the way,
08:46They are all together,
08:49They are the problem in the world,
08:53There is none that's true and no wood,
08:57No, not one.
09:01Their throat is an open sepulcher,
09:05With their tongues have made it seem,
09:10The poison of ass is under their lips,
09:17Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness,
09:22That feeds our sins to shed blood,
09:28Destruction and unhappiness is in their ways,
09:34And the way of peace have made us known,
09:39There is no fear of God before their eyes.
09:45And with the knowledge that they are born,
09:51Such a struggle of misty,
09:54Eating of my people as it's a bread,
09:59And corn was upon the road,
10:04There were they brought in great tears,
10:09Even when they were filled out,
10:13For God is in the generation of other angels.
10:22And as for you,
10:25He hath made a walk at the council of the poor,
10:31Because he puteth his trust in the Lord,
10:36Who shall give salvation unto Israel out of time,
10:44When the Lord shall let the captivity of his people,
10:51Then shall Jacob rejoice,
10:55And Israel shall begin.
11:04Glory be to the Father,
11:08And to the Son,
11:11And to the Holy Moose,
11:15As it was in the beginning,
11:19His love never shall be,
11:24And without end,
11:32Amen.
11:47The Gospel according to Saint Matthew, Chapter One.
11:53Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way.
11:58while his mother mary was engaged to joseph but before they came together she was found to be
12:04pregnant through the holy spirit because joseph her husband to be was a righteous man
12:11and because he did not want to disgrace her he intended to divorce her privately
12:20when he had contemplated this an angel of the lord appeared to him in a dream saying joseph son of
12:29david do not be afraid to take mary as your wife because the child conceived is from the holy spirit
12:39she will give birth to a son and you will name him jesus because he will save his people from
12:46their sins this all happened so that that which was spoken by the prophet would be fulfilled look
12:57the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will name him emmanuel which means god is
13:07with
13:07us when joseph awoke from sleep he did what the lord had told him he took his wife but he
13:16did
13:16not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son whom he named jesus
13:25this is the word of the lord thanks be to god
13:37there are five significant aspects for us to ponder upon in today's gospel reading
13:47first of all let us consider the distress of mary a young woman betrothed to joseph
13:56they had loved one another with a pure and holy love and now they were betrothed
14:04the tie of betrothal was in the eyes of the jews as sacred as that of marriage
14:11the bridegroom had not yet taken home his bride she still lived in her parents house
14:18they were looking forward to the coming nuptials it was the time upon which years afterwards men look
14:27back with such tender recollections the time when young love was budding in all its freshness and
14:34purity the time gilded by so many bright hopes of happiness to come a time especially blessed when both
14:45are living in the faith and love of god looking forward to a life together in that holy estate of
14:52matrimony
14:54which represents the mystic mystical union that exists between christ and church
15:03she was pregnant every rose has its thorn that bright happy time is often in x our ordinary experience
15:15clouded with times of difficulty and anxiety never would there be a greater trial for a betrothed pair
15:23than this which befell joseph and mary we may be sure they loved one another deeply and sincerely
15:38now there was a barrier between them it seemed impossible
15:45mary knew the secret but did she tell her betrothed
15:50it may be she considered it too sacred or too awful she could not tell even joseph
15:58she had received the angel's message in an implicit faith behold the handmaid of the lord
16:06she had said be it unto me according to your word
16:14so perhaps she kept a secret in her heart
16:18it was a strange mixture of awful joy and very bitter anguish
16:25those who are nearest to the lord are often called to drink of his cup and be baptized with his
16:31baptism
16:33so it was now with the blessed virgin
16:38she was to have that highest grace for which the jewish matrons longed so earnestly
16:46she was to be the mother of the christ
16:50but she had to undergo a trial most acutely painful a shame most terrible to a pure maiden soul
16:59she seemed unworthy of the love of him who loved her best whom she loved with the deep affection
17:06of that tender virgin heart she bore it in patience though her heart was breaking
17:16it was the agony which she had anticipated when she yielded herself in faith to the holy will of god
17:26perhaps she bore it in silence the mystery too deep too awful for words
17:34perhaps for we cannot tell she whispered it to joseph but it was too strange and too incredible
17:43he loved her and he trusted her there is no real love without mutual confidence
17:51but there can be limits to the trustfulness of the most loving heart
17:57but this story seemed altogether impossible joseph could not believe it his suspicions were natural
18:06excusable excusable but how cruelly they must have wounded the tender heart of mary
18:17the child was of the holy spirit the evangelist relates in few and simple words the greatest fact
18:25in world history the miracle surpassing all miracles
18:31miracles in the train of which lesser miracles must of necessity follow the incarnation is a truth above
18:40words above the reach of human thought it calls upon us not for rhetorical description but for adoration and thanksgiving
18:53the spirit of god had moved upon the face of the waters
18:57in the day when god created the heavens and earth now in the beginning of his new creation the holy
19:04spirit
19:05had come and moved upon the blessed virgin the power of the highest had overshadowed her
19:12she was highly favored indeed blessed above all other women chosen to be the mother of the lord
19:21very pure and holy she must have been it may well be the holiest of women as she was the
19:29most highly favored
19:31but she was a creature born in sin like ourselves needing like ourselves to be cleansed by the atoning blood
19:38the foreign divine son and now the unique grace and dignity vouchsafed unto her brought with it a season of
19:49heart-rending anguish
19:54so let us consider the situation from joseph's point of view
20:01we believe from what we know he was a just man he too was sorely tried
20:09he had tenderly loved his betrothed he loved her still he was in a position of the greatest perplexity
20:20mary was conscious of her innocence the angel had announced to her the cause of her immaculate conception
20:30joseph had at the very most only her word to trust in
20:35appearances were against her her statement if she told him at all required a very high degree of unquestioning trustful
20:45faith
20:48but joseph was a just man he could not do her wrong he could not wholly believe perhaps he did
20:57not wholly disbelieve
21:00we may be quite sure he was distracted with anxiety he was a just man wanting to do the right
21:08thing
21:09but he was in a great deal of difficulty causing him long and anxious thought
21:17what were his intentions
21:20he had decided to adopt a middle course he would not expose his betrothed because he still loved her
21:29his justice was not the strict stern justice which considered only the letter of the law
21:36it was tempered in the gentler feelings mercy and compassion
21:44he could not bring the one whom he had loved so dearly into the danger of shame and death
21:53but under the circumstances so suspicious he could not consummate the marriage
22:01and he was minded to put her away
22:10but as joseph thought upon these things we may be sure that he prayed
22:16it was misery to him to mistrust his betrothed
22:19it was misery to be doubtful about the right path to be pursued
22:24in a case of such momentous importance to them both
22:30a holy man like joseph who prayed always would pray most earnestly most importunately under
22:37circumstances so distressing at last the answer came
22:44god will not leave his servants perplexed he will clear away their doubts he will teach them what they
22:51ought to do but trust in god does not remove the duty of thoughtfulness
22:58we must think as joseph thought seriously and with prayer when difficult questions present themselves
23:06if we do this god will not suffer us to be led astray he will guide us in the right
23:12path
23:16and so we come to the angel the word as we have seen before means messenger the blessed angels are
23:25god's
23:25messengers they are sent forth to minister for them who shall be the heirs of salvation
23:34they help us now for they encamp around those who fear the lord
23:40they bring god's messages of love to us now as they did to joseph they guide us now as they
23:47guided him
23:48the angel appeared to him in a dream and so they often whisper now the intimations of god's holy will
23:56in the hour of quiet in the silence of the night
24:05the message the angel brought calmed the fears of joseph it removed his doubts it enabled him to rejoice
24:13once more in the love of his dear betrothed there was nothing to separate her from him
24:22ty was to take her her words as if she had told him strange and mysterious as they were were
24:29strictly true
24:33that which was conceived in her was of the holy spirit he should bring forth the son a son who
24:40should
24:40be the savior of the world not joseph's son but entrusted for a time to his care mary was to
24:49be the
24:49mother of the lord the highest honor ever vouchsafed to a child of adam joseph was to have the great
24:58joy of
24:59watching over his infancy and youth surely no charge so high and holy had ever been entrusted even to the
25:08blessed angels
25:15the prayer of a righteous man avails much with god and joseph was a righteous man
25:29he had thought and had prayed god will answer us he will guide us in our perplexity
25:36he had thought and he will show us his path of duty if like joseph we try to live a
25:44holy life
25:46if we think seriously if we pray seriously
25:54the fourth element is the prophecy
25:58a prophecy of the lord must be fulfilled for it was spoken of the lord holy men of god spoke
26:05as
26:05they were moved by the holy spirit isaiah is often called the evangelical prophet in his prophecy we have
26:14the foreshadowing of the gospel the good tidings of salvation his very name points to the savior
26:22jesus it is jesus with the elements reversed it means the salvation of jehovah
26:31the prophecy was given through him but he was not the author of it it came from god
26:42but god had spoken it and he would make it good he had announced his will long ago
26:49and at length the time was come now all this is come to pass the angel said
26:55for the words are part of the message that it might be fulfilled
27:01all this had come to pass that human nature might be cleansed by its union with the divine nature
27:06in the person of christ that great result was the end contemplated by the prophecy
27:15to fulfill the prophecy and to save the souls of men was the same doing it was an end worthy
27:24of a divine
27:24intervention worthy of an angelic messenger all this the enunciation the miraculous conception all this
27:33is to come to pass that his gracious purpose announced so long before would be fulfilled
27:45then we have the substance of the prophecy the hebrew words in the prophecy mean quite literally
27:54the virgin is with child and bears a son
27:59the prophet spoke of one virgin one illustrious and unique as saint john chrysostom says
28:05the terms of the prophecy can be satisfied only by a miraculous conception at a supernatural birth
28:15it is the sign which the lord himself shall give the sign of the messiah the sign of deliverance from
28:22sin
28:23and death that marvelous birth foretold so solemnly in such strange startling language was to be the
28:32beginning of the kingdom of heaven the kingdom of god on earth for the virgin born is the king the
28:41king who
28:41must reign till all his enemies are put under his feet he is god with us immanuel he has taken
28:50upon him
28:51the form of servant he is made in the likeness of man he was from all eternity in the form
28:59of god
29:00living in the glory which he had with the father before the world was
29:05now he is immanuel god with us the word incarnate the word was made flesh and dwelt among us
29:16he has taken upon him our human nature that by the mysterious union of the human and divine in the
29:25one
29:25person of christ our human nature might be cleansed from the dark stain of sin
29:31and be created anew after the image of god god is with us with us to redeem to cleanse to
29:40regenerate to
29:41sanctify he abides in us if we are truly his he in us and we in him
29:50he is with us always even to the end of the world ready to hear our prayer ready to help
29:57us ready to save us
29:59even to the uttermost for through the wondrous miracle of the incarnation he is ours and we are his if
30:09we
30:09we abide in his love
30:14and finally we consider the holy name of jesus
30:25all his doubts were dispelled anguish gone joseph was filled with a strange and awful joy
30:35for his beloved was to be the mother of the messiah
30:39he was to care for her to watch over the infancy of god's holy child
30:47he took unto him his wife he respected her spotless purity he lived with her in reverential awe
30:57and at the last the beloved and promised child was born
31:04we can imagine joseph looking down upon the heavenly face of that blessed baby
31:11there is something very sweet in the calm face of an innocent infant
31:17what depth of celestial beauty must there have been in the smile of the infant jesus
31:25what a treasure of unspeakable joy must that holy child have been to mary and joseph
31:34he called his name jesus in obedience to the angels bidding
31:50many had born that name before it is the greek form of the common hebrew name joshua
32:00the first joshua of whom we read was originally called or share or share this name which was also the
32:09last
32:10the name of the last king of israel and the first in order of the minor prophets means salvation
32:18moses added to it the sacred name and called the son of nun jehoshua or joshua the salvation of jehovah
32:29he fulfilled the prophecy contained in his name he was steadfast in his unswerving allegiance to jehovah
32:38as for me in my house he said we will serve the lord
32:44he was the lord's instrument in saving the people of israel from the hands of their enemies
32:52he led them through the river jordan he fought their battles for them he gave them rest in the promised
32:57land in all this he was an eminent type of our lord who is the captain of our salvation who
33:06fought
33:06out the fearful conflict for us against the deadly enemy who leads his people through the river of death
33:12into everlasting rest the name of their great leader naturally became common amongst the jews
33:22it appears again and again under its various forms
33:26asher hoshua joshua joshua joshua jesus
33:35but only the son of god fulfilled in full its blessed meaning for he indeed was the son and salvation
33:44of jehovah
33:46come in his infinite infinite tenderness in his divine compassion to save his people
33:54he shall save his people from their sins the angel said this was the meaning the translation of the name
34:03he himself shall save his people the greek word means himself by his own power
34:11the first joshua saved israel by the help of god
34:16the second joshua is himself god therefore he himself is able even to save the uttermost all who
34:25come unto god by him he shall save his people he came to redeem us from all iniquity and purify
34:33unto himself
34:34a peculiar people zealous of good works
34:39he has a people his own people for he is a king and his people are a kingdom of priests
34:46a holy nation
34:48they belong to him they are his bought with a price they are not priests a holy nation
34:59all christians are his by solemn dedication to his service in holy baptism
35:06but in the deepest sense they are only his people in whom the promise is fulfilled whom he is saving
35:13from their sins
35:16alas there are some of whom it is written call his name lo amy for you are not my people
35:25and i will not be your god
35:31his salvation is present he saves his people from their sins not only from the punishment of sin but from
35:39the very
35:40sin itself his precious blood once shed upon the cross cleanses all who believe in him from the defilement of
35:49sin
35:50his gracious presence abiding in the heart through the indwelling of his spirit saves his people from the dominion of
35:59sin
36:00the sting of death is sin but god giveth victory through our lord jesus christ
36:08this is the plain teaching of the holy scripture then if we are his sin must lose its power over
36:15us
36:15for his blood is cleansing from all sin those who walk in the light of his presence and he is
36:21saving them
36:22from the power of sin we must try to realize in our own experience this victory over sin
36:31most people seem to be content with a life that falls very short of anything that can be called
36:38a minor victory but this is what god promises to give us not only a minor victory but the ultimate
36:46victory the lord jesus came to save his people from their sins the purpose of his coming is not fulfilled
36:55in us unless we are saved from them and he will save us he himself will save us if we
37:05trust his word and come to him in faith
37:13it is in the future it is everlasting joshua led the children of israel into canaan jesus leads his people
37:22into heaven
37:24he has prepared a place for us there and now is preparing us for it without holiness no man can
37:34see
37:34the lord but he of god is made unto us sanctification he makes his people holy by the gift of
37:43his spirit
37:44he takes away the sting of death which is sin and changes death into sleep blessed are the dead which
37:53die
37:53in the lord for if they die in him in spiritual union with him he is their jesus their savior
38:00the blessed
38:01meaning of the holy name is realized in their experience and refreshes their soul in death with its heavenly music
38:13so what might we take away from today's reading firstly god's holiest saints like saint joseph
38:23are often sorely tried but we must be patient trust always secondly god hears our prayers he will bring the
38:35afflictions of his people to happy issue thirdly the holy name is exceedingly precious and sacred pronounce it with
38:47reverence treasure it in your heart do everything that you do in the name of the lord jesus
38:57and finally the biggest thought of all to take away today he shall save his people from their sins
39:08are you his is he saving you from yours
39:18let us pray almighty and everlasting god who has given us your servants grace by the confession of a
39:27true faith to acknowledge the glory of the eternal trinity in the power of your divine majesty to worship
39:35the unity we beseech you that you keep us steadfast in this faith and evermore defend us from all adversities
39:45who lives and reigns one god world without end amen
39:56may the lord bless us and keep us from all evil bringing us to everlasting life amen
