00:00:11Let us pray
00:00:14Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:00:17Who, when you were given up to the will of your persecutors
00:00:21Suffered many torments when they took off the purple room
00:00:25Which was stuck to your wounds and put upon you your own clothes
00:00:31Grant that after I have put off the clothing of this body
00:00:34I may be clad with the robe of perfect charity
00:00:37And that I may be adorned with your merit
00:00:41And through your mercy be introduced as an adopted son
00:00:45Into the heavenly inheritance
00:00:49Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:00:52Who in the midst of reproach and injury
00:00:55Bore your cross with excessive pain
00:00:57On your sacred and cut shoulders
00:01:01Wearied and panting for breath
00:01:03You toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight
00:01:07Give me grace to take hold of the cross of self-denial
00:01:10With ardent devotion
00:01:11And to imitate with the most fervent of charity
00:01:15The example of your virtues
00:01:17And to follow you in humility even unto death
00:01:23Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:01:27Who, when you were led from the city with two thieves
00:01:30Did not refuse to be pressed upon and thrust
00:01:33Hastened and to be afflicted in many ways
00:01:37Draw me after you
00:01:38That I may quickly follow
00:01:41Grant that for your sake
00:01:42I may entirely deny, forsake
00:01:45And go out of myself
00:01:47Give me grace to think of you alone
00:01:49And to find no joy
00:01:50Except in you, my Redeemer
00:01:55Grant that I may love you alone
00:01:57And may return love for love
00:01:59May I earnestly seek after you
00:02:02And live to you alone
00:02:06Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:02:09Who, when bowed down by the weight of your cross
00:02:12At length reached the place of punishment
00:02:15Where, quite exhausted
00:02:18They offered you wine mingled with gall
00:02:22May you extinguish in me
00:02:24All gluttonous and carnal desire
00:02:26Giving me grace never to consent
00:02:29To any impure or unlawful pleasure
00:02:33But may I take my food in moderation
00:02:35To the glory of your name
00:02:37And may hunger and thirst after you alone
00:02:40And find no pleasure or gladness
00:02:42Except in you
00:02:46Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:02:49Who was stripped before the gaze of all people
00:02:52On Mount Calvary
00:02:53And the soreness of your wounds being increased
00:02:56By the removal of your clothing
00:02:59You did not refuse to undergo for my sake
00:03:02The most dreadful pain
00:03:05Grant that I may love the spirit of poverty
00:03:08And never be disturbed by want or scarcity
00:03:12Give me grace to bear patiently
00:03:14Any difficulties or troubles in this life
00:03:17For the glory of your name
00:03:20Strip my heart of every vain fancy and affection
00:03:24And grant me a holy intent
00:03:26With pious desires
00:03:29Renewing within me daily
00:03:30A most pure love for yourself
00:03:34Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:03:37Who gave himself up to be extended
00:03:39Naked upon the wood of the cross
00:03:42And the joints of your most holy limbs
00:03:44To be wrenched apart
00:03:46Most cruelly nailed and fastened thereto
00:03:51Then for my sake
00:03:52You suffered your most delicate hands and feet
00:03:56To be most deeply wounded
00:03:58Grant, O Lord
00:04:00That I might remember
00:04:02With a faithful and grateful heart
00:04:04This your unspeakable charity
00:04:07When you did of your own accord
00:04:10Stretch out your hands to be bored
00:04:11And your feet to be pierced through
00:04:15O Lord
00:04:16Enlarge and extend my heart
00:04:17By perfect love of you
00:04:20Pierce it and fix it to yourself
00:04:22With the nail of your sweetest love
00:04:24And shut up within yourself alone
00:04:27All my senses
00:04:27All my thoughts
00:04:29And all my affections
00:04:31Amen
00:04:36O Lord
00:04:37Open our lips
00:04:38And our mouths shall sing your praise
00:04:48O be joyful in the Lord
00:04:51O be joyful in the Lord
00:04:53O be glad
00:04:54Turn the Lord with gladness
00:04:57And come in voice
00:05:00Where the heavens will atong
00:05:04He is torn as the Lord
00:05:08He is torn
00:05:10He is torn
00:05:11He is recieved
00:05:12He has made us
00:05:14And lost we ourselves
00:05:15We are his people
00:05:19And the sheep of his pasture
00:05:22Who put your way
00:05:26Into his sacred past tree
00:05:28And into his constant place
00:05:33Be thankful
00:05:36Be thankful
00:05:37To him
00:05:38And speak
00:05:39To the Lord
00:05:41His name
00:05:42O the Lord
00:05:45Is gracious
00:05:46His mercy
00:05:49Is everlasting
00:05:52And his truth
00:05:55Endure
00:05:56From generation
00:05:58To generation
00:06:01To generation
00:06:06Glory be to the Father
00:06:09And to the Son
00:06:12And to the Holy Ghost
00:06:17As it was in the beginning
00:06:20His love
00:06:23And ever shall be
00:06:26World without the end
00:06:34Amen
00:06:44O God, my heart is ready
00:06:48My heart is ready
00:06:51My heart is ready
00:06:53My heart is ready
00:06:53I will seek and be prayed
00:06:55To be the best member

00:07:15Unto thee, O Lord
00:07:17Among the people
00:07:19I will sing great
00:07:22Unto thee, among the nations
00:07:27For thy mercy is greater
00:07:31Than the heavens
00:07:33And I too reach ever
00:07:37To the clouds
00:07:39Set up thy self
00:07:42O God
00:07:44Above the heavens
00:07:46And thy glory
00:07:49Above all the earth
00:07:52That thy beloved
00:07:55May be given
00:07:58Let thy light

00:08:03And without me
00:08:08God has spoken
00:08:10God has spoken
00:08:11In his holiness
00:08:13I will rejoice
00:08:16Therefore
00:08:17And in my silence
00:08:19And lead us
00:08:22The valley of sorrow
00:08:26In the earth is mine

00:10:14CHOIR SINGS
00:10:32CHOIR SINGS
00:10:46The Epistle to the Hebrews
00:10:49Chapter 12
00:10:53Therefore, since we are surrendered by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and
00:10:59the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us,
00:11:05keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him,
00:11:14he has endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne
00:11:21of God.
00:11:23Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your
00:11:30souls and give up.
00:11:33You have not yet resisted to the point of bloodshed in your struggle against sin. Have you forgotten the exhortation
00:11:41addressed to you as sons?
00:11:44My son, do not scorn the Lord's discipline or give up whenever he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines the
00:11:51one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.
00:11:56So endure your suffering as discipline. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that the father
00:12:05does not discipline?
00:12:07But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons share in, then you are surely illegitimate and are not
00:12:17true sons.
00:12:19Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and respected them.
00:12:26Shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the father of spirits and receive life?
00:12:32For they disciplined us for a little while, as seemed good to them.
00:12:36But he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness.
00:12:42All discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful.
00:12:46But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it.
00:12:52Therefore strengthen your listless hands and your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet,
00:12:58so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but healed.
00:13:04Pursue peace with everyone and holiness, for without it no one will see the Lord.
00:13:11See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God,
00:13:14that no one be like a bit of root springing up and causing trouble,
00:13:18and through it many become defiled.
00:13:22See to it that no one becomes immoral or a godless person like Esau,
00:13:27who sold his own birthright for a single meal.
00:13:31For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected,
00:13:36for he found no opportunity for repentance,
00:13:39although he sought the blessing with tears.
00:13:44For you have not come to something that can be touched,
00:13:47to a burning fire, darkness, and a gloom or whirlwind,
00:13:51the blast of a trumpet, and the voice uttering words,
00:13:54such as those who heard begged to hear no more.
00:13:58For they could not bear what was commanded.
00:14:02Even if an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.
00:14:07In fact, the scene was so terrifying that Moses said,
00:14:11I shudder with fear.
00:14:14But you have come to Mount Zion,
00:14:16the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
00:14:19and to myriads of angels,
00:14:21to the assembly and congregation of the firstborn,
00:14:25who are enrolled in heaven,
00:14:27and to God, the judge of all,
00:14:29and to all the spirits of the righteous,
00:14:31who have been made perfect,
00:14:33and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,
00:14:37to the sprinkled blood that speaks of something better than Abel's does.
00:14:43Take care not to refuse the one who is speaking,
00:14:46for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth,
00:14:51how much less shall we if we reject the one who warns us from heaven?
00:14:57Then his voice shook the earth,
00:14:59but now he has promised,
00:15:00I will once more shake not only the earth,
00:15:04but heaven too.
00:15:07Now this phrase, once more,
00:15:09indicates the removal of what is shaken,
00:15:12that is, of created things,
00:15:14so that what is unshaken may remain.
00:15:18So since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,
00:15:22let us give thanks,
00:15:23and through this,
00:15:25let us offer worship pleasing to God,
00:15:27in devotion and awe,
00:15:29for our God is indeed a devouring fire.
00:15:35This is the word of the Lord.
00:15:38Thanks be to God.
00:15:45The words of verse 1,
00:15:47today's reading,
00:15:49Wherefore seeing we are also compassed about,
00:15:52with so great a cloud of witnesses.
00:15:57What this does not mean,
00:15:59is that the Old Testament saints,
00:16:01which have been spoken of in the previous chapter,
00:16:05are sitting there in heaven,
00:16:06watching the activities on the earth.
00:16:09It doesn't mean that they are just watching us,
00:16:11to see how we are going to react and respond.
00:16:14And we've got this big gallery up here,
00:16:17of Old Testament saints.
00:16:18What it does mean,
00:16:21is that their life of faith,
00:16:23and the accomplishments through faith,
00:16:25are a witness to us,
00:16:27of what faith can do,
00:16:28when we exercise faith in our own lives.
00:16:31Their lives bear witness to us,
00:16:34of the value of walking with God.
00:16:36And seeing that their lives,
00:16:38are such a witness to us,
00:16:40in the words of verse 2,
00:16:42let us run with patience,
00:16:43the race that is set before us,
00:16:45as we look to Jesus.
00:16:49So their lives become an example to us,
00:16:52of the life of faith.
00:16:54But we look from them,
00:16:56to the greatest example of all,
00:16:58that is of Jesus Christ.
00:17:01We are encompassed,
00:17:02with this great cloud of witnesses,
00:17:05that bear witness to us,
00:17:06of the living God.
00:17:08Living a life of faith,
00:17:10and commitment to God.
00:17:13Thy fear is likened to a race,
00:17:16as it is in many places,
00:17:17in the New Testament.
00:17:20In 2 Timothy 4.7,
00:17:22St. Paul says,
00:17:24I have fought a good fight,
00:17:25I have finished my course,
00:17:27I have kept the faith.
00:17:30The race course,
00:17:31I have completed it.
00:17:33He said,
00:17:34They who run in the race,
00:17:36run all.
00:17:37Only one receives the prize,
00:17:40so run,
00:17:40that you might obtain.
00:17:43Give all you've got,
00:17:44to this race.
00:17:45Go all out.
00:17:49Seeing we're encompassed about,
00:17:50with this great cloud of witnesses,
00:17:53let us run with patience,
00:17:54the race,
00:17:55that is set before us,
00:17:56as we are looking unto Jesus.
00:18:00The word look,
00:18:01in Greek,
00:18:02is an interesting word.
00:18:04There are several Greek words,
00:18:06translated as,
00:18:07to look.
00:18:09One is to glance,
00:18:10one is to study,
00:18:12and one is to look,
00:18:13and to contemplate.
00:18:15This particular Greek word,
00:18:17is used only here,
00:18:18in the New Testament.
00:18:21It isn't used anywhere else.
00:18:24The word means literally,
00:18:26to stare,
00:18:27with a sort of awe,
00:18:28and admiration.
00:18:30So we're being asked,
00:18:31to stare at Jesus.
00:18:33Just that.
00:18:34As we see the fullness,
00:18:35of God's glory,
00:18:36shown in him.
00:18:38He is the author,
00:18:39and the completion,
00:18:41of our faith.
00:18:44God has given,
00:18:45to every man,
00:18:46a message of faith.
00:18:48The faith,
00:18:49that I have in my heart,
00:18:50is a gift,
00:18:51of God.
00:18:52St. Paul,
00:18:53in Ephesians 2.8,
00:18:54said,
00:18:55By grace,
00:18:56are you saved,
00:18:57through faith,
00:18:58and that not,
00:18:59of yourself.
00:18:59It is a gift of God,
00:19:01not of works,
00:19:02lest any man,
00:19:03should boast.
00:19:05Our salvation,
00:19:06the faith,
00:19:07by which I believe,
00:19:09is God's gift.
00:19:12In 1 Corinthians 12,
00:19:14St. Paul lists faith,
00:19:16as one of the great gifts,
00:19:17of the Spirit.
00:19:20Jesus is the author,
00:19:22of our faith.
00:19:24He is the one,
00:19:25who planted faith,
00:19:26in our hearts.
00:19:27He is also,
00:19:29the completion.
00:19:31Philippians 1.6,
00:19:34He which has begun,
00:19:36a good work in you,
00:19:36shall continue,
00:19:37to perform it.
00:19:39I am persuaded,
00:19:41that God will perfect,
00:19:42that which concerns us.
00:19:44And so,
00:19:44having begun,
00:19:45he continues his work,
00:19:46in our lives.
00:19:47He is the author,
00:19:48the finisher,
00:19:48the beginning,
00:19:49and the end.
00:19:50He said,
00:19:51I am,
00:19:52the Alpha,
00:19:52and the Omega,
00:19:53the beginning,
00:19:54and the end.
00:19:56That is true,
00:19:57of creation,
00:19:58but it is also,
00:19:59true,
00:20:00of God's new creation,
00:20:01in us.
00:20:02He is the author,
00:20:03of it.
00:20:03He is the finisher,
00:20:05of it.
00:20:05He is the author,
00:20:06and the finisher,
00:20:07of our faith.
00:20:10In verse 2,
00:20:11we read,
00:20:12looking to him,
00:20:13the author,
00:20:13and finisher,
00:20:14of our faith,
00:20:16who for the joy,
00:20:17that was said before him,
00:20:18endured the cross.
00:20:22John 16.33,
00:20:24tells us,
00:20:25Jesus is our example,
00:20:26as we run the race.
00:20:27There are going to be
00:20:29hardships along the way,
00:20:30for God does not promise us
00:20:32an easy life.
00:20:34In this world,
00:20:35Jesus said,
00:20:36you will have tribulation,
00:20:37but be of good cheer.
00:20:39I have overcome the world.
00:20:44Having described the characteristics
00:20:46of the Christian
00:20:47in the Sermon on the Mount,
00:20:49Jesus went on,
00:20:51in Matthew 5.11,
00:20:52to say,
00:20:54blessed are you,
00:20:55when men shall revile you,
00:20:57and persecute you,
00:20:58and say all manner of evil,
00:21:00against you,
00:21:01falsely.
00:21:03Who?
00:21:04The peacemakers,
00:21:06the merciful,
00:21:07the good people.
00:21:11Life is never going to be easy,
00:21:13as a Christian,
00:21:14because you are an alien,
00:21:16in this world.
00:21:18When you walk with Jesus Christ,
00:21:20you are out of step,
00:21:21with the world,
00:21:22and the world does not like that.
00:21:24You are a threat,
00:21:25to them.
00:21:26You cause them,
00:21:27to feel guilty,
00:21:28and they don't like that.
00:21:30They like to go ahead,
00:21:31and just be filthy,
00:21:32and dirty,
00:21:33without having to be concerned,
00:21:35with the fact that,
00:21:36I am dirty.
00:21:38They are offended,
00:21:39because you don't like,
00:21:40their dirty stories.
00:21:42It sort of cuts them,
00:21:44when you say,
00:21:45that is disgusting,
00:21:46instead of laughing hilariously.
00:21:49They don't like it,
00:21:51and their response,
00:21:52is that of striking out,
00:21:53and persecuting.
00:21:55Blessed are you,
00:21:56when men shall revile you.
00:21:59Christ is our example,
00:22:00and look what they did to him.
00:22:03But who for the joy,
00:22:04that was set before him,
00:22:06etc.
00:22:08In running the race,
00:22:10the prize of winning,
00:22:11is the incentive,
00:22:12the glory that comes,
00:22:14to the victor,
00:22:14the joy of victory.
00:22:16In Christ's case,
00:22:18it was the joy,
00:22:19of being able,
00:22:20to bring us victory,
00:22:21over sin,
00:22:22freedom from sin,
00:22:22forgiveness of sin,
00:22:24the joy of being able,
00:22:25to redeem us,
00:22:26from our lost condition.
00:22:28Who for the joy,
00:22:29that was set before him.
00:22:31And with Christ also,
00:22:32the joy of just doing,
00:22:34the will of God.
00:22:36For he said,
00:22:37I delight to do your will,
00:22:39O God.
00:22:40Psalm 48.
00:22:43The joy of knowing,
00:22:45I am doing what God wants me to do.
00:22:47Do you have that joy in your life?
00:22:50Do you know that you are doing,
00:22:51what God wants you to do?
00:22:53There is a tremendous joy in that,
00:22:55just knowing,
00:22:56I am doing what God wants me to do.
00:22:59My life is in harmony,
00:23:01with the internal plan of God.
00:23:03For the joy that was set before him,
00:23:05he endured the cross.
00:23:10I think that sometimes,
00:23:12we are prone to think,
00:23:13that the cross was just a sort of duty,
00:23:15that Jesus accepted.
00:23:17And that he just sort of thought,
00:23:19it's all part of life.
00:23:22No,
00:23:23he despised the shame of the thing.
00:23:26He endured it,
00:23:27despising the shame,
00:23:29verse 2 tells us.
00:23:31In fact,
00:23:32it was truly loathsome to him.
00:23:36You will no doubt remember,
00:23:38that in the garden,
00:23:39he was praying,
00:23:40that God,
00:23:41if possible,
00:23:42would take an alternate course.
00:23:45Matthew 26,
00:23:4639,
00:23:47records
00:23:49his prayer.
00:23:50Father,
00:23:51if it is possible,
00:23:53let this cup pass from them.
00:23:56Nonetheless,
00:23:56not what I will,
00:23:57but your will,
00:23:58be done.
00:24:02If you are not,
00:24:02you will be done.
00:24:03by being religious,
00:24:04by being good,
00:24:05by being sincere,
00:24:06by being anything,
00:24:08let this cup pass from them.
00:24:11But Jesus drank the cup.
00:24:13He endured the cross,
00:24:14even though he despised the shame of it.
00:24:17And verse 2 tells us,
00:24:19now he is sat at the right hand of the throne of God.
00:24:24Having triumphed,
00:24:26he now sits there in eternal glory.
00:24:29Verse 3 continues,
00:24:31For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself.
00:24:38This contradiction of sinners,
00:24:40here is a man whose life was marked by love,
00:24:44goodness,
00:24:44and good deeds.
00:24:46One time,
00:24:48when they took up stones to kill him,
00:24:50he said,
00:24:51I have done a lot of good things.
00:24:53I have healed the blind,
00:24:55I have caused the lame to walk,
00:24:57I have restored the life to the dead.
00:25:00For which of these things are you going to stone me now?
00:25:03John 10,
00:25:0432
00:25:08We are not stoning you for that,
00:25:10but because you,
00:25:11being a man,
00:25:12are constantly saying you are the Son of God.
00:25:17He went around doing good,
00:25:19and yet the most evil deed ever was perpetrated against him,
00:25:22when they crucified him on the cross.
00:25:26Here was truly a man who did nothing but extreme good,
00:25:30being the victim of one of the foulest deeds ever committed.
00:25:34Here a man who proclaimed and taught love,
00:25:37as the most supreme value of life,
00:25:40and then demonstrated that love,
00:25:42by being killed in the most hateful way,
00:25:45receiving the venom,
00:25:47the most evil of mankind.
00:25:50Such was the contradiction of sinners against himself.
00:25:55In other words,
00:25:56as we run our race,
00:25:58and we face the difficulties,
00:26:00sometimes we are prone to get weary.
00:26:03The obstacles,
00:26:05the hurdles,
00:26:05as we are doing this cross-country run,
00:26:08we are prone to get weary of life,
00:26:11in persecution,
00:26:12because we have been good,
00:26:14taking it constantly on the other cheek,
00:26:17and I won't strike back.
00:26:18Consider him the contradiction against the sinners that he experienced.
00:26:25Verse 3 and 4 continue.
00:26:29For which one of you have actually resisted unto the blood,
00:26:33as if you were striving against sin?
00:26:37Here was Jesus striving against sin,
00:26:40and he resisted unto the shedding of his blood.
00:26:44But you don't have it anything like that bad.
00:26:49Not one of us have been martyred for our faith in Christ Jesus.
00:26:54We may receive verbal abuse,
00:26:57and we may receive actual physical abuse.
00:27:01It could be that you have family that don't understand you,
00:27:04and you have experienced physical abuse,
00:27:06but so little compared to what Jesus endured.
00:27:12And now he changes the subject,
00:27:14and deals with the subject of God's correcting procedures with his children.
00:27:19Our Father is a loving God, we read,
00:27:21and he loves us so much that he corrects us when we do wrong.
00:27:26I want you to notice
00:27:27that God's work in our lives is not that of punishment.
00:27:31And I think that in dealing with our children and in their mistakes,
00:27:35they understand that we are not punishing them,
00:27:37but we are seeking to correct them.
00:27:41God's dealing with us is dealing with us for correction,
00:27:45and correction is for our good and our benefit.
00:27:51I think so often we picture God in the wrong position,
00:27:55in the wrong posture.
00:27:57And I think perhaps this is a reversion
00:27:59to our images from Sunday school,
00:28:03that the Sunday school teacher used to keep us in line,
00:28:07warning us about God.
00:28:09If you're bad, God is watching you.
00:28:11God doesn't like you to be bad.
00:28:14Well, it is true.
00:28:15He doesn't like us to be bad,
00:28:17but he does like us.
00:28:19He doesn't like our badness,
00:28:21but he likes us.
00:28:23Like a grandchild,
00:28:25he comes home and says,
00:28:28Daddy, is God watching me?
00:28:31He said, why do you ask that?
00:28:33Sunday school teacher told me.
00:28:36Why did your Sunday school teacher tell you that?
00:28:40Because I was bad.
00:28:42But is it true?
00:28:43Is God watching me?
00:28:46Yep, it's true.
00:28:48God is watching you.
00:28:49Because he loves you so much,
00:28:51he cannot take his eyes off you.
00:28:57It is true that God watches us constantly,
00:29:00not as a policeman waiting to put handcuffs on us
00:29:03the moment we do something wrong
00:29:05and throw us into prison.
00:29:08But watching us as a loving father
00:29:10so concerned with his child,
00:29:11he cannot take his eyes off you.
00:29:17Have you ever had that kind of experience?
00:29:20Think of our little children
00:29:22or our grandchildren,
00:29:24how they come over
00:29:25and we watch them constantly.
00:29:27We simply cannot take our eyes off them.
00:29:30Everything they do is just so beautiful.
00:29:32It's amazing,
00:29:34even their little spells of naughtiness.
00:29:36And turn to each other
00:29:38and we will say,
00:29:39isn't that cute?
00:29:40Look at that.
00:29:40They're having a brainstorm.
00:29:44Goodness,
00:29:45things for which we really whacked our own kids.
00:29:48They're cute now
00:29:49as our kids get older.
00:29:51Don't we spoil them?
00:29:53God spoils us too,
00:29:55but he loves us.
00:29:56But he loves us enough
00:29:58that he does correct us
00:30:00when it is necessary.
00:30:04Verses 5 to 8.
00:30:06Have you forgotten the exhortation
00:30:09which speaks to you
00:30:10as to children?
00:30:12My son,
00:30:15despise you not
00:30:16the chastening of the Lord.
00:30:17Do not faint
00:30:18when you are rebuked by him.
00:30:20For whom the God loves,
00:30:23he chastens
00:30:24and scourges every son
00:30:25whom he receives.
00:30:27If you endure chastening,
00:30:29God is dealing with you as a son.
00:30:31For what son is he
00:30:33whom the Father does not chasten?
00:30:36If you are without chastisement,
00:30:38of which we are all partakers,
00:30:41then you are actually
00:30:42not a legitimate son.
00:30:46So don't despise
00:30:48the chastening of the Lord.
00:30:50It is proof
00:30:51that God loves you.
00:30:52It is proof
00:30:53that you are his son.
00:30:57If you can do evil
00:30:58and get away with it,
00:31:00you must be very concerned.
00:31:03If you have been cheating
00:31:04over a long period of time
00:31:05and you have been
00:31:06getting away with it,
00:31:07if you have been having
00:31:08a false relationship
00:31:09for a long time
00:31:10and you are getting by with it,
00:31:12look out.
00:31:13That is a good indication
00:31:15that you are not a son.
00:31:17You are putting yourself
00:31:18in a most dangerous place.
00:31:20If you can sin
00:31:21with impunity
00:31:22without guessing God.
00:31:24But you know
00:31:25the neat thing about God
00:31:27is that he loves us so much.
00:31:28He is going to make sure
00:31:30we get caught.
00:31:31And that is sometimes
00:31:33a cause of great consternation
00:31:35in the mind of a Christian.
00:31:38Because everybody on the job
00:31:39may be cheating a little bit
00:31:40on their time card.
00:31:42And so because everyone
00:31:43is doing it,
00:31:44I am tempted to cheat
00:31:45on mine.
00:31:47And so because everybody
00:31:48does it,
00:31:50wham,
00:31:51I get zapped.
00:31:52But they all did it
00:31:54and none of them
00:31:54got caught.
00:31:55True,
00:31:56but they are not sons.
00:31:58God will not let you
00:31:59get by with it
00:32:00because you are a son.
00:32:02God will see to it
00:32:03you get caught.
00:32:06But that is not fair.
00:32:08Well,
00:32:09it is really.
00:32:10God will not let you
00:32:12get by with sin.
00:32:13God will not let you
00:32:14get by with evil
00:32:15because you are his son.
00:32:17Even though everybody
00:32:18else might get by,
00:32:20you will not.
00:32:21So when you are caught,
00:32:23rejoice and say,
00:32:24he doesn't let me
00:32:25get away with evil
00:32:27and it's proof
00:32:28that I am his son.
00:32:30If we endure chastening,
00:32:32God deals with us
00:32:33as sons.
00:32:34If you are without
00:32:36chastisement,
00:32:37if you get away
00:32:38with sin,
00:32:39then you are truly
00:32:40not a son.
00:32:43Verses 9 and 10.
00:32:45Tell us,
00:32:46furthermore,
00:32:47we have had fathers
00:32:48of our flesh
00:32:49which corrected us
00:32:50and we gave them
00:32:51reverence.
00:32:52Shall we not
00:32:53much rather
00:32:53be in subjection
00:32:54to the father of spirits
00:32:56and live?
00:32:57For they are truly
00:32:58for a few days
00:32:59chastened
00:33:00after their own pleasure,
00:33:01but he for our profit
00:33:03that we might be
00:33:04partakers
00:33:05of his holiness.
00:33:08Our parents corrected
00:33:09for their pleasure.
00:33:11In other words,
00:33:12to make it easier
00:33:13on them many times.
00:33:16We have rules
00:33:17in our houses
00:33:18that are there
00:33:19largely to make
00:33:20things easier
00:33:21for parents.
00:33:23A lot of our
00:33:24correction
00:33:24is for their convenience.
00:33:26of our convenience.
00:33:28A lot of the rules
00:33:29are for our convenience.
00:33:32They weren't necessarily
00:33:33thinking of the good
00:33:35of our children.
00:33:36We are thinking
00:33:37of our convenience
00:33:38most often.
00:33:40How many times
00:33:42do we hear the story,
00:33:43now, my son,
00:33:44this hurts me
00:33:45worse than it hurts you?
00:33:48Somehow,
00:33:48I never believed that
00:33:49until I became a father
00:33:51and then I understood.
00:33:53When God corrects us,
00:33:54it is always
00:33:55for our profit
00:33:56and benefit.
00:33:59And so,
00:34:00if we truly
00:34:00respected
00:34:01our earthly fathers
00:34:02who trained us
00:34:03and brought us up
00:34:04in the right path,
00:34:05how much more
00:34:06should we respect
00:34:07our heavenly father
00:34:08who,
00:34:09for our profit,
00:34:10corrects us?
00:34:13Verse 11,
00:34:14Now no chastening
00:34:16for the present
00:34:16seems to be joyous.
00:34:19And I'm sure
00:34:20we can all agree
00:34:21with that.
00:34:22When you're going
00:34:23through a chastening
00:34:24process,
00:34:24it is never a joy.
00:34:27How many of you
00:34:28enjoy being punished?
00:34:35I'd always go into
00:34:36that nobody-loves-me
00:34:37mood.
00:34:38I'd be in the dark
00:34:39bedroom because
00:34:40we had been taken there.
00:34:42The family would
00:34:43all be out there
00:34:43in the rest of the house
00:34:45and we'd hear
00:34:46all the noise
00:34:47that you'd be
00:34:47in the dark bedroom.
00:34:50We would be
00:34:51talked to severely
00:34:52and then we would
00:34:53be given a good beating.
00:34:56Of course,
00:34:57I would yell
00:34:57so that he might
00:34:58go easier,
00:34:59making him think
00:35:00he was really
00:35:01getting through
00:35:01and he'd walk out
00:35:02and close the door.
00:35:05Then we would
00:35:06lie there
00:35:06and cry.
00:35:08I wish
00:35:09I were dead.
00:35:11They would be
00:35:12sorry then
00:35:12that they spanked me
00:35:13if they came in
00:35:14and I was dead.
00:35:16Then I'd think
00:35:17of my brother
00:35:18how he would
00:35:19be crying
00:35:19if I were dead
00:35:20and I would
00:35:20cry more.
00:35:23I suppose
00:35:24psychologists
00:35:25could have a lot
00:35:26of fun about that.
00:35:28But you lie there
00:35:29for a little while
00:35:29and you go through
00:35:30the whole little
00:35:30routine and then
00:35:31it's all over.
00:35:33Sounds like
00:35:34they're having fun
00:35:34out there.
00:35:35Why am I in here?
00:35:36Let's go and see
00:35:37what's going on.
00:35:38Why are they laughing?
00:35:41And so you go out
00:35:42and you join in
00:35:43with the family
00:35:43again and I can
00:35:45join in too.
00:35:46You see
00:35:46I've been punished.
00:35:48Now before
00:35:49I couldn't really
00:35:50join in
00:35:51because I was
00:35:51guilty.
00:35:54Boy at
00:35:55mealtime
00:35:56I didn't want
00:35:57to ask
00:35:57for the second
00:35:58piece.
00:35:58I really wanted
00:35:59that second piece
00:36:00but I was
00:36:01guilty.
00:36:03I wasn't
00:36:03going to ask.
00:36:04I couldn't
00:36:05really be a part
00:36:06of the family
00:36:06because I was
00:36:07so guilty
00:36:08and Dad had
00:36:09said
00:36:09after dinner
00:36:10my son
00:36:10you and I
00:36:12are going
00:36:12to the bedroom.
00:36:14You know
00:36:15it's hard
00:36:15to eat.
00:36:16You know
00:36:17you've got
00:36:17it coming.
00:36:18But once
00:36:19you've been
00:36:19corrected
00:36:20punished
00:36:20you become
00:36:21a family
00:36:22member again.
00:36:22No more guilt.
00:36:23It's all over.
00:36:26And so
00:36:27the chastening
00:36:27process
00:36:28isn't pleasant.
00:36:30It isn't
00:36:30joyous.
00:36:32But what is
00:36:33great is the
00:36:33fruit or the
00:36:34result.
00:36:35The relief
00:36:36of the guilt.
00:36:37The cleansing.
00:36:38How beautiful
00:36:38that is.
00:36:39When it is
00:36:39all over
00:36:40and you feel
00:36:40the sense
00:36:41of guilt
00:36:42is purged.
00:36:44Yes
00:36:44I had
00:36:45disobeyed.
00:36:46I had done
00:36:46what I had
00:36:47been told
00:36:47not to do.
00:36:48I had been
00:36:48caught
00:36:48and now
00:36:49I had been
00:36:49punished
00:36:50and I am
00:36:51no longer
00:36:51guilty.
00:36:53I was again
00:36:54a member
00:36:54of the family
00:36:55and I can
00:36:56go out
00:36:56and play
00:36:57games with
00:36:57them.
00:36:58I can
00:36:58join in
00:36:58and participate
00:36:59in all the
00:37:00things they
00:37:00are doing.
00:37:06Verse 11
00:37:07nevertheless
00:37:08the fruits
00:37:09of punishment
00:37:09the after
00:37:10effects of
00:37:11it
00:37:11the peaceable
00:37:12fruit of
00:37:12righteousness
00:37:13unto them
00:37:14that are
00:37:14exercised
00:37:15thereby.
00:37:17If I
00:37:18will accept
00:37:18this as
00:37:19God's
00:37:19correction
00:37:20I have
00:37:21been wrong
00:37:21and God
00:37:22is now
00:37:22correcting me.
00:37:23Not easy
00:37:24surely not an
00:37:25easy thing to
00:37:26take but I
00:37:26am his son
00:37:27and he loves
00:37:28me.
00:37:29He is not
00:37:29going to let
00:37:30me get by
00:37:31with it.
00:37:33After he
00:37:33has corrected
00:37:34me that
00:37:35peaceable
00:37:36fruit of
00:37:36righteousness
00:37:37that peace
00:37:37that I
00:37:38feel within
00:37:38as now
00:37:40fellowship
00:37:41with God
00:37:41is fully
00:37:42restored.
00:37:45Verse 12
00:37:46therefore lift
00:37:47up the
00:37:48hands that
00:37:48hang down.
00:37:51We get
00:37:51sort of beat
00:37:52when going
00:37:53through a
00:37:53chastening
00:37:54process.
00:37:54We are not
00:37:55so apt to
00:37:56be lifting
00:37:57our hands
00:37:57in praises
00:37:58to the
00:37:58Lord.
00:37:59But the
00:38:00Lord is
00:38:01dealing
00:38:01heavily
00:38:01with us.
00:38:02We sort
00:38:03of have
00:38:03our problems
00:38:04rejoicing
00:38:05and praising
00:38:05God.
00:38:06But lift
00:38:07up holy
00:38:08hands which
00:38:09are hanging
00:38:09down.
00:38:12Verse 12
00:38:13refers to
00:38:14the feeble
00:38:14knees.
00:38:15So let us
00:38:16return to
00:38:17that place
00:38:17of worship.
00:38:18Return to
00:38:19the place
00:38:19of full
00:38:20fellowship.
00:38:21And as we
00:38:22read in
00:38:22verses 12
00:38:23to 14
00:38:23make straight
00:38:24paths for
00:38:25your feet.
00:38:27Lest that
00:38:28which is
00:38:28lame
00:38:28be turned
00:38:29out of
00:38:29the way
00:38:30but let
00:38:31it rather
00:38:31be healed.
00:38:32For
00:38:33their peace
00:38:33with all
00:38:34men and
00:38:34holiness
00:38:34without which
00:38:35no man
00:38:36shall see
00:38:37the Lord.
00:38:39Isn't it
00:38:40interesting?
00:38:41Blessed are
00:38:42the pure
00:38:42in heart
00:38:43for they
00:38:43shall see
00:38:44God.
00:38:45For
00:38:45their peace
00:38:45with all
00:38:46men and
00:38:47holiness.
00:38:48We have
00:38:49a tendency
00:38:50to put
00:38:50down
00:38:51holiness
00:38:51because of
00:38:52what people
00:38:53have done
00:38:53with holiness.
00:38:54Making
00:38:55holiness
00:38:55a way
00:38:56of dress,
00:38:57a holiness
00:38:57a thing
00:38:58of outward
00:38:59appearance.
00:39:01So we
00:39:02have what
00:39:02are known
00:39:03as the
00:39:03holiness
00:39:04groups,
00:39:05Pentecostal
00:39:05holiness,
00:39:06pilgrim
00:39:07holiness and
00:39:08other forms
00:39:08of holiness.
00:39:10And to
00:39:11them the
00:39:11interpretation
00:39:12of holiness
00:39:12is often
00:39:13the women
00:39:14not wearing
00:39:14make-up,
00:39:15not wearing
00:39:16jewellery
00:39:17and a
00:39:18sombre way
00:39:19of dress.
00:39:20And we
00:39:21have properly
00:39:22revolted against
00:39:23that
00:39:23interpretation
00:39:24of holiness.
00:39:25Holiness
00:39:26is a
00:39:27thing of
00:39:27the heart
00:39:28not of
00:39:28outward
00:39:29appearance.
00:39:30You can
00:39:31go through
00:39:31all the
00:39:32outward
00:39:32appearances
00:39:33of holiness
00:39:33that you
00:39:34like according
00:39:34to their
00:39:35standards and
00:39:36they do
00:39:36have their
00:39:39public standards
00:39:40of holiness.
00:39:41You can
00:39:42deny yourself
00:39:42all those
00:39:43things they
00:39:43say are
00:39:44not holy
00:39:44but within
00:39:46your heart
00:39:46you can be
00:39:47even more
00:39:47filthy and
00:39:48impure than
00:39:49anyone else.
00:39:51true holiness
00:39:52is a
00:39:53thing of
00:39:53the heart.
00:39:56Jesus
00:39:56told us
00:39:57it is not
00:39:58what goes
00:39:59into a
00:39:59man's
00:39:59mouth
00:40:00that
00:40:00defiles
00:40:01a man.
00:40:01It's that
00:40:02which comes
00:40:03out of
00:40:03his mouth
00:40:04because out
00:40:05of the
00:40:05abundance
00:40:06of the
00:40:06heart
00:40:06the
00:40:07mouth
00:40:07speaks.
00:40:10Holiness
00:40:10is not
00:40:11and cannot
00:40:11be demonstrated
00:40:12in our
00:40:13outward
00:40:14appearance.
00:40:15It is in
00:40:15our heart
00:40:15that desire
00:40:16for God
00:40:17and to
00:40:17walk
00:40:18with God.
00:40:19And really
00:40:20I think
00:40:20that holiness
00:40:21comes from
00:40:22the consciousness
00:40:22of the
00:40:23presence of
00:40:24God.
00:40:25When I
00:40:26am aware
00:40:26that in
00:40:27him I
00:40:27live and
00:40:28move and
00:40:28have my
00:40:28being,
00:40:29that I
00:40:30walk in
00:40:30his presence
00:40:31continually,
00:40:32that has
00:40:33more effect
00:40:34upon the
00:40:34way I
00:40:35respond and
00:40:35everything
00:40:36else than
00:40:37anything
00:40:37else I
00:40:38know.
00:40:39And it
00:40:40isn't the
00:40:40outward
00:40:41observance
00:40:41of a
00:40:42bunch of
00:40:42rules.
00:40:44You
00:40:45ought to
00:40:45have read
00:40:45the list
00:40:46of things
00:40:46that were
00:40:47the do's
00:40:48and do
00:40:48nots
00:40:48when I
00:40:49was a
00:40:50child
00:40:50growing up
00:40:51in a
00:40:51holiness
00:40:51church.
00:40:54I mean
00:40:54about the
00:40:55only thing
00:40:55they left
00:40:55for us
00:40:56teenagers
00:40:56was necking,
00:40:57going out
00:40:58and parking.
00:40:59You
00:40:59couldn't go
00:41:00to shows,
00:41:00you couldn't
00:41:01go dancing,
00:41:01you couldn't
00:41:02do anything.
00:41:05Fortunately,
00:41:05they never
00:41:06put a
00:41:06prohibition on
00:41:07that,
00:41:08so we
00:41:09were left
00:41:09with something.
00:41:10And there
00:41:11we all
00:41:11thought we
00:41:13were all
00:41:13these righteous
00:41:14little
00:41:14prudes,
00:41:14because we
00:41:15didn't do
00:41:16any of
00:41:16these
00:41:16negative,
00:41:17horrible,
00:41:17awful,
00:41:18worldly,
00:41:18sinful
00:41:18things.
00:41:20But Jesus
00:41:21really laid
00:41:23it on the
00:41:23Pharisees
00:41:24because of
00:41:25their whole
00:41:25concept of
00:41:26holiness being
00:41:27outward.
00:41:28It was all
00:41:29about rules
00:41:30and regulations,
00:41:31outward
00:41:32conformity to
00:41:33certain laws.
00:41:35But there
00:41:36were such
00:41:36inconsistencies
00:41:37and Jesus
00:41:38pointed these
00:41:39out.
00:41:40But they
00:41:40didn't like
00:41:41that.
00:41:41He said,
00:41:42you strain
00:41:43out a
00:41:44gnat,
00:41:45but you
00:41:45swallow
00:41:45a camel.
00:41:50Apparently,
00:41:50there was a
00:41:51common sight
00:41:51to see a
00:41:52Pharisee on
00:41:52the street
00:41:53corner putting
00:41:53his finger
00:41:54down his
00:41:55mouth,
00:41:55trying to
00:41:56regurgitate
00:41:57because he
00:41:58walked along
00:41:59and swallowed
00:42:00a gnat in
00:42:01his mouth.
00:42:02It got
00:42:02caught in
00:42:02his throat.
00:42:03And I
00:42:04got to get
00:42:04the thing
00:42:05out because
00:42:05it hadn't
00:42:06been bled
00:42:07and therefore
00:42:07it wasn't
00:42:08clean.
00:42:09You cannot
00:42:10eat meat
00:42:10that isn't
00:42:11bled.
00:42:11It's against
00:42:12the law.
00:42:12So you
00:42:13see them
00:42:14straining
00:42:14trying to
00:42:15get rid
00:42:15of this
00:42:15gnat.
00:42:19He said,
00:42:20Man,
00:42:21the outside
00:42:22of the
00:42:22platter is
00:42:23so clean,
00:42:23but inside
00:42:24it is filthy.
00:42:25You are
00:42:26like the
00:42:26whitened
00:42:27sepulchers.
00:42:28And they
00:42:29would paint
00:42:29the tombstones
00:42:30with this
00:42:31whitewash.
00:42:32And so it
00:42:32was all
00:42:33white on
00:42:33the outside,
00:42:34but on
00:42:35the inside
00:42:35you're full
00:42:36of dead
00:42:36men's
00:42:36bones.
00:42:37You are
00:42:38like a
00:42:38sepulchre,
00:42:39outwardly
00:42:40whitewashed,
00:42:41but with
00:42:42standards of
00:42:43holiness.
00:42:48Nevertheless,
00:42:49because of
00:42:49that we
00:42:49should not
00:42:50neglect the
00:42:50fact that
00:42:51there is
00:42:52true holiness
00:42:52that each
00:42:53of us should
00:42:54aspire to,
00:42:56living a
00:42:56holy life,
00:42:57living a
00:42:57pure life,
00:42:58living a
00:42:58life that
00:42:59won't
00:42:59pleasing to
00:43:00God.
00:43:01For
00:43:02without
00:43:02holiness no
00:43:03man shall
00:43:03see God,
00:43:04and that
00:43:05should be a
00:43:05concern to
00:43:06each and
00:43:06every one
00:43:07of us.
00:43:08Verse 15
00:43:09tells us,
00:43:10Look diligently
00:43:11lest any
00:43:12man fall
00:43:12in the
00:43:13grace of
00:43:14God.
00:43:16There has
00:43:17to be real
00:43:18care taken
00:43:18that we do
00:43:19not presume
00:43:20upon God's
00:43:21grace.
00:43:21It is not
00:43:21a cloak
00:43:22to cover
00:43:23our
00:43:23sinfulness.
00:43:25It is
00:43:25something there
00:43:26for our
00:43:26benefit and
00:43:27good that
00:43:28we will
00:43:28rely and
00:43:29trust totally
00:43:29in Jesus
00:43:30Christ,
00:43:31rather than
00:43:31trusting in
00:43:32our own
00:43:32works.
00:43:34It is
00:43:34there to
00:43:35bring us
00:43:35to God,
00:43:36because my
00:43:37works can
00:43:37never bring
00:43:38me to
00:43:38God,
00:43:38because they
00:43:39are never
00:43:39good enough.
00:43:40But it
00:43:41is not
00:43:41there just
00:43:42to cover
00:43:42over any
00:43:43kind of
00:43:43lying,
00:43:44stealing,
00:43:44cheating,
00:43:45and anything
00:43:46else that
00:43:46I might
00:43:46want to
00:43:47do,
00:43:47saying,
00:43:48well,
00:43:48God's
00:43:48grace will
00:43:49cover it.
00:43:50We
00:43:51actually then
00:43:52fall from
00:43:53the grace
00:43:53of God,
00:43:54for we do
00:43:54not understand
00:43:55God's
00:43:56grace.
00:43:58Verse 15
00:44:00tells us,
00:44:01Lest any
00:44:01root of
00:44:01bitterness
00:44:02springing up
00:44:03trouble you,
00:44:04and thereby
00:44:05may defile
00:44:07us.
00:44:09Bitterness
00:44:10is something
00:44:10we really
00:44:11must guard
00:44:12against,
00:44:13for what a
00:44:14destroyer it
00:44:14can be of
00:44:15ourselves,
00:44:16what a
00:44:17problem a
00:44:17bitter attitude
00:44:18can create
00:44:19in us.
00:44:21The chemicals
00:44:22that are produced
00:44:22by your glands
00:44:23when your heart
00:44:24and mind are
00:44:24filled with
00:44:25bitterness,
00:44:26destructive
00:44:27chemicals
00:44:28tearing your
00:44:29body and
00:44:30what it does
00:44:31to others.
00:44:33verse 16
00:44:34continues,
00:44:35Lest there
00:44:35be a
00:44:36fornicator
00:44:37or profane
00:44:37person,
00:44:38such as
00:44:39Esau,
00:44:39who for
00:44:40one morsel
00:44:41of meat
00:44:41sold his
00:44:42birthright.
00:44:45We
00:44:45remember that
00:44:46Esau came
00:44:47in having
00:44:47been out in
00:44:48the fields.
00:44:49He was
00:44:49hungry,
00:44:50and there
00:44:51his dainty
00:44:52little brother
00:44:53Jacob had
00:44:54been fixing
00:44:54up some
00:44:55delicious bits
00:44:56of food,
00:44:56and he
00:44:57said,
00:44:57Go on,
00:44:58give me
00:44:58some of
00:44:58that,
00:44:59that smells
00:44:59great.
00:45:00Jacob,
00:45:01ever the
00:45:02one for
00:45:02an opportunity,
00:45:03said,
00:45:04Well,
00:45:04trade it
00:45:05for your
00:45:05birthright.
00:45:07Hey man,
00:45:08I'm going
00:45:08to die of
00:45:09hunger,
00:45:09what good's
00:45:10my birthright?
00:45:11Sure.
00:45:12He didn't
00:45:13care about
00:45:13his birthright,
00:45:14and so he
00:45:16sold it
00:45:16for a bowl
00:45:17of porridge.
00:45:20Verse 17,
00:45:21For you know
00:45:22that afterward,
00:45:23when he would
00:45:23have inherited
00:45:24the blessing,
00:45:25he was rejected,
00:45:26for he found
00:45:27no place
00:45:27of repentance.
00:45:30The reason
00:45:31for his
00:45:31rejection,
00:45:32he found
00:45:33no place
00:45:33for repentance.
00:45:37Beware,
00:45:37then,
00:45:38of an
00:45:38unrepentant
00:45:39heart,
00:45:39set in
00:45:40its ways.
00:45:41It won't
00:45:42change.
00:45:45But the
00:45:45words of
00:45:46verse 7
00:45:46continue,
00:45:47even though
00:45:48he sought
00:45:49it with
00:45:49tears.
00:45:53Do not
00:45:53make a
00:45:54mistake here,
00:45:54thinking that
00:45:55he could
00:45:55not repent,
00:45:56that he
00:45:57was trying
00:45:57to repent,
00:45:58but couldn't.
00:46:00No,
00:46:01all he
00:46:01sought with
00:46:01tears was
00:46:02the blessing.
00:46:05When Jacob
00:46:05received the
00:46:06blessing,
00:46:06Esau finally
00:46:07came in
00:46:08with the
00:46:08venison for
00:46:09his father
00:46:09and said,
00:46:10Hey,
00:46:10I fixed
00:46:11the
00:46:11barbecued
00:46:12venison just
00:46:13like you'd
00:46:13like.
00:46:13And he
00:46:14said,
00:46:15Who was it
00:46:15then that
00:46:16was here
00:46:16earlier?
00:46:17I've already
00:46:17given the
00:46:18blessing.
00:46:19He said,
00:46:20No,
00:46:20I'm Esau,
00:46:21your son.
00:46:23Well,
00:46:23it must have
00:46:24been Jacob
00:46:24then,
00:46:25but I
00:46:25blessed him.
00:46:27Esau said,
00:46:28Oh,
00:46:28but you
00:46:28must bless
00:46:29me too.
00:46:30And he
00:46:30began to
00:46:31weep.
00:46:31He wanted
00:46:32the blessings
00:46:32of the
00:46:33father.
00:46:33He sought
00:46:34the blessing
00:46:34with tears.
00:46:35And he
00:46:36said,
00:46:36I can't.
00:46:37I've already
00:46:38given everything
00:46:39to your
00:46:39brother.
00:46:41Even though
00:46:42he sought
00:46:42the blessings
00:46:43with tears,
00:46:44there was no
00:46:45repentance,
00:46:46no place
00:46:47for repentance
00:46:47in his heart.
00:46:49All he
00:46:49wanted was
00:46:50the benefit.
00:46:53There
00:46:54are truly
00:46:54a large
00:46:55number of
00:46:56people like
00:46:56that.
00:46:57And we
00:46:57are told
00:46:58to be
00:46:58aware,
00:46:58lest we
00:46:59are like
00:46:59Esau,
00:47:00who really
00:47:01disregarded
00:47:02the birthright
00:47:02and didn't
00:47:03care about
00:47:03it,
00:47:04and so
00:47:05lost the
00:47:05blessing.
00:47:06Some of
00:47:07you don't
00:47:08really care
00:47:09about being
00:47:09a Christian,
00:47:10but you
00:47:10want the
00:47:10blessings of
00:47:11Christianity.
00:47:13I want
00:47:13to live
00:47:14in a
00:47:14Christian
00:47:14nation.
00:47:15I don't
00:47:15want to
00:47:16live in
00:47:16a pagan
00:47:17nation.
00:47:18But to
00:47:19me,
00:47:19a Christian,
00:47:19no way.
00:47:21Live in
00:47:21Russia,
00:47:22no way.
00:47:23I want
00:47:23the blessing,
00:47:24the freedom
00:47:24that Christianity
00:47:25brings wherever
00:47:27it goes.
00:47:29But there
00:47:30is no place
00:47:30in our
00:47:31heart for
00:47:31repentance.
00:47:34And then
00:47:35we come to
00:47:35the contrast.
00:47:39Our
00:47:39apostle is
00:47:41writing to
00:47:42the Hebrews
00:47:42who had
00:47:43lived their
00:47:43lives under
00:47:44the law.
00:47:45They were
00:47:45now come to
00:47:46a new
00:47:46covenant
00:47:47through Jesus
00:47:47Christ and
00:47:48so a new
00:47:49relationship
00:47:50with God
00:47:50under the
00:47:51new
00:47:51covenant.
00:47:52He speaks
00:47:53again in
00:47:54contrasting now
00:47:55the old
00:47:56with the
00:47:56new.
00:47:56And he
00:47:57said,
00:47:58For you
00:47:58have not
00:47:59come to
00:48:00the mount
00:48:00that might
00:48:01be touched,
00:48:02that burnt
00:48:02with fire,
00:48:03nor enter
00:48:04the blackness
00:48:05and darkness
00:48:06of the
00:48:06tempest and
00:48:07the sound
00:48:07of the
00:48:07trumpet and
00:48:08the voice
00:48:09of words,
00:48:10which voice
00:48:11they heard
00:48:11entreated that
00:48:12the word
00:48:13should not be
00:48:13spoken to
00:48:14them any
00:48:14more,
00:48:15for they
00:48:16could not
00:48:16endure that
00:48:17which was
00:48:17commanded.
00:48:18And if
00:48:19so much
00:48:19as a beast
00:48:20touched the
00:48:21mountain,
00:48:21it should
00:48:22be stoned
00:48:22or thrust
00:48:24through with
00:48:24a spear.
00:48:25And so
00:48:26awesome was
00:48:27the sight
00:48:27that Moses
00:48:28said,
00:48:29I exceedingly
00:48:29fear and
00:48:30quake.
00:48:31Verses 18
00:48:32to 21.
00:48:36Let us
00:48:37go back
00:48:37for a moment
00:48:37to Exodus
00:48:38chapter 19
00:48:40and read
00:48:40the account
00:48:41of Mount
00:48:42Sinai where
00:48:43God gave
00:48:43the law
00:48:44to Moses.
00:48:46And Moses
00:48:47went down
00:48:48from the
00:48:48mount to
00:48:48the people,
00:48:49and he
00:48:49sanctified the
00:48:50people,
00:48:51and they
00:48:51washed their
00:48:52clothes.
00:48:53He said
00:48:53to the
00:48:54people,
00:48:54Be ready,
00:48:55for in the
00:48:55third day
00:48:56do not
00:48:56come to
00:48:57your wives.
00:48:59And it
00:49:00came to
00:49:00pass on
00:49:01the third
00:49:01day in
00:49:01the morning
00:49:02there was
00:49:02thunder and
00:49:03lightning and
00:49:03a thick
00:49:04cloud upon
00:49:04the mountain,
00:49:05and the
00:49:06voice of
00:49:06a trumpet
00:49:07extremely
00:49:07loud,
00:49:08so that
00:49:09all the
00:49:09people that
00:49:10were in
00:49:10the camp
00:49:11trembled.
00:49:13And Moses
00:49:13brought forth
00:49:14the people
00:49:15out of
00:49:15the camp
00:49:16to meet
00:49:16God,
00:49:17and they
00:49:17stood at
00:49:18the nether
00:49:18part of
00:49:19the mount.
00:49:20And Mount
00:49:20Sinai was
00:49:21altogether in
00:49:22smoke,
00:49:23because the
00:49:23Lord descended
00:49:24upon it in
00:49:25fire.
00:49:26And the
00:49:27smoke thereof
00:49:27ascended as
00:49:28the smoke
00:49:29of a furnace,
00:49:30and the
00:49:30whole mountain
00:49:31quaked and
00:49:32shook greatly.
00:49:33And when
00:49:34the voice of
00:49:35the trumpet
00:49:35sounded long
00:49:36and waxed
00:49:37louder and
00:49:37louder,
00:49:38Moses spoke,
00:49:39and God
00:49:40answered him
00:49:40by a voice,
00:49:43and the
00:49:43Lord came
00:49:44down upon
00:49:44Mount Sinai
00:49:45on the
00:49:45top of
00:49:46the mountain,
00:49:46and the
00:49:47Lord called
00:49:48Moses up
00:49:48to the
00:49:49top,
00:49:49and Moses
00:49:50went up.
00:49:51And the
00:49:52Lord said
00:49:52to Moses,
00:49:53Go down,
00:49:54charge the
00:49:54people,
00:49:55lest they
00:49:55break through
00:49:56to the
00:49:56Lord and
00:49:57gaze,
00:49:57and many
00:49:58of them
00:49:58perish.
00:50:02And let
00:50:02the priests
00:50:03also come
00:50:04near,
00:50:04and so
00:50:05forth.
00:50:06There is
00:50:07here this
00:50:07most awesome
00:50:08scene,
00:50:09and then in
00:50:10the next
00:50:10chapter,
00:50:11God gave
00:50:12the law
00:50:12to Moses.
00:50:14He said,
00:50:16You haven't
00:50:16come to this
00:50:16awesome scene
00:50:17on Mount Sinai,
00:50:19the mountain
00:50:20that couldn't
00:50:20be touched
00:50:21with hands.
00:50:22People did
00:50:23not dare to
00:50:24come closer,
00:50:25the mountain
00:50:26that was
00:50:27covered with
00:50:27the smoke
00:50:28and the fire
00:50:29and thunder,
00:50:29the darkness,
00:50:30the tempest,
00:50:31and the trumpet
00:50:31sound.
00:50:33So awesome
00:50:34was the sight
00:50:35that Moses
00:50:36himself shook
00:50:37with fear.
00:50:39But you
00:50:39have come
00:50:40to Mount
00:50:41Zion,
00:50:42to the city
00:50:42of the
00:50:43living God,
00:50:43the heavenly
00:50:44Jerusalem,
00:50:45to an
00:50:46innumerable
00:50:47company of
00:50:47angels,
00:50:48to the
00:50:48general
00:50:49assembly
00:50:49and church
00:50:50of the
00:50:50firstborn,
00:50:51which are
00:50:51written in
00:50:52heaven,
00:50:52and to
00:50:53God,
00:50:53the judge
00:50:54of all,
00:50:55and to
00:50:55the spirits
00:50:55of just
00:50:56men made
00:50:57perfect,
00:50:57and to
00:50:58Jesus,
00:50:59the mediator
00:50:59of the
00:51:00new covenant,
00:51:00the blood
00:51:01of the
00:51:03sprinkling,
00:51:03that speaks
00:51:04of better
00:51:05things than
00:51:05that of
00:51:06Abel,
00:51:06verses 22
00:51:08to 24.
00:51:10Haven't
00:51:11come to
00:51:12Mount
00:51:12Zion,
00:51:12which,
00:51:13if you
00:51:13came to
00:51:14it,
00:51:14you'd be
00:51:15thrust
00:51:15through,
00:51:16or stoned.
00:51:17We have
00:51:17come to
00:51:18another
00:51:18man,
00:51:18to Mount
00:51:19Zion,
00:51:19to the
00:51:20city of
00:51:20the
00:51:20living
00:51:20God,
00:51:21this
00:51:22heavenly
00:51:22Jerusalem,
00:51:23the
00:51:23myriads
00:51:24of angels,
00:51:25the church
00:51:25of the
00:51:25firstborn,
00:51:26born again
00:51:27to God,
00:51:28the spirits
00:51:29of just
00:51:29men made
00:51:30perfect to
00:51:31Jesus.
00:51:32And so
00:51:33verse 25
00:51:33says,
00:51:34see that
00:51:35you refuse
00:51:36not the
00:51:37one who
00:51:37speaks.
00:51:41Now God
00:51:42who at
00:51:42sundry times
00:51:43and in
00:51:44different ways
00:51:45spoke to
00:51:46us through
00:51:47the prophets,
00:51:47has spoken
00:51:48to us
00:51:49through his
00:51:49own dear
00:51:50son.
00:51:51Coming back
00:51:52now to the
00:51:52first chapter,
00:51:53the introduction
00:51:54to the
00:51:54book.
00:51:55The book
00:51:56of Hebrews
00:51:57is the
00:51:57message of
00:51:58God to
00:51:58man through
00:51:59his son.
00:52:00The better
00:52:01covenant that
00:52:01God established
00:52:02through the
00:52:03son,
00:52:03the better
00:52:03way,
00:52:04the better
00:52:04sacrifice.
00:52:06So be
00:52:06careful that
00:52:07you do
00:52:07not refuse
00:52:08the one
00:52:09who speaks,
00:52:09that is
00:52:10Jesus Christ,
00:52:11and the
00:52:12revelation of
00:52:13God given
00:52:13to us
00:52:14through him.
00:52:15But verse
00:52:1625 continues,
00:52:18for if they
00:52:19escaped not
00:52:20who refused
00:52:20him that
00:52:21spoke on
00:52:21earth,
00:52:23much more
00:52:24shall we
00:52:24not escape
00:52:25if we turn
00:52:26away from
00:52:27him that
00:52:27speaks from
00:52:28heaven.
00:52:30And so
00:52:31Jesus came
00:52:32down to
00:52:32speak to
00:52:32us the
00:52:33words of
00:52:33God,
00:52:34to reveal
00:52:35to man
00:52:35the truth
00:52:36of God,
00:52:36to speak
00:52:37to us
00:52:37the truth
00:52:38of God.
00:52:40So be
00:52:40careful that
00:52:41you do not
00:52:42refuse that
00:52:42word of
00:52:43Jesus Christ,
00:52:44for they
00:52:45that despised
00:52:46the law of
00:52:47Moses rejected
00:52:47it.
00:52:49They were
00:52:49stoned if
00:52:50they had
00:52:50two or three
00:52:51witnesses
00:52:51against them.
00:52:52How much
00:52:53more shall
00:52:54we not
00:52:54escape if
00:52:56we turn
00:52:56from the
00:52:56word of
00:52:57Jesus Christ
00:52:58spoken to
00:52:59us this
00:52:59heavenly
00:53:00messenger?
00:53:01Verse 26
00:53:03Whose voice
00:53:04then shook
00:53:04the earth,
00:53:05but now
00:53:06he has
00:53:07promised,
00:53:07saying,
00:53:08Yet once
00:53:09more I
00:53:10shake not
00:53:10the earth
00:53:11only,
00:53:11but also
00:53:12the heavens.
00:53:15There will
00:53:15be the
00:53:16most tremendous
00:53:17cataclysmic
00:53:18catastrophe that
00:53:19is going to
00:53:19befall the
00:53:20universe.
00:53:21The Bible
00:53:22speaks about
00:53:23it in
00:53:23several places.
00:53:25The Bible
00:53:26says that
00:53:26the heavens
00:53:27are going to
00:53:27be rolled
00:53:28like a
00:53:28scroll,
00:53:29and the
00:53:29earth is
00:53:30going to
00:53:30stagger to
00:53:31and throw
00:53:31like a
00:53:31drunken
00:53:32man,
00:53:32be moved
00:53:33out of
00:53:34its orbit.
00:53:34It speaks
00:53:35of a
00:53:36meteorite
00:53:36shower
00:53:37falling to
00:53:37earth,
00:53:38a tremendous
00:53:39shaking,
00:53:39not only
00:53:40of the
00:53:40earth,
00:53:41but of
00:53:41the heavens
00:53:42also.
00:53:44Verse 27
00:53:45And this
00:53:46word yet
00:53:46once more
00:53:47signifies the
00:53:48removing of
00:53:49those things
00:53:49that are
00:53:50shaken,
00:53:50as of
00:53:51things that
00:53:52are made,
00:53:52and of
00:53:53those things
00:53:53which cannot
00:53:54be shaken
00:53:54may remain.
00:53:57And so
00:53:58God's going
00:53:58to shake
00:53:59the earth.
00:53:59He shook
00:54:00it when
00:54:01he spoke
00:54:01from Mount
00:54:01Sinai,
00:54:02but yet
00:54:03once more.
00:54:05And he
00:54:05said,
00:54:05I'm not
00:54:06going to
00:54:06shake just
00:54:06the earth,
00:54:07I'm going
00:54:07to shake
00:54:08the heavens
00:54:08too,
00:54:09until
00:54:09everything
00:54:10that can
00:54:10be shaken
00:54:11will be
00:54:11removed,
00:54:12and only
00:54:13the unshakable
00:54:14shall remain.
00:54:17Peter,
00:54:18talking about
00:54:19the great
00:54:19cataclysm that
00:54:20is to come,
00:54:21talks about
00:54:21the heavens
00:54:22being on
00:54:23fire,
00:54:24melting with a
00:54:25fervent heat,
00:54:26the elements
00:54:26dissolving.
00:54:29Seeing then,
00:54:30he said,
00:54:30talking of the
00:54:31material universe
00:54:32that all these
00:54:33things are to be
00:54:33dissolved,
00:54:34what manner of
00:54:36person should we
00:54:37be?
00:54:38Everything that
00:54:39can be shaken
00:54:40will be shaken,
00:54:41that is,
00:54:42the material world.
00:54:44Only the things
00:54:45which cannot be
00:54:46shaken will remain,
00:54:48i.e.
00:54:48the spiritual
00:54:49things.
00:54:50You have only
00:54:51one life,
00:54:52and soon it
00:54:52will be over,
00:54:53and only the
00:54:54things you do
00:54:55for Christ
00:54:55are going to
00:54:56last.
00:54:57Everything else
00:54:57will be
00:54:58destroyed.
00:55:00The whole
00:55:01material universe
00:55:02is going to
00:55:03go up in
00:55:03flames one
00:55:04day,
00:55:04it will be
00:55:05wiped out.
00:55:07And so if
00:55:08you put all
00:55:09your value
00:55:09in the
00:55:10material,
00:55:11when this
00:55:11material goes
00:55:12or when you
00:55:13go,
00:55:13when death
00:55:14comes,
00:55:14you will be
00:55:15totally wiped
00:55:16out,
00:55:17because your
00:55:18entire value
00:55:18system was
00:55:19based on the
00:55:20material world
00:55:21around you.
00:55:23But if
00:55:24your value
00:55:25system is
00:55:26based on
00:55:27the spiritual
00:55:28world,
00:55:29that cannot
00:55:29be shaken,
00:55:30that will
00:55:31last forever,
00:55:32that cannot
00:55:32be dissolved
00:55:33when the
00:55:33elements are
00:55:34dissolved
00:55:34with that
00:55:35fervent heat.
00:55:37What manner
00:55:37of person
00:55:38should we
00:55:39be,
00:55:39Peter asked.
00:55:40We must
00:55:41be spiritual,
00:55:42we should
00:55:42put our
00:55:42value in
00:55:43the spiritual
00:55:44things,
00:55:44we should
00:55:45walk after
00:55:46the spirit,
00:55:47we should
00:55:47live after
00:55:48the spirit,
00:55:49and that is
00:55:50essentially what
00:55:50the Bible
00:55:51encourages us
00:55:52all through,
00:55:53telling us
00:55:54again and
00:55:54again and
00:55:55again that
00:55:56the life of
00:55:56the spirit
00:55:57is superior
00:55:58to the life
00:55:58of the flesh.
00:56:01That,
00:56:01basically,
00:56:02is the
00:56:03message that
00:56:03the world
00:56:04hates.
00:56:04They do
00:56:05not want
00:56:06to hear
00:56:06this.
00:56:07They are
00:56:08caught up
00:56:08in their
00:56:08little material
00:56:09gods,
00:56:10their wonderful
00:56:11possessions.
00:56:12The whole
00:56:13value system
00:56:13of this
00:56:14world is
00:56:15based upon
00:56:16material things.
00:56:18and to
00:56:19say that
00:56:20all will
00:56:20be wiped
00:56:20out,
00:56:21that all
00:56:21will be
00:56:22destroyed,
00:56:22that is
00:56:23a threat
00:56:23to them.
00:56:24They don't
00:56:25want to
00:56:25hear this,
00:56:26but it
00:56:27is true.
00:56:29God
00:56:29said,
00:56:30I am
00:56:30going to
00:56:31shake
00:56:31once again
00:56:32the earth
00:56:32and the
00:56:32heavens,
00:56:33and that
00:56:34signifies
00:56:35that anything
00:56:35that can
00:56:36be shaken
00:56:36is going
00:56:37to be
00:56:37removed,
00:56:38and only
00:56:39that which
00:56:40cannot be
00:56:40shaken
00:56:40is going
00:56:41to remain.
00:56:45The chapter
00:56:46concludes
00:56:4828 and
00:56:4929
00:56:49Wherefore we
00:56:50receive a
00:56:51kingdom which
00:56:52cannot be
00:56:52moved.
00:56:53Let us
00:56:54have grace
00:56:54whereby we
00:56:55may serve
00:56:55God
00:56:56acceptably
00:56:57with reverence
00:56:58and fear.
00:56:59For God,
00:57:00our God,
00:57:01is a
00:57:01consuming
00:57:02fire.
00:57:05How
00:57:06interesting.
00:57:07We are
00:57:07told in
00:57:08Isaiah that
00:57:08when God
00:57:09destroyed the
00:57:10larger Syrian
00:57:10army that
00:57:11had come
00:57:11against the
00:57:12southern
00:57:12kingdom of
00:57:13Judah,
00:57:14in one
00:57:14night an
00:57:15angel of
00:57:16the Lord
00:57:16went out
00:57:16to the
00:57:17Assyrian
00:57:17army and
00:57:18destroyed
00:57:19185,000
00:57:21troops.
00:57:22One
00:57:22night destroyed
00:57:23the army,
00:57:24one angel.
00:57:26The
00:57:27following
00:57:27morning when
00:57:28the Israelites
00:57:29got up and
00:57:29looked out to
00:57:30see the
00:57:30enemy that
00:57:31had been
00:57:31camped around
00:57:32them,
00:57:33there was
00:57:33nothing but
00:57:34185,000
00:57:36dead corpses.
00:57:38And it
00:57:39said,
00:57:40a fear
00:57:41gripped the
00:57:41hearts of
00:57:42the sinners
00:57:42in Zion.
00:57:44Those that
00:57:44were in
00:57:45the city
00:57:45were sinners.
00:57:46They really
00:57:47got scared.
00:57:48They saw
00:57:49what the
00:57:49fire of
00:57:50God could
00:57:50do and
00:57:50they said,
00:57:51who of
00:57:51us can
00:57:52dwell in
00:57:52the midst
00:57:53of the
00:57:53devouring
00:57:54fire?
00:57:55Isaiah
00:57:5533,
00:57:5614.
00:57:57They panicked
00:57:58when they
00:57:59saw what
00:57:59God could
00:58:00do.
00:58:01Our
00:58:01God is
00:58:02a
00:58:02consuming
00:58:03fire.
00:58:06Well,
00:58:06that all
00:58:07depends.
00:58:08Fire is an
00:58:09interesting
00:58:10phenomenon
00:58:10and nature.
00:58:12One thing
00:58:12you can say
00:58:13about fire
00:58:13is that it
00:58:14is everywhere.
00:58:16There is
00:58:17what they
00:58:17call
00:58:18aeromachisis.
00:58:20A long
00:58:20word,
00:58:21but it
00:58:21means the
00:58:21slow-burning
00:58:22fire of
00:58:23nature.
00:58:24Take a
00:58:25piece of
00:58:25metal and
00:58:25lay it
00:58:26outside.
00:58:27And in a
00:58:27little while,
00:58:28the bare
00:58:28metal will
00:58:29start to
00:58:29have little
00:58:30bronze
00:58:30specks.
00:58:32What are
00:58:33those little
00:58:33bronze specks?
00:58:35oxidation,
00:58:37the slow-burning
00:58:38fire of
00:58:38nature,
00:58:39as nature
00:58:40starts to
00:58:40deteriorate
00:58:41the piece
00:58:42of metal,
00:58:42starts eating
00:58:43it away.
00:58:45Slow-burning
00:58:46fire of
00:58:47nature,
00:58:48destroying,
00:58:49corroding.
00:58:52No
00:58:52sooner
00:58:53do we
00:58:53drive the
00:58:54last nail
00:58:54into our
00:58:55buildings than
00:58:56the things
00:58:56start to
00:58:57slowly erode.
00:58:59We have
00:58:59to keep
00:59:00it up.
00:59:00We have
00:59:01to keep
00:59:01painting.
00:59:02We have
00:59:02a process
00:59:03of continual
00:59:03renewal.
00:59:05The
00:59:05slow-burning
00:59:06fire of
00:59:07nature
00:59:07slowly,
00:59:08gradually,
00:59:10unceasingly
00:59:10devours
00:59:11everything.
00:59:13Fire,
00:59:14an interesting
00:59:15substance
00:59:15because it
00:59:16consumes.
00:59:18But fire
00:59:19is also
00:59:19used to
00:59:20transform
00:59:20into
00:59:21permanency.
00:59:22If you
00:59:23put the
00:59:23alloy into
00:59:24the fire
00:59:25and heat
00:59:25it,
00:59:25it becomes
00:59:26steel,
00:59:26hardened
00:59:27and tempered
00:59:28by the
00:59:28fire.
00:59:29So fire
00:59:30is interesting.
00:59:31It can
00:59:32give
00:59:32permanency
00:59:33while
00:59:33consuming
00:59:34other
00:59:34things.
00:59:35It all
00:59:36depends
00:59:36on the
00:59:36material
00:59:37that we
00:59:37are
00:59:38working
00:59:38with.

00:59:54it
00:59:54do
00:59:54to
00:59:54you?
