Is it a smart move for the Tigers to start Tarik Skubal Wednesday afternoon?
Transcript
00:00Ed, I'm listening.
00:00I sure do.
00:02So the Detroit Tigers have announced that Jake Rogers is being DFA'd
00:06and A.J. Hinch also announced Tarek Skubel will make his start tomorrow.
00:15I got nothing.
00:17I mean, the Rogers thing is going to be a backup singer to the main dish here.
00:22I don't know how you don't trade Rogers.
00:25Plenty of teams need a good defensive backup catcher.
00:27Obviously, he can't hit worth a lick to DFA him.
00:30Just seems weird, especially instead of Outman, who's like five for a hundred.
00:35Yes, one of them was a three run.
00:36They did the same thing to Jemai and then eventually traded him.
00:39So maybe that happens.
00:41Yeah, maybe clears waivers.
00:43The Skubel thing.
00:45You know what?
00:46I'd prefer it if you guys would address it.
00:47I have nothing.
00:48I have nothing left to say.
00:50Honestly, they're really tempting fate.
00:54That's all I can tell you.
00:55There's no world.
00:56He throws one bad pitch, one tweak, one twinge, one pull.
01:02It just, I don't have anything nice to say, so I'm not going to say anything at all.
01:08Has there ever been an MLB pitcher go out to the mound and bubble wrap?
01:13A little cushion, maybe?
01:14Corbin?
01:15I mean, this is...
01:16If anyone can name one reason he's pitching tomorrow, I'm here.
01:20Here.
01:20Phone lines are open.
01:22Open, okay?
01:24If anyone can give me a singular reason why he's pitching tomorrow, other than ticket sales,
01:30I'm willing to just listen, okay?
01:33Please.
01:34I'm here.
01:35It's like a telethon.
01:36I'm begging you for your money for people who don't have houses.
01:39Here.
01:40What's the number here?
01:421-800-ESPLAIN-TO-ME.
01:44Okay.
01:45Like, can anyone give me a singular reason you pitch him tomorrow?
01:48Yeah.
01:49Hi.
01:50Am I on the air?
01:51Hey, Mike, I love the show.
01:53You do a great job.
01:55Um, he's pitching tomorrow because he's going to be pitching tomorrow.
02:01He's going to be pitching his next time in the rotation.
02:04Because they're not pitching.
02:04And the next time in the rotation.
02:07Because he's going to be a Tiger.
02:09Is this a sign they're not trading him?
02:13No.
02:14Yes!
02:15Yes, it is!
02:15I've been saying it for months.
02:17The whole point is it's so blatantly obvious they have to trade him.
02:19It's kind of, like, crazy to think.
02:21Is this a sign they're not trading him?
02:23Yes.
02:24How could you be negotiating with other teams and risk him blowing up?
02:28You're waiting for the other team to come and give you the sweetheart offer
02:33minutes before the trade deadline.
02:36But until then, business as usual, Tarek, take the mound.
02:41You do understand that that is the risk-reward quotient is all out of whack there.
02:45I am.
02:45Man, first of all, please know, I agree with you.
02:49I agree that it's one of the dumbest things that you could do if you're going to trade him.
02:57Because if anything happens, a ball ricochets off of his foot, his ankle, hits him in the hand.
03:03Like, he has to sit out and he's going to miss time.
03:06You've killed any value that you have for him.
03:08But this also says, and if you look at all the different pieces, Mike, they've told you.
03:15He's saying, I want you to buy.
03:17I think this team can win the World Series.
03:19They're showing you without saying, hey, we're going to put him out there.
03:23Not only is he going to pitch five innings, we're going to have him out there throwing seven innings,
03:27which is like a complete game to Tarek Scoble because he doesn't go normally that many innings.
03:33They're saying we're going for it.
03:35So, yes, both things can be true.
03:39I think you're right.
03:41They need to move him along with all the other people.
03:44But they have been seduced by that number four.
03:48Four games out of the wild card.
03:49We can do this.
03:52You see, David?
03:53I do.
03:54And I feel bad.
03:55David, you want to say something?
03:58Because all I keep hearing as you're talking is, now we're losing our comp pick.
04:04Now it's going to be a fourth round selection.
04:06Because if they're going for it while keeping him, we're going to be over the threshold.
04:12This is a disaster.
04:14You have to.
04:17I was talking with Corbin.
04:18David, you need to take the Hyman Roth approach.
04:21Oh, boy.
04:22This is where I'm at.
04:23Bruno, show everybody the cake.
04:25Small pieces.
04:26A smaller piece.
04:27When I get back from vacation, much like in the movie, in the morning, I will know if I have
04:33a partner or I do not.
04:34I will have a team or I do not.
04:36You cannot be emotionally engaged in this.
04:39See, instead, the Tigers will have you arrested at the airport.
04:43I am emotionally involved because I want them to do the right thing.
04:48I think the right thing is to trade Scooboo, but you can't pitch him tomorrow.
04:53Talking with Corbin, anything can happen.
04:57If I see him stretching his arm out and I'm wondering what is going on with his elbow, I don't
05:02want to even wonder that.
05:03Because I want him traded.
05:05This is a disaster.
05:07This is bad.
05:08Or is it a declaration?
05:09Oh, please no.
05:11Did they just drop their beanbag on the table and tell you we ain't trading him?
05:16There's no reason to play him tomorrow unless you're trying to push some daiquiris.
05:20There's no reason to start him tomorrow because you should be actively trying to trade him.
05:25You know what you don't do when you're actively trying to trade somebody?
05:28Play somebody.
05:29I feel like at least half of my bet is there.
05:33Remember, they're not going to trade.
05:35They're not going to sell or buy.
05:37Listen, I got your five lunch.
05:39No, no, no.
05:40Because they have been telling you without telling you for the last couple of weeks.
05:45And this is the final clue.
05:47If you can't see this.
05:49It was Professor Plum in the library with a wrench.
05:53Right.
05:53Now you just need Scooby-Doo and the gang to pull the mask off.
05:57It's actually Scott Boris.
05:58It was old man Hanley the whole time.
06:05We'll get to the people.
06:06I'm pumped up.
06:07People want to talk about it.
06:08You want to hear me yell.
06:09No, I told you what I think is right.
06:12But I ain't got nothing to do with predictive measure because I've been saying for months.
06:15I only have the shops to trade them.
06:17I want to be wrong.
06:18I will throw a party like none other if they sell.
06:21But this?
06:22I think this was the nail in the coffin.
06:24I think this is what this broke people.
06:27Like, no.
06:28I think deep down, they were crossing their fingers and hoping that Mike was going to be correct.
06:33He ain't going to be out there.
06:34They told you the day before.
06:36Let's just take the suspense away.
06:38Guys, he's pitching.
06:39You got to hope he catches some bad tamales or something that's praying to the porcelain god.
06:43I don't know.
06:44A little visine?
06:45Anything.
06:45In the water?
06:46Whatever, man.
06:47Nothing.
06:47I don't want to see anything bad happen to him.
06:49But, you know, maybe he just needs some toilet time.
06:51You can't pitch tomorrow.
06:52That's crazy.
06:54Can you imagine?
06:55Hold on.
06:56Everybody close your eyes once you visualize something here for a minute.
06:59Oh, boy.
07:00I won't even be specific.
07:02Okay.
07:02But, you know that little soundbite we played from the movie?
07:06The little monkey where he's like, oh, no.
07:09Okay.
07:09Tomorrow.
07:12Grabs his arm after a pitch.
07:14Tomorrow.
07:15Liner off the dome.
07:17Tomorrow.
07:18Blows out running to first base to cover a ball.
07:21Collision.
07:23And what's the storyline then?
07:30Oh, you think you're trading Scoobo, huh?
07:33No.
07:34Your storyline will be, okay, Scoobo will miss his next couple of starts for the Tigers.
07:43Yeah.
07:44He'll miss his next couple of starts for the Tigers.
07:47Let's talk about it next.
07:48Is it a declaration they're not trading him?
07:50Or are they bat bleep crazy?
07:52Or what do you make of it?
07:53Outside of pushing a few daiquiris.
07:55Explain why Scoobo's on the mound tomorrow.
07:57They planted their flag today.
08:00AJ said, give me the flag.
08:02Woo!
08:03He was out there like Baker Mayfield in Columbus.
08:08That's fantastic.
08:10I have nothing else to add.
08:1197-1.
