00:19The DPP noted that the case has attracted widespread public attention, fueled in part by video footage shared extensively on
00:26social media and reports carried by news organizations.
00:30However, he stressed that the matter has entered a judicial system and must now be determined through the courts.
00:38He reminded the public that criminal charges are allegations only and do not amount to proof of guilt.
00:44According to the DPP, every accused person is presumed innocent unless until a court finds otherwise after considering the evidence.
00:53The DPP said his office has a constitutional duty to safeguard the integrity of criminal proceedings and ensure that neither
01:01the prosecution nor the defense is deprived of a fair hearing.
01:05He warned against statements, commentary, or publications that could influence potential witnesses, affect public perception of evidence, or otherwise interfere
01:15with the administration of justice.
01:17While acknowledging the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of press, the DPP emphasized that those rights carry responsibilities.
01:26The DPP also reminded media houses and social media users that the law provides mechanisms to address publications that interfere
01:35with the course of justice.
01:37He warned that persons who engage in such conduct could expose themselves to contempt proceedings.
01:43As the matter progresses through the courts, Gaspard said the facts must ultimately be tested before a judge and determined
01:51according to law.
