Devesh Maraj, attorney at law, expressed concerns over the safety of citizens stating that crime
00:06
is a prevalent issue despite the best efforts of law enforcement and other stakeholders.
00:11
He noted that many citizens now feel trapped in their own homes.
00:15
People no longer go to the basketball courts in the night because they are taken over by
00:20
gangs.
00:21
You're not seeing anybody playing small goal in a row that we used to do when we were younger.
00:27
The main issue is crime.
00:31
Houses not only have barbed wires around in certain areas, they have double bulletproofing,
00:37
they have camera systems, they have electronic locks, and you are living within your house
00:43
in a state of paranoia, a state of fear, not knowing when you will be hit next.
00:51
Maraj highlighted that crime is not only stifling social development, but also economic growth.
00:58
We know small and medium businesses in Toronto, people are closing early, bars, restaurants.
01:06
Less people are coming out to participate in the services offered by these businesses.
01:14
So people are being put out of work.
01:16
People are spending less.
01:19
People are not coming out.
01:20
I mean, you have, of course, the big parties and so on, which people are still going to.
01:26
But throughout the country, the social and economic development is being stifled, brothers
01:33
and sisters.
01:34
Maraj urged the authorities to step up its action to ensure the safety and security of
01:39
the people of TNT.
