Rob Long makes a massive comparison, likening Samuel Basallo to Astros superstar Yordan Alvarez. Does the kid have that kind of ceiling? The Big Bad Morning Show breaks down why Basallo is more than just a "hot" rookie and why his plate discipline makes him a cornerstone for the O's.
Transcript
00:00Basayo is just, talking about somebody at 21 years old, boy, he belongs, man.
00:05Wow.
00:06And the crazy thing about him is, you know, people say he's hot.
00:10I don't think he's hot.
00:11I think this is who he is.
00:11I think this is who he is.
00:12Yeah, I agree.
00:13Yeah.
00:14He's not hot.
00:15He's just being Samuel Basayo right now.
00:18Yeah.
00:19I mean, he's had some 0-4 games.
00:22He's had some games where he had multiple hits.
00:25He's just steady Eddie.
00:27I mean, if you look at what he does, he doesn't have.
00:29I think the most 0-4 games he's had was two back-to-back the entire month.
00:34And that's it.
00:35He has a lot of power.
00:37He does.
00:38He does.
00:39He's up to, what, 267 right now?
00:42OPS of 810.
00:44Fastest catcher to, what did he say, over?
00:46If you take the games last year, he'd have 12 home runs.
00:48Fastest to reach that.
00:49Like, there's all these smaller things that he's doing that you don't consider him records or anything,
00:54but you're like, over the last month, he's hitting this.
00:57It just looks like everything's coming into form.
00:59I don't know if he's ultimately going to be a guy that hits for a high average.
01:03Time will tell.
01:03But I know the power's going to be there.
01:05I'll tell you who I think he is.
01:06I think he's Jordan Alvarez.
01:08I think if you look at who and what Jordan Alvarez is in Houston, I think that's Sam Welbesai.
01:14He's just got to show me that he can hit lefties the way that Jordan knows.
01:16Right.
01:17Because that's a big difference.
01:18Because he and Kyle Tucker, I've never seen guys that hit lefties the way they do being left-handed.
01:23I think he's one of those guys, Ed, that says, I don't have to hit home runs.
01:28I'll go the other way if that's what you want me to do.
01:30But if you give me a cookie like you did last night, I'm going to hit it over the right
01:33field porch.
01:34Yeah.
01:35And you know what?
01:36He can hit it over the left field porch, too, with that power.
01:38Yeah.
01:38If you get the right pitch.
01:39So he can go the other way, all the way.
01:42You know what's great is that the Yankees didn't sign him when we got him.
01:45So every time he goes up there, you know, they had him.
01:48They drafted him or whatever.
01:49They had the deal done and it fell through because of something else.
01:52And then the Orioles end up getting him.
01:53And now that he's here, like that's one that's one that you regret.
01:57I don't know if you've seen this before.
01:58There was like some of the guys that were drafted and went back.
02:01And I'm trying to remember what team it was.
02:03I was watching a game.
02:04They had four players that they drafted that turned out to be just absolute stud superstars.
02:09And they didn't sign two of them.
02:10And then they went elsewhere and then obviously had the success they've had.
02:13The great thing about it is he's the first guy to come out of that academy in the Dominican Republic.
02:19And a lot of goodwill because he comes up early.
02:22And it was 20, 21 when he came up.
02:26On top of that, you give him the extension.
02:28And while we think that's a cheap extension, folks in the Dominican Republic don't believe that's a cheap extension.
02:33They don't understand what it means.
02:35You're a kid playing baseball in the DR.
02:36You see that.
02:37You're like, okay.
02:38And you give him that guaranteed money up front.
02:41The bonus they gave him up front.
02:42I just think it's goodwill for them in the Dominican Republic.
02:47He doesn't have to do what Tatis did then.
02:50And by the way, the Tatis loan.
02:51I'll be talking about this in my shovel, believe it or not.
02:54You know, it wasn't for his first contract.
02:56It's the first 25 years.
02:58Like his 25 years, they get 10% of it.
03:01I don't think this is done.
03:02No.
03:03It's crazy, man.
03:05Wait a minute.
03:06It's for the first part?
03:08When he signed, they get 10% over the next 25 years of what he makes is what I thought
03:13the thing that I had read said.
03:16So let me look it up.
03:17So why are they saying he only owes $34 million?
03:20Now, because that's all he's signed for.
03:21I mean, when his contract's up, he signs a new one.
03:23I think they get 10% of that, too.
03:24Oh, hey.
03:25I mean, if that's what you agreed to, that's what you agreed to.
03:27But nonetheless, I think the key also, one of the keys with the Orioles, Ed, starting pitching.
03:32We forget about what Braddish did in that 13-inning game.
03:35But he did it.
03:36You know, six innings, give it up, one earned run.
03:39Last night, Jeremy's been saying this since they've traded for him.
03:42Shane Boz looked like the guy that Jeremy told us that he could be.
03:45Yeah.
03:46Yep.
03:47Against his old team.
03:48So he looked great.
03:49He just looked great.
03:51Long in the game.
03:52Shut them down.
03:53I have a lot of faith in him.
03:56You do?
03:57I do.
03:57In Boz, yeah.
03:59Because there are a lot of people who were just complaining about the money.
04:01You signed him for all his money.
04:03He's not doing this.
04:04I don't.
04:05And I said it to you before, and I'll say it again.
04:06And for a fan base that complains about their team spending money, when they finally spend
04:10money, they act like they just spent their money.
04:12Yeah.
04:13All the time.
04:14All the time.
04:14I find they just have something to complain about.
04:16Like, if you don't have faith in the guy, what fun is this for anybody?
04:20I do.
04:20I have a lot of faith in him.
04:21I think he's going to be real.
04:22I think he is good.
04:23I think he's going to be even better.
04:25Yeah, I think so.
04:26410-583-1057 is the number.
04:29Now, this month, we're not out of the month right now, but this month alone, Colton Couser is
04:34batting only 231, but his OPS for the month of May, 795 with three home runs, 11 RBI.
04:43Do you think, Jeremy, that he's coming out of it?
04:45I hope so.
04:46I mean, look, he's a, from what I've seen from the short time he's been here, it seems like
04:50he's very streaky.
04:52Yeah.
04:52Gets on these hot runs, and then all of a sudden, it's a cold run.
04:55Like, right now, the dangerous thing is when guys are playing with confidence, and I think
05:00he has a little bit.
05:00I think watching him laugh about some of the comments that, who is it, the Tigers broadcast
05:05was making about him.
05:07I don't know if you saw this in a post-game interview.
05:09Was it foul ball?
05:10Whatever.
05:10He was on one of the shows talking about it, and he was laughing.
05:13He's like, yeah, I heard what they said about me, and he just focused in on what he's doing.
05:16So, I think he's got some confidence now, and hopefully this is something he can build
05:19off of.
05:20And by the way, the numbers you gave out, if he's hitting towards the bottom of your lineup,
05:23I don't have a problem.
05:24The 795 OPS?
05:25I have no problem with those numbers at all.
05:27The one thing that does concern me about that, though, the one thing that concerns
05:31me, he has three extra base hits this month.
05:33He doesn't have any doubles.
05:35Just home runs.
05:36Just only home runs.
05:37That does concern me.
05:39I'd like to see him get some doubles to add to that.
05:41If he had two doubles, his OPS would be 825 or something like that.
05:46I mean, so, just get a couple of other base hits, extra base hits, other than home runs.
05:50But I think he's climbing out of that slump that he's been in.
05:54But just to let you know, in comparison, you know what his numbers were for the month
05:57of April?
05:58What?
06:00163 batting average with a 438 OPS.
06:04That's huge.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Huge.
06:06So, this has been a good month for him.
06:09410-583-1057 is the number.
06:12Shovels at 845, but on the other side, more Orioles baseball with Mike Bordick up next
06:17on The Fan.
