00:00Everybody has given the Ravens a high grade for this year's draft.
00:04I've seen nothing lower than a B. Have you guys seen anything lower than a B?
00:07No, but I feel like that's, isn't that like happens, it happens every year where they,
00:12I mean, it's like, oh, it's the Ravens? Oh yeah, let's just give them an A or a B.
00:15They're always good.
00:15So, and having said that, I don't understand how this year's draft, Ed,
00:22would quiet the haters when, in my opinion, Eric DaCosta gets at least a B on every draft.
00:28Well, because you'll never quiet the haters.
00:31That's right.
00:32That's the problem.
00:33So it won't quiet them because there's always a controversy.
00:38Look, I'm very happy with the draft because I think they filled the biggest need in the first round.
00:43First pick, first round, that's what they needed.
00:46They needed an offensive lineman.
00:47They got the best one in the draft.
00:49The problem is you're going to have people calling in saying we could use, we needed Sadiq.
00:54We needed Bain.
00:55These guys were available.
00:56I mean, the Buccaneers went right after the Ravens, right?
00:58They picked Bain.
01:00So, I mean, this is what you're going to hear.
01:02And, you know, guard is kind of a faceless position.
01:06So I think it's tough to quantify it unless you're, you know,
01:10you're analyzing like McKusick or Pro Football Focus or the Ravens.
01:16And, you know, it's just not going to satisfy some people because it just,
01:19and the key word here is haters.
01:21Haters are haters.
01:22They're going to hate.
01:22Haters don't need a reason.
01:24No, they don't.
01:24I mean, they just, all they needed is a platform.
01:27Thanks, Taylor Swift.
01:29They're going to hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.
01:30Jeremy, what makes this draft, in your opinion, a winner for DaCosta?
01:35I mean, I think it's the talent that they bring in.
01:38You're looking at, you know, I know so many people look at needs all the time,
01:41and it's important to fill those needs.
01:44But when you're using something to force something in and say, oh, we got to get this.
01:48I'm like, if they didn't like the centers that were available when they were picking at that spot,
01:53I'm happy they didn't pick one.
01:54Because to me, it's a wasted pick if you're going out grabbing something saying, oh, we really need this.
01:58And then he plays and you're like, oh, we didn't need this.
02:00You know?
02:01We need one, but not this one.
02:02Yeah.
02:02And again, I'm sure they have an idea of which direction they want to go in.
02:05And maybe they feel comfortable with somebody that's already on the roster that we're not talking about.
02:09It's the one thing we're not privy to.
02:11But with the draft, I mean, you hit a home run and get in Vega.
02:14This guy, like getting comparisons to Quentin Nelson, anybody that gets comparisons to him,
02:19give me that player on my team.
02:21This guy is just an absolute road grader, and you need help along the offensive line.
02:25I think what Wyman said was so true.
02:27I mean, it's like getting socks for Christmas, drafting an offensive lineman.
02:31You know you need it.
02:31It's just not sexy.
02:33Now, Joe, why did they not get the centers that were on the board?
02:37So Jake Slaughter and Logan Jones were the two people that they had on their board.
02:43But Zion Young was above them in the second round.
02:47They thought about trading back in.
02:49Right.
02:50But Joe, sorry.
02:51Didn't they say they had him rated second overall?
02:54That was their second rated player, yes.
02:55And then Logan Jones and Slaughter right behind him.
02:58They thought about trading back up to get him,
03:00but that would have been a third and a fourth round pick they'd have to give up somewhere to get
03:04him.
03:04So, Ed, that is the definition of best player available, not reaching for need.
03:10It's exactly what they did.
03:12And as I said, I am still good with it.
03:14I think it's exactly what they should have done.
03:18I like Zion.
03:19I think Ione was the right pick for the first pick.
03:22I just do.
03:23Did you guys hear what DaCosta said?
03:26Like there was a, I don't know if it was an interview.
03:28Because I know, I think it was Mike Silver.
03:30Is that who it was from the NFL Network?
03:32One of the guys that was there in the draft room with them and did a report on it.
03:34And DaCosta was talking about how many other teams are now kind of emulating what the Ravens do.
03:39They're modeling their system after it.
03:41It's like, hey, we're going to take best player available.
03:44Now, there's going to be certain situations where two players are close and the need becomes more important.
03:49But they're going by their boards and staying true to it.
03:53And I think you have to, to a certain extent.
03:55I think, you know, if you have two players that are very close, but you have a great need for
04:00one,
04:00you don't feel like you can go out and get in a free agency.
04:03Yeah, you may have to move some things around.
04:05Or if the Ravens felt they were really desperate at that position,
04:08I think they would have given up a third and a fourth to get back in the second round.
04:12But I'm glad they didn't do that.
04:13Because I think they did really well with the rest of the draft.
04:16Let's go to New York and get D.A.
04:17What's up, D.A.?
04:18Hey, what's up, big guy?
04:20How much, man?
04:20Let me impress with the draft.
04:23I think this is the first time in a very long time where I believe that the Ravens drafted
04:29from a standpoint of where they feel like they can out-steam you and out-execute you.
04:35And opposed to just the historical play like a Ravens mantra.
04:40When we left that band in the hands of an ecleptic, Marlon Humphrey and a loose Ronnie Stanley.
04:48That play like a Ravens thing has been going a long time ago.
04:52Haven't had the personnel or even the mentality for a while.
04:56But I do believe that they centered on with the coach's mentor and the O2 that, you know what?
05:04We can get players and get personnel where our team and our coaching and our development can win games now.
05:14I mean, look, we've talked about it, the way that they've gone about this.
05:18And, you know, even pointing out the couple of times that they've taken two tight ends in the same draft
05:23and how it's worked out for them.
05:24And the odd thing about the second guy usually be better than the first.
05:27But, yeah, I mean, look, I think you have to like the direction they're going in.
05:31And Rob just went over it.
05:32The AFC North, you can make a case that none of these other teams are trending upwards.
05:36And that's not a – I'm not trying to totally dismiss Cincinnati.
05:39I know they're a good team.
05:40But it's still – if they have that front office, I can't put them anywhere in a range of going
05:46up or trending up.
05:46I want to push back a little bit, though.
05:48When you go into recruiting or drafting with the mindset that you're going to out-scheme people, I think you're
05:55hustling backwards.
05:57Rick Neuheiser once told me the X's and O's mean nothing without the Henrys and Joes.
06:03Vinny Serrato told me a story years ago.
06:05He said when they first got to know the name, Lou Holtz went with that mindset.
06:11We got great coaches.
06:12We're going to out-coach these guys.
06:13We're going to do this.
06:14We're going to do that.
06:15And they went to Alabama, and they got run out the building.
06:19And they were on the bus, and Vinny said – Lou Holtz looked at him and said, we got to
06:24go get some players.
06:26I mean, you can out-scheme when the talent is even.
06:31Again, if the talent is not – I would hate to think that Eric DaCosta went into the draft thinking,
06:38well, we can just out-scheme people.
06:39No, I want Eric DaCosta to go get better players.
06:42And I'm not saying he didn't do that.
06:44I just don't believe that that's Eric DaCosta's mindset in a draft, that my coaches can out-scheme people.
06:51Well, no.
06:52I mean, you can, but again, that counts or it matters when you have talent.
06:58Yes.
06:58You know, because, you know, when you get to the certain level or you get to the postseason, when everyone
07:03is pretty much on equal footing, that's when it really matters.
07:06That's when coaching matters.
07:07Yeah.
07:07Yeah, I mean, if my guys are as good as your guys, now it's a chess match.
07:13But if your guys are that much better than my – I'm going to tell you something, man, and please
07:17don't take this the wrong way,
07:20but if Morgan University, who has a great head coach, goes down and plays Tennessee, that great coaching means nothing.
07:30That's correct.
07:30That great coach, he can't scheme his team into that game.
07:36You can go – Mike Tyson once said, everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the face.
07:43What's the other thing he said to that one reporter?
07:45No, I'm not saying that.
07:47I'm going to blank you until you love me.
07:49How did it finish?
07:50That wasn't a report.
07:51I thought it was a fighter.
07:52No, that was a reporter.
07:53Yeah.
07:55No, I ain't saying that one.
07:56That's the most convoluted sentence I've ever heard in my life.
08:01I'm going to blank you until you love me, you blank.
08:05Yeah.
08:06Thanks, Mike.
08:07Oh, Mike Tyson.
08:09Spinal.
08:10I guess we're –
08:12Yeah, spinal, all right.
08:14NBA discussion, LeBron James said the comparison between he and Michael Jordan, eh, nobody cares.
08:20We'll talk about that at 845, but on the other side, we get stupid with Jeremy Kahn.
08:24Yeah, a couple things.
08:25We're going to talk about a Chick-fil-A employee that's accused of stealing $80,000,
08:29and what kind of scheme?
08:31Did you say mac and cheese?
08:32How the hell do you make $80,000 off of mac and cheese?
08:35And I came across this yesterday.
08:38The lead singer of Jamiroquois, his name's J.K., he used to date Winona Ryder.
08:43He told everyone the reason that he dumped Winona Ryder.
08:46I want to slap him in his face on that, and I think you guys might too.
08:50We'll see.
08:51But we're going to talk about this.
08:52It has to deal with body types and being too aggressively sexually.
08:58We'll talk about it next here on the show.
