Ryan Ripken breaks down the controversial baseline call that cost the Orioles a crucial double play against the Blue Jays. The guys dissect the umpire’s judgment, Gunnar Henderson's defensive play, and how the ruling shifted the entire game.

While the blown call hurts, Ripken looks at the silver lining: the Orioles' starting pitching staff is evolving right before our eyes. Ryan breaks down Shane Baz's arsenal, his explosive reactions, and why the pitching staff still has this team on a winning trajectory.

00:00he is ryan ripkin what's going on ryan what's going on guys happy monday happy monday and ryan
00:06you were in north of the border in canada in toronto i should say as the play unfolded
00:11your thoughts on the controversial play the double play that should have been but was not
00:16yesterday yeah so that was um you know uh a pretty eventful play that still people are talking about
00:27the interpretations on what it should have been so for those that are listening that didn't see the
00:32call sixth inning chopper up the middle ernie clement's running the second base and gunner
00:40is going towards them and for ernie to avoid a tag he does a little detour i think further than
00:49three
00:49feet out to the right and um uh the umpire doesn't rule him out of the baseline gunner gets you
00:58out
00:58at first it could have been a double play would have ended the inning and we know what happened
01:02and after that the blue jays kept it going with some two out rbis um so the rule is right
01:08you know
01:09you're gonna have three feet once you establish your running lane and then on top of it it's at
01:14the umpire's discretion so i'm just saying all that because at the umpire's discretion it is his
01:20judgment on why to make that play now having said that i don't agree with his judgment um because just
01:28how far ernie was running by the time to me that was an established uh base running lane you know
01:37if
01:37he had started this earlier in the process on ford and the ones that are saying oh gunner didn't attempt
01:43the tag enough that was the other reasoning you know gunner put out his glove and some people were
01:49trying again it was a judgment of well how much of an attempt was it but if you watch it
01:54in real time
01:55if gunner overextends to try to get ernie in my opinion it throws him off to try to get the
02:02out at
02:02first so i don't think he gets the out at first if he has to overextend on the play and
02:07uh i thought
02:08it was a missed opportunity um by the umpire i i still was that a real quote after the game
02:14about like gentlemen gentlemen yes yes that is that is wild uh like i still i still i'm having
02:24a hard time processing i was getting on the plane yesterday and i'm going like that we live in a
02:29world where there's ai there's no way he said that there's no way um but that that's like how i
02:36feel i mean
02:37and here's the reality of the play um was it a make or break call for the orioles on the
02:42day
02:42no because if gunner makes the play before uh where he had his error we're probably not talking about
02:48this if shane boz makes another pitch or two we're not talking about this and the seventh inning when
02:54the orioles have first and second no outs with the chance to tie the game get back in it they
03:00don't
03:00execute and and they lose the game right so there's other parts but was that a massive call
03:07absolutely and the biggest thing is you want to get calls right and personally i don't think they
03:12got the call right yes correct and that's exactly what i want to continue this instead of i was going
03:17to talk about something else but now that you're talking about this um the whole purpose is to get
03:22the call right and you're correct i mean gunner bobble the ball and you know so and we've had other
03:27issues but that is the players play on the field that can't be corrected in hindsight they made a
03:33mistake you know they made an error as it's aptly named but when officials do things like this and
03:38that guy that guy was taking an exit off a highway that wasn't even close i mean he he ran
03:44like you're
03:44completely out of the baseline and wasn't called and yet they called on the jackson holiday so you
03:50know it wasn't evenly applied and my my point is now that we have the ability to review things
03:56in all four major sports because i think the officiating in the nba finals has been terrible i think
04:01it's been bad in the nhl during the stanley cup playoff um it is but they've allowed too much
04:05violence you know and shouldn't they have something where it's like even i feel like they're afraid to
04:11embarrass their officials when they make these egregious mistakes are you happy with the way that
04:16they're handling this or not or should it be improved well i'm like this is with this play and just
04:23how the
04:23interpretation of the rules like again it goes down to discretion so even if they went replay here
04:28you know i don't think that they overturned whatever call was on the field because the umpire
04:35they could they could twist it the way that they want to right because it's not like uh which i
04:41still
04:42think with replays by the way and there's the play with gunner and boston on a ball to first
04:46uh i believe what what it was and i thought that he beat it out and you know it wasn't
04:51overturned yeah
04:52you know so like there's on those plays where you feel like it's it's very very clear on an outer
05:01safe
05:02call that should have no gray area but when it comes to these calls there always is going to be
05:08a gray
05:08area because although you can go and look in the replay and slow it down and go hey or anyone
05:13to take
05:14a pit stop to right field you know you it it's still at some point i can see the argument
05:20of why
05:21he's saying well he was trying to avoid the tag which he has a right to avoid and where did
05:28he in
05:29their mind started and is and is that three feet can you measure three feet i mean if you want
05:34to get
05:34that analytical mlb is not going to do that so that that's to me where the gray area is um
05:40and above all
05:41you're right the jackson later in the game jackson did get tagged which i wish that they had called
05:45it that way but the part was later on the umpire goes no he's way out of there no no
05:50players just
05:51want consistency yes consistent results and and that's the part that's frustrating for the team is
05:58um again it was a big was it a big call absolutely um i just don't know if you go
06:05review on that that
06:06that's going to change anything unfortunately hey ryan looking at the the situation we kind of
06:11talked about it did they leave shane boz in too long after that i mean he's been on one and
06:15he's
06:15looked great um what are your thoughts about just the turnaround of the starting pitching and we got
06:19bassett today coming off that back injury yeah i mean so to answer your question i was fine leaving
06:26him in i honestly after that whole emotion and even on the broadcast i was saying there's a lot of
06:32emotions frustrations you got to try to settle back in you know take a deep breath maybe you have a
06:37mound visit there to say hey let's let's let's let's uh bear down i know that was that was that
06:45was uh that that ticked you off and rightfully so i got i got over under 14 or 15 uh
06:51f-bombs
06:53and so and so but in baseball as we know you got to try to then get take your emotion
07:00out of the game
07:01because you got to go make some pitches and i thought boz was great i think the starters have been
07:04great um and the biggest thing that i've noticed with each one of them is they're finding out how
07:11their stuff plays to their advantage i think maybe early on you're trying to use your pitches and maybe
07:17you don't have a feel of one what works and what doesn't um and shane boz the big thing that
07:23i saw
07:23what worked is he's he was filling up the strike zone number one and when you have good stuff you
07:28throw
07:29strikes better things can happen and i thought he was mixing his arsenal pitches better his he set up
07:35his fastball better with a change-up that he didn't throw as much earlier in the season uh which
07:41i think then ultimately makes his knuckle curve better and and same thing with he stopped throwing
07:47cutters to lefties and only throwing it to righties and so i think that's the evolution for the orioles
07:52pitchers so despite how it all ended where they had that rally in the six for the blue jays the
07:58starting pitching as a whole i thought kyle bradis still pitched well just a bad sequence um with two
08:05outs that led to the runs but this orioles staff if they continue to do this yeah the trajectory of
08:12this team will continue to be better just uh we would be talking a lot different light too the orioles
08:18would be coming back from toronto winners of uh four or six on this road trip instead of
08:22coming back at three and three ryan ripkin from the ryan ripkin show ryan how how can we find you
