Transcript
00:00So, like, overall, like, good, you know, you take away some good things.
00:06Give me your thoughts.
00:07But I really felt like the incident that happened between Wilson and Ward,
00:11when one's going out, one's coming in, and the ball drops in,
00:14he kind of unraveled a little bit, but then got it back together.
00:19Yeah.
00:20Got to make that play.
00:21Well, I mean, it's, I'm assuming Wesson didn't hear him saying,
00:26I got it, I got it, I got it, because you did see,
00:28I know they talked about it on the broadcast, where infielder,
00:32maybe I have it backwards, infielder's supposed to go high,
00:35outfielder's supposed to go low if he's diving.
00:38That way you try to avoid some of the contact, but we didn't have that.
00:45We're going to get into the defense, because I thought, let me go back to the young man.
00:50I mean, that may have just been a tough play and not defensive issues, but.
00:53Let me go back to Trey Gibson.
00:54Listen, I thought his composure overall was good.
00:59I'll be first to admit to you, I was highly critical of him getting the start,
01:03his first start in Yankee Stadium.
01:06Not highly critical of him starting against the Yankees,
01:07because you got to pitch against them eventually.
01:09But you basically told that kid, hey man, go to Yankee Stadium and get Aaron Judge out.
01:14That's what we want you to do.
01:16And I was, I didn't like it.
01:17I thought it was a bad decision.
01:18I would much rather not DFA Suarez, throw him in there, sacrifice him.
01:25He's been there before.
01:26He's pitched there before.
01:27Let him do it.
01:28But I think now, in hindsight, now that he got it out of the system,
01:33you know, the results weren't that bad.
01:36Four and two-thirds innings, three runs on four hits.
01:39He did give up two home runs.
01:42And I'm not saying, oh my gosh, this kid is going to be a future ace.
01:45I don't know.
01:48But am I guilty of thinking maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be?
01:51Is that the way I am?
01:52That's fine, especially after the way that the first two days went.
01:55Right.
01:55And if you're looking at the, I'm assuming if somebody didn't watch the game
01:58and went and looked at the final score going, oh, what happened here?
02:01When actually he was fine, it was the bullpen that blew up late.
02:04It wasn't him.
02:05And as I was saying to you, I know this is more about Gibson.
02:07And how frustrating is it to, I've talked about this before,
02:11when you're facing upper echelon pitchers, sometimes it's not about beating them.
02:15Sometimes it's about outlasting them.
02:16Yeah.
02:17And then you get to a point where Freed doesn't have it, can't throw a strike,
02:20can't find his changeup.
02:21And we bail him out.
02:22And, yeah, we end up grounding into a double play with, you know,
02:26we had the, you had a chance to have a huge inning,
02:27and it feels like the Orioles don't have a huge inning unless they've already
02:31had a big lead, meaning up 6-1 late, and here comes a five spot.
02:35Yeah.
02:35Your thoughts on Andrew Kittredge, though?
02:37I mean, that wasn't good at all yesterday.
02:41I mean, I like the makeup.
02:42I like what, you know, what he's done in the past,
02:45and I still think there's something there, but that didn't look good.
02:48He's had a couple of those.
02:49Even in the minor leagues, he had one where it's just, hmm.
02:53Wasn't it the first runs he's given up this year?
02:57I don't know.
02:58Is it the first runs he's given up?
02:59I think it was.
03:00Because I know he got beat up in the minors before he came back up.
03:02Yeah, I think they were the first runs.
03:05Earn runs, I'm assuming this is, because I think he's given up runs.
03:09Earn runs, yeah.
03:10I mean, maybe inherited runs, maybe, yeah.
03:14But I think earned runs, those were his first.
03:18He didn't look good at all yesterday.
03:20No.
03:21I thought, you know, Anil Cano looked pretty sharp.
03:26But Kittredge was basically on his own, but that gave away.
03:31Well, and again, like, going back to what they have set up here,
03:36it's, you and I were talking about this before the show.
03:39We thought they had a ton of starting pitching.
03:41It's like, how are they going to figure out six for five, right?
03:43And you got two guys in the minor leagues that could be a part of it.
03:46Yesterday was May 3rd.
03:48They've had 10 starters.
03:5010.
03:50Yesterday was May 3rd.
03:51Yeah.
03:53Around a month and a half into the season.
03:54Or we used 10.
03:5610 starters.
03:57That includes Gibson and Suarez starting games?
03:59I didn't know that number until you just told me this morning.
04:01I mean, think about it.
04:02Because you've caught up, right?
04:03You've had Brandon Young, who we didn't envision starting, Cade Povich.
04:06You had six for five, right?
04:09And then you had in Brandon Young, Cade Povich, Albert Suarez, and then now Trey Gibson.
04:15That's 10 starters that you've had already this year.
04:18I'm counting them up now.
04:20Yeah.
04:22Braddish, Boz, Rodgers, Bassett, Povich, Brandon Young, Dean Kramer, Trey Gibson.
04:33Zach Eflin.
04:33Zach Eflin.
04:34That's nine.
04:35No, there should be 10.
04:37All right.
04:39Braddish, Boz, Rodgers, Bassett, Povich, Brandon Young, Dean Kramer.
04:50Suarez.
04:51Trey Gibson.
04:54Suarez.
04:54Oh, Suarez is not on here.
04:56That's right.
04:56There you go.
04:56Yeah.
04:57There you go.
04:57Thank you very much.
04:58410-583.
04:59He got a spot start.
05:00105-7 is the number.
05:02Yeah.
05:02Baltimore's Big Bad Morning Show.
05:04Wait a minute, Suarez.
05:04Is he on here?
05:05He did get a start.
05:06His stats should at least be on here, but they're not.
05:09Did he have an opener when he started?
05:11Maybe that's what we're...
05:13Let's go to Dave in Salisbury.
05:14What's up, Dave?
05:15Come on, Dave.
05:16Good morning.
05:17Thanks for taking the call today.
05:18I just want to talk about the general manager of the Orioles.
05:21You know, he was talking about, you know, how good we're going to have this liftoff.
05:26You know, I think maybe it was even last year.
05:28Here we're going to have a liftoff and the Orioles are...
05:30Your phone is bad, Dave.
05:32Dave, your phone is bad, bro.
05:33I think you got an incoming call.
05:35Yeah, I mean, but this guy, the biggest liar and general manager...
05:39Dave, what did he say?
05:41He was just calling Mike Elias the biggest liar.
05:44Okay.
05:44Dave, your phone, man.
05:45Cutting off real bad.
05:46And by the way, no.
05:48Suarez does not have a start this year.
05:50That's what I'm saying.
05:51Did they have an opener before him?
05:52Because he did.
05:53Technically, he was a starter.
05:55You know what I mean?
05:55Well, you get credit for the start if you're an opener.
05:57If you start the opener.
05:58Then there has to be somebody else.
06:00Yeah, he's not...
06:02He has six games, no starts.
06:07And I believed in you.
06:09I trusted you.
06:10I don't think I'm wrong.
06:11Trusted you, Jeremy Giles.
06:13I don't think I'm wrong.
06:15Do you think the issues right now that we're having with the Baltimore Orioles are...
06:23Let me see.
06:26...are based on badly putting together the roster or incompetently putting together the roster?
06:34No.
06:34I mean, look.
06:36If you looked at this lineup and what you thought you were going to have at the beginning of the
06:39year,
06:39you still haven't had any of that.
06:40You haven't had Jackson Holiday.
06:42You haven't had Jordan Westberg.
06:43And there are people that go, well, you got to plan for this stuff.
06:46I don't know any team that has starting second baseman and starting third baseman waiting in the minor leagues
06:51or waiting on their bench to come in and play.
06:53But, okay.
06:55Yeah, it hasn't gone the way you thought.
06:57Braddish and Rodgers, they haven't looked like we thought what we thought Braddish and Rodgers could be, right?
07:02Don't know what's going on with Braddish.
07:03He feels like he's got good stuff.
07:04He's hitting a lot of bats.
07:06He's walking some guys.
07:08Walks are up.
07:08It's frustrating.
07:10You're not getting...
07:11The out pitches aren't working.
07:13We had Trevor Rodgers get the two strikes on every single batter and not figure out how to get the
07:16third one.
07:18Bassett took a while to...
07:19Like, he finally had a good start and Boz finally had a good start.
07:22And you're hoping you can build off of it.
07:23And then you come into the weekend and here you are.
07:26Braddish has more strikeouts than innings pitch, but he also has 21 walks and 34 innings.
07:31It's not good.
07:32He had up five home runs already.
07:3519 earned runs.
07:36It's not what you expect from him with a 5.03 earned run average.
07:39No.
07:40Not at all.
07:41And again, like...
07:44You know, he's the only starting pitcher with more strikeouts than innings pitch.
07:48Really?
07:49Mm-hmm.
07:50Boz has 34 innings pitched, 29 strikeouts.
07:53Trevor Rodgers, 30 innings pitched, 27 strikeouts.
07:57Who else are we talking about here?
08:01Dean Kramer, 11 innings pitched only.
08:05Dean Kramer is up there.
08:06He has 16 strikeouts and 11 innings pitched, so he has two pitchers.
08:11Remember, he was that guy in the minors, though.
08:13Yeah.
08:15Well, he showed some signs of it in the minors.
08:18As I'm looking at some of the other stuff here, too, like...
08:21Ron Helsley's now out.
08:22It's just injury after injury after injury once again, though.
08:26I mean, you kind of wonder...
08:27Is there something else going on?
08:29Is there something deeper?
08:29I mean, you have to ask these questions when it keeps coming up, but...
08:32I mean, you're littered with injuries.
08:34But these are typical baseball injuries.
08:37Are we getting hamstrings?
08:39Are we getting...
08:40You know what I mean?
08:41These are typical baseball injuries.
08:43Just all happening to one team.
08:45It's still frustrating.
08:47It's frustrating, man.
08:48I...
08:49Ew.
