00:00And you can't play this game with doubt, and you can't play this game without knowing what you're doing.
00:05And so, you know, I know from a defensive standpoint, like, we should be the loudest, most crazy, obnoxious, communicating
00:13unit in the history of football.
00:15And that's the rookies doing that.
00:18And so I give credit to the coaches that they have those guys prepared to come out here and be
00:23able to be like that.
00:25That's really the standard that we're trying to create.
00:27When you communicate and you're on the same page and you know what you're doing, you've got a much better
00:31chance of being successful.
00:33So, and the whole idea is that when you do it over and over again, you do it here, you
00:37do it every play, that it doesn't matter if it's the first play of the season against whoever or in
00:44a game in December or in a game in February.
00:47That's the standard of how we operate, and we lead ourselves to success in those moments if we operate like
00:52that all the time.
00:52So that was Jesse Minter speaking Saturday, and you could hear some chatter on the field and those rare occasions
00:58where they were doing stuff while we were out there.
01:02And Jesse Minter was asked about it, and he goes, I want to be loud, obnoxious out there, you know,
01:08when we play.
01:11I know that cut stood out to you, Bone, and it leads us to what the Jesse Minter effect could
01:18be for this defense.
01:20Yeah, I got fired up seeing that quote on Twitter and then hearing it during the press conference.
01:26And look, Jesse Minter, rookie head coach, still, I don't know, finding his voice is the right way.
01:34But you hear a lot of coach speak, as you do with young coaches.
01:38But that quote kind of felt a little different to me.
01:41And I remember this clip kind of made its rounds on Twitter when the Ravens hired Jesse Minter when he
01:49was still at Michigan, and Michigan ended up winning.
01:51And he's going over to the Ohio State sideline and waving bye.
01:56Like, I want that at my head coach.
02:00And Jesse Minter, I think he's got a little some of that.
02:04Some ish to him.
02:05Yeah, when it comes to that.
02:06And I expect that to be reflected on the football field.
02:10But when you just look at Jesse Minter in his couple of years with the Chargers, he did more with
02:20less, which really gets me excited.
02:23Because the Chargers, they had the second lowest payroll of any defense in 2025.
02:29They were 14th in 2024.
02:32And that defense really flipped in one year.
02:39They were really poor in 2023.
02:42And then they were first in points per game.
02:45They went from 24th in points per game in 2023 to first in 2024.
02:49And last year, just looking at some stats where they were top five, like number one in defensive passer rating
02:56and red zone efficiency, total defense, pass defense, third down.
03:03I think we've all been high on Jesse Minter in terms of what he can do with this defense day
03:11one because he's done it at every level.
03:15I also want to remind people, Jesse Minter came to the Chargers with Jim Harbaugh after Brandon Staley was fired.
03:24Brandon Staley was a defensive coach.
03:26He got the Chargers head coaching job because of his work as a defensive coordinator.
03:30And his defense has stunk with the Chargers.
03:33And Jesse gets there.
03:34And as you point out, immediately starts turning things around.
03:38Now, I'm really excited to see him work with all of the young guys, in particular in the secondary, Nate
03:46Wiggins, Malachi Starks, especially because they're both really young players.
03:51Wiggins entering year three, Starks entering year two.
03:55Obviously, this pass rush needs to get better.
03:59But priority number one for Jesse Minter, and I'm sure he would say the same exact thing when it comes
04:06to the defense, they've got to be closers.
04:09They've got to be at their best when their best is needed.
04:11And that is in the fourth quarter.
04:14And he's got to change that narrative.
04:18And part of that is, going back to where we started, Ken, over-communicating.
04:23Like, you know, you think of all of the fourth quarter blown leads, and maybe not as much last year,
04:31but over, you know, since 2021, there were a lot of blown coverages that led to easy touchdowns.
04:36Look at the Buffalo game week one.
04:37Yeah, yeah, exactly.
04:38And that has to get cleaned up.
04:41And that's where it gets to being an obnoxious defense.
04:44And I think a defense that wants to punch the opposing offense in the mouth.
04:49Let's face it.
04:50And we talk a lot about play like a Raven and what does that mean?
04:53But the Ravens' defenses that were feared were, quite frankly, obnoxious.
04:58Yes, exactly.
04:58Like, the 2,000 Ravens were obnoxious.
05:02Tony Saragusa, young Ray Lewis.
05:05Chris McAllister.
05:05Chris McAllister.
05:06Those guys yapped.
05:08Terrell Suggs was obnoxious.
05:10He wasn't shy.
05:11No, like, that's...
05:13Now, I...
05:15Marcus Peters.
05:16Yeah, Marcus Peters was obnoxious.
05:17I love Marcus Peters.
05:19If Zion Young is a player, he's going to be obnoxious.
05:25Yes.
05:26You can see it already.
05:27Yeah.
05:28He just...
05:29He talks the talk.
05:30Now, hopefully, that translate...
05:33His play from Missouri translates to the NFL.
05:36And he's a player?
05:36Because he's going to be obnoxious.
05:38And I think that's some of the things that got me the most excited about not just Zion, but Vanga.
05:45Vanga, you know, right in his first press conference, no one's touching my quarterback.
05:49You're not getting to Lamar Jackson.
05:51Like, they need that.
05:53And you're wondering what this Jesse Minter vision is going to be, because Harvest was here since 2008.
06:02Yes, there's going to be some similarities.
06:04You continue to hear Play Like a Raven.
06:06But what is this new era of Play Like a Raven?
06:10What is this Jesse Minter slant to this next flight, to use their marketing slogan?
06:18I like what you're doing there, bud.
06:18Yeah, thank you.
06:19I'll say this, too.
06:21Zach Orr seems like a really good guy.
06:23Yeah.
06:23He was in over his head.
06:24He was in over his head for two years.
06:26You go from Zach Orr on defense to now Jesse Minter and Anthony Weaver, I just think the upgrade in
06:33coaching at the top of that staff is leaps and bounds better than it was a year ago.
06:39Without question, because this is, and we're all excited for Declan Doyle, because it's new, it's interesting.
06:45We have no idea what it's going to look like.
06:47You look to what Ben Johnson did or Sean Payton did, but what is it?
06:50We know what a Jesse Minter defense looks like.
06:53We know what an Anthony Weaver defense looks like.
06:56They're established.
06:57They've had success at the NFL level and college.
07:01Coming up next, we want to hear from the people.
07:04410-583-1057.
07:05Your takeaways from Minicam.
07:07You got to hear these guys talk on Saturday.
07:11Are you as excited as Bone is about some of the things that were said on Saturday?
07:15And also, obviously, the Orioles.
07:18Just a disastrous weekend in the Bronx.
07:20Just how bad is it in your mind?
07:22410-583-1057.
