00:00But that's Stark's talking about what he needs to improve upon in his sophomore season.
00:06And he showed flashes as a rookie, and he was generally considered to be, I'm going to say a steal
00:11for the Ravens,
00:12but a home run pick for them when they got him last year in the first round out of Georgia.
00:17He had his ups and downs, but you could see the potential there.
00:22Was he Ed Reed as a rookie? No.
00:25Will he ever be Ed Reed? That's tall ask.
00:27He's one of the greatest safeties to ever walk the face of the planet.
00:31But the ceiling is still very high for Malachi Starks.
00:35Yeah, and the thing where Malachi's talking to is you almost feel bad for him as a rookie
00:44because he's working with pros now, you know, and last year, I've said it a million times.
00:55I'm not a Zach Gore fan. I think he was in over his head.
00:58So I think all those guys suffered, you know, and Malachi's talking about he was thinking too much.
01:04And, you know, and Harv's always talked about that, playing fast.
01:08How do you play fast? You know what you're doing.
01:09You make it, you keep it simple, you know.
01:12And I keep going back to Jesse Minter with, why did Owey, what did you do with Owey to get
01:21him 11 sacks?
01:23We had to simplify some things for him, make it easier, you know.
01:27And Zach Orr could never figure that kind of stuff out.
01:33But, you know, and I was totally disappointed in Chuck Pagano.
01:37He was the secondary coach.
01:39And I...
01:40He was the safety blanket that we all thought was going to be there like Dean Pease was two years
01:45ago.
01:45No doubt. No doubt.
01:47And that was a total disappointment.
01:49And he hadn't coached secondary in years.
01:51You know, he'd been a head coach, a coordinator, all those things.
01:54So, yeah, it was a total disappointment.
01:56And that's why I think all these guys on defense are going to be so much better.
02:03They're going to be better coached.
02:05And I think led by Jesse Minter, I think that things will be simplified for each guy on what he
02:13can and can't do.
02:14And they'll put him in those positions to let them do.
02:17He got Owey $100 million.
02:19If Owey would have stayed here, what would he get?
02:22Minimum salary?
02:23You know, he went to got...
02:24Probably got what Ajabo got down in Miami.
02:30So, I'm excited about all the guys.
02:35You know, all the guys on defense, I'm excited.
02:38Because I'll be disappointed if they don't make a big jump.
02:42And again, not like Starks had a horrible season.
02:4584 tackles, two picks.
02:47You know, a couple of tackles for loss.
02:49So, the ceiling is still high.
02:51And he's paired up with, you know, one of the, arguably the best safety in the National Football League in
02:57Kyle Hamilton.
02:58And they brought the kid in from New England to bolster the back end of the defensive backfield as well.
03:04So, yeah, Malachi Starks.
03:06And, you know, he's a guy that self-reflecting, you know, didn't blame anyone else for what went wrong with
03:13the defense.
03:13But, you know, accountability is there, which is great.
03:16Now, learn from your mistakes.
03:18Learn from the new coaches.
03:20And move forward here.
03:21The new secondary coach by, well, P.J. Volker is the new safeties coach.
03:27And Mike Mickens.
03:29From Notre Dame.
03:30Is the defense, well, the pass game coordinator.
03:33Yeah.
03:33Secondary coach.
03:34And, Bob, the thing about it, because you mentioned the Hawkins kid who they got from New England, he stands
03:40out.
03:40He's good.
03:41And he's got really good ball skills.
03:43And he's six foot one.
03:44Whereas Washington was, what, 5'9"?
03:46You know?
03:47Yeah.
03:48So, he was a smaller guy.
03:50So, you got another bigger safety who's got good range and good ball.
03:55He's made plays out there.
03:56You know, being out there, what, a couple times has been a chance to see him and stuff.
04:01So, I think Hamilton is going to be like Derwin James.
04:07I mean, Derwin James just became the highest paid safety.
04:11He got, what, you know, like $100,000 more than Kyle.
04:15And they're going to use him.
04:17He's going to be used all over the field.
04:20Kyle will be.
04:21And the other two guys, you know, they'll do their thing in the safety.
04:24And I think I'll be disappointed if defense is not top ten.
04:30And I'll be disappointed.
04:32That's my expectation.
04:33Malachi Stark's certainly going to be part of that equation.
04:36You also heard him talking about on NFL Network the Max Crosby trade that wasn't.
04:42And eventually bringing in Trey Hendrickson, who he's had a chance to practice with over the last few weeks at
04:47OTAs and then at the voluntary camp about a month ago.
04:51So, he's familiar with him.
04:52But like everyone else, the Max Crosby trade was, that was like the big blockbuster news of that pre-agent
05:00period.
05:01Then it got nixed.
05:02And then, you know, Eric DaCosta kind of took it on the chin for, you know, oh, the Ravens are
05:08liars.
05:09And you can't trust him.
05:11Max Crosby's still in Vegas with the Raiders.
05:14And hopefully he has a successful, healthy career moving forward.
05:17But he's not ready to play football.
05:20Trey Hendrickson is.
05:21And he's been on the field and he'll probably be there again today.
05:25Yeah, Trey Hendrickson looks good.
05:26He's been there every day.
05:28And, you know, some of the rushes, I mean, the rushes I saw that he had against Ronnie Stanley.
05:34I mean, he's, Trey Hendrickson, he's got takeoff.
05:38He's got great bend, you know.
05:40And he has awareness.
05:44He has hands.
05:45He's smart.
05:46He's extremely smart.
05:47So, he's got every counter in the book, too.
05:50So, I think that's going to be a huge addition.
05:53We'll see how he plays the run.
05:56And, you know, if he can set the edge and play the run better, then he'll get a chance to
06:02probably even play more.
06:03But they'll have their rotation, you know, with Green and Hendrickson, you know, through there and Tavius Robinson and all
06:11those guys.
06:11You know, so, it'll be a pretty good rotation through.
06:17And, Bob, the guy I haven't seen yet, Travis Jones, I haven't seen him yet.
06:21You know, I mean, he's not, you know, I mean, he's a veteran and he got paid.
06:25But, I mean, you can show up every now and then, I would think.
06:28And we'll see you today.
06:29Coordinators, by the way, will speak with the media out at OTS.
06:33So, stick around for that one.
06:34And also, finally, heard Malachi Starks talking about Jesse Minter and the way things have run OTA-wise for him
06:41and for everyone else.
06:43Not open to the media.
06:44Not as open during the John Harbaugh era for whatever reason.
06:48But, seems to be fluid.
06:50He brings the youthful energy to the equation.
06:53And, apparently, as was written a couple of times last week, you know, Jesse Minter's not big on the celebrations
06:59at this stage.
07:00Move on to the next play.
07:02Yeah.
07:03Yeah.
07:03And, I think, Bob, being more youthful and energetic and stuff, I think the players probably like that.
07:17They like something new.
07:18Because, you'd like something new because you weren't good last year.
07:23So, you're bringing in something new.
07:25And, what players want to see is, all players care about is, how's this new coach going to help me
07:33get better?
07:34And, by getting better, win games and make more money.
07:37You know, so, if they're talking good, you know, about the staff, they feel pretty good about the coaching staff
07:47and how they feel about them.
07:48Now, it could all change when the games start.
07:53You know, we'll see.
07:54But, right now, everybody's bought in.
07:57And, when Jesse walks in the room, you know, he's won a national championship.
08:01He's been to the playoffs.
08:03He's had a lot of success with defenses.
08:05So, he walks in the room.
08:07He's got instant cred.
08:08Now, when Declan Doyle walks in the room, show me.
08:12You've got to show me because, you know, it's nice that you were on the staff, but you weren't calling
08:17the plays.
08:18You know, so, you've got to show me.
08:20So, that's why I think, Bob, the defense is going to be in a real good place.
08:24And, offensively, I don't know yet.
08:27Yeah, they have good offensive players at the skill spots, for the most part.
08:31Offensive line, still debatable.
08:33But, is Declan Doyle capable of how much more can you extract from Lamar Jackson?
08:40I mean, Todd Munkin, in 2024, Lamar Jackson, had one of the great seasons in the history of the National
08:46Football League.
08:47His quarterback rating was over 120 that year.
08:51And, he didn't win the MVP.
08:53Things went sour last year because he got hurt and everything else that went along with it.
08:57But, what does Declan Doyle get out of him?
09:00Derrick Henry's like, plug and play.
09:01Can you block enough for me?
09:03Dwayne Ledford, so that I get some holes.
09:06How does he get Rashad Bateman motivated?
09:09What's left in Mark Andrews' tank?
09:12And, yeah, there's still some, like, to your point, Vinny, there's still questions on offense.
09:17We're defensively.
09:19All right, who's playing next to Roquan?
09:23Can Matabike return?
09:25And, if that's an added bonus.
09:27Yep.
09:27If he does, defensively, they look in a better situation than they do offensively, even though a lot of their
09:35pro bowlers are on the offensive side of the ball.
09:37Yeah.
09:38The thing that concerns, Bob, we go back to 24.
09:43You know, when they were number one, Lamar should have been MVP.
09:46And, they were dominating.
09:49Yeah, he was first team all pro.
09:50Let's stress that.
09:51I mean, he did win that.
09:52So, they need Lamar to be healthy the whole year.
09:55All right?
09:57Bateman sucked last year compared to 24.
09:59In 24, Bateman could have been a pro bowl receiver.
10:03700, average 17-something.
10:05Zay Flowers had over 1,000 yards.
10:08Likely was a beast.
10:09Andrews had a ton of touchdown catches.
10:12League and tight end touchdowns.
10:14We had, Derek Henry had 2,000 yards rushing almost.
10:19You know, the old line had three pro bowlers.
10:22So, I mean, how does he, and, you know, so how does he get, like you just said, one of
10:29the biggest things for their offense, Bob, is Bateman.
10:32You know, are you going to be able to get Bateman to play like he played in 24?
10:37They cannot replace likely.
10:39That's the big thing.
10:40You know, and Andrews, two years ago, I don't know.
10:43You know, I mean, he's kind of regressed.
10:45He averaged eight yards of reception last year.
10:47Right, and touchdowns were, what, from 16 to four?
10:51Five, yeah.
10:52So, I mean, there's a lot of question marks offensively from an offense that the last three years was, with
10:59Munkin, they were number one, number one, number seven.
11:02So, you know, how do they go back towards number one?
11:07I mean, that's Declan Doyle's job, and we're not going to know, kind of like Lamar said about the young
11:12receivers, Bob, we're not going to know until we play the games.
11:15I don't think that's it.
11:15So, you know, when we're not going to be good enough.
11:15But, I mean, we're not going to have job points on the road, I guess.
