When a superstar player gets a target put on his back, the manager needs to drop the hammer. Instead, Craig Albernaz gave a weak press conference defending San Diego. Rob Long and Cordell Woodland blast the Birds' lack of dog.

00:00So you saw the bean balls that happened in the Saturday's game
00:04between the Orioles and the Padres.
00:06Early in the game, hit batter on the Padres' side,
00:10had to leave the game.
00:12Gunners next at bat, they threw at him twice.
00:14They missed both times.
00:15The next at bat, they finally got him.
00:17Now I'm surprised there wasn't some brawling done
00:19or some bean balling on Sunday as well.
00:21I'm really surprised by that.
00:23But after the game, manager Craig Albanez said this.
00:30Trey hit Bogotts in the head, and there they all didn't like it at all.
00:36Obviously, it definitely wasn't intentional.
00:39But too soon, that slipped out of his hand.
00:42I get there.
00:43Why are they mad?
00:43I mean, the ball hit him in the head and had to come out of the game.
00:47I'm not saying what the ball to Gunna was on purpose,
00:51but it was done the right way.
00:54And that's why there was no gripes from us,
00:56and Gunna was fine with it, and we just took it to first base.
01:01Number one, Gunna didn't look fine with it.
01:02No, he did not.
01:04He did not look fine with it.
01:06He had – when you have words, that's not I'm fine with it.
01:10You understand what I'm saying?
01:11When you have words, that's – you just go to first base
01:16and say nothing when you're fine with it.
01:20I'm not saying it was on purpose, but it was done the right way.
01:24I don't know if I agree with that either, Cordell.
01:26Nah, it's tough to – it's tough to agree with that.
01:30Like you said, they had tried a couple of times before that and missed.
01:34How many chances do you get?
01:36You know, you get that one opportunity.
01:40It shouldn't be, all right, I missed strike two.
01:43Here's the third opportunity.
01:45You're not getting three times to try to be our best player.
01:49Two separate at-bats.
01:51It shouldn't – that's not the right way.
01:53No, it's not.
01:53Any veteran player that you go and talk to will tell you is that next time up,
01:59whenever you take that one opportunity, you get one opportunity.
02:02You don't get two, three.
02:05Like that's not the right way.
02:07If it was the right way, gentlemen, then why was the pitcher ejected?
02:10Right.
02:10He wasn't ejected.
02:11The first pitcher was not ejected because that was done the right way.
02:15Sean Estes, years ago, when the Mets wanted to get back at Roger Clemens
02:19for beating somebody, it was before the DH, universal DH.
02:22Roger Clemens got that at the batter's box.
02:25Sean Estes threw at him.
02:27He missed.
02:29That was it.
02:30That's it.
02:31You had your chance.
02:31You missed.
02:33That was it.
02:34Now play baseball.
02:35Yeah.
02:35And on top of all of it, there's so much that was wrong with it.
02:37Like Rodriguez's first attempt was up near Gunnar's head.
02:40Yes.
02:40The first miss.
02:41That's not how it's done.
02:42It's thrown behind him or, you know, in the backside.
02:44That's the first one.
02:45Then he misses again.
02:47Then you go and he hits him again.
02:48But I just don't understand.
02:50And after everything that's been going on with Basayo, and there's been a lot of outbreak
02:53about that, then you hit the podium.
02:55You knew people were going to be furious about this.
02:58Everybody did.
02:59Yeah.
02:59I don't.
03:01It was done the right way.
03:04I just.
03:05Yeah.
03:06That is that part that just.
03:07That part there.
03:09And you'd like to.
03:10And look, I'm not.
03:11I've seen some people like, oh, Albie doesn't fight for his guys.
03:14I'm not willing to go that far.
03:16I'm not willing to go that far at all.
03:18But man, that was a golden opportunity to definitely, without a doubt, stand up for your
03:24guys, especially one of your better players.
03:27And at a time like you, like after the Basayo stuff, this was an opportunity for him to kind
03:32of just, you know, put his arm around the guys in that clubhouse and stand up for his
03:38guys.
03:38It just didn't.
03:39In that moment with that quote, it didn't feel like he was speaking on behalf of his
03:45players the way you'd like him to.
03:46The reason why I am surprised by his comments is because I see him as a manager that takes
03:53up with players.
03:54That's why I'm surprised.
03:55If that wasn't the case, I don't know if I would be told about it now because it would
04:00be par for the course.
04:01Right.
04:01But this is not.
04:02This is the opposite of what I thought.
04:05I thought from what I've seen, Craig Albin has is the guy that will be walking towards
04:10the mound himself when you're holding him back.
04:12That's what I expected based on what he's shown me.
04:16When it comes to the fire for his players, you know, and that whole thing.
04:19See, to me, that thing that with he and Samuel Basayo is not akin to this.
04:26That's he and Basayo.
04:27This is a person from the outside.
04:30And that's, that's why I'm surprised.
04:32I would, I would have, I would have loved to have been down there because I wouldn't
04:35have asked him there in front of the podium, but a sidebar, you know, Craig Albin has
04:41is the king of the sidebars.
04:43I'm just, I'm telling you right now, folks listening.
04:46Craig Albin has and watching is the king of the sidebars.
04:51I enjoyed the sidebars, sidebars with him more than the press conferences.
04:55Without a doubt.
04:56Without a doubt.
04:56That that's, that's very fair.
04:58He gives you a lot of material.
04:59He's very open and honest.
05:02Um, and yeah, I mean, I, to your point, like, yeah, I'd look at him as a guy that is,
05:08that
05:08wants to be that type of shield for his team.
05:11And some people use this opportunity to go back to that Clement play at second base in
05:15Toronto and felt like he should have been thrown out in that play.
05:19I don't look at it as connected.
05:21Like I thought he, he obviously tried to get thrown out when Jackson holiday was going
05:26to first base.
05:26It didn't end up working out.
05:28Um, but I, I'm just disappointed that he kind of punted at the opportunity to, to, to really
05:36stand up for his guy.
05:37That's a good word.
05:38He did.
05:38He put it 4, 10, 5, 8, 3, 1 0 5, 7.
05:41Kevin, let's go to Kevin in Ellicott city.
05:42What's up, Kevin?
05:44What's good.
05:44Rob and Cordell.
05:45Good morning.
05:45Good morning.
05:48I'd like you, Cordell.
05:49I would have liked to have seen him be a little more of a dog in that situation.
05:53I've been like, that's not the right way to do it because, you know, unfortunately, fellas,
05:58that seems typical for the time period nowadays.
06:01These folks is so bloodthirsty for retribution, but need player B and player C to fulfill the retribution.
06:09Like, you don't get three times a throw and no buy, but you know, I guess that's far for
06:15the course these days.
06:16I mean, back in my day as a 50 year old man, it felt like, you know, you got one
06:21chance,
06:22one shot.
06:23And like you were talking about, Rob, it's, it's, it's water under the bridge after that.
06:27But, uh, yeah, I need Albie to be a little more of a dog.
06:31Like when he got hit in the face with the ball.
06:33Let me ask you this, Kevin, Kevin, were you surprised that the Orioles didn't have retaliation
06:37on Sunday?
06:41Um, not really just because I don't know if we really got that level of dog in us, but
06:47maybe we just had more discipline and maybe we were just trying to be the better, you
06:52know, better team.
06:53It's tough to say on that, Rob, but it didn't really surprise me.
06:58I think we're a little bit soft.
06:59Gotcha.
07:00I just want you guys to know that I'm not designed to always take the high road.
07:07Sometime I low crawl.
07:08Especially when you're getting hit by a pitch that's, you know, 90 plus miles per hour.
07:13Like, yeah, that, that doesn't feel good.
07:15Right.
07:16Right.
07:16Like how many times you're going to throw at me?
07:18And I do think like talking, going back to Craig, not defending his guys, you know,
07:25how you can say what you want, but you know, you think back to how a couple of times coming
07:29out of that dugout and going out there and having some words and trying to defend his guys.
07:34Now I've criticized Hyde's version of the Orioles too, for being slightly soft in the
07:41regard, in the regard of getting hit and nothing there, there being no retaliation, them turning
07:46the other cheek a little too much for my liking.
07:50Um, but at least I think you, you felt like Hyde would, was not afraid to at least go out
07:55there and have some words.
07:56And I, and it's funny, you bring up Craig and hit with that ball.
07:59I think Craig's demeanor has changed quite a bit.
08:03I think he has tried to be a lot more calm since getting hit with that ball.
08:07He talked about some of the side effects of that and he has passed a lot of that.
08:12Um, but I think a part of it is maybe not wanting to blow a blood vessel in his head
08:18or
08:19something by getting too upset, but I don't know.
08:21He seems like he's calmed down a little bit since getting hit in the face 410-583-1057 is
08:27the number bottom was big, bad morning show on the fan.
08:30We got a little situation on the big, bad morning show.
08:35Got a little situation.
08:39So I'm not quite sure if I'm taking this the right way, but we got, we, we, we, we have
08:45something.
08:46So we're going.
