MASN's Roch Kubatko joined The Big Bad Morning Show to talk all things Baltimore Orioles after their 7-3 homestand. Roch explains why he still can't completely figure out this volatile O's roster despite their recent success against the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees.
Transcript
00:00Rock Orioles won 7 out of 10 on the homestand.
00:04You could argue they should have won the game Friday,
00:06but you could also make the same argument.
00:09Very well could have lost on Saturday.
00:12I didn't see, I agree with Ed when he said before the homestand
00:16they needed to win about 7.
00:17I agree with that.
00:18I just didn't see them winning 7 games out of 10.
00:22I didn't, but again, I can't figure this team out.
00:25Like, honestly, as soon as somebody can, let me know.
00:27Because every time I think, and we'll joke about it on the beat,
00:30we'll be like, hey man, this team is so back.
00:33And then they'll lose a couple and you're like, all right, never mind.
00:36We're not going to be working in October, it looks like.
00:39And then it's like, hey, this team is so back.
00:41I mean, this is a big homestand.
00:43And it's the same team that loses 4 in New York.
00:46It wasn't even competitive.
00:47And then takes 2 or 3 from the Yankees here.
00:49They get swept at the trough.
00:51One of those games definitely they should have won.
00:52Then they come back here and sweep.
00:54I mean, who could figure them out?
00:56And I, you know, the momentum is the next day starting pitcher.
01:00So it wasn't like that big comeback Saturday led to what happened yesterday.
01:04That's just Kyle Braddish and the offense.
01:07But still, I mean, that was a game that when they came back and won that thing,
01:12I said, look, I'll believe anything with this team.
01:14You know what else I'd believe?
01:15They go to Boston and get swept because I can't figure them out at this point.
01:21Me either.
01:22That's what's so frustrating.
01:25I just thought it's just like it's there.
01:28And that's the question.
01:29Like, you look at the roster.
01:31You look at the names.
01:32And this is, I don't think it's really being, it's not Homerism.
01:36They've got a really, they have a load of talent on that roster.
01:40I just don't know what it is when you still see things like mental errors and kind of, you know,
01:48dumb base running sometimes and being picked off at first and throwing to the wrong.
01:54It's little things like this.
01:55Like, I just don't understand what's going on with the team.
01:59Despite the talent, I just think they're really underperforming.
02:02I don't think they're a bad team.
02:04No, I don't either.
02:05I mean, they have been.
02:06And it was curious with the fundamentals in the defense where they keep saying that they're stressing it as if
02:12they never did before.
02:13And I got news for you.
02:14They stressed those things under Brandon Hyde and Tony Mancolino and Buck Showalter.
02:18But it was such an emphasis.
02:19And sometimes you're like, well, maybe it's just you have guys in spots who are going to make mistakes.
02:24You know, that it wasn't a bunch of gold glovers in the outfield and in the infield and whatever.
02:30And having Jordan Westberg out, that's your regular third base.
02:34And that would have improved the defensive third.
02:36And you're right, the pickoff, things like that.
02:39But then it is that you look at the lineup, you're like, there's a lot of talent.
02:43They should be scoring more runs than they are.
02:45Why did they just shut down?
02:47Like, the other night when they didn't get a hit after the fifth inning, I think it was.
02:51And it's like, you know, it just comes and goes.
02:53You saw yesterday what they're capable of when they just pounced on the Jays early.
02:58And you wonder why they can't do that consistently.
03:00Now, fortunately, the whole league is pretty mediocre.
03:03So it's like they can hover near 500 and still be in this.
03:07I think they're a game back for the last wild card.
03:10So, you know, they just need to get more consistent, get a little healthier if that's possible.
03:15But, yeah, the talent's there.
03:17Now the rotation is what's keying all of this, clearly.
03:20And, you know, I expected more from Boz and Bassett and Braddish to start the season.
03:26And now it's happening.
03:27I did not expect this from Brandon Young.
03:29He's got the lowest ERA on the staff, but good for him.
03:32And we expected Eflin and Kramer, and they're out.
03:35But, you know, they're pitching a lot better.
03:37It all starts there.
03:38You get the kind of starting pitching you're getting with Braddish and what we've been seeing lately.
03:43And even from, you know, Trevor Rodgers was six scoreless before the two two-run homers in the seventh.
03:48That's going to make them a better team right off the bat.
03:50And then, of course, when they start hitting like they do, which they're capable of Cousers heating up, that's huge.
03:55And Gunner's not just home-runner strikeout right now.
03:59So, yeah, I think the talent there, they've just been underperforming.
04:03But, again, so have a lot of teams in the American League, and that's actually helped them.
04:07Let's talk about jacked son holiday.
04:10It looks like a buddy of mine texted me and said he looks jacked, like he's been in the gym
04:14for a while now.
04:14And for his stature, the stories that Dexter Fowler was telling during the broadcast yesterday about him coming in the
04:21clubhouse all the time,
04:22what are your thoughts on him being back?
04:24And do we start to see him more as an everyday player again?
04:28Is that something you expect to see soon?
04:31I think more regularly he was getting some starts against lefty.
04:34I just think they were being a little careful because of the time he missed
04:37and because he still had been feeling a little bit of that discomfort in the hand.
04:41Now, when I talked to him the other day, he said he only felt it maybe one time since he
04:45rejoined the Orioles, and that's been it.
04:47But they're still going to be careful to make sure that they don't have any setbacks.
04:52But, you know, he does look bigger, and it's funny because we just said that the other day.
04:55I don't know if we were in the clubhouse or maybe the press box, but I looked over at him.
04:59He's wearing a sleeveless shirt, and I said, man, remember when he was that skinny kid?
05:03But it makes sense because when we saw him, he was, you know, what, 19, 20?
05:07I mean, I think we've all bulked up since those years.
05:10I thought he started working out with you, Rock.
05:12Those biceps, man.
05:14No, because his legs are bigger.
05:20But he has, yeah, he's spilling out, and, you know, that's big for the lineup, too, and it makes the
05:25bench better.
05:26Like, nothing against Jeremiah Jackson, but really, he shouldn't be playing every single day.
05:31So if you have him coming off the bench once in a while, that's going to make that unit stronger,
05:36plus Blaze Alexander,
05:37and if Kobe's not playing every single day, it just makes him a better team.
05:41But, yeah, he's definitely filled out from what we remember before.
05:45Now, not as big.
05:46I guess his brother, Ethan, who just broke his foot, is the bigger of the two.
05:50He's more like his dad.
05:51He's more like the physical player.
05:53But Jackson's got a lot of talent, and there's a reason why he was 1-1 and the number one
05:57prospect in baseball.
05:59It would be nice to be able to keep him on the field for a full season again like he
06:02was last year and watch him keep developing.
06:05There he is, Roccabaco, Mastersports.com, School of Rock.
06:09Rock, enjoy your day off.
06:11Thanks for making him get up early and work, Rob.
06:13Jesus.
06:18I text him.
06:19I said, can you do a 7-25 with me?
06:22And it was bubbles, bubbles, bubbles, you know, for my iPhone.
06:27I thought it was going to have to negotiate.
06:29You know when it takes a long time and you just see the dots and you're like waiting, and then
06:32all of a sudden someone texts, sure.
06:34They were texting the reason they couldn't do it and then deleted it and sent it back.
06:37I thought for sure, I wanted him this time, but I thought for sure it would be some negotiating on
06:42time.
06:42You know we're off, right?
06:43But he said yes.
06:454-10-5-8-3, 1-0-5-7.
06:47That's the number.
