00:00So we did like an anatomical representation of my scoliosis on the back of this jack.
00:04We had to end up like finding sneaky places to air raid the outfit so there's a dial station.
00:35I'm Des Rocks from New York City.
00:38We are on tour right now in the US getting ready to release a new album called To Hell and
00:43Back.
00:44It comes out in June.
00:45For each tour I have a very different outfit and visual perspective on what the show is going to look
00:52like.
00:52And we have two really special new ones for this tour.
00:55Often we travel with a wardrobe case but on this tour we're just keeping all the wardrobe in the back
01:00lounge and the closet.
01:02It can get a little stinky and a little sweaty in there for sure.
01:05But let's take a look.
01:06The first outfit that we have on this tour, like every single outfit we have, is custom made with an
01:13incredible designer in New York City.
01:16named Amber Doyle who's basically like a band member and so integral to everything I do.
01:22And for this tour there's a certain darkness in the new music that I really wanted to represent on stage.
01:31And being from New York City we took a lot of inspiration from the dirt and the crime of the
01:36place in which we're from.
01:37And we wanted to specifically draw birds that you see in the city and the way in which they get
01:44greasy and oily and they reflect all these colors.
01:47So Amber dreamed up an incredible design that incorporated the sheen and the sort of oil slick vibe of a
01:56lot of these birds in the city.
01:58And incorporate it all in this incredible outfit here.
02:01The sleeves are detachable like a lot of the Desrock sleeves they zip off.
02:05Which is really like a functional must.
02:08And then the back here is covered in this material that reflects on stage in a way that's just really
02:12profound.
02:13And again really matches the energy of the music.
02:17So this piece is what I'm wearing mostly on this tour.
02:21But I do change it up a lot.
02:22I do bring back a lot of older outfits.
02:24Especially for markets and cities I've never played before.
02:28So yeah this one is, we call it many different things, we call it the Angel of Death.
02:33Because it's very like a dystopian and heavenly at the same time.
02:37So my collaboration process with Amber is that first of all we both just very much have a similar vision
02:47for what a modern rock and roll project can look and feel like live.
02:51And we also have a shared appreciation of the past and the history of clothes and the history of rock
02:57and roll.
02:58So we spend a tremendous amount of time just brainstorming and just shooting the shit.
03:02And thinking of ideas and Googling things and Google imaging things.
03:07And I'll show her something and she'll show me something.
03:09And then that will lead us down this mysterious rabbit hole that then births all these amazing concepts.
03:16And she will sketch out so many incredible and big ideas based off everything we talk about and show each
03:21other.
03:22And then we kind of work on narrowing it down to a couple specific items.
03:27And that's actually for me one of the hardest part is choosing in those forks in the road like where
03:33to go with the clothes.
03:34Because there are so many incredible sketches.
03:37And similarly in the process we really draw a lot from the past.
03:41And she has an incredible archive of books that document extraordinarily niche fashion movements and extraordinarily niche designers.
03:53And we spent a lot of time just poring over those.
03:55I think the most recent one she had was a racing fashion book.
04:00It's like 70's racing fashion.
04:02And we've picked a lot of stuff from that because the music is so fast.
04:06And we want it to feel very fast live.
04:09So that's been an incredible sort of inspiration.
04:11You would think it would just be rock and roll.
04:12But it's not.
04:13Like there are so many other cultures and pockets of the universe that we draw from.
04:19Every single outfit I've ever worn on stage is made entirely from scratch.
04:25Nothing is stock or pre-order.
04:27Every single inch, every single detail is something that is painstakingly thought out.
04:34Both from an artistic perspective and also a functional perspective.
04:38We put on such a batshit insane live show.
04:44That the clothes need to be functional.
04:46They need to last.
04:47And even with all those things taken into consideration.
04:51I still beat the shit out of them.
04:54And the way in which they wear and tear.
04:56I think only adds to a sort of mystical.
05:02I don't know.
05:03Like a mystical patina that then these outfits take on as they age.
05:07Even with this one.
05:08Like I've already put a lot of wear and tear on the knees here.
05:12And I've put a tremendous amount of wear and tear on the armpits as well.
05:14Just from how much I'm flailing about on stage.
05:18But it really adds to it.
05:20Because again, there's nothing I hate more than when an artist is just kind of styled.
05:24And has no personal or emotional connection to the clothes they wear.
05:27Which is why it's super important to me to spend a tremendous amount of time on the outfits and the
05:33stage looks.
05:34Now, this outfit also in particular.
05:36What's so special about this one.
05:38Is that it's the first time we've ever kind of added texture beyond the scope of the immediate fit.
05:45So, this outfit in particular has this texturing on it.
05:51That live just creates like a subtle extra dimension.
05:55And a certain level of depth.
05:57And it's subtle but really beautiful and extraordinary.
06:00And when this hits the light, it just sparkles in a way that's super special.
06:05And then also everything is very functional too.
06:07Like in a lot of the early outfits, after the show I'd be so sweaty I had a really hard
06:11time getting them off.
06:12And we created Zipper as a goal on the entire outfit.
06:16Which is not only aesthetically just kind of an interesting upgrade.
06:20But also asking to take these things off after the show.
06:23Amber and I have been particularly obsessed with this idea of creating a format.
06:28So, all the outfits are actually very similar in their shape.
06:32But it's what we do with that template on each album cycle that evolves the narrative from the fashion perspective.
06:38This is the first time that we actually took things a little bit more three dimensional and out.
06:45And then the template that I was talking about really boils down to like a couple essentials.
06:50The essentials are pants, jacket, suspenders, cuffs.
06:56Those are like the trinity of things I wear on stage.
07:01And I'm always just in a regular black tank or a white tank.
07:04And the same pair of shoes that I've worn for every single Des Rock show and non-Des Rock show.
07:10Even shows before I was Des Rocks.
07:11I've worn the same exact pair of shoes for every single show.
07:14And then going back to the functionality of the piece.
07:16You know, I have a wireless ears pack.
07:19And this is built into every single outfit.
07:21Because often you have no place to put them.
07:22You end up smushing in your pocket.
07:24It's hard to reach and access.
07:26But these are really built for function, you know.
07:28And we're constantly upgrading existing outfits.
07:31Like, for example, our bass player Doc.
07:34He's in a full leather one piece.
07:36And the show was so intense that he was nearly passing out at the end of each set.
07:40And we had to end up like finding sneaky places to air-rate the outfit so he doesn't die on
07:45stage.
07:46So this is kind of like my dismembered outfit here.
07:49But similarly to the pants, we have that same kind of texture that's matched here.
07:53And I'm not always going to start the show fully in sleeves.
07:57Especially in the summer time.
07:58It can be so hot.
08:00I mean, we used to do a really fun thing on the last tour.
08:02Where we did like a sleeve reveal.
08:04Which is a little corny, but it was fun.
08:06I would freeze and my tech would run on stage.
08:08And you'd go too fast on zips and pull the sleeves off.
08:11And it's just like a fun way of making clothes.
08:15The fashion are part of the show and the experience.
08:19Because that intersection of rock and roll.
08:21The clothing and fashion is so important to me.
08:24And I think so special and nostalgic.
08:27And so sorely overlooked today.
08:29In a way that many artists don't really embrace.
08:32That you have this whole other medium in which you can explore creatively.
08:36A lot of people don't take advantage of it.
08:38Here we have the white with the studs and the black.
08:40This is an outfit from the Dream Machine tour.
08:42And the Dream Machine era.
08:44During that era we also had an all white Dream Machine suit.
08:47Black, white, and red.
08:49Really beautiful and stunning.
08:50This is one I kind of have as a backup.
08:53Or any markets that we haven't really played yet before.
08:56I'm going to kind of put this one back in rotation.
08:57Also sometimes a lot of the core outfits that need a break.
09:01And then you need a rest.
09:02Because they'll still be soaking wet from the night before.
09:05And then to see where things originally started.
09:08I actually have the V1.
09:11The very first custom outfit we ever did.
09:14Which I'll show you here.
09:16Which in hindsight now.
09:18It's like so simple and understated.
09:21It's just black and red.
09:23And there's the Amber Doyle logo in there.
09:26Amber Doyle New York.
09:27And we've done some really fun stuff with this.
09:30Some really fun upgrades over the years too.
09:32This is one that we kind of continued to workshop.
09:35And this is the original format for the outfit.
09:38And you'll see like the shape is mostly the same.
09:41Except for the collar designs we experiment a lot with.
09:44This one has magnets in the collar.
09:46So that they can stay down.
09:49And then we went with a completely different collar design for this version over here.
09:54A lot of the times we've had to figure out ways.
09:59For the outfits to overcome what I'm doing on stage.
10:02So the magnets is one way to have the collar not be flopping around all the time.
10:07Which would happen like if I wore a jacket like this.
10:09It would be floppy.
10:10It's funny like the dichotomy of the very thoughtfully curated custom clothing.
10:17And also the other things I wear.
10:19So the suspenders too were custom and made by Amber.
10:22But I also just wear black Hanes tanks.
10:24And I order these like in mass.
10:27And I wear them every single day.
10:28And it's kind of like my uniform.
10:29And they're like 18 bucks on Amazon.
10:34And yeah those are very very stock.
10:36And then the other under layers that we kind of have were the accessories.
10:39The fun part.
10:40The cuffs.
10:41The cuffs are also something that we put a lot of time into.
10:44And that Amber is incredible at.
10:46So the cuffs.
10:48Everything is mixed and matchable.
10:50And even sometimes we'll mix and match the sleeves of different outfits.
10:53And it creates a really interesting look.
10:55So everything can go together.
10:56But these have been the cuffs.
10:59That have been going with this outfit on this tour.
11:03And it's kind of a new generation where it's.
11:06I don't know.
11:07I think hearkening baths almost like a Judas Priest kind of vibe.
11:10But just really beautiful.
11:12Beautiful pieces.
11:12You know there's so many different colors.
11:17Different colors.
11:18Different cuffs.
11:19That go with different outfits.
11:21And on this recent tour.
11:22We even took things a step farther.
11:24And started matching the guitars to the outfits as well.
11:29So Amber has been on certain guitars of mine.
11:33Leather wrapping the entire guitar.
11:35To perfectly match one of the outfits.
11:38And then we even have something a bit crazier on this run.
11:40Where we have a custom guitar that we made with incredible luthier and prog.
11:44And aviator guitars.
11:47And that has a magnetic inlay.
11:49And that magnetic inlay can be swapped out every night.
11:53To match the outfit exactly.
11:55So we actually use the exact same material.
11:57This kind of shiny material here.
12:00Is the exact same material on the magnetic inlay of the guitar.
12:04So it's all one kind of cohesive living, breathing rock and roll machine.
12:10I recently became a watch guy.
12:12Not that I collect watches or anything.
12:13I just have one watch.
12:14But I love to wear a watch.
12:16I love feeling the weight on my hand.
12:17I don't often play one on stage.
12:19Sometimes I do.
12:20But it's always set to New York time.
12:22So no matter where I am in the world.
12:23I always know what time it is in New York City.
12:27And my daytime outfits are like Desrocks casual.
12:31In the sense that I'm pretty much always in jeans and a tank.
12:36And a leather jacket.
12:38And a leather jacket daytime rabbit hole we could go down.
12:41It's pretty immense.
12:42I'm a bit of like a leather jacket head.
12:44I'm pretty addicted to them.
12:46And I spend a lot of time on tour just looking for other leather jackets.
12:50Usually they're quite quite old.
12:52And there's something about people from like the 40s and 50s.
12:55Where I think my body type was just meant to exist in that time.
12:59Because they fit me like I love.
13:02And during the day I'm really just like in jeans, sneakers and a leather jacket.
13:07And I really can't go anywhere without like my sunglasses.
13:10That's very, very, very important to me.
13:13I mean like one of the few things I have on tour.
13:15Because I can't also speak a lot when I'm on the road.
13:18Is just looking for leather jackets.
13:21And I have spots really all over the country that I've been to before.
13:25That I know all they have great stuff.
13:26And I can't wait to pop in there after soundcheck.
13:29Especially in like Boise, Idaho.
13:30We had an amazing spot.
13:33The spot in Dallas that recently closed.
13:35Which was pretty devastating.
13:36They had amazing stuff.
13:38But I think they moved to Austin.
13:39So that's okay.
13:42And yeah, I'm really hunting on tour.
13:43Like looking for great jackets.
13:46Especially because outside the city.
13:47There's so many more finds to be had.
13:50Really interesting things.
13:51No, I mean like modern brands don't fit me as well.
13:54I think All Saints like 10 years ago.
13:56Had a brief window of being pretty good.
13:59But I think the stuff has gone really downhill.
14:01It's pretty shitty now.
14:02So I have a couple old All Saints jackets.
14:04From when I first started really getting into them.
14:06And I still love them when I've toured.
14:08And that are really great.
14:09The watch is a Breitling.
14:12And it's just an incredible watch.
14:14What drew me to this watch is the intersection of something so unrefined.
14:23And then something so refined.
14:23So to be wearing like a beautiful Swiss watch.
14:29While also in like you know a really kind of punked up rock and roll outfit.
14:36I think that intersection, that dichotomy is really interesting.
14:40You know what I mean?
14:42Especially like after a show if I'm so beaten up and sweating and bruised.
14:46And you have like a nice watch on.
14:47I think that's just a very cool dichotomy of flavors and vibes.
14:52So this one is really insane.
14:56And I've put a lot of miles on this guy.
14:58It's blue and silver and black.
15:00And it has a sparkle that on a stage, especially outdoor on a festival stage, just goes crazy.
15:10This one has a zipper design that goes all the way up.
15:14So it's super easy to take off.
15:16And then I unfortunately suffer from quite a lot of spinal issues.
15:21And we wanted to like kind of own that life.
15:25You know?
15:25In the sense where it's like I'm not pretending to be something I'm not.
15:28So we did like an anatomical representation of my scoliosis on the back of this jacket.
15:34But embraced in a way that is so glam and so evil to evil.
15:38And I actually had surgery like right down here recently on my back.
15:43And we just kind of own it and embrace it.
15:45And we glam it up.
15:46You know what I mean?
15:46It's like all about taking your weaknesses and turning them into something cool and brilliant and interesting and strong.
15:52This one has just an absolutely incredible yellow interior here.
15:56That is super plush and soft.
15:58And the pops of yellow that poke out from underneath really create a pretty brilliant effect on it.
16:05No changes mid-show.
16:07I walk out into the venue if I haven't been there before.
16:11And I just get like a vibe for the room.
16:13So like when I walk into like Houston, Texas.
16:15I'm like man this feels like Houston, Texas to me.
16:17You know what I mean?
16:18If the venue is very dark, I'll often want to wear something that pops and is very light.
16:23And conversely if the venue is very light, I want to wear something really dark and provide a strong contrast.
16:29These are the boots that I have worn to every single Des Rock show that I have ever played.
16:39And not just every single Des Rock show, but every single show before that in another band I was in
16:44as well.
16:45They have been resold about eight times, no exaggeration, by a place on Irving Place called John Shoe Repair.
16:55He's an awesome guy.
16:56They are completely cracked and have holes in them.
17:01And this whole area has been re-sewn together nothing short of a dozen times.
17:08They are completely ruined.
17:10I have no superstitions live whatsoever except for these boots.
17:15This is the only thing.
17:17And if I wasn't wearing these boots, I would feel so weird walking on a stage.
17:22And if anything ever happens to these boots, I may have to retire.
17:28These are Theory boots from 2014.
17:34I've probably played a thousand shows in these boots in 20 countries.
17:40Thank you for coming and checking out my clothing, my outfits.
17:44Des Rocks, we've got a new album coming out called To Hell I'm Back.
17:47It drops June 12th.
17:49If you want to catch me on tour, make sure you go to desrocks.com.
18:03After that, I'm going to
18:05Let me turn it down for a couple steps.
18:11I'll do one more.
18:12I'll do two next ones first.
18:12I'll do three next эндиLES.құ
