00:00I tune down a half step sometimes, or if I'm a little bit sick, to help me hit those high
00:04notes.
00:04This really helps when you are at a venue with not cool lights or an LD that doesn't
00:08really know what they're doing.
00:35What's up, it's Skro, I'm on the I Set My Friends on Fire tour, 2026, we're at the Bottom
00:41Lounge in Chicago, and I'm excited to talk about my rig, a lot of people are always very
00:46curious about how I do my stuff live, so this is it.
00:49I have two guitars on tour, this is kind of my twinkly Midwest guitar, this is my Ibanez
00:59Gio, this is my first guitar I ever bought, this is what I learned to play guitar on,
01:03and I still play it live, it's got my logo, it's just tape, purely aesthetic, all completely
01:08stock, I don't really know much about pickups and things like that, but I do know it's like
01:1620 years old at this point, so it's cool to still have it on the road and still be doing
01:20my thing.
01:20This is the tuning I have it in, this is the normal tuning, all my stuff is in, all of
01:25the Julia Wolfe stuff that we make together is in that tuning.
01:29It's a little tough to, I guess I'll say, I tune down a half step sometimes, or if I'm
01:35a little bit sick, to help me hit those high notes, so I'll be in that tuning.
01:39This is kind of like, yeah, my little Midwest twinkly sort of vibe guitar.
01:43For this guitar, I always stick in the middle switch, which is going to be a split single
01:48coil for both of these.
01:50I'm using the Darderio Nixels, I think they're called, and they're specifically for drop C,
01:57so I think they're 10 gauge and they might go down to 52 gauge.
02:02Actually I can just show you right here.
02:04This is just a little box with a bunch of stuff in it.
02:11Here we go, these are the strings I use, 12-60, a little heavier than I thought, but that's
02:16what I use on these guys.
02:17Yeah, middle switch, single coil, volume all the way up, tone all the way up, I just crank
02:23it.
02:23Alright, this is my beefy boy, this is my 7-string Legator.
02:27They sent this out a couple years ago.
02:30I love this guitar, it's an N7SS, I believe, so it's 7-string and I tune it to drop A
02:39usually,
02:40so these 6-strings are usually just like a standard, and then the low A, you know, it's
02:45a low A for like chugging stuff.
02:47So any of my heavy stuff, like Bi-Di-Bide is on here, I also do fractures on here, I
02:53have
02:53some capos that I don't have out right now, but they have a capo on both of the headstocks,
02:58and I take them on and off and put them like in between the sets, stuff like that.
03:02Same deal, I'm going to have the volume and the tone all the way up, I'm going to bring
03:06this pickup selector, just one like that, it's going to be the same vibe, single coil,
03:11split, you know, split coil like that, and then the strings, the strings I'm using for this
03:17is the Daudario Nixels 10-59 7-string, and I also got a nice little lock strap for when I'm
03:25really jumping around, these have been known to fall on me, so thankfully I have these.
03:29These are Daudario, yeah, Daudario lock straps, shout out Daudario for freaking me up with
03:34that as well, appreciate y'all.
03:36This is my playback rig, it's very small and compact, most people's playback rig is like
03:41very tall and heavy, but a lot of mine is like software intensive stuff, so there's a
03:46lot of stuff going on under the hood.
03:48I have all my tracks in here, and they're all stemmed out, and then I just give those
03:57tails out to the front of house, and then they mix my stems live.
04:00That's all coming out of the Focusrite Claret 8 Pre, you can see that's where I literally
04:06plug my guitar into, just a little tuner, plug my guitar in there, that goes into the interface.
04:11I have this wireless mic right here, Shure BLX4R, and that's going straight into the interface
04:19as well, and that's being processed through Reaper, and then out the tails.
04:25I got my in-ear monitors, so I'm also doing all my internal in-ear monitoring and mixing
04:31inside Reaper as well.
04:32I also have a little light rig, which I could actually set up, it doesn't take very long.
04:37But basically, I have all of these things set up, and then a, hold up, turn this on.
04:46So it's basically triggered through MIDI, so while the track is playing, like it's literally
04:50playing right now, it's going to play all these different MIDI notes, and I have them
04:54set up as different scenes, so if we go back over to the light thing, it's triggering the
04:59scenes right now.
05:00Okay, I actually just set up the lights really quick.
05:03I just have three of these little cans, I usually have four and a light bar, but the
05:07first show I was flying, so just taking all that gear is kind of crazy.
05:10I really don't need them at this venue because they have a pretty sick light set up, but yeah,
05:14I have these MIDI notes triggering that, and those are triggering scenes inside of the lights
05:22program, and then that's being sent out DMX to the lights, and they all do the same thing.
05:26This really helps when you are at a venue with not cool lights or an LD that doesn't really
05:31know what they are doing, because when you have a big part and you want it to look cool,
05:35like the lights just help, especially if there is fog and stuff, it's kind of a game changer
05:40for me at least.
05:41So I don't have any like guitar amps that I tour with.
05:45I actually don't even own any amps at this point, I haven't for years when I am producing
05:50my own music, anyone else's, I just use software for everything.
05:53So like I said, I plug my guitar straight into the interface, and then I have, I have a couple
06:01of amp modelers that are being automated and switched, you know, depending on what part
06:06of the song you're playing.
06:08This is kind of the main one that I use that a lot of people ask about, it's called Over
06:13Loud by THU, and a lot of the time, a lot of the time I'll use this, a lot of
06:21the time
06:21I'll use this orange amp with this, I think that's called a TS-808, the Ibanez, and they're
06:29all automated, so I have all these, I have all these like automation lanes that are turning
06:37the amps on and off, and each instance of the plug-in is just a different tone, so this
06:43is like my more metal tone, that's like my more rock tone.
06:47Everyone always wonders about my clean tone, and it's stayed the same for the last five,
06:52six years, is that I just put OTT on my clean guitar, so if you ever hear me play Clean
06:57Stuff Live, it's literally just my guitar going into the interface, and then it's going
07:02through 29% OTT, and that's, that's all my tone is, and that's all like very meticulously
07:09automated for every single song, with the click, with all the other stems and stuff,
07:14so I can just press play, and then the whole set will go by.
07:18Yeah, this is just a box of a bunch of knick-knacks I gotta keep.
07:24This is my, it's called an Envave Chocolate, it's kind of a cheap like Alibaba thing, but
07:30it works pretty well for me.
07:32This is how I trigger the songs and press play.
07:35It's just like, that presses play, and that does the next song.
07:39So let's say like three songs will go by, like they're supposed to all like, you know, flow
07:44into each other, and then the whole set will stop, and then I'll say some stupid jokes or
07:49whatever, and do a little bit here and there, and then I, when I'm ready, I look at the drummer,
07:54I look at Mike, and I say, alright, let's go, and then I just press play, and then it just
07:58plays the next song, and that does all the stems, it does all the lights, it does all
08:02the automation.
08:03So the only thing I have to worry about on stage is literally just singing and playing
08:08guitar.
08:08I don't have to be, you know, messing around with any foot pedal stuff.
08:12I don't have to worry about like, any lights not working, like, everything is extremely
08:16like, you know, just a lot of time put into the pre-production of it all.
08:21So, these are the IEMs that I use, they're 64 audio custom molds, they're super killer,
08:28looks like V3E, they've treated me very well, and that comes out of my, this is my actual
08:36in-ear pack that I just put on my belt loop right there, Sennheiser, that treats me well.
08:43So, this is my wireless guitar unit, it's a little bum, but it kind of works for me.
08:52It's X-Vive, I forget what it's called, it's the older model, but that one goes onto my
08:56guitar.
08:57I threw a little picture on it so I don't forget, it goes into my guitar, that part goes
09:01into my interface, and then I have, there's a bunch of batteries, like all these are batteries
09:09that are charging because, there's my wireless, wireless mic, wireless in-ears, and a couple
09:16other things that run on batteries, so they're literally all just charging right now, so then
09:20right before the show I'll change all the batteries, and then, oh yeah, for my drummer, this is what
09:27he plugs his ears into, so he just has a, he just has a volume knob for that.
09:33Something really slick that Reaper can do, actually, I'm going to show you this cool, like, app,
09:37almost, that they made.
09:39I don't know how this works at all, but it is working.
09:42On Reaper, they set up, this is, this is just innately in Reaper, so I have a router that's
09:49actually connected to my computer, and my computer is giving off its own network, and then this
09:54is my in-ear mix.
09:55So when I'm, when we're sound checking, or even if I really wanted to while we're playing,
09:59I can just pull up my phone and be like, oh, I can't hear the click, or I can't hear
10:04the
10:04percussion part, or I can't hear Michael, or my own voice, or anything like that.
10:07But, and you can even see, uh, whoops, it's playing.
10:13So like, right here, here's my in-ear mix there, and since it's wireless, you can see
10:18that guy moving right there, you know what I'm saying?
10:21So I could be all the way on the other side of the stage, and be like, oh, I just
10:23need
10:23my click-up.
10:25And the drummer has that too, so he just has the website app, whatever it is, and he
10:29hasn't got to bug me about it, he just, he wants to go quiet, loud, whatever.
10:33And so that's, that's basically everything in this like, little 4U rack.
10:38I've had a little issue with some things here and there, with some grounding and things
10:41like that, but, um, it's pretty, it's pretty clean.
10:45I know a lot of people use like a mixer to do all of this like, splitting and stuff like
10:49that, but I just do all mine internally through Reaper.
10:52And it sounds good, and it's pretty killer to me, so it works out.
10:56Thanks for watching this little gear rundown.
10:58I really enjoy talking about music stuff and gear and stuff.
11:01Feel free to check out my music on Spotify, I just dropped some crazy new songs, uh, Rot
11:05Within and Lately, Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, all that.
11:10I'm on tour with, I set my friends on fire right now, I got another tour with Julia Wolfe
11:14coming up in Europe at the end of the year, around like November, December.
11:17Or if you want to just see me play guitar, uh, you can come to see Julia in, on her
11:22American
11:22run and I'll be playing guitar for that as well.
11:26That's it.
11:48Yeah.
11:58Man, I'll be playing guitar for that as well.
11:58Leave me playing guitar for that as well.
