00:00So this one's got a wet specimen in it.
00:03I add my fun bullets, I find a patch that I like.
00:06I like to make a really gory one.
00:09So this is this year's. It's a little bit darker than last year's.
00:30What's up? I'm Jackie LaPonza.
00:40I'm one of the singers in the band Mushroomhead.
00:42And if you don't know who we are, let me give you a little bit about our stuff that we do.
00:47We are a very theatrical band.
00:50We love our wardrobe. We love costuming.
00:53The guys wear masks on stage. Everything's in-house.
00:56We do everything from top to bottom, start to finish.
01:00We are the team.
01:04We have a new album out. It's called Call the Devil.
01:07And we're going to run through everything from the stage gear to the masks to the hats that we wear on stage for stage threads with digital tour bus.
01:18So Skinny and I live back here and we have our wardrobe back here.
01:22So we're going to start here and then we'll take you to the rest of the guys' stuff.
01:25On this side we have Skinny's red set.
01:29So this is part of the Call the Devil touring gear.
01:35All black and red. Everything was black and red.
01:38And it looks great. Works great.
01:40Some of the hats that I do, I try to match to the wardrobe and whatever we have on stage for the night.
01:47I also match them to the mask colors.
01:51There's sets, different sets, different ways.
01:55Always something new.
01:56So these hats start off as like a blank base.
02:01I get them anywhere from gas stations to truck stops to tractor supply to Goodwill.
02:07This one was from Goodwill because I'm having the hardest time finding my bases on this tour.
02:12So we got a hat from Goodwill. I'm going to see if I can make it work, which I will.
02:19Same with the gas mask.
02:20I'm working on a little gas mask.
02:22It's not done yet, but it's started.
02:25It'll probably be in one of the shows coming up.
02:28So I take the blank base.
02:30I do some spray painting.
02:32I do some hand painting on them.
02:34I add my fun bullets.
02:37I find a patch that I like.
02:38I even add the string.
02:40I have specialty little beads that I put on them to hold the string.
02:47A lot of them don't have any of the beads or the string.
02:51I'll sign all of them.
02:53I add spikes.
02:54Sometimes I add piercing earrings.
02:58Different little things I find around.
03:05Sometimes pins go on.
03:08But yeah, it's all kind of random.
03:09However I'm feeling for the days.
03:12The mask I make for the night.
03:14So actually, this is my newer vest I made.
03:17And it's got some of my favorite patches on it.
03:20I know it's probably not the nicest.
03:23But I like embracing being a woman.
03:26And I like embracing the dumb slang, slur, whatever, terrible words that they use.
03:32I use them as powerful words instead of downing people.
03:35Giddy up sluts.
03:36Come on.
03:37Let's do this.
03:39But I got my T-Rex on here.
03:42I've always loved T-Rex.
03:44I always call it my spirit animal.
03:47Just different patches.
03:48I've used.
03:50I'm big into guns.
03:51I like to shoot.
03:53So I put my special forces up there.
03:55I'm a huge animal lover.
03:57Lots of dogs.
03:58So a canine unit.
04:00More gun patches.
04:02Obviously my bullets that I use in my hats as well.
04:06Star Wars.
04:07I'm sure we have some Star Wars fans.
04:09And then flip it over.
04:14And a patch like this doesn't exist because we only have black and white or red and black.
04:20But I paint mine so that it's the color that I choose.
04:25And then on the back of this, a lot of people call me Jax.
04:27Like Donnie always calls me Jax.
04:29And it's just a nice simple name instead of Miss Jackie.
04:33So Jax works if you call me out.
04:36You can call me Jax.
04:37These are my staple.
04:40If you've seen me on stage with any wardrobe, I usually have this belt specifically and a pair of suspenders.
04:49It's just kind of my thing.
04:51It's always kind of been my thing for years upon years.
04:54I don't know why.
04:55I just like it.
04:56I like extra flair.
05:00And this, we just went to David Perry's Music Museum.
05:04The Perry's Music Museum yesterday.
05:06And he had one of my old wardrobe hanging up.
05:10And I looked at him and I said, oh my God, it's the vest that fits the best.
05:15Can I finish the tour with it?
05:16He said, absolutely.
05:17So if you see this vest, this was my first original vest that I wore with Mushroom Head for years.
05:27And it has the desire across the back.
05:31And it's just the perfect size that I'm, I don't know why it says a small.
05:38And this one also says small on the tag.
05:41But somehow, the length of it is much longer and the width of it is much wider.
05:52And no matter how much I alter this vest, it will not fit properly.
05:57So I'm really happy to be allowed to wear this one again.
06:02And I'm going to wear it tonight.
06:04Even though it doesn't have all the flair on it.
06:06It's the Rothko vest.
06:09We love our Rothko vest.
06:11But I'm assuming this must be a youth.
06:14But I don't know how I fit a youth small.
06:17Either way, it's bright and I love it.
06:20And it's back in my possession for now.
06:24Until I give it back.
06:27But we'll get there.
06:28We're going to get another one.
06:30So this one will be eventually up for sale.
06:32Just because it doesn't really fit great.
06:34But it has a lot of my personal patches and pins on it.
06:38Which now I have to go hunting for more.
06:41So if you've got any cool stuff, send them my way.
06:44Here's Skinny's vest.
06:46For this tour.
06:47He's got some extra add-ons to it.
06:52I'll just take it down.
06:56It says destroy.
06:57He's got extra pieces, parts on it.
07:01We have Jessica Haney back at home.
07:03She helps go through the wardrobe.
07:06And make it as special as it is.
07:10And here's the jumpsuit that he wears.
07:12This is actually one of his original jumpsuits.
07:14This is an original jumpsuit.
07:17Skinny still has all his original jumpsuits.
07:20And every once in a while, he'll pull them out to use them.
07:25And because we're using the green jumpsuits on this tour, he pulled out his original.
07:31And so his goes with his vest.
07:35But I believe the ones that the guys are wearing, again, something that doesn't fit me properly, is the new jumpsuits.
07:42So I got my jumpsuit.
07:43I put it on.
07:44We're like, yeah, no.
07:45It's like you're wearing a big bag.
07:47It just doesn't work.
07:48So every couple shows, we switch.
07:51And this is my red wardrobe.
07:54And it's obviously, again, different than the guys because I want something that fits me properly.
08:01So this one, I got this one.
08:08Namilia is the vest.
08:10And then I add to it.
08:12And same with the pants.
08:14I don't know what the brand is, but I just add to it.
08:19Make it our own.
08:20And then here's the red pants that go with Skinny's red wardrobe.
08:24His red vest over there goes with these guys.
08:27And obviously, over time, a lot of pieces, parts fall off of these wardrobe.
08:33As soon as we wash them, things start going missing.
08:38So they're doing great, actually, for being worn for over a year now.
08:44It's always a gamble when we throw them in the wash.
08:47Try to fold them inside out and zip them up and see what happens.
08:52All right.
08:52So we did the back of the bus where Skinny and I have some of our wardrobe.
08:57Now we're backstage in our green room.
09:00And we could show you some masks and the other guy's wardrobe.
09:04So we have every night or every couple nights, we have a different set of masks.
09:10And they either go with the red wardrobe or they go with the green and black wardrobe.
09:15Tonight, we are with the green and purple set.
09:19Roxy painted this one.
09:20Jessica Haney.
09:21She's back at home.
09:22There's a few of us artists.
09:26Aiden, myself, Skinny, Victor, Jess, Joe.
09:32Everybody's kind of in on this.
09:34It's a team effort.
09:35We're all huge into art.
09:38Everybody does their part, for sure.
09:40From pouring, to sculpting, to painting, to fabricating.
09:45There's a lot of steps along the way.
09:47All right.
09:48Well, first off, the boss man.
09:50Skinny.
09:53Here's his mask for this set.
09:56Sick with the dreads.
09:58These are all hand-wrapped.
10:00Everything is pretty dope.
10:02The eyeball is cool.
10:05Cool little addition to this set.
10:08The hockey masks.
10:10These are for the water drummers.
10:12So that's like an alternate sometimes.
10:15Like, Simon, I think, will put it right on his face.
10:17And then I think Skinny throws it on over his mask.
10:20So they wear those for a couple songs.
10:22Scotty's got an alternate.
10:24He's got the resin.
10:26The resin mask, I think Victor probably did the center.
10:32Yeah, he does 3D prints and shit, just like this.
10:35This centerpiece always changes, so this time he's got the pentagram.
10:39Joe does the beard with the same hand-wrapped dreads.
10:46Always sick.
10:49Then we got Stevie, the Hulk, for this motherfucker.
10:56It's kind of weird.
10:57Falls apart.
10:57Yeah, yeah, it's hard to hold up.
10:59He doesn't like anything on his chin for singing.
11:02It's like the Guardian, Cleveland.
11:06Cleveland Guardian statue.
11:08This is Simon.
11:10You remember?
11:11Yep.
11:12Killing it on water drums.
11:15Mohawk in the eyeball, too, just like the Skinny.
11:20Here I am.
11:21This one, I mean, the crowns are all different.
11:25Everything is custom every time.
11:28This is, I take wire, and then I wrap it in cheesecloth.
11:32And then I put all the bird skulls on.
11:36Covered in some resin.
11:38And then painted up.
11:39This one was just a solid gloss black.
11:42Pretty sick.
11:42I just painted the mask.
11:43I painted the crown and fabricated all of it.
11:48Dr. F.
11:50Ryan.
11:51The Batman.
11:54Sick.
11:55Always sick.
11:57And then Scotty.
11:58Scotty's a dummy.
11:59Yep.
11:59There's his, this is his other mask, so he'll wear those, too, tonight.
12:05Off with the, with the jaw, so we leave a little bit of latex on there.
12:11And then that's elastic, so the jaw moves just like that.
12:17I'll see, like, this is another set.
12:19This is a set done by Victor.
12:20And it's all the same sculpt with different paint jobs and different accessories.
12:28Like, obviously, it's the same mask.
12:32Different mohawks.
12:34Different paint jobs.
12:37And we go through.
12:39Got the skinny.
12:41The Joe.
12:44The Scotty.
12:47The Hawks.
12:50You can kind of get it, and then same thing with the doctor, or the Stevie.
12:55Then we go into another paint scheme with, obviously, different accessories again.
13:02Same sculpts.
13:03We tend to stick with the same sculpts for an entire album cycle.
13:08And then for this, when we redo them, it's more of just a progression of each character.
13:14It's the same character, just growing up or morphing slightly.
13:20These are my two alternates for the tour.
13:23And they're just a little more decked out than the other ones.
13:27So this one's got a wet specimen in it.
13:31So that's a diaphanized frog.
13:32So let me, uh, let me, thank you.
13:40So I've got LEDs rigged through the mask.
13:45And then usually that phone holds that down.
13:48So I'll turn that on.
13:50And then it comes out the top.
13:54Right through there.
13:58So usually I do a specimen mask each show, or like one or two for tour.
14:05I just started it last fall tour.
14:08But this one is, uh, definitely my favorite.
14:15Uh, yeah.
14:16And then just the inside is just some adhesive foam.
14:19I kind of foam it out different each time.
14:21Sometimes the mask is poured thick.
14:23And so it needs less foam.
14:25This one's pretty thin, so I put a lot in there.
14:27This one, this is a thicker mask, so I, I didn't need any foam in it.
14:41Just put a lot of, a lot of cheesecloth on this one.
14:44And it was honestly, it was on an off day.
14:47We stopped home.
14:48So I had like two or three hours or something of just rushing and fucking get it done.
14:55I want another mask.
14:56So this one came out like that.
15:00Usually the ones that you don't even think about come out the best.
15:03Like when you're just like, get paint on it.
15:06Get it out.
15:08Those ones are usually my favorite.
15:11So while we're talking about masks, one of our mask sculptors is our very own Joe Gall,
15:17who is our guitar player.
15:18I'd like to let him talk about some of his designs.
15:22All right.
15:22Well, for this album cycle, usually like I started off doing like pumpkins and other just like
15:30scarecrow masks, one-offs and stuff.
15:32But for this album cycle, they chose Skinny's mask is my design and mine, of course.
15:39But we all, we all make the masks as well and paint them.
15:44So like from start to finish, we can all cast paint or this newer Jason kind of hockey mask
15:53thing.
15:54I redid from a pre, one of our previous sculptors, Jason Kisner had like the X face of teeth were
16:01like all viney and stuff, but I just kind of like clean them up and added the triangles
16:06that are on the sides as well.
16:09So it's just a little bit more clean.
16:11There's an updated look a little bit.
16:14They're fun.
16:16We're all horror fans too.
16:17We have a blow molded head armature called the head head from the Cleveland company that's
16:24actually huge in the industry called Monster Makers.
16:27And it's like a one size fits all head armature and you just start slapping clay on there, making
16:35it to whatever you want it to be.
16:36And then molding just involves taking a gypsum compound.
16:42It's called UltraCal 30.
16:44You can do it with HydraCal too.
16:47It makes a weaker mold and they start to get blurrier quicker.
16:51But it basically just plastered and it turns to stone.
16:55And if there's enough like shapes on it, like with ducks, ears and like this crazy stuff,
17:01the mold has to like go around it so you don't undercut yourself because the latex will never
17:06go in there without like creating bubbles and whatnot.
17:11So once you get the mold done, most of the time it'll separate perfectly and you clean
17:18all the clay out of it.
17:19And then after the moisture gets out of the gypsum, it's ready to pour latex in.
17:27And so you just do that, kind of let it sit there, fill it all the way up, let it sit
17:31there for about an hour and then dump it back out.
17:34And a day or two later, you can pull it out and start painting.
17:38Well, for this set, I just figured it's Halloween, man.
17:42How can you go wrong with orange and black?
17:44And then the first time I saw this band, I don't remember the year, it was probably like
17:512016, 2017, just as a fan, they had black masks with orange UVX face.
18:00And I was like, dude, I just remember being so far away from stage, but seeing how they
18:04popped, I was like, this is fucking awesome.
18:07So I figured I'd do a little throwback and, you know, put my own spin on them and stuff.
18:13And then Simon's, his accessory for this one, this mohawk was, I think I just took like dowel
18:22rods and just started breaking them and then taking a Dremel and sharpening them.
18:27And then they're just attached from the inside with super glue and then I latex them in so
18:32it's all smooth on the inside.
18:38Skinny's is always fun with the dread wraps.
18:43Just zone out and wrap dreads.
18:47It's, it really makes the mask, you know, like the black dreads would be cool, but it just
18:53adds a little bit more pop.
18:54And then the gloss black in select areas gives it a little more contrast.
18:59Ryan, our bass player, he painted that set in the back.
19:03Uh, really muted colors, you know, subtle copper and gray.
19:13Definitely a cool set.
19:17And then we did a collab.
19:19I did my crown on that one and then I believe Victor did the mohawk on this one.
19:27So it's fun to just change it up every mask, you know, like just the little features just
19:35completely change it.
19:37You know, like the, going from the bullets to the hair, like small stuff, but it really
19:44changes the whole feel of the mask.
19:47I'm a huge horror fanatic.
19:49I have monsters tattooed all over me and stuff.
19:52So like, I always try to like, on these tours, I like to make a really gory one.
19:57So this is this year's.
19:58It's a little bit darker than last year's, but yeah, I just kind of do some distressing
20:03with ink.
20:04And I just kind of kept them dark and high contrast, the black on white.
20:09And then the red, the blood, I just poured all over its bladder everywhere.
20:15They're super fun.
20:18And some reason like the blood on like my mask and some others, like it just gives it another
20:24in photographs and in video, it gives it another look.
20:27Like somehow like my implied teeth kind of pop more in here.
20:31It looks more like the mouth's open.
20:33It's just something that the blood does.
20:35And yeah, I love these bloody ones.
20:38During one of our, during a couple of our songs, the water drummers wear these extra masks.
20:45They're like kind of bent bandaged up patients kind of, and they wear these helmets with them.
20:54And this is kind of a throwback to one of the older members of the band Schmatz.
20:58He used to wear something like this with like a flashlight on the side.
21:02And sometimes he'd have like eyepieces or whatever, but it's just kind of like your standard army
21:08helmet or tactical helmet or whatever.
21:12And then we just kind of adorn them with other pieces that we make in our shop.
21:17But they look cool.
21:19Extra accessories, different costumes.
21:21We loved all the theatrical part of it.
21:24Alright, everybody else's is hanging up.
21:26I don't really do that.
21:28I kind of just, it's organized chaos, kind of.
21:33It's actually folded, so we're fine.
21:35There's my red shit.
21:36We're wearing this tonight.
21:38Jessica Haney makes all this stuff.
21:42Mine gets really filthy.
21:45My bad.
21:46Got the Zildjian patch on the back.
21:50Hell yeah.
21:51I like that.
21:52Yeah, so that's the best layer.
21:56Just a red work shirt.
22:01Good and gross.
22:02This thing is soaked.
22:03So I can't wait to put that on.
22:05I got red pants.
22:08I don't really wear them because I'm playing drums.
22:10So I got these shorts that have been with me since day one.
22:17These are my alternate ones.
22:19I haven't worn them that much.
22:22I think I only wore them on St. Patrick's Day or something.
22:26The Static X Tour, but I like those ones a lot too.
22:30That's just random nonsense.
22:32I got an alien in there.
22:34Chris gave that to me.
22:35Some sunglasses and then just random makeups.
22:38And then I don't know where my green stuff is.
22:43That's a really good question, honestly.
22:48I'll have to find that and get back to you.
22:51So this has also been with me since day one.
22:55I love this.
22:57This is honestly my favorite piece of wardrobe to wear.
23:00Just simple, illegal alien.
23:03There we are.
23:05Yeah, so this one is from, what is it, Half Baked I believe.
23:09Dude's got that same patch so we just took it and flipped it upside down.
23:15This is just a UFO for highlighting the illegal alien thing.
23:19And then I got four and then I lost one of them.
23:24But it was three so I had 43 for my bullets.
23:28But they're gone.
23:30And then I got a little Perry's Music Museum patch.
23:34That's pretty sick.
23:35And then these are, I don't even know, I don't know what that is.
23:41I'll play with yours if you play with mine.
23:44I didn't know that's on there.
23:45So that's fine.
23:46But yeah, there's that.
23:48And then a simple green jumpsuit.
23:51Everybody's got the same one.
23:53That's it.
23:56So it's honestly not the greatest because these sleeves always unroll.
24:00So I gotta cut those off.
24:02But, you know, we'll get there.
24:05Everybody's got their own personal little patches on things.
24:12This is Jenkins, so Joe Gall.
24:15I'm sure he'll come over and talk to you about that part time.
24:21There's Scotty's.
24:22He's got the little snake that is unbelievably held on tour after tour.
24:30So these ones, it's pretty much just the patches that are all different or the buttons.
24:35You know, he's got the Indians and the straight edge Scotty.
24:40And then with the red wardrobe, everybody's kind of got like a different layer over their vest.
24:46So like this, it could come off.
24:48I take mine off because it's just so much stuff to play in.
24:53It kills me.
24:55Everybody's front and back is completely customized.
24:59Everything's different.
25:00Jessica killed it.
25:03Kilt.
25:05I don't even know whose that is.
25:07I think this is Skinny's.
25:11Probably wrong.
25:15But yeah.
25:16And we're back to, back to green.
25:22And black.
25:24And Steve's.
25:27Inset fest.
25:29Thanks for coming and checking out what we do.
25:33What we love.
25:35All the stuff that's going to be on these stages.
25:38You should come check out on this tour.
25:42And Sonic Temple next year, next May.
25:45And then we'll be in Europe next year.
25:46So like, yeah, get this out there.
25:49Get it worldwide and come check us out at a show.
25:51We'll have all new sets of masks.
25:54Maybe wardrobe even.
25:56Who knows.
25:57Whole new looks.
25:58All the time.
25:59So.
26:00We're always making stuff.
26:01Call the devil.
26:02Always clean.
26:03Hell yeah.
