Could Drake Maye actually improve this year?? Well, reports suggest that his 'mental game' is "improving"
Transcript
00:00There was stuff around yesterday about the Jags possibly being in on A.J. Brown.
00:05Yeah, there was dueling.
00:08Well, first on Up and Adams with Kay Adams,
00:12James Palmer said Howie Roseman is interested in still shopping A.J. Brown around.
00:18So there may be some competition.
00:21What are they holding out for?
00:23Are they holding out for a first?
00:25The highest bidder, probably.
00:26No, but do they think that they're...
00:28What about the Chiefs?
00:29Do you think they'll re-enter it, considering Rashi Rice?
00:32They want a first.
00:33I would imagine.
00:34So, yeah, I mean, Jalen Waddell went for a first round,
00:37and who do you think's a better wide receiver, Jaden Waddell or A.J. Brown?
00:41Waddell.
00:41Well, I would say A.J. Brown.
00:43A.J. Brown, I think.
00:44I think they're pretty close.
00:46Are you okay with giving up a first round, though, for him?
00:48Yeah, I got no problem with that.
00:49He's, what, 20?
00:51I want to say he's like 28 or something like that, right?
00:53Yeah, but it's not just...
00:55He's one of those guys where it's like, don't you see it's not just about the age?
00:59It's about the miles on him?
01:01Like, he's got...
01:02See, now you're going down the Giannis road.
01:05He's got...
01:06He's got...
01:06Well, I don't want Giannis for Jalen, but he's got the knee concern
01:10that dates back to when he got traded out of Tennessee.
01:13They were saying that then, and his numbers have gone down.
01:16Now, the Philly system last year was puke-worthy, so some of it is that.
01:21So, his last two years, every year, he's had over 1,000 yards receiving,
01:24and he had, what, seven touchdowns in both seasons,
01:27and he played in 13 games in the 2024 season
01:31and still had over 1,000 yards.
01:33He played in 15 games last year, so big deal.
01:35You missed two games.
01:36I feel like everybody does that.
01:38But prior to that, he played in 17, 17, 17, 16.
01:43So, the whole A.J. Brown injury thing,
01:46I'm not really buying it because you might have heard about it,
01:49but it was never at the forefront of anything.
01:53Like, everybody's like, oh, he's always wanted to...
01:54You never saw it on the field.
01:55No.
01:55Is what you're saying.
01:56No.
01:57978 texter.
01:58I just read these because they're fun, I guess.
01:59I love how Greg refuses to mention that he had Aaron Hernandez
02:03as a weekly guest on the old show.
02:06I don't refuse to mention that.
02:07We talk about that all the time.
02:09I didn't know that.
02:10Yes.
02:10What's wrong with that?
02:12Right.
02:12You didn't know he was a murderer.
02:13Like, what are you doing?
02:14I mean, I didn't.
02:16How did he seem to you?
02:17He seemed okay.
02:18I mean, he was not the best guest ever.
02:21Wasn't loquacious?
02:23Loquacious, what does that mean?
02:24I wouldn't describe it that way.
02:26So, like, talks a lot?
02:27Yeah.
02:28Exactly what that means.
02:29I appreciate that.
02:30Fear of silence.
02:31Jalen Waddell had 910 yards last year.
02:34He dealt, you know, he still played in 16 games.
02:36The year before that, he had 744 yards.
02:39And he's 27.
02:40And A.J. Brown, let me just get his age.
02:43A.J. Brown is 28, maybe probably soon to be 29.
02:49That was interesting yesterday.
02:51The sub-stacker reporting that word inside word out of Gillette
02:57is that Drake May has improved immeasurably when it comes to the mental part of his game.
03:07I don't know what that means.
03:08I mean, we're not even at OTAs yet.
03:11But, I mean, I'm there for it if that leads to what we hope would be a better season from
03:21Drake May, perhaps.
03:22How do you know that when they haven't done any organized on-field?
03:27That's the whispers.
03:28Like, you hear the whispers.
03:29But even with the whispers, like, their official OTAs don't start until May 27th.
03:33Right?
03:34So, I mean, you know, you're expecting somebody in the meeting going,
03:39oh, wow, going through his playbook and what he's shown in the classroom.
03:42Yeah.
03:42He looks really good.
03:43Like, Wiggy, from your experience, what are these guys doing together at this point in the offseason
03:49that would lead people in the building to go, wow, he's going to be so much better than last year?
03:56All he could really be doing if he's here, and I don't know where he is,
04:00if he's here and he's working out, like, because all they're doing is offseason lifting and running and conditioning.
04:06But if he is here in the building, he's just probably meeting with Josh McDaniels.
04:10Yeah.
04:11In the positioning group.
04:13Okay.
04:13And maybe after, you know, when he's done, he goes outside and he, you know,
04:18he just runs routes with the wide receivers.
04:20But there's no, like, defense or anything like that.
04:23There's not an actual real practice going on.
04:25It is kind of funny.
04:26It's just, like, they asked Drake to identify some front, and he said,
04:30they're like, well, Super Bowl again.
04:32There it is.
04:33Super MVP right here.
04:34He didn't know that last year at this time.
04:37It's just stupid.
04:38It's, like, so dumb.
04:40Maybe they're basing it off the toss that he had with Shime.
04:43That's about all they can do.
04:45Or maybe his new nickname, Big Dog.
04:48I mean, that's what you're – I mean, that's all he's doing now with these guys right now
04:52is he's out there, you know, lining up.
04:54Hey, after we finish workouts, let's go on the field, and, you know,
04:58we're going to run slant routes.
04:59We're going to run go routes.
05:00What defines win-wise or just overall finish for the season?
05:10What defines a regression for him?
05:12A regression for him?
05:14Not a playoff team.
05:17I think it's his performance because even if they're a playoff team –
05:22and let's say he goes out there and he throws 24 touchdowns.
05:25He never wants to judge anybody.
05:28No, let's say he goes – I'm going to tell you.
05:29If he goes out there and he throws 24 touchdowns and 15 or 16 interceptions,
05:33that's a regression.
05:35They could still make the playoffs.
05:37I would say it's a regression if he has another shoulder-type injury that, you know –
05:43Well, you hate when athletes are a little bit hurt, so that would be a huge regression for you.
05:48You'd be like, unacceptable.
05:49Get him out there.
05:50Bego, my whole thing is you can't make the club in the tub.
05:53But based off of the –
05:54The guy completely turned on Roman Anthony.
05:56He was – and Roman was so nice to you, Curtis.
05:58Yeah, and look at how right I was.
06:00Let's go back to that morning in Hilton heaven.
06:02You're like, Curtis, you're so negative.
06:04Now it's literally everybody's opinion.
06:06Wait, was that me or Greg?
06:07No, that was Wiggy.
06:08Oh.
06:09So what's a regression?
06:11Because I think it's –
06:12It's a step back.
06:13No, but I think it's the statistics.
06:15Okay.
06:15If he throws 24 touchdowns and 16, 14 interceptions, that's a regression.
06:21But that team could still make the playoffs.
06:24I don't know if it's a regression, but if he coughs the freaking ball up all the time,
06:29that's going to be a major sticking point.
06:31How many interceptions did he throw last year?
06:33He had eight interceptions, but I'm not just talking about interceptions.
06:36I'm talking about fumbles.
06:37But that's all part of it.
06:38Strip sacks.
06:39Ball security.
06:39Right.
06:40Like if his ball security continues to be a major issue,
06:44and it wasn't a major issue last year, but it was his rookie year,
06:46and it was something that hung around, especially in the Houston playoff game.
06:52Like that was gross on both sides.
06:55If that hangs around this year, I think people go, that's where he's not perfect.
06:59That's going to be the kind of thing that holds his back.
07:01Right, but see, the thing about the ball security,
07:03and I think that's a great point, Mango, is you'll look and go,
07:05oh, well, the left tackle got smoked.
07:07That's why it was a strip sack.
07:10But when you start to talk about the 18 interceptions or the 16 interceptions,
07:14you'll go, that was a bad read.
07:16Why did he throw that football?
07:17If you're going to look at it statistically, if you give him A.J. Brown
07:21and he regresses, that's a problem.
07:23Guys, he's not going to have as good a year as he did last year.
07:26Like that was a spectacular season.
07:28Right, but what makes you sit up and go, oh, uh-oh,
07:31is this like a C.J. Stroud type thing?
07:34But I'm just saying on Greg's point, if A.J. Brown comes,
07:36I mean, he had 31 touchdowns, 8 picks, a passer rating of 114.
07:40Like he was spectacular.
07:42Right.
07:43So if he goes 35 and he has, let's say he goes 35 touchdowns
07:47and he has 12 interceptions, that's not a regression.
07:51Not at all.
07:51But that's, you know, that's not as good as far as numbers,
07:58as far as interceptions from last year to this year.
08:01That's why I'm saying I think it has to be not just the numbers, Wiggy,
08:04as you always preach.
08:05Right.
08:06It's got to be situational.
08:07Right.
08:07If he's putting his team in bad positions because he's coughing the ball up
08:11or he's throwing dumb interceptions,
08:14that's going to be the kind of thing where people point at it and go,
08:16I don't know, maybe it was just those teams they were playing last year.
08:19Now, mental regression, like if he's calling guys the wrong name
08:22or something like that, right?
08:24Right.
