Drake Maye back? Thoughts on Maye's Performance-Thoughts on the team's performance?
Transcript
00:00Some might call it a redemption win for Drake May.
00:04How is everyone this morning?
00:06Redemption win is spot on.
00:08I am fired up today.
00:09Okay.
00:11How are you?
00:12I couldn't be more fired up.
00:13I love being alive at this hour.
00:15Okay.
00:15Wiggy, everything A-OK over there?
00:17Yes.
00:17Finally, the real Drake May.
00:20Can you please stand up?
00:21Okay.
00:21It's going to be a while.
00:22The time for that jersey was not today.
00:24That was a week ago.
00:25Oh.
00:26What?
00:27What do you mean?
00:27You played great yesterday.
00:28Right.
00:29Like, if you're a foxhole guy, you wear that jersey a week ago.
00:33Yeah, but everything was in doubt a week ago, Curtis.
00:35I couldn't stand it.
00:37Well, but now you're just a bandwagoner.
00:39No, I'm not.
00:40I said all week, I believe that guy was in there somewhere.
00:44You said the highlight of your life above your wedding was playing catch with that man a week ago in
00:49his lowest moment.
00:50You did not wear the jersey, and today you're wearing it.
00:53Yeah, because he deserves it.
00:55Like, just because this is still a meritocracy, Curtis.
00:59Like, you still have to be good in order to receive support.
01:02And I still believed all week that that guy was in there somewhere.
01:04I just didn't expect to see it this week.
01:06I'm very glad I did.
01:08Good he was.
01:10A couple turnovers.
01:12Not really his fault, though.
01:15Stared down Josh Allen and that Buffalo Bills team and came away with a win.
01:23And so, in that defense, you know, you look week to week, Wickey.
01:27They could not stop Jacksonville.
01:31Struggled against that team.
01:32Right.
01:32And yesterday, minus, you know, a couple weak moments in the fourth quarter, they were really, really good at stopping
01:39the run yesterday.
01:40Yeah, I mean, I think it was through, like, the first three quarters where they were talking about it.
01:44They had only given up, I don't know what the number was, rushing.
01:47And then all of a sudden, you know, Buffalo started to, you know, Cook had a couple back-to-back
01:52runs.
01:52But, you know, defensively against the run, what you were able to do to Josh Allen and make him play
01:58from within the pocket rather than him getting out and extending plays and getting them off-scrift plays that are
02:04usually big hits.
02:06And you did that without your best defensive player, Christian Gonzalez.
02:09I think through three quarters, Josh Allen had, like, one rushing yard.
02:12Yeah, I think he only finished the game with four.
02:14Yeah, so.
02:15I have to say, that was bigger than the win last year against Buffalo.
02:18That was the biggest regular season win they've had in several years.
02:22You cannot overstate the importance of that.
02:25You go to that building.
02:26You're without Barmore.
02:28You're without Gonzalez, who's been your best player by a wide margin.
02:31And obviously without A.J. Brown.
02:33And you come together in that drive, in that spot, where I thought the aggressive game plan by Vrabel was
02:40freaking awesome.
02:41Going for it on fourth down.
02:42That was a sign of massive respect to Josh Allen.
02:45I mean, multiple times.
02:47Fourth and three, not fourth and one.
02:50And I just, I watched that game and I see it and I just juxtaposed it to the Kubiak and
02:56the Raiders approach against the Chiefs, the afternoon game.
03:00Vrabel was just so on top of it last night, or yesterday afternoon in Buffalo.
03:04That was so massive.
03:05And for the Bills to lose that game, when the Patriots were in that spot, you're in your brand new
03:12facility, you have the MVP, you have everything going for you, and you do that yesterday, what a pathetic loss
03:20by the Bills.
03:20And you're 3-0.
03:21And I think the one thing that really stood out for me, I know they were aggressive all game long,
03:25but especially at the end of the game, after Josh Allen threw that interception, and talk about just throwing a
03:30ball up into a meeting room.
03:31And when he threw that ball up, and then you got the ball back, and second down, you try to
03:37play action pass, and then obviously third down, you had the naked bootleg to Hunter Henry, which led to the
03:43first down, basically iced it.
03:44But that just showed me that, hey, they weren't just going to run the ball three times, let Buffalo call
03:48timeout, and then put the ball back in.
03:50And that shows confidence, and you're a quarterback in the sense like, all right, we're going to put it in
03:55your hands, don't go out there and make boneheaded decisions.
03:59Did you think they were going to throw it there?
04:00No.
04:01No.
04:01I thought on third and 10, no shot.
04:02I thought they ran the ball, timeout, they tried to go for it.
04:05You're talking about after the play to Chisholm, where it was incomplete?
04:09So when they had the ball, and it was 29-26, and they ran the ball in first down.
04:15Play action, not second down.
04:16Play action, second down, incomplete.
04:17Yep, to Chisholm.
04:18Third down.
04:19I did not think they were going to throw it there.
04:21No, I knew they were going to throw it.
04:22At that point, the clock was stopped.
04:24I thought they were going to force a timeout and then punt it back to them.
04:27I think Buffalo had all three of their timeouts at that point in time.
04:30They made two.
04:31They would have been left with one after.
04:33So I think that you were just showing like, all right, if we get one first down, it's a wrap.
04:37Game's over.
04:38And so I think I felt like, all right, they were going to try to throw it at something safe,
04:42and that's what they did.
04:43It was a naked bootleg.
04:44If it's not there, Drake, keep running.
04:47Stay in bounds.
04:48Make them burn the timeout.
04:49But Hunter Henry was there on the nice little play.
04:52So, yeah.
04:52I like, and certainly Josh McDaniels has been criticized since the start of the season for conservative play calling.
05:01And it seemed like they reacted to that.
05:04Courtesy brought up Mike Vrabel being aggressive.
05:07And I feel like the coaching staff went into this game, and we'll get to talk to Mike Vrabel about
05:14it.
05:14He'll be here at 7.30 this morning with victory shots.
05:18And so I feel like they went into this one with a little bit of a different approach or at
05:24least said, we're going to go up there, and we're not going to leave anything on the table, and we're
05:29going to do our best to win this game.
05:31So I, and they do.
05:32And it's a huge win, and this team is 2-2, where you had, many had hoped they would be
05:38after the first four difficult games of the season.
05:40And I think also, Wiggy brings it up, like the confidence in your quarterback to have the week that they
05:44had where you've got Boomer Esiason on Monday saying that if he was Mike Vrabel, he'd bench him.
05:48And now you've got, you're showing to Drake that you really are not just talking the talk, you're walking the
05:54walk.
05:54You're all in on him.
05:55And for him to show up in a big moment like that, the confidence has to be building every single
06:00week now moving forward.
06:01Yeah, and that's the thing.
06:02It has to, now it has to domino effect into next week against a team that has a very good
06:08defense that a lot of people are like, yeah, they're not, this should be an easy win on the schedule.
06:13But now you look at them and they're playing, and the Raiders, they're playing well.
06:17This is a game where we need to now see, like Drake May should look like what he looked like
06:23yesterday.
06:24If there's 17 games that they play, 15 games, he should look like that.
06:30So does that win get him back to pre-regression status?
06:34No.
06:35Oh, it doesn't.
06:36No, no, all that does is basically say, okay, we're going to pause right here.
06:40Oh, okay, you're in a pause.
06:42The regression is paused.
06:44Yeah, because let's say he goes out next week and he doesn't have a good game.
06:47We're right back to where we started.
06:50We're pausing.
06:51This is what we expect.
06:52Now I need to see him next week, the week after that, the week after that, and then maybe you
07:00have a bad game.
07:00I mean, he's a quarter of the way through the season, and he leads the NFL in interceptions and turnovers.
07:04I mean, so it's not like he's all of a sudden a great player.
07:08He played well yesterday.
07:09I will also say that the confidence Greg had been on that, I know Wiggy and Greg argued back and
07:15forth, it was entirely confidence.
07:18Like, I'm sorry, like that was a guy yesterday where someone on the coaching staff said to him, if you're
07:25going to fail, fail, you know, if you're going to be a bear, be a grizzly.
07:28Like, go out there, be yourself, and he looked like a different person.
07:32Yeah, because he wasn't making boneheaded decisions.
07:33But, no, but he was free.
07:35He wasn't tentative.
07:36Yeah, I know, but that comes from not making boneheaded decisions.
07:40Like, when you look at yesterday's game, did he throw the ball into a situation at all in that game
07:46where you go, what the hell are you doing here?
07:48Yeah, the one to Hunter Henry that was, there was one play that he.
07:52But for the most part, he was not making any boneheaded decisions.
07:55When something wasn't there, he said, you know.
07:56When you're confident, you don't make boneheaded decisions.
07:58You call it confidence.
07:59Confidence, I call it sometimes you're overconfident, and that's why you press.
08:03Because when you don't have confidence, you know what you don't do?
08:05You don't throw the ball.
08:06You're not aggressive, and you're just kind of sitting back.
08:10But when we looked at Drake May, he was doing too much.
08:13That's why you heard I talked about it.
08:15Ty talked about it.
08:16Brian Hoyer talked about it.
08:18Like, all guys that played the game.
08:19It's not a fact of him losing card.
08:22It's he's overconfident and pushing and pressing.
08:25But there are so many things that go into it, and it has been unfair at times to put almost
08:33all of it on Drake.
08:34For instance, yesterday, for the majority of that game, he had, finally, a pretty clean pocket.
08:42And he is finally able to.
08:43That's an excuse.
08:44He's had a clean pocket all season.
08:46Yes, it is, Greg.
08:49And when I talked about the blame, 80% of why you were where you were is on Drake May's
08:55plate.
08:55You're the runner-up for the MVP from last year.
09:00Your expectations are you want to carry the football team.
09:04Everything that you do, if you want to be in the world of the Josh Allens and the Patrick Mahomes,
09:09then everything you do has to look like it did yesterday.
09:13You putting the team on your back.
09:15You dropping dimes in the corner of the end zone.
09:17You stepping up on a two-point conversion, not making a bonehead play, and getting to remind you of Stephen
09:23Lake.
09:23Stevenson, everything you do when you're that guy is you have to show you can put the team on your
09:29back.
09:29And that's what he did yesterday.
09:31I agree with you, but I do think that it starts with confidence.
09:33He looked so confident yesterday.
09:35In the weeks prior, he just didn't.
09:37It looked like a different guy.
09:38And what yesterday showed me wasn't like a, okay, I'm going to go back on my regression take or anything
09:43like that.
09:44I think it showed me that last year was not a fluke.
09:47Like, Drake May last year was not a fluke.
09:48He's still in there.
09:49He just needs to come back out.
09:51And we saw that he was able to come back out yesterday.
09:53Because he didn't make not one boneheaded decision.
09:56Because he looked confident.
09:57Right?
09:57It comes down to not making a bone.
09:59Because when we always, like, we're going back and forth with the confidence.
10:02Yeah, I think confidence is a part of it.
10:04But I think the problem was, he was too overconfident early.
10:08If you have no confidence.
10:09You thought he was overconfident in Jacksonville?
10:11I think he's pressing the issue.
10:12He looks like a different human being.
10:14He looks like he peed his pants in Jacksonville.
10:16Yeah, but he's trying to make every throw.
10:17He's trying to make every play.
10:18To me, that's a guy who's pressing the issue.
10:20Who's not confident.
10:22No, no, no.
10:22Who's trying to do too much, which leads to poor mistakes.
10:25Like, it leads to poor mistakes.
10:27I don't think if you would ask Drake May, going into Jacksonville, say,
10:30Hey, do you have confidence in your game?
10:33I think Drake May would have told him.
10:35When he was looking at his hand running to the sideline after fumbling it?
10:38Yeah, if you would have told him.
10:39And I think Vrabel.
10:39He looks lost.
10:40Even Vrabel said, that's a guy who, and Vrabel, we asked him.
10:43He goes, no, he doesn't not lack confidence.
10:46Like, that's the difference that I think you guys and I are kind of different on.
10:51I don't think he was lacking confidence in his ability.
10:54I just think he was trying to do too much.
10:56You're a tough grader.
10:58If you were a professor at college, you would be a tough grader.
11:01And I appreciate that.
11:02No, I would have gave him an A for yesterday's performance.
11:04Yeah, but that A doesn't get him back to anywhere near passing the class from your perspective.
11:09Well, 1A is good, but if you failed three other tests before that.
11:14You're not getting through coach's class.
11:15I'll tell you that much.
11:16No, you still got a couple extra tests.
11:17Let's see how you do.
11:18Unless you're willing to pay a little money to the GoFundMe for a potential trip to the Bahamas or something
11:24like that.
11:25Then you get an A for me.
11:26Why would you say he's back?
11:29I'm very encouraged.
11:30When you say back, I think, again, I think many of us, I will say myself included, were really, really
11:39hard on him when it's the entire operation.
11:43And when they're able to run the football, when he's able to get some time protection-wise, and I think
11:52also that some of it gets into the aggressiveness on the offensive side of the football,
11:59that you have a coach who sometimes wants to lean on defense to win football games.
12:05And I can't wait to talk to Mike Vrabel at 730 because he's going to be fired up and he's
12:12going to be here with victory shots.
12:13And I think a lot of that was the way in which that coaching staff got these guys into this
12:18game.
12:18But I think a lot of that was the way in which that coaching staff got these guys into this
12:19game.
