00:00This is something that's right up Ted's alley because Ted has been one of the first on this train, even
00:05when many people were skeptical, Ted was all about Drake May.
00:09And Drake May apparently has been very impressive this offseason to the point where this is Greg Bedard on BostonSportsJournal
00:18.com.
00:19By the way, if you do not have a subscription to Boston Sports Journal, you should.
00:21It's a very good website and there's many good people who write for it and do podcasts as well.
00:26So let's take a listen to Greg Bedard talking about what he is hearing about Drake May.
00:33And they're telling people this, which is look out for the quarterback this year.
00:37You thought he was good last year. Wait till you see it now.
00:41And now, look, it's hard to tell. It's hard to tell physically.
00:44Like I look at the pictures and I was like, oh, you know, Drake looks a little bit thicker.
00:48But that's not it. From what I understand, it's the mentality.
00:52It's how much he knows the offense even more.
00:54It's how he has the tools that are in this offense.
01:00And so, you know, along the lines of what you're talking about, that's a great indicator of what's to come.
01:05But, of course, he's going to have to do it on the field.
01:08How does that make you feel?
01:09I love it.
01:10Love it.
01:11I'm so proud.
01:12Man, I love hearing that.
01:15The thing is, when he can take his brain out of the game, in the sense, like, you know, like
01:19the Japanese like to say,
01:20it should be a no-mind game.
01:22You know, when you rep things over and over and over again, you just, your body just takes over.
01:27You've seen it all.
01:28You just react.
01:29This offense, you saw it.
01:31Like, Brady became a supercomputer because he just knew what to do in every situation.
01:37Josh gives him options.
01:39He'll be able to make more audibles.
01:41He'll see read defenses.
01:42He'll get them into better plays.
01:44And he won't be thinking as much.
01:46He'll take the brain out of it.
01:47And he'll just be able to play football because he's getting more comfortable with this scheme from Josh McDaniels.
01:53Now, I know you, Heath, Ted thinks they have an average roster.
01:55Will he have better numbers if Drake is improved with that average roster?
01:58This roster is an average roster.
02:00Really?
02:01Oh, yeah.
02:01Yeah, it's an average roster.
02:04I mean, here's the thing.
02:05A.J. Brown, an improved running game, is going to make a huge difference.
02:09Sure.
02:10And hopefully a better line, too.
02:12That's the hope, yeah.
02:15About a tougher schedule.
02:18That's the thing.
02:19That's the hard part.
02:20So, same numbers.
02:21If he stays flat, is that like a good year for Drake?
02:24Yes, yes, yes.
02:25I think so.
02:26Because he had a great year.
02:27Yeah, yeah.
02:28I would say absolutely, yes.
02:29But he threw 31 touchdowns last year.
02:31Stafford had 46.
02:32But he was an MVP.
02:34Oh, yeah.
02:34Right.
02:34Great point.
02:35Yeah.
02:353-1, 4-1 right there.
02:37Yep.
02:3747 sacks.
02:39He can't take that many, right?
02:41No, no, no, no, no.
02:42No, definitely.
02:42So, he might get like an extra 50 throws.
02:44He was on pace for like 65 sacks.
02:47They got better as the season had gone on.
02:48But, yeah, you knock down the – but you know what?
02:50He won't be holding on the ball as long either because he'll know where to go with the football.
02:55So, the sacks should come down now that he's more comfortable in the system.
02:58It's funny.
02:58You know, because we've been talking about the third-year quarterback and what happens in your third year.
03:04And, obviously, the example everyone points at is Josh Allen.
03:06And that truly was when he made his big jump.
03:09And if you take a look at some of the biggest names like, you know, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe
03:13Burrow,
03:13it's the end of the second year into the third year.
03:16And it kind of seems like the first year is about the learning.
03:20The second year seems to be the stabilizing.
03:24And with some of these guys, it seems like year three is most likely when the game slows down for
03:29you.
03:29And what does that mean?
03:31Exactly what you said.
03:32When the game slows down, that means you're not thinking as much about all of the little things that don't
03:38make you a great quarterback.
03:39You're thinking more about, like, how to make a great play.
03:42And, instead, you can see the field better.
03:45You immediately know from the set that's in front of you 15 things that you're not going to do.
03:51Instead of for that first time in that first year when you get up there where it's all the speed
03:54is new.
03:55The size of the people coming at you is new.
03:58And in year three, that seems to be according from all the things that I'm seeing in stats-wise of
04:03all the greats.
04:04Not greats, but, like, the modern good quarterbacks that we have here.
04:07Even Justin Herbert.
04:08You know, his second year into third year was a good year.
04:11Jalen Hurts, isn't that kind of when he became what he was?
04:14I'm taking a look here at his numbers.
04:15So he spent that one year as a backup.
04:18Year two as a starter where he kind of found his footing.
04:20And then, yeah, in year three, he was an MVP finalist.
04:22Yeah.
04:23And what I love more than anything is that it's the second year in a row he has the same
04:26offensive coordinator.
04:27Yeah.
04:28Like, consistency with the offensive coordinator is key.
04:31And having a really good offensive coordinator is so important for the development of these young quarterbacks.
04:35It's huge.
04:36Am I crazy to think 5,000 yards is possible, like, as a goal?
04:40I mean, with as much as teams throw, and you're getting A.J. Brown, and as good as Drake is.
04:45With A.J. Brown, I'd feel confident that could be achievable.
04:49And that's only been done nine times, I believe.
04:51Brady did it twice.
04:51I mean, you got three.
04:52He's did a bunch.
04:53Romeo Dobbs is, you know, what, an eight.
04:55You hope he's an 800-yard kind of guy.
04:58With A.J. Brown, who's, you know, a 1,000-plus kind of guy.
05:03Is McDaniels the kind of coordinator who would throw often enough?
05:06Or would he, does he try to, like, stay balanced?
05:07He likes to feed Ramondre every now and then.
05:10You know what?
05:10He's a game-playing guy.
05:12He goes from week to week.
05:13You never really know.
05:13But they're going to run the, try and run the football.
05:16You saw what they did.
05:19So, it's interesting.
05:20You know, I could see maybe the numbers coming down just because I think they're trying to
05:23establish a run game.
05:24But it's a running game to set up the pass.
05:26So, it's, look, he's going to be phenomenal.
05:29I love hearing that from Bedard.
05:31That's what you want to hear.
05:32The kids, the more and more confidence he gets, guys, oh, you're going to see just a
05:37brilliant player out there.
05:39He's brilliant.
05:39He's brilliant.
