Is Drake Maye the favorite for the award?! Did Matthew Stafford hurt his chances after last night's performance? NFL MVP race heats up! Recency bias is real!
00:00So last night on primetime television, Matthew Stafford basically handed the MVP trophy to Drake May.
00:07And courtesy of old friend Mike Cadillac has these stats for us.
00:10Oh, Mike's great.
00:11So shout out to Mike for these.
00:13Drake May and Matthew Stafford have played six common opponents.
00:16The Panthers, the Saints, the Titans, the Bucs, the Ravens, and the Falcons.
00:21In those six games, Drake May is 6-0 with a 69, nice, percent completion percentage.
00:271,495 yards, so basically 1,500 yards, 13 touchdowns, three picks.
00:33Oh, and on top of that, 260 yards rushing and a touchdown.
00:36Whereas Matthew Stafford, 4-2, 71% completion, 1,544 yards, 14 touchdowns, six interceptions, negative 10 rushing yards.
00:48So if you're going to use the schedule as a reason Drake May shouldn't win the MVP, just look at the common opponents, six of them.
00:56It's not even like it was just two or three.
00:58Six is nearly half the season, or at least, what, a third of the season.
01:03And so you look at that, and then you look at just Drake May's passing stats in general.
01:09In terms of yards, yep, he's fourth behind Stafford, Goff, and Prescott.
01:13In terms of total touchdowns, so passing and rushing touchdowns, he's only, I believe now, seven or eight away from Stafford.
01:22They have an updated Stafford.
01:24May leads the league in passer rating.
01:25He has the highest QBR ever recorded in a single game, what he did against the Jets this weekend.
01:31And I understand it's the Jets, but, like, other teams play the Jets, too.
01:35Who cares about that?
01:35Like, it doesn't matter.
01:36It doesn't matter.
01:37It's just what the quarterback does and what he has done for this franchise.
01:40Last year, the Rams were a playoff football team.
01:43They were the only team to push the Eagles, who won the Super Bowl, running away to the brink.
01:48They were the only team to do that.
01:49And so the Rams were already a good football team.
01:53And then you look at the New Eagle Patriots, where a four-win team, and Drake May now has them competing for the number one seed in the AFC.
01:59Let it be said.
02:00Let it be done.
02:00Is there anything that can happen in Week 18 that will make this absolutely reversed, that Drake May will not win the MVP, and Matthew Stafford will win the MVP?
02:12I don't think so.
02:13Nothing.
02:13I don't think so.
02:14Four interceptions.
02:15Maybe.
02:15Yeah, sure.
02:16But I don't.
02:17Not playing.
02:18No, I think not playing locks it up for him.
02:21If you don't play it, don't play.
02:22Like, there's not a game to play.
02:23That's fine.
02:24Matthew Stafford would have to go nuclear, and I just don't see that happening, especially because the Rams are kind of locked in.
02:33Sean McVay told you last year he cares more about resting his guys than he does, like, seeding in the playoffs.
02:40And they're already a wildcard team.
02:41They can't win the division now.
02:43So at this point, it's like, all right, we rest our guys.
02:45Done.
02:45Yeah, we rest our guys.
02:46It's a done deal.
02:47All right.
02:48So the two things.
02:49Number one, I was looking at Boston athletes who have won MVPs.
02:54Yeah.
02:55Have you done this exercise?
02:56No, I haven't.
02:56Oh, okay.
02:58It's surprisingly thin in recent years.
03:02It would be.
03:02Can you name the last Boston athletes from the four major sports to win an MVP?
03:10Yeah, so it's Tom Brady for sure.
03:13That is incorrect.
03:15What?
03:15Tom Brady won an MVP in, like, 2019?
03:17I said of the four major sports.
03:21Yeah.
03:22Yeah.
03:22Okay, so there's – wait, so you're saying there's been four MVPs – how many MVPs did Tom Brady win?
03:30Is it two or three?
03:31Three.
03:32Three.
03:32When was the last one he won?
03:352018?
03:352018?
03:37False.
03:38When was it?
03:392016?
03:4017.
03:40Okay.
03:41I'm right around.
03:42Okay.
03:42Somebody has won an MVP since then.
03:45Hmm.
03:45Who's won an MVP in this city?
03:47Zach knows.
03:47He's like, oh, Zach's running through the glass.
03:50I assume it's a baseball player.
03:51Zach, I'll let you answer.
03:52Oh, is it?
03:53I'll let you answer only if you play a song leading up to it so we can all get jacked up for your answer.
03:58All right?
03:58Oh, was it the 2018 Red Sox?
04:01Wait.
04:04I want to hear it was Zach's song.
04:05Oh, okay.
04:06Sorry.
04:06My bad.
04:07What do you got, Zach?
04:08What do you got, Zach?
04:10Come on, Zach.
04:11You still trying to dial something up right there?
04:12You still trying to dial something up right there?
04:12You still trying to dial it up, Zach?
04:14Zach, wait.
04:15You should – all these songs we have, there's a purpose why we spent a half an hour soliciting these songs so we can have them ready to go.
04:24Yeah, see, there it is.
04:25Yeah.
04:262018 Mookie Betts.
04:28All right.
04:28There it is.
04:29That's a terrible song.
04:30The right answer, though.
04:31Was that what you were going to say?
04:32Yeah.
04:33All right, Mookie Betts.
04:33Yeah, but –
04:34So let's go back.
04:37Mookie Betts 2018.
04:39Last one.
04:40Last MVP in this town.
04:41Yep.
04:42Tom Brady, year before 2017.
04:46When was the last Bruins MVP?
04:48Ooh.
04:49You got to go back a ways, right?
04:51Oh, yeah.
04:52Yeah, you got to go back a ways.
04:53Are we talking like Bobby Orr?
04:55No, he actually wasn't the last one, but it was around that era.
04:58Ray Bork?
04:58No.
04:59No, Ray Bork never won.
05:01Oh, man.
05:02Yeah.
05:03So –
05:04Oh, yeah.
05:04I'm not going to get that.
05:04But this is my point, is that there's a reason why we should talk about this MVP with Drake
05:09Ney, because this doesn't come along every year.
05:13In fact, it hasn't come along since 2018.
05:16Yeah.
05:16And so you have Mookie in 2018.
05:19You have Brady in 2017.
05:22And then you have –
05:24Oh.
05:26I mean, you have Brady, obviously, his run.
05:29Brady won it.
05:30A Celtics player to win MVP.
05:31Brady won it – to get Brady out of the way, Brady 2007, Brady 2010, and Brady 2017.
05:39Okay?
05:40So they're actually – the next one is another Red Sox player.
05:46Interesting.
05:47Yeah.
05:47Well, thank you.
05:49Can we play more music while he's listening?
05:51No.
05:51I'm trying to think.
05:52I don't know who the next –
05:55Play like six season.
05:56It'll maybe inspire him.
05:57What year?
05:57Give me a year.
05:592008.
06:01Oh, who – oh, was it – was it David Ortiz?
06:04No.
06:05Who was – who's 2008?
06:06Man, what's wrong with you?
06:07Come on.
06:07I should have done Wasabi Challenge with this.
06:09Yeah, random baseball player is not my forte.
06:11You'd be shoving Wasabi down your gullet for about an hour.
06:13I know where guys went to college from football, not –
06:16Crank it up.
06:18This will help them.
06:20Halfway through the drive.
06:22This song is awesome.
06:23Yeah.
06:23See, this is what I'm talking about.
06:25When you're running, when you're training for a marathon, if you put six season and shallow on
06:29a loop, it's okay.
06:31It's all right.
06:34Right?
06:35Oh, I'm an idiot.
06:36Okay.
06:37It's Dustin Pedroia.
06:37Dustin Pedroia.
06:38Yeah, yeah.
06:38All right.
06:39So –
06:40I'm a moron.
06:412007, 2010, 2017 for Brady.
06:44Mookie Betts, the most recent, 2018.
06:47Dustin Pedroia, 2008.
06:50Then, huge drop-off.
06:52Yeah, it's probably what, like Larry Bird?
06:54Uh, nope.
06:58Nope.
06:59Another Red Sox player.
07:00Oh, God.
07:01Another Red Sox player?
07:03Yeah.
07:03You're not going to get this.
07:04Mo Vaughn, 1995.
07:06Okay.
07:07And then –
07:07There's three.
07:08And then, 1986, two Boston athletes won the MVPs.
07:17I'm waiting for you to tell me who they are, Rob.
07:19You're staring at me.
07:2086 is before I was born.
07:21Like, the whole idea is for the show –
07:23I'm sitting on the edge here.
07:24Zach, you're like –
07:24You're so proud of yourself, Mr. Benching 3.30.
07:29Um, I have no idea.
07:30Yeah, okay.
07:31So how can you say that the Rafael Devers trade is the worst trade in Red Sox history
07:35if you don't even know what happened before yesterday?
