13:38he said, It is John whom I beheaded
13:42who has been raised. For Herod himself had sent
13:46men arrested John and put him in prison on account of Herodias
13:50his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married
13:54him. John had repeatedly told Herod
13:58It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.
14:03So Herodias nursed a grudge against him
14:06and wanted to kill him. But she could not
14:09because Herod stood in awe of John and protected him
14:12as he knew that John was a righteous and holy man.
14:17When Herod heard him he was thoroughly baffled
14:20and yet he liked to listen to John.
14:25But a suitable day came when Herod gave a banquet
14:29on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders
14:32and leaders of Galilee.
14:36When his daughter Herodias came in and danced
14:39she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
14:42And so the king said to the girl
14:44Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you
14:47he swore to her.
14:49Whatever you will ask I will give you
14:52up to half of my kingdom.
14:56So she went out and asked her mother
14:58What should I ask for?
15:01Her mother said
15:02The head of John the baptiser.
15:07Immediately she hurried back to the king
15:08and made her request.
15:10I want the head of John the baptist
15:12on a platter. Immediately.
15:17Although it grieved the king deeply
15:19he did not want to reject her
15:20because of his oath and his guests.
15:25And so the king sent an executioner at once
15:27to bring John's head.
15:29And he went and beheaded John in prison.
15:33He brought his head on a platter
15:35and gave it to the girl.
15:36And the girl gave it to her mother.
15:39When John's disciples heard this
15:41he came and took his body
15:44and placed it in a tomb.
15:49This is the word of the Lord.
15:52Thanks be to God.
16:05This is interesting
16:07as a photograph of contemporary opinion.
16:16He said
16:19They said in some ancient authorities
16:21such as in me
16:23is to be understood impersonally of Herod
16:27or if the latter
16:29the very repetition of Herod's statement
16:31in Mark 6.16
16:33gives us fresh insight
16:35into the workings of Herod's mind.
16:40There is a variety of opinion in the world
16:43about Christ.
16:45Whenever he is heard of
16:47human thought is always exercised about him.
16:52The element of the extraordinary
16:54is always recognised as attaching
16:56to his personality and action.
16:59However great to be that variety
17:01yet often the truth lies outside of it.
17:07But Christ has to be accounted for.
17:11Very little was yet known about him in Galilee
17:15and yet the question as to who he was
17:18at once arose.
17:22The reason of this
17:24is that spiritual character of Christ
17:27is a challenge
17:27to the spiritual nature
17:29of man.
17:33Firstly it appeals to the spiritual hopes of men.
17:37Even with the most debased and degraded
17:40it is from the unseen
17:42that help and salvation
17:43are looked for.
17:46The common Jewish notion
17:48that Elijah should come again
17:49and the more general one
17:51that the prophets were not dead
17:52but reappeared at different times
17:54to repeat their messages
17:56were but phrases
17:58of the inextinguishable hope
17:59that characterises the popular mind
18:02in all pages.
18:05And they both start into life again
18:07at the appearance of Christ.
18:10It cannot be thought of
18:12by them
18:13but religiously
18:14or spiritually.
18:16The religious nature
18:17of his work
18:18is so pronounced.
18:20The thoughts of many hearts
18:22shall be revealed.
18:26Secondly conscience is addressed.
18:30It is the king
18:31who fancies
18:32he detects
18:32the ghostly association.
18:35The guilty past
18:36started up
18:37in all its horror.
18:39John's faithful teachings
18:41and lofty examples
18:42could never be forgotten.
18:45Was it the long slumbering
18:46national conscience
18:47of the Jews
18:48that identified Christ
18:50with the prophets
18:50whom their fathers
18:52had killed?
18:54It is the guilty conscience
18:55that fears him.
18:57The believer
18:58hails him
18:59with rapture
18:59and delight.
19:01So the son of man
19:03judges the secrets
19:04of all men
19:04through time
19:05and at the judgment day.
19:11Any but the highest
19:13estimates of Christ
19:14will prove
19:14unsatisfactory.
19:18Popular opinion
19:19was at variance
19:20within itself.
19:21It falls below
19:22the true dignity
19:23of Christ.
19:26There was of course
19:27an element of truth
19:28in their guesses.
19:30All true spiritual workers
19:31are represented
19:32by Christ
19:33and their work
19:34is identified
19:35in a greater
19:36or lesser degree
19:36with his.
19:39The kingdom of God
19:40is one in all
19:42its manifestations
19:43through all time.
19:45The higher personality
19:46in office of Christ
19:47is inclusive
19:48of all the lesser ones.
19:50He was a prophet
19:51and more.
19:55It was an inversion
19:56of the true order
19:57of reference
19:58which they perpetrated.
20:00The prophets
20:01were not dependents
20:02of Christ
20:04owing all their power
20:06and illumination
20:07to his indwelling spirit.
20:11But this error
20:12was due to the moral causes.
20:14As their fathers
20:14received the prophet's message
20:16instead of killing him
20:18the generation
20:19of Christ's day
20:20might better have
20:21understood his gospel.
20:24The layers of heredity
20:25in traditional
20:26mental attitude
20:27had so much to do
20:28with their blunders
20:29but most of all
20:31their own rejection
20:32of John
20:33or the supine allowance
20:35of his death.
20:38It seemed
20:39as if the spiritual
20:40consciousness
20:41of the Jews
20:41was condemned
20:42to stationeryness
20:44at the very point
20:45of the divine revelation
20:46where John
20:47had failed
20:48to reform.
20:50And so all men's
20:52lack of faith
20:52and their unworthy
20:53conceptions of Christ
20:55have a moral root
20:56also.
20:58It is only
20:59as Christ himself
21:00by his spirit
21:02and his teaching
21:03enables us
21:04that we can truly say
21:06our Lord
21:07and our God.
21:11There is a strange
21:13thing by human nature
21:14in his own town
21:16Jesus was rejected
21:17because the people
21:18are all too aware
21:19of his humble
21:20and ordinary origin.
21:23Little did they know
21:24the truth
21:24of course.
21:27Elsewhere
21:27people had seen
21:28no such reservation
21:29and they were prepared
21:30to see in Jesus
21:31anything they fancied
21:32except the truth.
21:36Hence we read
21:37that they thought
21:37that he was Elijah
21:38brought back to earth
21:39or another great prophet
21:41raised up in his life.
21:44Herod we learn
21:45thought the unthinkable
21:46that John the Baptist
21:48had come back to life.
21:51It is interesting
21:52that those in authority
21:53were able to contemplate
21:54resurrection
21:56unless it applied
21:57to Jesus himself
21:58in which case
21:59it was absolutely
22:00impossible.
22:03however
22:04it did not seem
22:05to matter
22:06how tormented
22:07Herod was going to be
22:08by the
22:09resurrected
22:10John the Baptist.
22:12He would still
22:13resolve to have
22:14another go
22:14and put him to death
22:16again.

22:22But Herod
22:22was hardly
22:23a shining example
22:24of a man.
22:25In fact
22:26he comes across
22:27as the very epitome
22:28of corruption
22:29in the ruler.
22:31Here we seek
22:32him making
22:33a stupid promise
22:34as a result
22:35of drooling
22:36over a seductive
22:37dance
22:39resulting in
22:39the execution
22:40of John
22:41something that
22:42he had resisted
22:43up to the point
22:44because even
22:45he knew
22:46that this would
22:46be something wrong.
22:51perhaps this is
22:52a good example
22:53of where temptation
22:53and the worldly
22:54lifestyle can be.
22:57I am sure
22:58that we can all
22:59think of instances
23:00in our own lives
23:01when we have
23:02suffered a
23:03Herodian moment
23:04shall we say
23:07when we have
23:07done something
23:08at a time
23:08when our judgment
23:09had been clouded
23:10by drink
23:12or desire
23:13to be regretted
23:15afterwards.
23:19At all times
23:20it is necessary
23:21for us to be
23:21on our guard
23:22as these things
23:23creep up
23:24upon us.
23:27I do not
23:28suppose for a moment
23:29that Herod set out
23:30that day
23:30in order to
23:31execute
23:33John.
23:35but as they say
23:36one thing
23:37leads to another
23:38and this time
23:39the consequences
23:40were not good.
23:43We do not
23:44set out in the
23:45morning to have
23:45too much to drink
23:46the following evening
23:48to end up
23:49in disaster
23:50in the gambling
23:51den
23:51a police cell
23:53or a stranger's
23:54bedroom.
23:58Interestingly
23:58and also
23:59as a further
24:00warning to us
24:00consider the
24:02relationship
24:02between Herod
24:03and John
24:03the Baptist
24:04for a final
24:04moment.
24:06We are told
24:07that Herod
24:08was fascinated
24:09by John.
24:10He wanted
24:10to hear
24:11what he said
24:11and also
24:12protected him
24:13but in a
24:14half-hearted
24:15sort of way.
24:17However
24:18regardless
24:18of how interested
24:19he might have
24:20been
24:21in what John
24:22had to say
24:23Herod
24:24never quite
24:24managed
24:25to make
24:25the connection
24:26and seek
24:26repentance
24:27and baptism
24:28for himself.
24:31There is
24:31a huge
24:32gulf
24:32between
24:33theological
24:34interest
24:36and true
24:37faith
24:37coupled
24:38with the
24:39deep
24:39love of
24:40Christ
24:40in your
24:41heart
24:41and we
24:43would do
24:43well to
24:43remember
24:44this.
24:49let us pray
24:53O God
24:54the protector
24:54of all
24:55that trust
24:55in you
24:56without whom
24:57nothing is
24:58strong
24:58nothing is
24:59holy
25:01increase
25:01and multiply
25:02upon us
25:03your mercy
