00:01Uncas Pavilion, super middleweight
00:04hotshot Jeff Lacey takes on Tony
00:06Pope and Lacey's third professional
00:09fight.
00:12Thirty six year old unheralded
00:15Tony Pope 14 and seven eleven
00:17knockouts has fought a couple of
00:18contenders got a late start turn
00:20pro at twenty nine started at
00:22seven and oh with six chaos that
00:23lost his next to one five straight
00:25but two and five cents including
00:27four straight losses he's been
00:29stopped five times in three
00:30rounds or less interestingly he's
00:32thirteen and one with ten knockouts
00:34in his native Virginia one and six
00:36on the road Bobby Pope told us he
00:39intends to match power with power
00:41could that be a grave mistake
00:43against Lacey matching power with
00:44power is okay as long as you also
00:46have some good power and a pretty
00:48good chin because you're going to
00:48get hit but he's been knocked out
00:50five times already which lets us
00:51know his chin is not great and
00:52unfortunately at this level at this
00:53early of a career very difficult to
00:56find quality competition quality
00:58opposition that is not too much too
01:00soon and when Lacey hits people
01:02it's not just an ordinary bang it's
01:04a super punch he is a bruiser and
01:09we are ready for the entrance of
01:11the pitchers.
01:11Jeff Lacey.
01:18Jeff Lacey.
01:24Jeff Lacey.
01:26Jeff Lacey.
01:35Jeff Lacey.
01:43Jeff Lacey looks like he's been doing this for years 2000 US Olympian who made it to the
01:48quarterfinals at Sydney impressive amateur credentials 209 and 12 including the Nationals
01:54nicknamed Minnie Holyfield at the summer game so powerfully built off to a terrific start as a pro
02:01couple of first round knockouts what what do you like about this young fighter Bobby and what type
02:07of opponent will bring out the best of him Steve I personally love the fact that he comes to fight
02:11not not have any nonsense involved and that can punch with both hands he's also humble he takes
02:16his time he's got a lot of patience and this is a guy who again people are gonna start falling
02:21in
02:21front of him very soon he's gonna need to step up to the next level and get fighters that are
02:25more
02:25durable to test his heart test his chin test his desire and will to win and wearing the the Jersey
02:32of Tampa Bay quarterback Sean King they both grew up together in St. Petersburg Florida let's check
02:39the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape major disparity in age Lacey 12 years younger Lacey
02:45turned
02:4524 a week ago hide almost the same identical reach at yesterday's way and Lacey right on the button Pope
02:51just under and the key rules for this super middleweight bout scheduled for six the standing eight count in
02:57effect same for the three knockdown rule but it cannot be saved by the Bell in any round if an
03:02accidental headline occurred before the end of the third round it's a technical draw if it happens
03:07after the end around three they go to the scorecard so here at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville Connecticut getting
03:12ready for Jeff Lacey versus Tony Pope the introductions from our ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr well fans at

04:26ladies and gentlemen introducing tough Tony Pope
04:34and his opponent across the ring he is on my right fighting out of the red corner wearing white trunks
04:40with red trim
04:41finding out of St. Petersburg Florida he weighed in at 168 pounds his record
04:48as a professional two wins no losses two wins coming by way of knockout ladies and gentlemen please welcome a
04:55proud member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team
05:00introducing the undefeated Jeff left hook Lacey
05:09and once again it's Richard Flaherty a referee in charge now to give instructions six rounds of boxing schedule
05:15okay Tony Jeff okay gentlemen we went over the instructions in the dressing room
05:22we expect a good clean professional fight three six rounds okay touch him up come up boxing at the bell
05:28good luck
05:30Lacey blowing people out of the first round
05:33lots of pop in both hands nice jab left hook pretty good right primarily goes for the the power shots
05:40and while Pope has struggled
05:41he is a hard worker but definitely lacks a polish and experience against big time quality opposition
05:50here we go round one
05:54scheduled for six super middleweights
05:58Lacey though the funny thing is he was not known as a blazing fast starter before
06:02he got to the professional ranks but he's got two first round knockouts
06:05well he's a great puncher and you don't even have to start that fast he throws three punches
06:10and two of them land sometimes people are already sleeping he is a great puncher speaking of
06:15sleeping he may be the sleeper from the olympic class of 2000 certainly has the pro body the chiseled physique
06:21power in both hands speed and he has good temperament too he's not in a hurry
06:27likes to take his time and with that kind of power in a long fight he's always a dangerous man
06:33and in his pro debut he scored a first round knockout off a body punch a hard left hook
06:39both wearing the white trunks but jeff lacy with the the red
06:46uh over the right knee and it says lacy on the front of his trunks
06:53and he's wearing the red shoes
06:56pope showing a decent jab he's doing it one at a time he needs a step with it and he's
07:00constantly
07:00on the retreat he's not going to hurt lacy while he's going back lacy so composed like an old pro
07:07a
07:07seasoned veteran it's hard to believe it's only his third pro fight he says he goes and looks to test
07:14every opponent in the first round but he's been working on coming off the jab more being more relaxed
07:19and everything else will just fall into place having well over 200 amateur fights makes him
07:26makes him turn pro as anthony pope lands on lap makes him turn pro with experience that most fighters
07:33don't have we had to save tony pope from falling to the concrete floor beneath us
07:39you know he wound up right on top of my telestrator with literally knocked it over
07:47you're still showing good defense as jeff lacy pours it on i'll tell you what too he got hit one
07:52good
07:52clean left hook right under the chin and didn't go down from it but his body is getting ruined
07:56oh a bruising attack by lacy to the body of pope five six seven eight you see it gets up
08:07at seven
08:09lacy looking for his third straight first round knockout there's a bad cut over the right eye
08:17i'm gonna end it right here bobby the ringside doctor looking at that nasty cut
08:24and lacy has done it again
08:31so jeff lacy three at all with three first round knockouts
08:40as they attend to tony pope give me a seat i got it tony
08:45yep i got it they apply pressure to the cut
08:52and the very fresh jeff lacy just rolls on
09:02baby gmo baby gmo
09:05baby gary too
09:08same peter in the house
09:10very affable engaging jeff lacy saying hello to folks back home you're a real likeable guy
09:17some of you want to see women
09:20we just got a whole left in and they continue to administer to tony pope a very bad gash
09:27all right all right
09:30as if a knife was taken to the face come back out and be calm and just smashing we'll watch
09:36where
09:36he goes through the ropes
09:43take a look here no he just he he slips through the ropes on his own and almost lands on
09:48steve and
09:49myself the punch did not push him through the ropes he bent down to get out the way of a
09:53punch and
09:54it slipped right through you watch it again
10:00here comes the right hand to the side i think this is where they stopped the fight this is the
10:04left hook that might have opened that cut
10:07well you can see it gushing out right there
10:11for a second okay
10:14lacy has pope in the corner and he's banging the body around the right you see it to the side
10:19but
10:19that left hook and the one right before it both landed squarely in his face and you can
10:24see the blood squirting out very readily it looked like he got cut by a knife
10:28unbelievable it was a deep cut a very very clean cut so another first round knockout here tonight
10:34first bojato and now lacy let's get it up to jimmy lennon jr
10:41ladies and gentlemen we have the time of two minutes 27 seconds in round number one
10:46our referee in charge richard flaherty stops the contest upon advice of the ringside position
10:52the opponent unable to continue due to the severity of a cut therefore the winner by way of technical
10:59knockout perfect record now at three and oh with three knockouts jeff left hook lacy
11:11well jeff lacy living and punching proof that you don't need a gold medal to have a golden future
11:16you know tommy parks used to tell me listen you go out there in the first round do whatever you
11:20got to do
11:20come back in the second round i'll tell you how to win lazy hasn't gone back for a second round
11:25and he keeps saying hey i need more rounds but he keeps knocking guys out in the first round
11:32coming up next it'll be our main event former world champion charles the hatchet brewer squares
11:38off with antoine eccles for the vacant north american boxing association super middleweight
11:44championship that's a fringe title let's take you into the dressing rooms of both brewer and eccles
11:49both promise an explosive fight brewer seven losses in 43 bounce but a former ibf super middleweight
11:55champ hoping a win over antoine eccles serves as a springboard to another world title fight same for
12:00the 24 four and one eccles off a war with bernard hopkins about six months ago eccles said he doesn't
12:06think brewer is a dirty fighter like hopkins it's a pivotal fight for these two personally
12:11our featured attraction later tonight speaking of the hatchet it looked like a hatchet was taken to
12:19the face of tony pope let's go up to tim smith and you know steve that was from a punch
12:25it was so
12:26powerful i talked to the ring doctor and he said it was a punch it wasn't a headbutt it was
12:30a punch and
12:31this guy had some power you're turning into a knockout artist i know you don't like to work overtime
12:36obviously right well you know i want to go ahead and get it get my get my money's worth and
12:40as quick
12:40as i can so i guess if it takes a knockout or six rounds i'm gonna take it now you
12:45haven't gotten in
12:46any rounds in your career are you concerned that you're not getting a lot of work in the ring but
12:51you're getting a lot of work in the gym can you gain experience from just knocking gals out in the
12:55first
12:55round well um you can gain a little bit of experience you can see i i stay back i don't
13:01go
13:01for the kill it just comes when i see it um by me being in shape i mean if i
13:06get the rounds or not
13:06i know i'm scheduled to go six rounds at the bio at the bottom schedule okay now let's take a
13:11look
13:12at some replays here this is the first uh punch where you knock him through the ropes can you sort
13:18of describe what's going on here i was coming in to the body i wanted i want to have a
13:22body attack
13:23as long as well as a head shot and i came back to the head with like a hook jab
13:26and he went in
13:27between the ropes now did you think that was a knockdown i didn't i didn't think it was a legitimate
13:32knockdown i hit him he went back it's a knockdown but i didn't think it was enough to put him
13:36down
13:36now this was a legitimate knockdown yeah right here i'm going to him he's trying to protect himself
13:43and i'm trying not to hit him on the top of the head because my coach is saying don't hit
13:46the right
13:46hand on the head so i'm trying to hit the body to open up the head and when i caught
13:50him i uh when i with
13:52the left hook against the ropes that's when he went down okay now you want to be more active
13:56when's your next fight uh june uh 23rd right here at mohican sun on showtime number one network all
14:03right showing a lot of power not putting in a lot of rounds but still getting his paycheck
14:09thanks steve all right tim well lacy said something interesting to us yesterday that someday he'd like to
14:15go down and wait to 160 then come back up again and perhaps get a shot at his dream opponent
14:21roy jones
14:22jr so even at this embryonic stage of his career lacy already thinking big he knows where the money is
14:29and these guys really are coming of age the the olympians take a look at their records jeff lacy now
14:38three and oh with three first round knockouts panchito bajada with a blowout here earlier five
14:42and oh with five ko's three in the first and the olympic silver medalist earlier rocky juarez made it
14:49three for three with two knockouts pretty impressive stuff so impressive there's almost nothing to
14:54comment on they did everything they had to do they didn't go overboard they weren't in a hurry
14:58execution perfect all right so tonight our triple header coverage coming to you from the uncus
15:04pavilion here at mohegan sun in uncusville connecticut let's get it back up to tim smith with a special
15:11guest thanks steve and he is special he doesn't really need much of an introduction because he's
15:16all over the place but this is zapp judah brooklyn's own 144 pound 140 pound ibf champion zapp judah
15:25now zapp what do you think of the olympians tonight and what the display that they put on i mean
15:31these
15:31you got a crop of young good fighters right now you know these dudes are doing real good i mean
15:35they come in they shining they breaking dudes up they like a young zap judah up in there you know
15:39what i'm saying i'm giving you guys a lot of respect right now now they're not getting a lot of
15:43work in
15:44is it important at this stage that perhaps they get some more work and get some more experience or can
15:50they survive and and learn things off of knocking people out in the first second round well i'm right
15:56now you know off the um they only like four and no two and no three no so right now
15:59the the quick
16:00early early knockouts is beautiful you know what i'm saying just rack them up rack the then
16:04fights up get the get this experience and move on to the next day now your older brother daniel
16:09was on the card tonight i saw you out there jumping up a couple of times let's take a look
16:13at uh what
16:13he did and sort of describe what you see here and what you think of your brother right now he
16:17put
16:17together he's putting together good combinations and um you know oh i don't know he went down for
16:23football soccer just now but um you know these looking real good he's working real hard in the
16:27gym and um he's putting these together and um there you go the denny boy in the house all right
16:31taking
16:32over you hear me judas are taking over your proud brother now you should have been fighting costa zoo
16:38tonight in this very ring and it hasn't happened yet what's going on with you and costa zoo is it

16:45warden is it costa zoo that just doesn't want to get in the ring i mean i don't know man
16:49i mean look
16:49the whole costa zoo zap judy thing is it's crazy right now but you know me i'm patient my whole
16:54life i had guys run for me i had guys duck me and so so forth you know what i'm
16:58saying so it's nothing
16:59it's nothing it's nothing new to me you know what i mean but i'm just working hard and looking i'm
17:02forward to june 23rd where i'm alan vesta and taking him out that's it and then whatever come forth
17:07next i just leave us in the most high hands now what do you know about vest i mean i
17:10know he's a boxer
17:11he's undefeated so he don't know how to lose so i got i got the coming in and showing this
17:15brooklyn
17:16boy don't play okay so eventually you will get costa zoo in the ring well with the will of god
17:21and maybe
17:22somebody out there who could track him down go get him and bring him let's sign his contract up let's
17:26do it you know okay costa zoo wants to zap judah wants costa zoo in the old west out 10
17:35paces and a gun
