Transcript
00:13Welcome to the Uncas Pavilion on the grounds of one of the largest casino destinations in the
00:18world, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. A busy night of boxing on tap that includes a
00:24former world champion and a host of undefeated blue chip prospects, most of whom competed at the
00:312000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In our main event, former IBF super middleweight champion
00:38and number four contender Charles Brewer meets USBA middleweight champ Antoine Echols who moves
00:44up in weight to fight for the vacant NABA 168-pound title. Also tonight, hard-hitting 2000 Olympian
00:52Jeff Lacey continues his burgeoning professional career as he takes on Tony Pope. In addition,
01:00you'll see 18-year-old rising star Francisco Panchito Bajaro, the youngest member of the 2000
01:05Mexican Olympic team versus Ernesto Fuente. And as a special bonus, we'll have highlights of
01:11other bouts with even more of the new breed, including Olympic silver medalists.
01:20Today's champions combined with the stars of tomorrow. That's the theme as we make our way
01:25indoors to the climate-controlled Uncas Pavilion here at Mohegan Sun. We close in on a big boxing
01:31triple header plus four featuring some of the most promising fighters of the future.
01:36We'll see you next time.
01:39Hello again, everybody. Steve Albert ringside from Uncasville, Connecticut.
01:43Well, in boxing, there are world champions and there's everyone else. Right now, Charles Brewer,
01:48who's a former 168-pound titleist, and Antoine Echols, who has twice challenged for the world
01:52middleweight crown, are included with everyone else. Later tonight, one of these super middleweights
01:58is likely to take a giant step toward changing that status. With Joe Calzaghe heading an uninspiring
02:04collection of champions at this weight, Brewer and Echols are certainly good enough to win one of
02:08the belts. But since there are not media darlings or dynamic, charismatic personalities, tonight's
02:14winner will earn a title, making a firm statement with his fists. And with that, let me bring on my
02:20ringside partner, former world champion Bobby Chez. And Bobby, are you expecting Brewer versus Echols to be
02:25an intense street fight, not only because of their styles, but because there's so much at
02:30stake here? Well, Steve, there is an absolute ton at stake for both fighters. The end of the road
02:34could be near for either of the fighters should they lose tonight. I expect them to bring their best,
02:37but styles make fights, not just what they bring to the table. Brewer loves to punch, but he's more
02:42methodical and also conserves his energy, picks his spots. Echols on the other case, he throws over
02:47100 punches around many times, swarms his opponents coming forward. When those two get together and those two
02:52styles clash, I think a fight, a street fight has to break out within the first three rounds for sure.
02:57Well, both
03:02but earlier this evening, some fresh new faces continued their young pro careers. Let's begin
03:07with highlights involving heavyweight prospect Malik Scott.
03:12At alternate on the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, Scott
03:16sent Robert Anderson rumbling to the canvas in round two.
03:21Tall, sharp, and when he gains a little weight, the heavyweight division has a new contender.
03:254-0 with three knockouts now. 17-year-old Juan Diaz, three months too young to go to the Olympics,
03:30made quick work of Carlos Navarez late round one with a vicious left-right combination.
03:35This kid could actually have a world title by the time he's 18, not even old enough to drink.
03:399-0 with six knockouts now for Diaz. And
03:43Olympic silver medalist Rocky Juarez stopped Eddie Woodruff halfway through the four.
03:48He systematically broke his man down to the head and body with pure professional perfection.
03:53Rocky Juarez improved to 3-0 with two knockouts.
04:00Terrific action here in the early going. Bobby, you have some parting thoughts on these youngsters?
04:04Well, Steve, these youngsters have come into the pros with a wealth of talent
04:07and wealth of experience in the amateurs. It is not inconceivable that in their respective divisions,
04:12all of them go on to fight for world championships very early in their professional careers.
04:16And in just a little while, we'll look live at two other hot prospects from the 2000 Summer Games,
04:21Panchito Bahato and Jeff Lacey. As usual, we invite Showtime subscribers with internet access to score
04:27tonight's bouts online in the boxing area at show.com. Your vote will instantly update the webpage and the

04:55This stunning fifth round knockout of now former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis before
05:00Rachman steps in
05:54I think it was very positive for Lennox Lewis
06:08Here
06:10Here
06:12Here
06:26Here
06:28Here
06:28What?
06:30What?
06:32What?
06:34Who is it?
06:36Sven.
06:38No.
06:40Oh.
06:42You're out of the way.
06:46You're out of the way.
06:48I wanna say from my home.
06:49I wanna say I don't know what the hell to do.
06:52I wanna say I don't know what your life is.
07:02Oh
07:56best thing from mexico since julio cesar chavez perhaps a bit premature
08:08it is one of the top young guns out of mexico started out nine one and one but unsuccessful
08:14his last two off a disappointing third round bobby now 21 he may have more professional experience
08:21than bojado but that you know steve experience in and of itself is not enough of a factor to matter
08:28you're comparing the talent levels here bojado is an exceptional talent who's had a wealth of
08:33has beaten many many amateurs at world championship levels who will probably beat
08:38the young pros that fuentes has faced so talent a factor experience not a factor in this case
08:44and his opponent francisco panchito bojado ready to enter as the music starts
09:21foreign in mexico grew up in east l.a same high school as oscar de la joa
09:26boy this kid's on a fast track third bout in four weeks returning to the scene of his pro debut
09:31at
09:3217 made it to the second round of the 2000 olympics representing mexico only to lose
09:37a close dispute decision to a russian opponent 168 amateur wins he's bought a grand total in the
09:45pros of eight minutes and 16 seconds in his four wins all by knockout he's the natural the babyface
09:52assassin very mature and focused for his age bob he seems to be wise beyond his years in the ring
09:57steve his wealth of experience in the amateurs especially at world-class competition level has
10:02given him extra confidence and not just the confidence but that maturity or appearance appearance
10:07of it at such an early age he looks like he's much older so bojado is ready to face fuentes
10:14let's
10:15check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape bojado born during the reagan administration
10:20turned 18 eight days ago the height nearly even same goes for the reach at yesterday's weigh-in bojado
10:25135 when he's 132 and the key rules for this lightweight bout scheduled for six
10:31six the standing eight count is in effect no uh the three knockdown rule as well a fighter cannot
10:36be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the third round
10:41the fighters ruled a technical draw if it happens after the end of round three they go to the score
10:46cards so here in the uncus pavilion at mohingan sun getting ready for francisco panchito bojado

12:31introducing ernesto fuentes
12:40and his opponent across the ring on my right fighting out of the red corner this six-round
12:45attraction he is wearing green trunks and hails from guadalajara jalisco mexico he weighed in at the
12:53lightweight limit of 135 pounds even he was the youngest member of mexico's 2000 olympic team as a
13:02professional his record stands at a perfect four wins no losses all four wins coming by way of knockout
13:10ladies and gentlemen they call him the baby face assassin introducing francisco panchito bojado
13:23and once again a referee in charge james santa now to give instructions six rounds of boxing schedule
13:36good evening gentlemen we spend considerable time in the locker room talking about the rules
13:40i want you to listen to me at all times when i tell you to stop punching i want you
13:43to stop punching
13:44let's touch gloves and have a good fight let's go good luck okay everybody out
13:56what's going to do it let's go get the wire out guys go get the wire out guys bass pick
13:58the
13:58board and get the weather out and get the wire out guys get the wire out guys probably because his
14:00style is more suited for the pros and when fuentes went pro four years ago at 17 same age bojato
14:07was
14:07when he turned pro was considered a strong kid with quick hands and one punch knockout power but
14:12his defense and footwork a different story how about seven-year-old Angel
14:19Bahado who was doing a little shadow boxing in front of his older brother
14:24Francisco Panchito Bahado cute kid who also wants to get into the ring someday
14:29and that is very obvious Steve that's the best age to start him at my brother
14:34Tony was seven my brother Vince was nine I was ten so by the time we're
14:37teenagers we have half a decade or more experience start of young Bahado quick
14:44hands terrific combination of speed and power goes to the head and body great
14:48instincts takes his time picks his spots very good combination puncher doesn't
14:54waste a lot of movement Fuentes was pretty intelligent in the interviews he said he
14:58couldn't match speed with Bojado but he wanted to try and make Bojado attack him
15:02chase him and time him on the way in that was the best way to maybe frustrate
15:06well I don't because he's so young
15:14first five point days and he left himself open in the counter left hook just one
15:18shot me down this point
15:23let's see how point is reacts and how bojado reacts now
15:35and I'll tell you what point is just throwing an awfully nice left hook as well but he's not
15:39getting there first well how I was landing first because of the speed 20s wisely hangs on
15:52and he's got a ways to go when he's a minute 20 when this is throwing a nice right uppercut
15:58and a nice
15:58left hook there but again he's pulling it a little too wide and he's a little bit slower so that
16:02split
16:03he's got second difference well how I was landing first when you land first you land best
16:06you land best the incredibly impressive panchito bojado and the green trucks just 18 years of age having his
16:17opponent what he's in trouble early in the opening minute but when he's hanging on
16:30and he's getting hit close but he's not really wobbling too much
16:38oh another big left hook by bojado to the head when he's down for the second time
16:44six and I'm very unsteady lives he's in much more trouble this time Steve that I can assure you
16:50I'm watching he's got 22 seconds to survive another left hook and that's it that is it referee Jimmy
16:59Santa stops it in the first round and Francisco Machido bojado marches on
17:19a little bigger take a look take a look a great night thus far for the olympians
17:29bojado's third fight in 30 days you know he showed that we talked about that confidence and
17:35that poise and maturity he didn't hurt himself too much he took his time he worked in behind the jab
17:39he countered excellently and he worked very sharp very clean you notice he keeps his hands high he
17:45works his way in doesn't get wild doesn't get excited a lot of things young fighters especially
17:49a tender teenager did not know how to do so well so bojado ups his record bobby to five and
17:55all with
17:56five knockouts it's a first round knockout now that is his third thus far he has yet to go past
18:04three
18:04you watch the first knockdown you watch fuentes throw a left hook to the body there's one he comes
18:09up on the body dead to the head but again too slow and he slips that left hook in between
18:13the two
18:14does bojado and fuentes finds himself on the floor
18:19after taking a turn of punches second knockdown is just one simple clean left hook you'll see it
18:24coming right here comes up he's leaning catch him leaning back right on the chin to the seat of his
18:30pants goes fuentes and the referee said after the second knockdown to fuentes i'm watching you very
18:37very close and as soon as he got wobbled there referee seen enough
18:45here's another look from overhead he's gonna step in and as he leans back he gets caught right on the
18:51the chin and point they taste some cameras
18:56bojado continues his impressive start being brought along carefully but briskly by his managerial team
19:04headed up by shelley finkle he is used to fighting very frequently let's get the official word from jimmy
19:10lennon jr
19:13ladies and gentlemen we have the time of two minutes 41 seconds and round number one a referee in charge
19:21james
19:22santa stops the contest improving his record to five and oh with five knockouts the baby face assassin
19:30francisco panchito bojado
19:37just turned 18 and to borrow the showtime slogan no limits still very early but the poise patience
19:44power and speed of bojado make him a young prospect to watch very closely
19:52coming up next 2000 u.s olympian jeff lacy is back on display as he faces an opponent
19:59named tony pope let's take you into the dressing room of power punching jeff lacy regarded as the
20:05hardest hitter from the 2000 u.s olympic team never made it out of the second round some of the
20:11opinion
20:11lack of international experience also had more of a pro style of the amateurs very aggressive
20:16lots of punches always coming forward looking for the power shot particularly with the left hook
20:22tonight lacy looks to make it 3-0 as a pro off a pair of first round knockouts
20:29we're set for post bot reaction from our opening bot let's go to tim smith tim
20:35well steve this guy is bringing new meaning to the word rolling blackouts because he just keeps
20:42knocking people out now panchito congratulations on your win tonight and this guy said fuentes said
20:48that he wanted to be patient he wanted to frustrate you you didn't give him the opportunity what did you
20:52see this guy was good he i get him i gotta give him credit he did i was i had
20:57to get some natural
20:58punches out i was a little i had to get a little bit more relaxed uh i tried to take
21:03my time but he
21:04has a little bit of an awkward style i didn't really know much about him so i just came out
21:09try to work
21:09my jab out try to get the punches out now do you need to get to a point where the
21:14level of competition
21:15gets a little bit tougher so you can actually get some work in in the ring as opposed to getting
21:20a lot of
21:20work in the gym so you can get a little bit of bit of experience well right now basically uh
21:24the
21:25competition is it is getting it is getting a little tougher right now this guy wasn't a bad guy um
21:32we're barely starting hopefully by the end of this year we'll have 12 fights maybe more okay now let's
21:38take a look at the uh first knockdown we got a replay going here and i want you to describe
21:42what's
21:42going on okay right there i'm just waiting to see an opening i'm throwing my jab right there to the
21:48body to the body caught me a little bit off guard but i came back with with a hook while
21:52coming up
21:53okay here comes the second knockdown just sort of walk us through what's happening here
21:58right i'm just trying to get the other punch out he hit me a little below the bow but i
22:02was all right
22:02and i just try to get him again with my left hook
22:07now you're want to stay busy you're a very active fighter when is your next fight
22:11well it's gonna be my next fight's gonna be in june 20 june june 23rd and we're gonna be back
22:16right
22:16here in mohiggins with show time okay so you like that and we got little angel here little angel
22:22wants to be the uh next fighting bajado and steve i understand he's one of the toughest kids
22:29in his uh first grade class tim i hear he's the only kid in school with his own cut man
22:37absolutely so this guy is uh on his way to being a brilliant young prospect steve all right
22:43well i tell you we may see him performing pretty soon in the ring well at the rate
22:47his older brother ponchito is going he may have 19 wins before his 19th birthday bobby when is it the
22:55right time to step up the opposition and increase the rounds for these youngsters you know what there
23:00comes a point in time when you're in your early in your career you're going to look to see what
23:03a
23:03fighter can do eventually want to see what he can do on the pressure you're going to start to move
23:06to the next level and by that i mean the next level are fighters that can punch back a little
23:11harder
23:12they have slicker defense are harder to hit maybe better condition and also more durable could take
23:17better shots so a whole mix of things gets tested your heart your endurance and your chin back after
23:23you've done your job so that's where he needs to go now start moving up that next level and bring
23:27it up
23:27a little at a time till he finds some top 20 contenders well it's too early to tell for sure
23:32but maybe
23:32maybe just maybe ponchito bajado is headed toward joining the lengthy list of world champions from
23:39mexico again here you watch when this throws a decent left hook right there tries to go to the body
23:46for a
23:47double left hook and gets caught right in the middle of the double left hook with a left hook by
23:52bottom
23:57and here bojado catch him leaning watch when fuente's lease he's leaning back he'll come leaning over to
24:02the side and now he's going back and this pushes him all the way back to the seat of his
24:06pants
24:10from the overhead camera we can take a look at another left hook that he's caught right there that
24:14wobbles his feet and the referee's looking in his eyes directly has seen enough and i heard him when
24:19the second knockdown happens say i'm going to be watching close now you're hurt and he was watching
24:25very close and coming up next from the uncus pavilion super middleweight hot shot jeff lacy takes on
24:33tony pope in lacy's third professional fight
24:4036 year old unheralded tony pope 14 and 7 11 knockouts has fought a couple of contenders
