00:00:00Featuring former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, Michael Spinks.
00:00:06All right, welcome back.
00:00:08Now we're live at ringside in San Francisco and getting ready for the main event of the evening
00:00:11in which we'll see Floyd Mayweather Jr. defending the 130-pound crown
00:00:15against Jesus Chavez, who now lives in Austin, Texas, born in Mexico,
00:00:20brought to Chicago at age 5.
00:00:22Larry Merchant, as we pointed out briefly earlier in the telecast,
00:00:25is Chavez has had to battle through a long legal process to clear his name
00:00:30from an old armed robbery conviction,
00:00:32a near three years of what amounted to political exile in Mexico
00:00:36and some boxing politics to finally get into position to get this title fight.
00:00:41It's a victory for him just to be here.
00:00:44Is that his only victory of the night?
00:00:46That's the conventional wisdom.
00:00:48But conventional wisdom has battered, bruised, and bleeding this year.
00:00:53Just ask Lennox Lewis, who we just saw.
00:00:57Just ask Felix Trinidad.
00:00:59Just ask Prince Ahmed.
00:01:01Just ask Zab Judah.
00:01:03All solid favorites, not only beaten, but beaten up.
00:01:08Chavez is a serious challenger.
00:01:12He's earned this right.
00:01:14He's a smart, tough fighter.
00:01:16And now he's trying to give conventional wisdom
00:01:20maybe a bloody nose and a black eye this time.
00:01:24Conventional wisdom has gotten a lot of bloody noses and black eyes
00:01:26in this year of the upset in boxing.
00:01:28But it would be a huge upset, even despite all of Chavez's credentials,
00:01:32if he could beat Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:01:34Because George Floyd, born to the ring,
00:01:37is one of the most naturally skilled fighters in the sport.
00:01:40As we take a look at the fighting style he's exhibited in the past,
00:01:44you can see that he has fast, flashy feet, great hand speed, deceptive power.
00:01:49In fact, if there's an Achilles heel,
00:01:51it showed up in his last championship fight against Carlos Hernandez
00:01:55in his hometown of Grand Rapids,
00:01:57where, as you can see, he was slapping in the late rounds
00:01:59and actually went down at one point
00:02:01because of difficulties with both hands.
00:02:04He thought they were broken.
00:02:06They were not broken.
00:02:07They were just deeply bruised.
00:02:09It isn't the first time he's had trouble with his hands.
00:02:11If, in fact, this is going to bedevil him for the rest of his career,
00:02:15how might it affect his fighting style?
00:02:18It's going to have a great effect on his fighting style
00:02:20because without good hands, you can't hurt anyone.
00:02:23You can't kick them in this business.
00:02:24He's going to need his hands.
00:02:25And let me tell you,
00:02:26when he's fighting these opponents who are shorter than he is
00:02:29and who fight lower,
00:02:31that's where he's going to get all the pain.
00:02:32The pain is going to come.
00:02:33He can't avoid that.
00:02:34So take a look at the fighting style of Jesus Chavez
00:02:37and you'll see what George is talking about
00:02:38because Chavez is a committed body puncher
00:02:41and, like many body punchers,
00:02:43he tends to come in low.
00:02:44And often the target there for the opponent
00:02:47is the top of his head
00:02:48and that's the way Floyd could hurt his hands.
00:02:50Right, George?
00:02:51You can see right there,
00:02:52he's getting hit, all right,
00:02:54but all of those awkward places
00:02:56that breaks your knuckles,
00:02:57scratch your hands,
00:02:58all of the places that really hurt a guy,
00:03:00the shoulders and the top of the head.
00:03:02So he is not the great opponent as far as
00:03:04who you're going to knock out for Mayweather tonight.
00:03:06It's going to be rough on the hands.
00:03:08All right, so we'll see whether pretty boy Floyd
00:03:10can get the left and the right hand
00:03:12to make it through the fight in good order.
00:03:14If, in fact, they do,
00:03:15he's still the prohibited favorite.
00:03:17Hail of the tape now
00:03:18for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Jesus Chavez.
00:03:21And you can see that Mayweather is still
00:03:23only 24 years old
00:03:25despite all his accomplishments.
00:03:26He's been a title holder for nearly four years.
00:03:29He's five feet, eight inches tall
00:03:31and therefore three inches taller than Chavez.
00:03:33Has a seven-inch reach advantage.
00:03:35So Jesus is really going to have to get inside
00:03:37in this big ring.
00:03:39They both weighed in a half pound
00:03:40under the 130 pound limit.
00:03:42And since that time,
00:03:43according to our unofficial HBO scale,
00:03:45neither has put on more than seven or eight pounds,
00:03:48which indicates they were both in tremendous condition
00:03:50as they arrived at the weigh-in yesterday.
00:03:53Rules of the bout
00:03:54with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:03:56The Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Jesus Chavez fight
00:03:58is scheduled for 12 rounds
00:04:00using the unified rules
00:04:01of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
00:04:03There is no standing eight count.
00:04:05Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:04:07In case of a cut caused by an accidental headbutt,
00:04:09we go to the scorecards
00:04:11if the four rounds have been completed
00:04:13and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
00:04:15including the 12th and final round.
00:04:18Jim.
00:04:19All right, thank you very much, Harold.
00:04:21There was a celebrated independent film
00:04:23titled Split Decision,
00:04:25which documented the struggle of Jesus Chavez
00:04:28to clear his name from a youthful error.
00:04:31Got involved in an armed robbery as the getaway driver
00:04:34because as a lonely kid in Chicago,
00:04:37he, by his own admission,
00:04:38fell in with the wrong crowd.
00:04:40Now he is the darling
00:04:41of the social and political set
00:04:44in his new hometown of Austin, Texas.
00:04:46One of the reasons being that he is
00:04:49very bright, very sensitive,
00:04:54a rare fighter or perhaps a rare person
00:04:57who sees his whole background and history
00:05:01from an overall perspective,
00:05:05speaks softly,
00:05:07and carries some pretty big punches.
00:05:14Trained in Houston for the bout,
00:05:17trainer Ronnie Shields says,
00:05:18we got the quickest sparring partners we could find,
00:05:21but then again, of course,
00:05:22you don't find any sparring partners
00:05:24as quick as Floyd Mayweather.
00:05:30Body punching is the name of the game offensively
00:05:33for Jesus Chavez,
00:05:35who has not lost a fight
00:05:37in more than six years.
00:05:40has won 31 in a row.
00:05:52In fact,
00:05:53has been a top-ranked
00:05:56challenger
00:05:57for the last three years.
00:06:00And next up,
00:06:01pretty boy Floyd.

00:08:30wearing white,

00:08:32and weighing in
00:08:32at 129 and one-half pounds,
00:08:35he has an outstanding

00:09:06And here's the WBC number

00:09:08fighting out of the red corner,

00:09:25and he is universally
00:09:26recognized as
00:09:27pound for pound,
00:09:29one of the best fighters
00:09:30in the world today.
00:09:32From Grand Rapids, Michigan,

00:09:35the reigning and defending
00:09:37undefeated
00:09:39WBC
00:09:40super bantamweight
00:09:42champion of the world,
00:09:45pretty boy,
00:09:47Floyd Mayweather!
00:09:51Thank you!
00:10:02Okay, both these trunks
00:10:03are good.
00:10:04Bear my commands
00:10:05at all times
00:10:06and protect yourselves
00:10:07at all times.
00:10:08This is for the WBC title.
00:10:10Tesco has knocked my fight.
00:10:11Give out good luck.
00:10:13When this fight was set,
00:10:15Ron Shields,
00:10:17the trainer of Chavez,
00:10:18said,
00:10:19this fight is going to be held.
00:10:21Chavez replied,
00:10:23I've been there.
00:10:26Here we are.
00:10:28Here we are.
00:10:39Chavez has been known to be
00:10:41a slow starter.
00:10:43He says that he's well aware
00:10:45he will have to show more energy
00:10:47in the first and second rounds here
00:10:49than has been the case in the past.
00:10:51And with that in mind,
00:10:52he comes out pursuing Mayweather.
00:10:56You've got to be careful
00:10:57pursuing Mayweather
00:10:58because he functions best
00:11:00when someone is pursuing him.
00:11:02You really want to make certain
00:11:04that you do it just right.
00:11:05Don't just go there.
00:11:06Do, know exactly what you're doing.
00:11:09Mayweather lands
00:11:10the first solid body blow
00:11:12of the fight.
00:11:13A crunching right hand
00:11:14to the liver of Chavez.
00:11:17Chavez digging inside
00:11:19and just trying to walk through
00:11:21to the inside reaches
00:11:23against Mayweather.
00:11:25You know,
00:11:25it has one of those knee braces,
00:11:28a knee wrap,
00:11:29Chavez left knee.
00:11:31And I always question a fighter
00:11:33coming in with something
00:11:34on the wrapped up
00:11:35revealing an injury.
00:11:37You don't do that in boxing.
00:11:39Even if it's hurting,
00:11:39you hide it.
00:11:44Roach up his crowd
00:11:45chanting already.
00:11:53Straight right hand
00:11:54up the middle by Mayweather.
00:11:56Found Pater.
00:12:03Mayweather has the whole ring
00:12:04to circle on.
00:12:06When you follow a guy,
00:12:07you got to follow him
00:12:08and make his back
00:12:09hit the rope
00:12:09so he can stop moving.
00:12:11Don't give him the whole ring
00:12:11to move.
00:12:12And that's what Chavez is doing,
00:12:14allowing him to move
00:12:15the whole ring.
00:12:18Because so far,
00:12:19he's been following Floyd
00:12:20rather than cutting him off.
00:12:23Hard left hand inside
00:12:24by Mayweather.
00:12:25And a solid right hand
00:12:26uppercut as well.
00:12:28Mayweather finding
00:12:28the target early
00:12:29with power shots.
00:12:31Remember,
00:12:32Mayweather cannot function good
00:12:33landing that many shots
00:12:35to the jaw.
00:12:36If they're going to knock you down,
00:12:37he could hurt his hands.
00:12:43Is body-punting easier
00:12:44on the hands
00:12:45than head-punting, George?
00:12:46Well, if you can get
00:12:47the body punches
00:12:47right on target,
00:12:48but you don't want
00:12:49to scrape those elbows
00:12:50because that'll make you cry too.
00:12:53There's Chavez
00:12:54hitting the elbow
00:12:55of Mayweather.
00:12:56He hasn't had a history
00:12:58of bad hands.
00:12:59What Chavez
00:13:00is trying to do
00:13:02is make this
00:13:02an ugly fight
00:13:03against a fighter
00:13:05who prides himself
00:13:06on looking good
00:13:08in the ring.
00:13:09He's trying
00:13:10to upset
00:13:13Mayweather
00:13:13and make him
00:13:14fight out
00:13:15of his normal style.
00:13:17So far,
00:13:19Mayweather
00:13:19is staying
00:13:20right within himself.
00:13:21And he's trying
00:13:22to do it
00:13:22with his right foot
00:13:23too far behind
00:13:24his left foot.
00:13:25He can't make it
00:13:26ugly for Mayweather
00:13:26when your right hand
00:13:28is out of reach
00:13:28like that
00:13:29as Chavez has.
00:13:31It's been a brilliant
00:13:32first round
00:13:33for pretty boy Floyd
00:13:34who despite
00:13:35all of Chavez's efforts
00:13:36has managed
00:13:38to stay pretty
00:13:39and land
00:13:40the bigger blows.
00:14:05Bang bang uppercut.
00:14:07Keep going to the body
00:14:07like that.
00:14:08Bang bang uppercut.
00:14:09Okay?
00:14:10Stand up.
00:14:11Remember the bump?
00:14:12Bump, uppercut it.
00:14:13Come over there
00:14:13with that overhead light
00:14:14because it's down now.
00:14:15He's going to sit down
00:14:16with your limit now, okay?
00:14:17No, no.
00:14:18Give me the face.
00:14:18Choose the face
00:14:19a little bit for me, okay?
00:14:20Okay.
00:14:20Double jab, double jab.
00:14:21A lot of double jabs.
00:14:22Then shoot the right hand.
00:14:25Here is the Chavez
00:14:27trying to stay
00:14:29inside
00:14:32of the sharper,
00:14:33quicker
00:14:34Mayweather.
00:14:36Take away his range.
00:14:38Make him throw punches
00:14:40when he doesn't want
00:14:41to throw punches.
00:14:42CompuBox numbers
00:14:43show that in round one,
00:14:45Chavez rushed,
00:14:46threw a lot of punches,
00:14:48missed almost all of them.
00:14:49Six of 92.
00:14:50Mayweather took his time,
00:14:52waited for his chances,
00:14:53capitalized beautifully.
00:14:5523 out of 56.
00:14:56Big round for Floyd.
00:14:59Once again,
00:15:00Floyd Mayweather's
00:15:00using the ring.
00:15:02He's almost going
00:15:02from rope to rope.
00:15:05Too much room.
00:15:06You've got to stop him
00:15:06and make him go
00:15:07in the opposite direction.
00:15:09Well,
00:15:09his handlers
00:15:10and his promoter
00:15:11gave him the kind of
00:15:12ring that's almost
00:15:14a quarter of a mile track.
00:15:18Chavez should go around
00:15:19and make him circle
00:15:20in the opposite direction.
00:15:21His leg
00:15:23may not want to do that.
00:15:24Chavez lands the left hook.
00:15:27Mayweather guarding the body
00:15:29and Chavez says,
00:15:30I'm going to pound away anyway.
00:15:35This is the formula
00:15:36by which Chavez can benefit
00:15:38as he puts Floyd's back
00:15:40against the ropes
00:15:41and keeps him there.
00:15:50That's what you want
00:15:51to walk in that way
00:15:52by the home of the rope.
00:15:54Even if you're not
00:15:54hitting him hard,
00:15:55keep his back on the rope.
00:15:58It lasted about 15 seconds.
00:16:00As for a moment,
00:16:02in this giant ring,
00:16:03Chavez found the phone booth
00:16:05and he made an impression.
00:16:08Break, break, break.
00:16:17Keep it clean in there.
00:16:21Once you get Mayweather
00:16:22in the middle of the ring,
00:16:23he's got two minutes
00:16:24steps before his back
00:16:25hits the rope.
00:16:26You wasted time
00:16:27to keep him on the rope.
00:16:28You may not be able
00:16:29to get good shots,
00:16:31but keep him in that position.
00:16:40It stands to reason
00:16:43Floyd's feet are so good
00:16:44he's not going to be
00:16:45as effective offensively
00:16:46if his feet stop moving.
00:16:47That's right.
00:16:48Get him against the rope.
00:16:50Chavez lands a big left hook.
00:16:52Uppercut for Mayweather.
00:16:55Lean shots in this fight.
00:17:00Chavez showing that
00:17:02you can be aggressive
00:17:03and you can go to the body
00:17:04without making it
00:17:05a dirty fight.
00:17:06That's all they have.
00:17:08Good left hook
00:17:09to the body by Mayweather.
00:17:11Comes back to the ribcage
00:17:12once again.
00:17:13Straight right hand inside.
00:17:15Floyd Mayweather
00:17:16countering beautifully.
00:17:17What happens
00:17:18when you're like Chavez
00:17:19and you're throwing
00:17:19a lot of punches like that
00:17:21and then the guy
00:17:22comes back
00:17:22and hits you in the body,
00:17:23it takes a lot more
00:17:24out of you
00:17:25because not only
00:17:26are you wasting your energy,
00:17:27he's starting to get
00:17:28those body punches
00:17:29and it'll take your energy
00:17:30way more so.
00:17:32Mayweather's doing
00:17:33a good job
00:17:34of going to the body
00:17:34with that left hook.
00:17:42Lots of action
00:17:43in San Francisco.

00:18:02Among the stories,

00:18:03deals with the
00:18:04September 11 attack

00:18:16in the 1950s
00:18:17and how that decade
00:18:18shaped the game
00:18:19which today has become
00:18:20a multi-million dollar business.
00:18:22The Game of Their Lives
00:18:24premieres Tuesday,
00:18:25December 4,
00:18:27right here on HBO.
00:18:30Wait, wait, wait,
00:18:31point.
00:18:32All right.
00:18:33Can Chavez sustain this
00:18:35through 12 rounds?
00:18:40If he has that kind
00:18:41of conditioning.
00:18:44Lloyd Mayweather ran
00:18:45to the center of the ring
00:18:46and dropped the right hand
00:18:47right on Chavez's jaw.
00:18:51Not only did he get
00:18:52a good right hand,
00:18:53he got a left hook
00:18:53underneath also.
00:18:55But this can be
00:18:56discouraging to a fighter
00:18:57once you land
00:18:58those kind of shots
00:18:59when the guy comes
00:19:00after you more so.
00:19:08Well, Larry told you
00:19:10the question
00:19:10and you're looking
00:19:11at the reason why.
00:19:13Can Chavez do that
00:19:14for 12 rounds?
00:19:15It takes a lot of energy.
00:19:20But he's paid his dues.
00:19:22He can do it.
00:19:23Just got to be
00:19:24committed to it.
00:19:34Oh, scintillating
00:19:35right hand by Mayweather.
00:19:45But it's a mark
00:19:46of Chavez's strength.
00:19:47The kinds of punches
00:19:49that made quick work
00:19:50of Angel Manfredi
00:19:51and knocked down
00:19:52Diego Corrales
00:19:53in the early going
00:19:53haven't yet seemed
00:19:55to dent Chavez's
00:19:56commitment.
00:19:58Mayweather's done
00:19:59a good job of
00:20:00jugging and sticking
00:20:00that left hand
00:20:01right into the body
00:20:02of Chavez.
00:20:03Now that may
00:20:04turn things around.
00:20:05Oh, what a beautiful
00:20:06right uppercut
00:20:06by Mayweather
00:20:07as he countered
00:20:08through a Chavez left
00:20:09and landed it
00:20:09on the point of the chin.
00:20:11He's starting to
00:20:11hit Chavez on the
00:20:13elbows now.
00:20:14And he's got to
00:20:15be careful with his
00:20:15hands.
00:20:17Mayweather's starting
00:20:18to move around
00:20:19and miss those body
00:20:20shots hitting to
00:20:21the elbows.
00:20:29Asus Chavez is here
00:20:30to fight.
00:20:31Not going to take
00:20:32no for an answer
00:20:33despite how many
00:20:34brilliantly thrown
00:20:35punches land for
00:20:37Floyd Mayweather.
00:20:45and he gets up
00:20:46into the ropes.
00:20:48Chavez is going to
00:20:48throw the barrage of
00:20:49punches.
00:20:50More than one
00:20:50and he keeps the
00:20:51pressure on.
00:20:52shoulder Gibson
00:20:55knee
00:20:56knee
00:20:56knee
00:21:04knee
00:21:05knee
00:21:06knee
00:21:21neck
00:21:38With each passing round, they spend more and more time with Mayweather crowded against the ropes.
00:21:46So Chavez's plan is gradually taking effect.
00:21:56Go back to the back.
00:22:00Okay.
00:22:01I cut.
00:22:02No.
00:22:02I wasn't weak in the face though.
00:22:04Yeah.
00:22:06Keep the rubber cuts like this.
00:22:07Start using your face now.
00:22:09Keep your jab toward the chest.
00:22:11Jab to chest.
00:22:12Jab to chest.
00:22:13Right hand to the body.
00:22:14Hook your right hand back to the top.
00:22:16Okay.
00:22:16Come on now.
00:22:17Take your time baby.
00:22:18Relax yourself a little bit.
00:22:19All right.
00:22:20Okay.
00:22:25Have the pose now.
00:22:26Okay.
00:22:27Ace's job is his mother and dad in from Chicago and obviously somewhat nervous about their son's
00:22:35fighting prospects so far.
00:22:36So far there have been no indications of any problems with Mayweather's hands.
00:22:44I've seen some already Larry.
00:22:46Have you?
00:22:47He landed through a left hook and hit the right elbow of Chavez and it stunned him for a moment.
00:22:54He stopped going back to the body with his left jab.
00:22:56One thing they've done is they've brought a professional hand wrapper during training sessions.
00:23:02Before he, the last fight, Mayweather had wrapped his own hands and it was wrapping them improperly and that's how
00:23:10he aggravated the injuries.
00:23:12Errol Butterman, how do you have it through three?
00:23:14Okay, Jim.
00:23:15In the first two rounds.
00:23:16Now let's look at ways for these four fights.
00:23:18Clean punching and effective aggressiveness.
00:23:21And in the first two rounds, you couldn't take the effective aggressiveness away from
00:23:25Hayes Chavez.
00:23:25I don't care what anybody says.
00:23:27He took Floyd out of his game.
00:23:29He backed him into the ropes.
00:23:31And then he just took the fight to him.
00:23:33In the third round, Floyd caught him with that Hall of Fame stuff.
00:23:36The kind of things you're seeing right now.
00:23:38Win the third round.
00:23:39Two rounds to one Chavez.
00:23:4129-28.
00:23:42I have it.
00:23:43Two rounds to one for Mayweather.
00:23:53Mayweather is doing all the right things but he's taking a lot of body punches and no, that is not
00:23:57something that he can benefit by.
00:24:06He allows Chavez to just put his right hand in and just lean in, get close enough and beat him
00:24:11in the body.
00:24:29Now he's starting to go back to the body with that left jab.
00:24:33George, is Mayweather's foot movement gradually going away because of the body punishment dealt out by Chavez?
00:24:40Or because he's tempted to fight Chavez's foot?
00:24:42Both. Some of both. All of it both.
00:24:46Why would he be tempted to fight Chavez's foot?
00:24:48Yeah, because he's got that macho thing about him.
00:24:50He's just not going to just back away.
00:24:52He's knocked out big punches before.
00:24:54Yeah, but one reason is that he's been hit a few clean punches and they haven't had any effect on
00:25:00him.
00:25:00So he's not overly concerned with any one punch as Chavez, which tends to embolden you.
00:25:07Well, this has had some effect on him because his legs are starting to come closer and closer together as
00:25:11this fight goes on.
00:25:15But he's going right back to the body with his left jab, Mayweather is.
00:25:19Back to the body. Now that's Darren.
00:25:22Still think that he could take some more energy out of his opponent.
00:25:26Hard right hand up top by Chavez.
00:25:29Harold, did I see you say that you gave the first two rounds to Chavez and the third to Mayweather?
00:25:36Yes, Jim. Absolutely.
00:25:38Did you take the first round to Chavez? Absolutely.
00:25:41All right, that's all I need to know.
00:25:45All right, baby. Hey, how we feeling? How we feeling?
00:25:47Hey, this guy can't beat you, man. Listen to me here soon.
00:25:50But you've got to do the right things now, okay? Listen to me.
00:25:54You've got to use the jab on the guy. Jab the guy in the chest. Get close to him.
00:26:03Boyd Mayweather, for reasons unknown to us, came over to ask if you were our OK.
00:26:08George, are you OK?
00:26:11What was that all about?
00:26:12After you started to ask, I started to wonder.
00:26:16Keep doing what you're doing.
00:26:18Don't get him out of here.
00:26:22Smart boxer.
00:26:28Mayweather seems to like this part of it.
00:26:32Showing something else of himself besides being a boxing master.
00:26:39Perhaps he has no choice because Chavez is just coming to him so hard.
00:26:48Mayweather's doing an old boxing trick. As soon as the bell rings, he runs out there and land the initial
00:26:53right hand.
00:26:55He's done it twice, and effectively both times.
00:26:59Oh, these are old boxing tricks you seldom see anymore.
00:27:03Well, the one thing that Chavez conceded about Mayweather in our meeting with him yesterday, he said,
00:27:08look, he's a thoughtful fighter. He's always thinking in there. He said, even when a teen, as a teenager in
00:27:14the amateurs, you could see that he had all the wrinkles.
00:27:17And that only stands to reason because Lloyd grew up in a fighting family.
00:27:29Those fighters are landing some clean blows at close quarters.
00:27:35I like the body punching by Chavez. He's doing a great job of going to the body, keeping small, keeping
00:27:40those punches on this guy, hands on him all the time.
00:27:44Nothing bad can happen to you if you keep fighting like that.
00:27:48The momentum of the fight is gradually going in Chavez's direction, although it's easy to see Mayweather has greater skills
00:27:56or quickness.
00:27:58Chavez is just determined to make Floyd fight his fight and is winning that mental war.
00:28:06This is not Mayweather's fight at all.
00:28:11But as you said, he's got the macho thing. He may want to prove to us and to others that
00:28:16he can win this fight just as easily as he'd win the other guy.
00:28:24He's in with a guy who can take his best punch and come back and hit them with him.
00:28:28But one reason I think, George, is that Chavez is so close to him that Mayweather is employing short little
00:28:37punches that don't have the real power that he's had when he's got boom to punch.
00:28:50Mayweather picks certain occasions where he stands his ground and does not back up at all.
00:29:08Once again, Mayweather's starting to hit those top of the head of Chavez, those places where you hurt your hands.
00:29:17You know, one thing that's being established here by Chavez, which is that if Mayweather moves up to the higher
00:29:24divisions, Chavez would be a serious player.
00:29:28At this weight class.
00:29:31Sizzling right hand over the top by Floyd Mayweather.
00:29:35Counter left hook inside. Solid shots.
00:29:41Chavez averaging a hundred punches per round in the past three stanzas of work.
00:29:47You can do it.
00:29:47You can do it.
00:29:51You can do it.
00:29:52What you're doing right now.
00:29:54How you feel?
00:29:55Okay, now close out.
00:29:56Close out.
00:29:57You can.
00:29:58Hey.
00:30:07Deep breath.
00:30:08Deep breath.
00:30:09We're going to have the smart box today.
00:30:11That's all we want.
00:30:12Smart box.
00:30:14Everybody.
00:30:15Okay?
00:30:16And look.
00:30:17Keep hitting him on the body.
00:30:18Hit him on the arm first with the left hand and then shoot the overhand right.
00:30:22Okay?
00:30:22Chavez is obviously the busier fighter.
00:30:26Mayweather is landing some cleaner punches and punches that can be clearly seen by officials.
00:30:44Working out of there.
00:30:46Working out of there.
00:30:46Working out of there.
00:30:46Through five rounds.
00:30:48Cases Chavez has thrown 553 punches.
00:30:52Averaging well more than a hundred punches per round.
00:30:56He threw 114 punches in the last round.
00:30:59Low connect percentage.
00:31:01High activity.
00:31:02Hard right hand over the top by Mayweather.
00:31:04Chavez can take Mayweather.
00:31:06Shots too.
00:31:07At least for the time being.
00:31:09It was Chavez who initiated that with a nice left hook.
00:31:12A lot of people overlooked.
00:31:20I don't believe I've ever seen Mayweather have to work this hard in a fight.
00:31:32Mayweather's looking for one good shot here and there.
00:31:35This guy's keeping his head moving.
00:31:37Chavez keeping his body, shoulders moving where you just can't get one shot.
00:31:42Mayweather better start throwing three.
00:31:43Mayweather is like a romantic lead in a movie who suddenly finds himself in an action-adventure film.
00:31:55Yeah, but he's scored as well.
00:31:57He's had his moments in this action-adventure thriller.
00:32:01Now that's the kind of boxing match that Mayweather wants.
00:32:04There you go.
00:32:05Here he uses his feet.
00:32:05Move out of the way.
00:32:06Absolutely.
00:32:07And when he uses his feet, he can turn opponents into bad positions and he has a better chance
00:32:12to hurt them by getting them off balance.
00:32:14And he goes back into the middle of the ring so he has all of that move once more.
00:32:17He's not going to hurt Chavez standing toe-to-toe with him against the ropes.
00:32:22But he might if he can get him off balance and hit him with a clean shot in the middle
00:32:26of the ring.
00:32:26He's hardly going to hurt Chavez, period.
00:32:29This guy can take a good shot.
00:32:30He may have decided exactly what you say, George.
00:32:34And that's why he's starting to fight more with his legs than his fists.
00:32:45Well, I certainly think if Floyd fights this way with his feet, it's awfully hard for Jesus Chavez to beat
00:32:52him.
00:32:52Now he's back against the rope.
00:32:54That's what Chavez wants.
00:32:55Once he commits to that rope, you've got to get in there and keep him there.
00:32:59But in a sense, it's an admission of a kind of defeat.
00:33:04Rick, come here, come here.
00:33:05That toe-to-toe, he couldn't go with Chavez.
00:33:09Well, why should he?
00:33:11I mean...
00:33:11I'm not saying he should, but it was obvious that he was trying.
00:33:18Now he has him up against the ropes. He's got to take advantage of it.
00:33:23He's not going to be able to keep him against the ropes if Floyd is determined to get away.
00:33:28Floyd's feet and legs are just too good.
00:33:34Well, if he wants to sneak out the joint and win the fight, he can do it.
00:33:40Aren't you the one who always says, win this one and look good the next time?
00:33:44That's George's bank.
00:33:46This may be one of those nights for winning this one and looking good the next time.
00:33:55We're going to try him again. We're going to wait another round. After the round, we're going to try him
00:34:01again.
00:34:06CompuBox numbers, punches thrown per round, and you can see the difference in output as Chavez tries, sometimes desperately, to
00:34:15make the fight.
00:34:16Throwing 124 punches there in the fourth round.
00:34:19There in the sixth, Mayweather throwing about half as many punches, but via ring generalship, in my own personal view,
00:34:27winning the round.
00:34:31You heard Roger Mayweather say, we'll try him again later. I think what he means is, box him in this
00:34:40round, and try to get him, stop him, further down the road.
00:34:50Errol Wlademan, how do you have it through six?
00:34:53Okay, Jim, I got it all even. Three rounds apiece, 57-57.
00:34:56I got to tell you, just remember, effective aggressiveness, it's very, very important.
00:35:02I don't give a darn how many punches you saw.
00:35:05Jesus Chavez there in the first round.
00:35:07I saw the effectiveness of Jesus Chavez when he pressed probably whether it took him out of his game.
00:35:12But be as it may, Jesus Chavez, I had him winning one, two, and five.
00:35:16Floyd Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather, the other three, all take the nine.
00:35:19All even, 57-57.
00:35:22I added four rounds to two for Mayweather.
00:35:28Let him go, let him go.
00:35:32Mayweather's going south power, that's telling you that things are not going his way.
00:35:38I agree, George. More often than not when a fighter turns southpards because he's confused, not because he's trying to
00:35:46confuse his opponent.
00:35:48Things are not looking good.
00:35:55Now Mayweather steps back into his conventional stance.
00:35:58...
00:36:03...
00:36:06...
00:36:06sansky, stop trapping the glove, stop trapping the glove.
00:36:13...
00:36:13...
00:36:17referee John surely has done a good job
00:36:19haven't seen this referee before but
00:36:21he's been very little a part of the
00:36:23action and that's good
00:36:25excellent uppercut by Mayweather
00:36:31now Mayweather is
00:36:34punching and fleeing at the same time
00:36:36how do you get something serious on your
00:36:39opponent if you don't commit to it
00:36:44he knows that he can only land one shot
00:36:46he better get out of there
00:36:47that's what Mayweather is doing he throws
00:36:49his best shot and look for a way out
00:36:54three punch combinations at this point
00:37:01going down with his jab to the body
00:37:03thinking that he's going to come back
00:37:04with a straight right hand on top
00:37:06he's been missing all night with that
00:37:08straight right hand
00:37:13that's the reason he jabbed to the body
00:37:15left jab to the body to make his opponent
00:37:17lower his hands so he can get that
00:37:19straight hand right hand in there
00:37:23all those are hard shots to the body by Javier
00:37:26funny thing is that Chavez is the one who told us he would be jabbing to the body
00:37:30but Mayweather has used that tactic more frequently than has Jesus
00:37:37Jesus' game has just been this fierce determination
00:37:39to walk through fire and make the fight
00:37:43and I thought he won that round
00:38:06and I thought he won that round
00:38:12scheduled with the rubber match between John Ruiz and Evander Holyfield heavyweights
00:38:18HBO the heart and soul of boxing
00:38:27let me get it
00:38:27let me get it
00:38:29fasten your hand with your hands okay
00:38:30shoot them up a touch at this guy okay
00:38:33shoot them up a touch
00:38:39Ronnie Shields wants uppercuts from Jesus Chavez
00:38:46appears fresh not breathing hard despite the tremendous output of punches so far
00:38:53Mayweather back on his feet and moving to begin this round
00:39:02another thing that Chavez is doing is providing a blueprint for fighters in the heavier divisions
00:39:09on how to fight fight wayweather when he gets there
00:39:13yeah well they're going to have to bring that similar chin that Chavez has
00:39:16yeah well
00:39:16those guys taking some good shots
00:39:18you're not going to run into those every day
00:39:20well presumably they're going to be bigger and stronger
00:39:23this is one of those extraordinary chin
00:39:28well the left hook that hurt Mayweather
00:39:30big left hook shot in the corner and
00:39:33if nothing else
00:39:36Chavez has removed some of the veneer of Mayweather's confidence
00:39:40and made him look a little less certain of himself in there
00:39:42yeah well
00:39:43Roger Mayweather the power play says they were going to put Chavez
00:39:49in the microwave and cook him in about 8 or 12 minutes like a chicken
00:39:55some chicken some microwave
00:39:58hard right hand by Mayweather on the uppercut
00:40:01Chavez watch that head
00:40:04Chavez just digging and picking
00:40:10this is the way you fight a master boxer
00:40:13you get him on the ropes and you just throw what you can
00:40:16you don't care whether you hit him or not
00:40:17just keep something on him at all times
00:40:20four good right hands
00:40:22five by Mayweather inside
00:40:26you only get in trouble when you stop
00:40:30Mayweather landing solid right hand shot after solid right hand shot
00:40:34all with the uppercut motion
00:40:35Chavez just coming right through him
00:40:38his beard undented by Mayweather's assault
00:40:41here let him go
00:40:42let him go
00:40:42working
00:40:46left hook for Mayweather
00:40:47right uppercut again
00:40:50and these are the kind of punches that hurt your hands
00:41:00what a crowd
00:41:07what an exciting arena
00:41:08they waited 40 years for a championship fight
00:41:11in San Francisco
00:41:12and they are ready for it
00:41:14they are giving it
00:41:41hell of a round
00:41:50you okay
00:41:50my eye is bleeding
00:41:51oh it's one
00:41:52you okay
00:41:53watch it out
00:41:54huh
00:41:56go go go go
00:41:57go go
00:41:58go
00:41:59go
00:42:00listen
00:42:01give me
00:42:03it's gonna take care of it
00:42:04it's very small
00:42:04now you okay
00:42:05it's small
00:42:06it's very small
00:42:07shoot the hook and then go with the right hand
00:42:09okay
00:42:10use your face
00:42:11it's not using your face with this guy
00:42:12make it to catch him on balance
00:42:14okay
00:42:18two price fighters bringing everything they've got
00:42:22putting everything out
00:42:28terrific stuff
00:42:31Mayweather's showing he can brawl as well as box
00:42:34go
00:42:36Chavez showing he can take it as well as dish it out
00:42:39fascinating
00:42:39a round in which Chavez forced Mayweather to fight his fight
00:42:43and Mayweather landed a lot of clean hard socks
00:43:00the way Mayweather has started this round he thinks that he has softened Sarvez up in the last round and
00:43:06may be able to hurt him in this round
00:43:09and it didn't come out like that at all
00:43:11and it didn't come out like that at all
00:43:12he's got it
00:43:13now it's Chavez who lands a big right hand across the top
00:43:16after two hard kicking left to the body
00:43:19good work in here good work
00:43:20let him go keep it clean in there
00:43:22he thought he had him softer than this guy just took up hard
00:43:25took a deep breath and jumped right back on Mayweather
00:43:28and a welt under the right eye of Mayweather
00:43:36Chavez showing a heart as big as Texas
00:43:40as he just keeps coming
00:43:42through the hail storm of punishment that Floyd Mayweather is laying on him
00:43:57they got Cassius Green in the corner as a cut man this time
00:44:00and this is a new thing for Floyd Mayweather
00:44:03so he's going to have to work on that left that right right side of the eye tonight
00:44:09that doesn't look good for Mayweather at all
00:44:13because he's got no defense for that left hook
00:44:16Chavez over on that side
00:44:33look at the uppercuts by Mayweather snapping Chavez's head back
00:44:39brilliant clean hard shots for pretty boy Floyd
00:44:42and Chavez backs out
00:44:44a sign that Floyd is getting to it
00:45:00this is one of those fights where all of the skill and all of the practice
00:45:04goes out of the window and you got to fight it
00:45:07the only way you're going to get it
00:45:09you're going to have to get it right there with your gloves
00:45:12Mayweather's got to fight
00:45:13with all the skill he has
00:45:16all come to can you just fight back now
00:45:18can you fight back and fight better
00:45:22what a display of skill by Mayweather
00:45:25what a display of will by Chavez
00:45:38standing ovation round
00:45:40everybody up
00:45:42in the Belgram Civic Auditorium in San Francisco
00:45:45they're on their feet for a brilliant championship fight
00:45:50every time you hear him downstairs you heard him
00:45:52alright baby don't worry
00:45:53don't worry
00:45:54don't worry
00:45:55every time
00:45:55you can do it baby
00:45:57every time you hear him downstairs you heard him
00:46:00keep riding him downstairs
00:46:02alright
00:46:02don't press your heart
00:46:04ok
00:46:05you hear me
00:46:05yup
00:46:07yeah
00:46:08let me get you
00:46:10come here
00:46:11come here
00:46:12look at me
00:46:13you going to agree with me or not
00:46:15huh
00:46:16look at me baby
00:46:17I don't want you to
00:46:18you can't take these like this
00:46:20you understand
00:46:20you're getting hit too much now
00:46:23here is Mayweather
00:46:26landing crisp punches
00:46:28they're not full hard on committed punches
00:46:31they're short shots
00:46:34but very effective shots
00:46:38he was 30 of 60 in that round
00:46:40and he's the winner
00:46:43as Chavez's corner elects to stop the fight
00:46:47Ronnie Shields telling his fighter
00:46:49you're taking too many clean shots
00:46:52what can you say
00:46:53a guy has given that much
00:46:56you'd fall rather than let him do it in the ring and not on a stool like that
00:46:59he gave too much tonight
00:47:12Lloyd is saying to us
00:47:14I got him to punch himself out
00:47:17perhaps he hit the wall there
00:47:20in the ninth round
00:47:23and couldn't go on
00:47:24Ronnie Shields saw it
00:47:25I'm a little surprised
00:47:28he took those shots
00:47:30maybe that was a signal
00:47:31to Shields
00:47:33who knows him better than any of us
00:47:34of course
00:47:35that
00:47:36he was coming forward now at 80%
00:47:39instead of 100%
00:47:41and that's when you start to get tagged
00:47:43well he gave this crowd and us tonight
00:47:45something to jerk and jump out
00:47:47in our seat about tonight
00:47:48but I'm still jumping
00:47:49that was tremendous entertainment
00:47:51that was a good fight
00:47:52and it's a very interesting stoppage by Ronnie Shields
00:47:55who shows enormous compassion
00:47:57and again
00:47:57I want to underline the point that Larry made
00:47:59he knows the fighter better than anybody
00:48:02he's in a better position than anybody
00:48:04to know what it means
00:48:05to see that fighter's head snapping back
00:48:07from Floyd Mayweather's up against
00:48:09what a good fight
00:48:12championship effort
00:48:13by both fighters
00:48:16and Floyd Mayweather
00:48:17if he wanted to prove the point
00:48:20that he could fight somebody else's fight
00:48:21and still win
00:48:22he pulled it off
00:48:24all things
00:48:26approved
00:48:37stoppage
00:48:38came unexpectedly
00:48:41you might have gotten a hint
00:48:42when you heard Ronnie saying
00:48:44to what he
00:48:45saying what he said to Chavez
00:48:47about too many clean punches
00:48:48but
00:48:49I didn't think he was on the verge
00:48:50of bringing it to a halt
00:48:53I thought Chavez was doing a lot better
00:48:55than Ronnie Shields
00:48:56may have thought he was doing
00:48:57well particularly given that the fight
00:49:00was still on the table
00:49:01I mean
00:49:01it was on the table
00:49:03no better said
00:49:04you saw
00:49:04you saw Harold Letterman's scorecard
00:49:06which had Mayweather leading by one point
00:49:08after that round
00:49:09so
00:49:09it wasn't as if
00:49:11Chavez was out of the fight
00:49:13or at least it didn't appear that way
00:49:15let's hear the particulars
00:49:16from Michael Buffer
00:49:17ladies and gentlemen
00:49:20referee
00:49:20John Shirley
00:49:21at the request
00:49:23of the challenger's corner
00:49:25Jesus Chavez
00:49:26calls an end
00:49:27to the contest
00:49:28Chavez
00:49:29unable to continue
00:49:31the winner by TKO
00:49:34and still
00:49:35the undefeated
00:49:37WBC
00:49:38super bantamweight champion
00:49:40of the world
00:49:41pretty boy
00:49:43Floyd Mayweather
00:49:54final CompuBox numbers
00:49:56and you will see the margin
00:49:58by which Chavez
00:49:59out through Mayweather
00:50:00throwing
00:50:04469 punches more
00:50:06than did the champion
00:50:07but the champion landed 15 more punches
00:50:10by CompuBox estimate
00:50:12than did the challenger
00:50:13thus the doubling of connect percentage
00:50:15scores in the fight
00:50:16one judge
00:50:18Lou Filippo
00:50:18had Mayweather
00:50:19ahead
00:50:2089-82
00:50:21as you look at the power shot
00:50:23percentages
00:50:24and recognize that
00:50:25Mayweather
00:50:26by CompuBox estimate
00:50:27landed more than half
00:50:28of his power shots
00:50:2989-82
00:50:3188-83
00:50:3287-84
00:50:33so
00:50:33none of the three
00:50:34California judges
00:50:35has the fight
00:50:36as close
00:50:37as did Harold Letterman
00:50:39and now let's go
00:50:40Larry Merchant in the ring
00:50:42with both fighters
00:50:42thank you very much
00:50:44thank you very much
00:50:45first to Jesus
00:50:47why was the fight
00:50:48stopped?
00:50:49well
00:50:50Ronnie decided to stop the fight
00:50:52because
00:50:52I was getting hit
00:50:54I got careless in there
00:50:56I wanted the fight
00:50:57really bad
00:50:58and you know
00:50:59I got thrown off my game
00:51:00were you running down in energy
00:51:03after setting such a feverish pace?
00:51:05well
00:51:06you know
00:51:06that was my intention
00:51:07I figured
00:51:09Floyd would
00:51:10it would
00:51:11wear down
00:51:11after I keep my body attack
00:51:14fluent
00:51:14and constant
00:51:15but you know
00:51:15he's
00:51:16he held through man
00:51:17my hand to Floyd
00:51:18you know
00:51:19you know
00:51:20he's
00:51:20he's
00:51:21he's the champ
00:51:22and now
00:51:23I become his number one fan
00:51:26thank you very much
00:51:27Jesus
00:51:28Floyd
00:51:29was that a little tougher
00:51:30than you thought it might be?
00:51:31well first of all
00:51:32I want to thank God
00:51:33for the victory man
00:51:34without him
00:51:35you know
00:51:36all this wouldn't be possible
00:51:36I want to thank team Mayweather
00:51:38and I want to thank Grant Boxing
00:51:40you know
00:51:40the Versace of boxing
00:51:41but you know
00:51:42like I said before
00:51:42I took my time
00:51:44I stayed focused
00:51:44I listened to my corner
00:51:45I knew he was going to come out like that
00:51:46like I said before
00:51:47he's called the Matador
00:51:48but he fight more like a bull
00:51:49I let him punch himself out
00:51:50and get tired
00:51:51that was my game plan
00:51:51let him keep punching
00:51:52beating on my arms
00:51:53and eventually
00:51:54like I said
00:51:55I'm going to take him to deep waters
00:51:55and trauma
00:51:57did he ever hurt you?
00:51:59he's not a hard puncher at all
00:52:00but he's a
00:52:01he's a very very busy fighter
00:52:03hit me with some good shots
00:52:04none of the shots really hurt
00:52:05I'm not going to
00:52:06you know
00:52:06it seemed in the middle rounds
00:52:07after you saw
00:52:09that he could take your shots
00:52:11that you were going to
00:52:11box him for a while
00:52:12and then try to finish him
00:52:14is that what you did?
00:52:15well you know
00:52:16I wanted to
00:52:17switch my game plan up on
00:52:18you know what I'm saying Larry
00:52:19I wanted to switch my game plan up
00:52:20take my time
00:52:21stay focused
00:52:22and just listen
00:52:24had you ever fought
00:52:26had you ever fought somebody
00:52:26who just sort of
00:52:27hurdled himself at you like that
00:52:30and just dove into your chest
00:52:31and punched away?
00:52:32well a lot of the amateur experience
00:52:33helped
00:52:34a lot of amateur experience
00:52:36helped you know
00:52:36I love fighting on HBR
00:52:38I love being with top rank
00:52:38and it was just a learning experience
00:52:40for me tonight
00:52:42is this finally your last fight
00:52:45at 130?
00:52:46this is my last fight at 130 pounds
00:52:48I can't make the weight no more
00:52:49it was hard getting down
00:52:51you know 230 pounds
00:52:52but I got there
00:52:53I'm looking forward to
00:52:54moving up to 135
00:52:55fighting Paul Spadafore
00:52:57Jose Castillo
00:52:58and hopefully moving to 140
00:52:59and fighting Constance Zoo
00:53:00tonight
00:53:01my game plan was to
00:53:02take my time
00:53:02let the guy punch himself out
00:53:03take him to the late rounds
00:53:05and do like my uncle Roger said
00:53:06and stop the guy
00:53:07thank you very much Floyd
00:53:09congratulations
00:53:09on a terrific victory
00:53:11and a terrific fight
00:53:12back to you Jim
00:53:13alright
00:53:14thank you very much Larry Merchant
00:53:15George Foreman
00:53:16you heard Floyd saying
00:53:17once again
00:53:18it was his last fight
00:53:18at 130 pounds
00:53:20there are a couple of
00:53:21titleists
00:53:21he's talked about
00:53:22fighting at 135
00:53:23there are some
00:53:24even bigger money fights
00:53:26up at 140
00:53:26perhaps the hard-punting
00:53:27Casta Zoo
00:53:28somewhere down the road
00:53:29off what we saw tonight
00:53:30and his hands seem to come
00:53:32through this okay
00:53:33do you still see him
00:53:34as a great prospect
00:53:35for the higher weight classes?
00:53:36no doubt about it
00:53:37Floyd Mayweather is not
00:53:38going to run into a fighter
00:53:39with a chin like this
00:53:40in another 3 or 4 years
00:53:42he was in with Chavez
00:53:43who could take everything
00:53:44he dished out
00:53:45he kept coming
00:53:45I just don't understand
00:53:47the stoppage
00:53:47but I was very excited
00:53:48this was a good fight
00:53:49and if he can move up
00:53:50so can Chavez
00:53:51and at the end of the day
00:53:52what do you make of
00:53:53the way Floyd chose
00:53:55to fight the fight
00:53:56and how it ultimately
00:53:57turned out for him?
00:53:58I don't think it was a choice
00:53:59this guy put so much
00:54:00pressure on him
00:54:01and was so unorthodox
00:54:02and threw so many punches
00:54:03he had no choice
00:54:04but to fight that kind of fight
00:54:06and he wound up winning it
