00:00Oh we enter the final countdown to Mike Tyson's debut in a British boxing ring
00:03just like marvelous Marvin Hagler he keeps the doors shut here in the final
00:07moments before the fight the former heavyweight champ getting ready for
00:11local product Julius Francis of the response to Tyson these past couple of
00:14weeks outside this arena any indication this place is ready to reverberate when
00:19he shows his face he has received for the most part the royal treatment fan
00:24adoration disregarding his adversaries Tyson says they don't even know why
00:30they cheer for me there's just an excitement about the whole thing Tyson
00:34versus Francis and it's coming straight up
00:44I've trained hard I've worked hard I've watched Mr. Tyson throughout his career you
00:52know like I've been saying all along this is my time it's all about Julius Francis
00:58please welcome Julius Francis
01:0317 stones six and a half pounds 243 and a half u.s. pounds
01:11I've been training very hard and diligently
01:15consistently and persistently
01:17I'm looking forward to fight now I'm Julius Francis
01:22I'm going in there to war with him
01:25I'm here for war
01:27the one and only Mike Tyson
01:3015 stone 13 and three quarter pounds
01:37222 and three quarter u.s. pounds
01:41don't turn away don't blink your eyes dead round the boxing schedule in this heavyweight special attraction main event
01:53it is time for the main event 22,000 strong in eager anticipation here at the M.E.N. Arena in downtown Manchester England
02:12they're getting set for former two-time heavyweight champion Mike Tyson to take on British heavyweight champ Julius Francis
02:20while Francis is the hometown fighter no question who the fans came to see it has
02:26been Tyson mania here in England ever since he arrived a couple of weeks ago
02:30these folks incredibly fascinated and intrigued by Tyson of course he's a novelty here plus there's his unpredictability and one punch knockout power
02:40the fans feel they're about to see a resounding knockout or a train wreck
02:45he couldn't sell out Vegas his last fight but a different story here in England as this has become an event not a fight
02:52wouldn't it be nice if we came to an event and a fight broke out but that is not very likely
03:00Steve Albert back with the fight doctor and Fernie what about the influence that this crowd will have on the fighters here tonight
03:10well I think on Tyson Tyson's already so high off the reception he's had when these people roar out it's just gonna lift him like high octane gas
03:19throwing on the fire the other guy's coming in with earphones so he doesn't want to hear it
03:23he's foolish because it's such an impetus to be fighting before 22,000 of your hometown fans so both of them should be sky high
03:32he's been wearing those headphones throughout the entire week
03:36yeah they tell me he's studying French now
03:38he's actually listening to a rapper from New York City named Keith Murray some people think he should be listening to taps
03:45in there well he uh he's gonna be wearing them all the way up to the uh referee's instructions they tell us
03:51plus the sunglasses here with uh Bobby Chez and Bobby this appears to be a mismatch how do you think it's gonna play out
03:58Steve I really expect this to be a one-round blowout for Mike Tyson
04:01Julius never showed me in any of the tapes I reviewed any real boxing ability good speed or adorable chin
04:06every time he stepped up Maverick uh Ruiz uh Kalitschko all knocked him out
04:12Mike Tyson is as fast and a better puncher than all of them he can't win this fight
04:16don't go looking for a snack might won't be here when you get back yeah you know they talk about
04:20all these titles you're throwing Manila the rubble in the jungle they should have called this one
04:25don't go to the fridge let's get your keys to victory okay all right let's start with Mike Tyson
04:30the former champion Mike Tyson needs to work in behind that jab go to the body with his power shot
04:34he stepped forward with his counter punches here against Francois both of Mike on the left
04:38as soon as both of starts to move his hands you see the hands moving Mike steps in with the jab it's
04:43already halfway out there and he steps forward with his leg and fires the right hand when he
04:47steps forward it does two things Steve it maximizes power and it shuts the gap down he doesn't have to
04:52travel distance on taller fighters and both of is laid out with one shot
04:56Julius Francis has to use this strong jab trying to move Mike backward he can't let him come forward
05:03he's box smart from the outside he has the range he has the size he wants to keep the gap big he
05:09wants to put some distance between him and Tyson we can keep that keep him at bay with that big jab
05:13here against Williams he does that measures him with the jab and then lands a good right hand
05:18now the minute you see Williams backing up he's leaning back a little bit what Julius does is step in
05:24again with more combinations that's what he has to do with Tyson if he doesn't Tyson's going to get
05:28back in condition and swarm him that's how we write it up what can they do well when Mike Tyson enters the ring
05:39he may be well intentioned but as we've seen in the past that has a way of changing in a heartbeat
05:45despite the air body against Holyfield and the late punch with Norris Tyson promises to fight by the rules
05:51while foul play is unlikely let's hope we don't have to utter the words oh here we go again again
05:56the ring announcer was whipping this crowd into a frenzy earlier by
06:01introducing some of the local members of the star studded audience here many of the English fighters in the crowd
06:08so he really got them going but now they've sort of toned it down once again so we're awaiting the ring walks right now
06:14we're going to throw it up to Jimmy Lennon Jr. momentarily to the first bring in the Englishman Julius Francis
06:20and then to bring in the former world champion Mike Tyson you got to wonder what's going through the mind right now
06:25of Julius Francis moments before his ring entrance is he totally intimidated psyched out by this circus-like environment
06:36can he even get past the ring walk unlike fellow Brit Frank Bruno in 96 when he came in looking terrified to fight Tyson in Las Vegas
06:44we'll find out soon as we send it up to Jimmy Lennon jr.
06:47ladies and gentlemen it is time for our much anticipated main event of the evening our heavyweight special attraction
06:59prepare to welcome the participants as they make their way to the ring first ladies and gentlemen here is the British heavyweight champion how but a hand of welcome to Julius Francis
07:06Julius Francis
07:25Francis!
07:55Julius Francis from behind the giant Union Jack, he'll be escorted in by a troop of soldiers he trained at a British Army base.
08:25This is a real experience to him. Francis really has nothing to lose. There's no pressure. It's all on Tyson, although he's never, ever been close to a big time experience like this. He's used to fighting in front of 1,800 people, not 22,000.
08:55He's used to fighting at a British Army base and he was a small one.
08:58He's used to fighting in front of a British Army base and the British Army base at a British Army base.
09:05He's used to fighting a British Army base. It's an American famousAND-like war zone based on the British Army base.
09:11as you can see either of his own volition or somebody got to him he has taken off the sunglasses
09:31and the headphones and that's a good move because that would have looked silly well i think somebody
09:37told him i think he knew it himself here's his moment in the sun do you want to go in all the
09:40disguise or do you want people to see you look at these british troops in front of him they might
09:45have had uniforms like that out of the re-up for another few years in the army we had all the
09:49draft no good he made a lot of friends among the local members of the army when he was training
09:55in the army base near london now technically the best way to fight tyson is to back him up and slip
10:04punches and counter whenever he's had difficulty or loss that's usually been the correct formula
10:11do you see francis being strong enough and elusive enough to pull it off no i don't i don't think he
10:19can be strong enough but the most thing is he's so impressed by this crowd it'd be hard not to cave in
10:25all right birdie there's julius francis awaiting the ring walk of mike tyson we'll send it back up to our
10:32ring announcer jimmy lennon jr
10:34and now ladies and gentlemen making his way to the ring here comes the former undisputed heavyweight
10:51champion of the world mike tyson
11:07mike tyson is backstage he hasn't entered the scene as of yet so the fans are not seeing him in person
11:14we've got the warning sirens though as tyson gets ready to make his appearance
11:44usually mike tyson comes in roadless this is the first time we've seen him wearing a sweatshirt
12:08the question is what happens if tyson doesn't put this guy away comfortably in one or two rounds
12:17well immediately questions you're gonna mount does mike really have it still mentally as well as
12:23physically and is he deserving somehow overnight get better than he once was he's doing
12:31that's all right there's really not much latitude here tyson must impress
12:35his trainer tommy brooks says tyson's 80 ready mentally needs a few more fights physically he is
12:44excellent tail of the tape at 35 francis two years older tyson listed at 5 11 and a half probably more
12:50than a two and a half inch height advantage for francis sizable weight difference tyson called francis
12:57kind of fat at the uh weigh-in big five inch reach advantage for francis overall tyson looked a lot
13:03better physically the key british rules for this non-title affair only the referee scores the fight
13:08no standing eight count no three knockdown a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round
13:17so here at the men arena in manchester england we're getting ready for the main event mike tyson
13:24he's got to make the statement that he's back not only physically but mentally and that's immediately
13:34what's going to happen if he doesn't put this guy away in the first two rounds for argument's sake
13:51worst case scenario for tyson if he loses would that signal the end of his career as far as being a
13:57serious contender and what about another and i shudder to think controversial ending controversial
14:03ending will stay with him probably even longer than a loss a loss would just somehow eliminate him from
14:08the big picture but i don't think that's even possible mike tyson's y2k debut will there be any glitches
14:15we certainly had far too many of the decade of the 90s and only four fights in the last four years
14:26we're set to get it back up to our ring announcer jimmy lennon jr the classy jimmy lennon jr for

17:10he weighed in at 15 stone 13 and three quarter pounds 223 and three quarter u.s pounds his record
17:18includes 46 wins three losses one no contest with 40 of his wins coming by way out knockout
17:26he is the youngest man never to win the heavyweight title currently ranked the wbo number one contender
17:33the two-time heavyweight champion of the world ladies and gentlemen introducing the one and only mike
17:42i don't know what he's expected but it's a baton called nation i wish you both luck
17:57thank you
17:57thank you
17:58He didn't want to shake hands Tyson very eager to get this started and to get this finished he's been pacing like a caged tiger keep in mind 21st round knockouts to his credit 30 of his 40 knockouts and three rounds or less and Julius Francis many feel that his ring walk will time out longer than the fight this could come down to a case of courage will Francis win points on guts alone for the record Tyson's
18:28fast to stop now 30 seconds versus Marcus Frazier in 1986 let's see if he works in behind the jib Steve that's key it's one of the keys he's talked about working on and Francis going right at Mike Tyson perhaps figuring this is his only chance he's got at least he's fighting he's putting up a fight he's certainly not intimidated right off the bat he's putting up his back
18:51it looks a little softer in the middle does Francis too you have to wonder how hard a man trains to come in that soft but
19:01wild left by Mike Tyson boy if that connected it would have been all over yeah but the right to the body connected and it's soft and flabby it's going to be tested
19:11that flab is going to be tested Francis weighs more than 20 pounds more than Tyson
19:18he's 244 and a half Tyson said something at the weigh-in commenting about the lack of condition he felt
19:24Julius Francis had under his belt so maybe Mike wants to take it and work a couple rounds digging body shots
19:30by Mike Tyson but he got hammer with a right hand in return
19:34Tyson goes to the body but he gives up his face and this guy punches hard could be proud
19:43he's got a nice and holding off on that right watch your head says the referee Roy Francis no relation to Julius
19:56nice jab there and Tyson coming in with a jab to the body not looking bad at all
20:01everyone that's watched the tapes of Mike knows tying him up and frustrating is a way to get to him mentally
20:06Julius Francis do the same thing covering up as soon as the punches land tie up Mike
20:09nice and with a head and shoulders move left hook right uppercut kicking left to the
20:16midsection and he pushes Francis back to the ropes he's using his jab which they told him to and
20:23he's doing his strong it's hard
20:29oh trouble trouble breaking him I think Francis wants a little rest already
20:36well Francis has gone over two minutes that's a lot more than most people thought
20:41got left hook to the body it hurts Steve he could be in trouble right here he's standing down he goes
20:45he's up at eight
20:582 15 of the round 30 seconds to go
21:03can he survive the final seconds of the opening round
21:06he ties Tyson up
21:16still plenty of time for Mike to put him away Francis just trying to catch his breath 10 seconds to go
21:21Tyson again on the assault
21:25wicked uppercut which missed looking to end it here at the end of the round
21:31one two three four five six seven
21:37it can only be saved at the final round
21:40and he makes it and we got to read the sole of his feet
21:45which haven't after him
21:46breathing now
21:48well mike looks good guys mike looks good
21:51he's got his first you're past the first round man
21:55you see what i'm saying you're past the first
21:57sucking deep come on watch mike tyson's signature left hook
22:02he digs a nice left hook in here in the body and then it comes up under with another one
22:07then there's a right uppercut
22:10here comes the uppercut right on the butt
22:13that left hook to the body though that was the killer that's what really hurt
22:16that was the first one that was the second one
22:18the one to the head
22:19and there's that right uppercut once again showing you the first knockdown
22:27the last knockdown was a quick short shot
22:30round two mike just stuffs a jab
22:33just stuffs a power shotgun jab two knockdowns in the first round there's no three knockdown rule
22:39bison starts fast here in round two again he staggers francis
22:48tough body shot francis down right here right here
22:52to the top of the head speed killer shot
22:58he's game he gets up at eight
23:0016 seconds into round two he's been down three times how much more punishment
23:08there's a left upper count of twisting left down he goes again
23:11there was a good body shot right before the left uppercut to the chin
23:15down for the fourth time he gets up at six
23:19how much more can this guy take well the referee i think will give one more but that's going to be it
23:24that's going to be it if anything he's showing that he's got guts
23:29now for a fifth time and that's it it's waved off it's all over here in round two again that
23:34right uppercutter inside he's a big man like that with the leverage mike guys with vicious vicious
23:39punches well he looked as good as i've seen him look in the last few years i would say that's vintage
23:45mike tyson right then he came in he took care of business didn't get discombobulated
23:49and finished off the way he should true but we cannot lose sight of the caliber of his
23:54opponent no that's true but uh you still have to do it you still have to i mean you can't ask
24:00anymore he dropped him twice in the first round twice in the second what more can you ask but watch
24:05now he'll be criticized for not not ending the fight in the first round well you know what i think
24:10i think quite the contrary i think what mike tyson didn't do throw caution to the wind i don't
24:14think he got crazy or sloppy because julius did a smart thing he grabbed him he held him and mike
24:19just waited he knew it was coming what's another round what's another minute minute and a half
24:23he took his time he went back he got the instruction made the adjustments fight's over
24:27that's why i say it was vintage uh tyson didn't go crazy he didn't say oh boy i gotta score he just
24:33said let me go to the office and get this done and he did it the way he should have i think it was a
24:37very impressive win for mike tyson even if he was fighting the one and he didn't hit after the bell to
24:42end round one yeah most most of his fights end in lawsuits this is one where there won't be a lawsuit no
24:47controversy didn't foul he played it by the rules let's call it like it is no you can see the true
24:52pain in the face of julius a couple of times there were there were marches to the body when he grimaced
24:57and then that went on top of his head the right hand in the corner it was just all pain in his face
25:03so mike tyson wins fair and square there's a novelty it's been a while since we've been able to say that
25:10he started to lose count here of knockdown we'll take a look at the hat trick here mike tyson's got
25:18him in the corner he's working that body again he throws a nice right hand there was right on top of
25:23the head and i could see my vantage point the pain in julius's face here comes number two mike knows
25:30he's got in trouble he's going to head in makes a beautiful adjustment right hand to the body and a
25:34left hook up left hook sort of uppercut to the temple but the right uppercut to the belly really did the
25:39damage and this is to finish it off basically just needs to hit him here but he comes in with
25:46another right uppercut which grazes right right in julius's mouth three knockdown rules in and the
25:51referee's seen enough anyway i'm sure he has you know that last one didn't even land flush he just
25:56landed kind of you know the last uppercut it wasn't real it's just to be so far gone he was just trying
26:01to stay up was julius and there was no point to him if that thing landed flush it would have been a count
26:05to 10 and 20. so as frank baloney the manager julius francis put it if he gets out around one it's a
26:11moral victory so according to frank baloney it's a moral victory not only is it a moral victory but
26:15whoever sold the advertising on his shoes got a lot of coverage the london daily mirror fifty thousand
26:20dollars tko round two will get the official from jimmy leden jr ladies and gentlemen we have the time
26:28one minute three seconds and round number two a referee in charge roy francis stops the contest
26:35the winner by way of technical knockout in his european debut the former undisputed heavyweight
26:42champion of the world mike tyson
26:55so mike tyson beats relatively unknown unheralded englishman julius francis
27:01second round tko let's get it over to jim gray jim all right thank you very much i'm joined by mike
27:07tyson mike you knocked him down five times what did you expect coming into this fight of julius francis
27:13all praise be to allah i bear witness there's no god but allah i'd like to thank mr jack straw for
27:18inviting me over to his country and taking all the slack for me and i just like to say um i love my
27:24children mikey reina gina and amir i'm coming home i love you see you soon monica um now what you were
27:30saying what did you expect with this fight you knocked him down five times what did you expect
27:34to francis in front of his hometown i knew he was going to try to show a lot of heart but my objective
27:38is to go in there and just bang him out i wanted to work his body last punch really was more of a
27:41body punch than anything how would you assess where you are in your comeback now mike it's been seven
27:46rounds in the past year i don't know long way to go but i'm still trying and um when you say a long way to
27:52go you mean a long way to go to fight for a title or to be in good shape or where probably the fight
27:56for a title i wish i looked as good i felt as good as everybody said i look but um i'd like to thank my
28:01staff um all my sparring partners i trained hard for this fight i was in great shape i was prepared to
28:07go the whole 10 15 rounds whatever it was um i love you shawnee too bad you couldn't come donnie centel
28:13x1 k born mike go ahead and wipe your nose for a second him wipe your nose for a second you got some
28:19stuff coming out of there i'd like to say the problem that me and you had i'm a big enough
28:23man to squash and be your friend i was a little biased because i love pete rose and i was very
28:27upset about the conversation you and p rose i appreciate that mike mike let me ask you the
28:34experience here in great britain they treated you over here very very well much better than you're
28:40treated back home how do you feel about the experience here will you come back and will you
28:44continue this world tour listen um i'm an american i'm gonna continue my world tour but i'm i'm from
28:50brownsville brooklyn new york and catskill new york and those are my hometown and i love in europe
28:57and i think the next couple of fights i'm gonna have it will be in europe finally mike the fans would
29:01like to know i'm sure a legitimate opponent a recognizable name is that going to be in the plans
29:06next who is next oh i'll fight anyone shelly finkel tell me to fight you know what i gotta say that
29:12your mind punches hard for real thank you are you okay yeah yeah i am now the body shots were
29:19the thing weren't they you were very courageous tonight you hung in there and lasted around did
29:22you do as well as you thought you would well no obviously not because i i believed i could come
29:28here and win you know that's what i believe you know i'm saying i believed i could i could win the fight
29:33thank you for having us over here mike finally you say whoever shelley says to fight can you give us a
29:38name or two mike shelley we got you here while mike turns around and gets some congratulations i don't
29:44have anything lined up when mike comes back we're going to sit down and discuss it we have a goal to
29:48win the title this year any thoughts on who you might want to fight next mike um it doesn't matter
29:53it's whatever shelley says sign him up mike thank you congratulations tonight okay good luck to you
29:57we always have been thank you all right back to you steve all right thank you very much jim mike tyson
30:04making amends with jim gray and also showing for the first time respect in the direction of the man
30:11he just pummeled julius francis of england who did show a measure of courage by coming out fast
30:19as i mentioned during the blow-by-blow portion perhaps thinking that was the only opportunity he
30:25he had of course peter mcdealey tried that tact too but to no avail but he was stopped here rather
30:32convincingly in round number two after being put to the canvas on five occasions as the crowd settles
30:38back down now after uh that uh uproar let me ask you uh ferdy what does this do for mike tyson are we
30:46are we talking about a restoration of confidence here obviously not only a restoration it puts the
30:51train back on the track mike has had so many distractions so many things have happened to him
30:56that are not boxing that affect him in the ring out of this is finally one of those cleansing
31:01experiences where you say i went to see mike tyson fight i saw him fight a good fight i saw him do
31:05what he's supposed to do he's on track let's go to the next station give him a better opponent and
31:10let's see what he does see to me he needed this fight to get himself together he needed a clean fight
31:16to go in to get praised by the audience to have a sellout crowd roar him in and to win big he needed that
31:24in his soul that's what he needed he's got it now back to the states or back to europe to make a
31:29difference they put a good opponent up against him and let's see where we go i think he's got
31:33a chance of getting his title back i really do think he's got a chance to get his title back if
31:38he could just stop all those ancillary difficulties to get in his way which leads me to my uh next
31:45question he wouldn't reveal it but in your mind what do you think should be next for uh mike tyson should he
31:52come back to europe and continue a world tour because he's been received very well here he's very
31:56well or should he fight a guy like lou sabores or shannon briggs in late march at the meadowlands
32:01listen i can tell you we had we were with ali as you know we went on a world tour it was so
32:06good it was so great for ali to go to these countries and become worshiped that he grew and
32:11grew and grew into a gigantic figure this guy could go to germany and be big tomorrow france big
32:17and then occasionally back to new york where he's from let him fight in the garden let him fight
32:21up in the catskill someplace but uh if i were this guy's managers i'd do a little alley shuffle i go
32:27off to to a couple of foreign countries and then take the united states for a really good fight it's an
32:32interesting point as we turn back to uh former world champion bobby chez he he has garnered uh success
32:40here in a short time in terms of fan approval uh in europe do you think the more attractive he gets here
32:47across the atlantic the more attractive he gets back in the united states and in particular i think
32:52steve as long as he fights well and even though he didn't fight a great opponent here the quality of
32:56the opponent is very questionable but he did the right things he made the right adjustments he didn't
33:00hurry he didn't get anxious he didn't foul he didn't go crazy he didn't lose his cool his thought
33:05process seems to be much better in control they're working with him he's making the adjustments and by his
33:10own admission he's not ready yet he needs a little more time he needs work and he clearly needs work
33:14against better competition stiffer competition so we know exactly what he can do in the firefight well
33:20he said he'd like about three more fights before the inevitable showdown the eventual showdown with
33:27unified champion lennox lewis perhaps in the year 2001 do you think that lewis versus tyson will become
33:35a reality you know it's hard to say and it's not just that the fighters may not want to fight because
33:39i'm sure they do but i think it's got to do with promoters promotions networks and contracts it's
33:44interesting lewis might need tyson more than tyson he's lewis and that's something and lewis is the
33:50unified champ so go figure only in boxing folks well showtime championship boxing returns in just
