02:15nate miller didn't look that impressive but it was all academic cut it otherwise final spot
02:19couldn't win the fight yeah i'm sure there are people who looked at a picasso painting and said
02:22they don't look like real people to me uh and then some i'll tell you what picasso wasn't always
02:26pretty but he was good that's the thing and the same thing with nate miller he retains
02:29the championship and hey as we said a w is a w back to you jb

02:44continue his way back to the top of the boxing world his opponent is james house of pain stanton and
02:51mccall looks to be an undesirable tenant in that house tonight we'll take a look at this champion the
02:56former champ oliver mccall who wants to regain his lofty status we'll do all of that after this
03:30you're taking a look at james the house of
03:32pain stanton a young man who comes in awfully confident he insists that mccall is over the
03:37hill and that he will help to bury him in a victory tonight we'll find out if that transpires well

04:50stanton mccall wants the title back this will be a part of the way on the road back
05:05it's a cool saturday night here in south florida as we look at the bayside view of the port of
05:10miami
05:10the largest cruise port in the world with as many as eight giant ships docked in port miami is a
05:17centerpiece of world travel and commerce and welcome back to fox saturday night fights in tonight's main
05:24event a man who was definitely considered one of the world's most dangerous heavyweights
05:28former wbc champ oliver mccall steps back into the ring that on the heels of what was a short
05:34night's work last month right here on fox and although mccall reached the pinnacle of his profession
05:39capturing the heavyweight title in september of 94 his career has been marked by inconsistency
05:47now i became champ finna become champ again for the second time one man one goal
05:58tyson or no one else is going to stand in my way of me becoming heavyweight champion again
06:03oliver mccall is bullish on regaining a heavyweight belt maybe because winning the wbc title from lennox
06:09lewis in 1994 was one of the most exciting moments of his life maybe because losing it to frank bruno
06:16one year later was one of the worst in the dressing room me and my people was talking about how
06:21we're
06:21going to approach the fight they wanted me to approach the fight where they where i'd be more
06:25just uh a little cautious of bruno's power as simple as that and i went out there and that's the
06:31way i done it i just took it too far caution is not a character trait often associated with mccall
06:37he has walked on the wild side even been incarcerated he's been called eccentric and goofy but what he
06:43likes being called best perhaps is dad he's gonna be a boxer you have to be something else other than
06:54the fighter we got enough of those in the family they support me very well you know um they know
07:01when
07:01i punch and don't really fight they know when i really give it my all and they're looking for it
07:06they'll be looking forward to me to fight now when they saw me lose the title i mean it really
07:10really shook them up real bad and um i really think that i owe it to them to really show
07:16not just my
07:17children but mainly them that i can become champ again okay every basket counts just like y'all at
07:24school playing every basket counts all right at age 30 mccall makes every minute count these days
07:30with his family and with his training he remembers what it was like waiting for opportunity to knock
07:36i had to really fight my way up to getting my chance to don king and the boxing world because
07:41uh
07:42as far as the boxing world i didn't think i had a chance anyway but through my perseveringness me
07:46persevering in the boxing you know don saw that he said wait up i'm gonna have to get oliver a
07:51chance now
07:52he made the most of his first title shot against lewis and until he gets another one he is daring
07:58other
07:58fighters to take their best shot at him i'm looking forward to someone making the atomic board submit
08:03make my body submit in that ring you bad tyson or no one never done that i don't think it'll
08:09never be done
08:13oliver mccall indeed has big plans to get back on top but this man james stanton stands in his way
08:19stanton is a supremely confident young fighter who insists he's hungrier than mccall
08:24and has the precision punches to carry him to victory up next barry tompkins and bobby chez
08:30will have all the action between mccall and stanton after this
08:45we welcome you back to the city of miami florida on a beautiful spring night barry tompkins along
08:50with bobby chez we come now to our main event in the heavyweight division oliver mccall gets it on
08:56with james stanton they're going 10 rounds he is one of the more enigmatic personalities in the sport of
09:01boxing and in fact it must be said oliver mccall's toughest opponent oftentimes has been oliver
09:07mccall and now he's being made to play a waiting game waiting for his shot at mike tyson we'll get
09:13in line oliver mccall and the simple fact is bobby oliver mccall is tough he can punch he's got a
09:19good
09:19beard and he's beaten mike tyson up albeit it was in a sparring situation tyson is making him wait and
09:25the question that i have for you really is he being victimized by his own talent well you know i
09:29said for
09:30years oliver mccall was one of the best kept secrets in the heavyweight division and right now he has
09:34to wait for a couple reasons first is he lost his title mike would have had to come to him
09:38if he still
09:38had the title he lost to bruno first big mistake secondly all the other world champions won't fight
09:43him because they also want to fight mike tyson bigger money bigger notoriety bigger bigger and better
09:48challenge and lastly oliver mccall can fight the best fight you'll see in the heavyweight division in
09:53the next two years will be between mike tyson and oliver mccall because he knows him so well and he's
09:58that good and the simple fact is patience has not been the virtue of this man oliver mccall so what
10:03he's got to do tonight is keep in mind is keep his mind on business worry about first things first
10:07right
10:08the last time his mind was off business was with frank bruno he looked lackluster he didn't get the job
10:11done he can't allow that to happen now he's going to be making made to wait he's going to wait
10:16but he's
10:16got to wait patiently and he's got to wait correctly and when we talked to him yesterday quite frankly he
10:21was kind of on a down he had talked to don king don said you're just gonna have to wait
10:24your turn
10:25he wasn't a happy man about it he hopes he can take all that vengeance out tonight on james stanton
10:45fox saturday night fights are brought to you by miller beer brewed from the heart of the hops for a
10:51beer
10:51with heart that goes down easy reach for what's out there
10:59city of miami once again spring just a couple days old here and yet it feels a little bit like
11:03winter
11:03here in south florida starting to warm up a little bit though as you look at the fine shots provided
11:08by
11:08the blockbuster video blimp one of the fastest blimps flying the blockbuster video blimp has exceeded speeds
11:13equivalent of 70 miles an hour across the ground this year its annual tour is going to take it to
11:18the
11:19west coast to the united states for the first time so we come now to the 10 round heavyweight bout
11:26our feature fight of the evening oliver mccall and james stanton we've talked about oliver mccall let's
11:31talk for a moment about james stanton he's 16 and one he lost his last fight but in that fight
11:35he broke
11:36his hand and he feels he's not only ready he feels he's more than capable of handling oliver mccall time
11:42will tell let's take a look at the tail of the tape stanton seven years younger than oliver mccall each
11:49man is six foot two inches tall weight advantage to oliver mccall and also a reach advantage to the
11:58former champion this division doesn't really mean a whole lot the florida rules there will not be a
12:03standing eight cop the three knockdown rule however will be in effect only the referee can stop the fight
12:08the fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round and that of course includes the last round
12:13oliver mccall all business as he comes into the ring and he's going to have to keep it that way
12:17that
12:17if anything has been his biggest problem we'll see if he can get it together tonight against the tough
12:22opponent james stanton let's get to the center of the ring now and the introduction to the fighters

14:47here is the former heavyweight champion of the world introducing the atomic bull
14:52Oliver McCall!
14:58Once again a referee in charge, Bill Connors.
15:01Now to give instructions.
15:05Seconds only.
15:16Let's go, bring him on out.
15:23Where's he at?
15:25Alright, now let's be quiet and listen to my instructions here.
15:29Alright, you both received instructions.
15:31I want you to obey my rules and my commands in here.
15:36These trunks, both of you are wearing your trunks very high.
15:40Okay? I'll be the one that decides what's a low blow here.
15:43Understand that? I don't want any noise from the corners on that.
15:46Any questions over here?
15:49Any questions over here?
15:51Touch gloves and good luck to both of you.
15:52Touch gloves!
15:54Touch gloves!
15:56Well, nobody blinked.
15:58Nobody touched gloves.
15:59And now we'll see who's really got it.
16:03McCall in the white trunks.
16:04And James Stanton in the frills.
16:09Stanton.
16:10And if you've heard this before, you have.
16:12Says he wants to jab, move, give him angles.
16:15I think that's what we said about dry on the spot.
16:18I gotta feel it's gonna be a little different.
16:20I'll tell you what, both of the corners for these fighters
16:22are very pumped up in sight.
16:23No!
16:27Stanton really was talking
16:29like a confident fighter when we spoke with him yesterday
16:31and it was not a false confidence.
16:33Good quick right hand by
16:36Oliver McCall, but Stanton didn't move.
16:38Let me see the difference when he jabbed.
16:40He jabbed in. He jabbed with intention.
16:42He jabbed with a purpose.
16:44And his body did not do that.
16:46Covering on the inside. Covering nice.
16:48Oliver's bigger. A little stronger.
16:50Probably the better puncher. He's gonna have to move.
16:52Give him angles. Get him tired.
16:53Lost his last fight as we said to Daryl Wilson.
16:55Wilson incidentally went on to knock out Shannon Briggs
16:57in the nine of the young heavyweights.
17:00And in that fight, Stanton broke his hand.
17:03There was some question about whether or not
17:04it was really broken.
17:05But the commission doctors said yes, in fact it was.
17:09You know, if you bruise a bone severely,
17:11it's just as good as a broken hand for pain's sake.
17:13And that's what it all amounts to,
17:14with how much pain he was in.
17:17He feels the loss in its own way.
17:19It was good for him.
17:20Says it's a new career now.
17:23Burning it in my heart, he said.
17:24All right, tie that break in there.
17:25Break in there.
17:26Let's go.
17:26I know what that's like.
17:27I've had heartburn for 30 years.
17:29I'm just getting over mine.
17:34All right, keep them all loose.
17:36Let's go.
17:36Work it in there.
17:37Work it.
17:41All right, hold it.
17:42Tie that break in there.
17:43Break in there.
17:43Let's go.
17:43Oliver's call, simply said,
17:44can be as good as he chooses to be.
17:46And there have been times in his career,
17:48he's been brilliant.
17:49Put over him right by Stan.
17:51Stan working.
17:51Nice left hook to the body.
17:52You'll notice he leans to the side
17:54to get out of the way of Oliver's right hand
17:55while throwing his own.
17:56You watch him do it.
17:57He'll lean to the side,
17:58whip that right hand and try and get his head
18:00out of the way of Oliver McCall.
18:02Very good right hand.
18:08Now, McCall has all the skills, as we've said,
18:10and that's exactly what's victimizing him,
18:13so far as Mike Tyson is concerned.
18:15Tyson is in absolutely no hurry to get to Oliver McCall.
18:17What I say about Oliver is he's sneaky good,
18:20or he has a subtle goodness to him.
18:21Not a Tyson puncher, but a good puncher with both hands.
18:24Not Rocky Marciano's chin, but a great chin.
18:27Not Ollie's speed, but good speed.
18:28He has all the things in good amounts,
18:30and he's just not super human, you know?
18:33And he just brings it all in,
18:35and when he gets in the right move,
18:36he puts it all together.
18:37And that's what it is.
18:38It's his head.
18:42Well, he's been a terrific underdog.
18:44His problem is he has not been a very good front runner.
18:49It's tough being a favorite.
18:50All the pressure's on him.
18:54You're holding him there.
18:55Let's go.
18:56Get your hands loose.
18:59On the left hand from Stanton.
19:00Stanton holding his own.
19:02McCall here in the first round.
19:03Stanton's fighting a very smart fight.
19:05He's covering nice.
19:06He's keeping his hands in his defense tight.
19:07He's countering well.
19:08And Oliver's loading up a little too much
19:09because he's a bigger man.
19:11So competitive first round.
19:13End of one.
19:14And we'll be back.
19:17Second round in Oliver McCall's corner.
19:20Georgie Benton, one of the real sages in the sport of boxing.
19:23We've been talking about Philadelphia fighters all night long.
19:26Now we're looking at one of James Stanton.
19:27There's nothing better than Georgie Benton.
19:32Georgie knows them all.
19:33He's good for all of those gym wars.
19:35Good right hand from Stanton.
19:37Not a powerful right hand, but enough to keep McCall off him.
19:41Nice double jab.
19:42Followed in behind that jab to the right hand.
19:44The jab, again, setting up the combination.
19:47And Stanton doing an effective job of kicking with McCall's jab as well.
19:53Stanton's fighting a smart fight right now.
19:56See, Oliver's trying to load up because of his size and his strength.
19:59But right now, Stanton's sidestepping him a little bit.
20:02Not letting him hit him with anything big and solid.
20:05But sneaking his own stuff in between.
20:07These two, incidentally, have faced each other before.
20:09They did spar on one occasion in Carson City, Nevada.
20:13Each man, of course, has a different memory of that sparring session.
20:17They always do.
20:20Stanton said that McCall couldn't match his hand speed.
20:27McCall basically said Stanton was a chicken.
20:30Wore a big head piece.
20:32And now he goes down and just kind of crumbled.
20:35Left hook to the body.
20:36Sneaky shot up underneath.
20:37It hurt.
20:38I saw him buckle.
20:39Thought he was okay.
20:40And he decided to take the eight count and take the right.
20:42Take your step to me.
20:43Let's go.
20:47And the strength of Oliver McCall showing there.
20:55Now McCall's gonna jump on you.
20:57Stand does not appear to be hurt.
21:01I do believe it was a good body shot.
21:02And I'll tell you.
21:03It takes a little strength out of you.
21:09And the kind of punches that last,
21:11and show up between the three rounds later.
21:12It hurt you again.
21:13Let's go, stick that one.
21:22A good left hand from Stanton.
21:25There's a nice right hand down the middle of McCall Block,
21:27hit me through a hook right around his guard.
21:28Smart move.
21:30Let them hands alone.
21:31Let's go.
21:32It's got to work it out.
21:33All right, thank you.
21:34Great clean.
21:35Get the body.
21:36Keep it.
21:37Get the body.
21:39Well, Stanton will have a little more respect now
21:41for the power of our ball, quite sure.
21:44That was part of the gloves.
21:52No left hand from Stanton over the right hand of McCall.
21:56Just Stanton working on the inside knife,
21:57trying to get his hands around Oliver.
21:59Oliver has his hands up and tight.
22:01Got to come around.
22:04But you can't stand in there with Oliver.
22:06He's too big and too strong.
22:08You don't want to get too brave against Oliver McCall.
22:11Well, Stanton did pretty well in that round with them.
22:12And one glaring exception.
22:16But I'll tell you what, I'd make that a 10-9 round
22:18because I think Stanton wanted to rest the round.
22:21No, I still got to give it a 10-8.
22:23You know more than I.
22:26Let's get a towel under this.
22:28Let's get a towel under this.
22:29Only one thing you're doing, baby.
22:30You're waiting on him in front of the ring.
22:32Take a bite.
22:33You're waiting on him in front of the ring.
22:35You're standing waiting in front of him.
22:36Don't wait in front of him.
22:38You don't want to stay toe-toed with the guy.
22:41This is where your boxing ability come together.
22:43Drop down.
22:44Drop your hand down.
22:45Deep breath.
22:51All right.
22:52Deep breath.
22:53Come on.
22:54Deep breath.
22:55Only one thing you know, he want to stay in close so he can hit you.
22:58You don't want to be in there.
23:00You're serious.
23:01There you go.
23:02In super slow-mo, you'll see the body shot.
23:03He digs a nice left hook up underneath.
23:06And there is the uppercut.
23:07Actually, that's an uppercut to the chin.
23:10Now, I don't know if the body shot followed, but he had gotten one in there.
23:13No, it was a delay on the uppercut to the chin.
23:15It was not a body shot.
23:16The body shot didn't work.
23:19There's a really delayed reaction to that, too.
23:22I thought it was another left uppercut underneath in the body and in between.
23:25Hard to see from this angle because his back was to it.
23:32They want Stan to get off first.
23:34We'll see if he does here.
23:38Stan on his bike a little bit to start the third round.
23:50You see, he's boxing fighting a different fight than we saw with Laspata.
23:53He'll slip and he'll come in.
23:54He'll get his shot off.
23:55He'll take his shot.
23:56A forward shot with some power on Stan to play in his feet,
23:59which Laspata did not do.
24:00Got a pretty good jab, Stan.
24:03A lot of left-hand misses from McCall.
24:13Nice right hand to the body by Stan.
24:19Stan's trying some pretty good skills.
24:27You know, with Oliver and McCall, you never can be too sure which type of fight he's going to fight.
24:31An offensive fight, a defensive fight.
24:33There's no set formula to beat him.
24:34But with Oliver, I can tell you two or three things.
24:36You've got to be able to take the fight.
24:37You've got to be able to give him and get respect.
24:39And you have to be in good shape because he's going to be there for a while.
24:42And one thing he did say, he said, I'm never going to lose another decision,
24:44which means if he goes out, he's going to go out of the shield.
24:48You know, that's one thing to say,
24:49and it's another one when you have a man in front of you,
24:51you can't control what he does to you.
24:53And if Stanton, who's winning this round,
24:54could really box a move for the entire fight at this pace,
24:57you never can tell.
24:59Now the problem is if that last round, in fact, was a 10-8 round,
25:02in a short fight, a 10-round fight,
25:04remember, this is not championship distance.
25:06You've got to win two rounds just to get back to even.
25:08This is true.
25:09This is true.
25:10A 10-8 round is devastating,
25:11especially in a fight that's not going a long time.
25:14Although, you ask any of us,
25:15we'll tell you 10 rounds is long enough.
25:22See, if Oliver jabs, blocks all those jabs,
25:25and doesn't count them, doesn't stop them,
25:26break them down, and fire back right away,
25:28Stanton can win this fight from the outside.
25:30That's what he needs to do.
25:31Oliver needs to block and count them.
25:33Not worry about all three.
25:34If you block them, take it right to him.
25:37Like that.
25:37Count the right hand from McCart.
25:41And it knocks Stanton back on his heels.
25:46And another good right hand,
25:48and Stanton holds on.
25:50That one got Stanton's attention.
26:02Stanton bounced off the warps in the left hand,
26:04and ties McCall up again.
26:07Good end of round three for Oliver McCall.
26:11Don't go away.
26:12We're coming back.
26:17There you see that right hand.
26:18Just a little short, straight right hand,
26:19right on the money,
26:20and McCall got Stanton's attention.
26:25But Stanton's still fighting a competitive fight.
26:27I still thought he outworked him that round, Barry.
26:29The end of the round was two or three clean blows by McCall,
26:31but for the majority of the round,
26:33two minutes plus,
26:34Stanton outworked and won the round.
26:37And I have to point out, too,
26:38that Oliver McCall really, for all intent,
26:41has had only one round,
26:43actually less than a round,
26:43a little over a half a round of works
26:45in September of 1995,
26:46when he lost the unanimous decision,
26:48and with it his title,
26:49to Frank Bruno.
26:51Yeah, the last fight was kind of a no fight.
26:53He came in for a right-hand fight,
26:55so win in the win column,
26:58another notch under your belt,
26:59but not a whole lot of work.
27:05That jab is going to be the key for Stanton.
27:07And it would be to his advantage, of course,
27:09to try to carry McCall into late rounds.
27:12See what McCall has.
27:22The crowd takes up a chant of boring, boring.
27:25I'm not sure I completely concur with that.
27:27I think Stanton's doing or trying to do
27:29what he feels he needs to do to win the fight.
27:31He can't get too brave against Oliver McCall.
27:33No, if he gets brave,
27:35it could cost him dearly.
27:36He has to be brave in certain points,
27:38but he has to pick his spots
27:39and not be careless about it.
27:46And in all honesty,
27:47Oliver should press him more.
27:48Make him make mistakes.
27:50Left-hand from Stanton.
27:59Chavez got to push him more.
28:00Make him work.
28:01Make the lightning man exhaust himself.
28:03Get him tired.
28:04All right, bang his arms, bang his body.
28:12Well, the one I got to say about James Stanton,
28:14he's giving himself the best opportunity
28:15to win the fight.
28:16Now, whether or not he's got enough horses
28:18remains to be seen.
28:20But he's got an idea.
28:29Outer cut the ring off pretty well,
28:30but the punches he threw just didn't seem to be in tune with his feet.
28:34Right now, he's not getting the timing down of Stanton.
28:37He's moving side to side pretty well.
29:01This is where Oliver's big problem is.
29:03He's getting low to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be.
29:06He's getting low to do nothing.
29:07He's falling asleep.
29:08In the middle of the fight.
29:09Exactly.
29:09Stanton just did more, and with that, he won the round.
29:12We'll be back.
29:15You've got a good look at Oliver McCall getting a pretty stern lecture at the front.
29:20Georgie Benton in the corner, saying do more, stick the jab, work off the jab.
29:27Round five.
29:33Also, Greg Page is in this corner, a former heavyweight who may come out of retirement.
29:36And Oliver said, well, if he does, I'll have to not let him train me anymore
29:39because I may have to fight him.
29:40Why does Greg Page look better as a trainer than he did as a fighter?
29:43No, no, no.
29:43Break in there, break in there.
29:44He's more aggressive as a trainer.
29:56He's a smaller man, work him, bang him.
30:10McCall, clearly a little stronger.
30:13That's what McCall needs to do.
30:15Use that jab, work some combinations.
30:16Not worry about that one big shot.
30:18Not worry about the Lennox Lewis right hand.
30:20That right hand may, in fact, be, in a small way, the worst thing that ever happened to him
30:24because he may zone in on it and tune out the rest of his boxing game.
30:28And he's a good fighter.
30:34Interesting thing about Stan, he's unranked right now.
30:37But before he ever fought at main event, he was ranked number 11 by the WBA.
30:42Now, tell me how that, of course, the WBA, I think they also had Simon Bolivar and Jean-Alice Mofranco
30:47ranked ahead of him.
30:49I think Peter McNeely was up there somewhere.
30:50I think he was, yeah.
30:51Oh, oh, oh, oh.
30:54Not to mention Judge Clayton in the middle there.
30:56Wow.
31:01Good left hand from McCall.
31:03See right here, McCall's got to work.
31:05Bang him.
31:06Stan's left as much.
31:07Sip Slipper's trying to block the shots.
31:08Trying to take some rest.
31:09We'll close and punch him there.
31:11Use the jab, but follow it with something.
31:13Wear the smaller man down.
31:14Don't give him the opportunity to escape and run around the ring box.
31:19All right, Ty, we're going to break it up.
31:21Let's go.
31:22Step out, Oliver.
31:30And once again, Stan, when he gets on the ropes, does the right thing.
31:33Ty's McCall up.
31:37And McCall likewise does the right thing.
31:39Leans on Stanton.
31:43You know what, though?
31:44In the anticipation of Stanton fleeing, McCall smuggled his own shot by leaping in over the floor.
31:49McCall, Steve, stayed outside and drew a nice combination.
31:52Jumped on him again.
31:52And again was the upshot that triggered it.
31:56See, the power and the weight and the strength now start to take effect.
31:59And that's going to be a big-time attrition factor for Stanton.
32:05Stanton's starting to breathe through his mouth a little bit.
32:08And that's the first sign of fatigue.
32:12Those were caught on the glove.
32:18Headed for the end of round number five.
32:20A much better round for Oliver McCall, who did exactly what his corner suggested he do.
32:25We're coming back.
32:25Let's go.
32:27They're clean.
32:29Discussion in the corner about whether or not they'll stop the fight.
32:32Let's see.
32:39Well, the fight's over.
32:42Bobby, we talked earlier about fighters going out on their shield.
32:47And here's the man who went out on his stool.
32:50Hey, hey, you're doing right, man.
32:52You're doing right, man.
32:54Then, they don't know.
32:56The fight wasn't that far apart.
32:59You know, he was making a reasonable count of himself.
33:01I guess the strength was too much.
33:02He realized it was a futile effort.
33:03But I'd say you take the shot.
33:09Discussion.
33:10It went on between Freddie Jenkins and James Stanton.
33:15Let's get up the center of the ring right now.
33:17And as soon as Jimmy Lennon, Jr. is ready, we will get the official announcement of the stoppage.
33:24There is a conversation going on right now between Jimmy Lennon, Jr. and Bill Connors, the referee.
33:28So, we'll have that for you in just a moment.
33:30But it was a very interesting discussion in the corner between rounds between James Stanton and Freddie Jenkins.
33:37It was clearly Stanton's decision.
33:39Absolutely.
33:39Jenkins said, give me one more round and I'll stop the fight.
33:42And Stanton said, I don't want to get hurt.
33:45And it's a conversation that was very rational.
33:47It was almost like there was a desk between them.
33:49It's a very, very interesting profession to pick if you don't want to ever get hurt.
33:53That's why I have to say.
33:54I'll be back.
33:56Stanton just flat ran out of gas when he mentioned the fact he was breathing through his mouth and puffing
34:00at the end of the last round.
34:01And that was all he had in the tank.
34:04It was just that simple.
34:05All right, let's get up the center of the ring now and we'll make it official with Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
34:08Jimmy.
34:09Good job, baby.
34:10Great.
34:14Ladies and gentlemen, the opponent in this bout unable to answer the bell to round number six.
34:19A referee in charge.
34:21Bill Connors stops the contest.
34:22The winner by way of technical knockout in round number six.
34:27Boomer heavyweight champion of the world, the Atomic Bull, Oliver McCall.
34:37Well, Oliver McCall is the winner and I think he would have rather put his man down and put his
34:43man out.
34:44But James Stanton decided that's it.
34:46I've had enough and McCall wins another.
34:48Back after this word from your local station.
34:53Oliver McCall has run his record to 28-6 and the waiting game continues now for Oliver McCall.
34:59But at least it's eased a little bit because he has another W on his record.
35:04A fight that was actually very close, Bobby.
35:06And that you really had the feeling that we're standing able to continue the fray.
35:11Who knows?
35:11You know what Oliver was doing was what we call slow walking him down.
35:14Keeping constant body and mental pressure on him.
35:17Got him tired.
35:18Started hitting with the big shots and that last round started to take its toll.
35:21Let's eavesdrop now in the corner.
35:22This is what went on between rounds between Freddie Jenkins and James Stanton.
35:28Now listen to this.
35:28And it really does.
35:29Sounds like these guys should be wearing a three-piece suit instead of in a boxing ring.
35:32Listen in.
35:33I hate him with some shots.
35:33Hey, I don't blame him.
35:35I'm not going to get hurt, man.
35:36I'm not going to get hurt, man.
35:39Give me one last time.
35:41Come on, man.
35:41I can't do no more.
35:42I don't want to get hurt.
35:43I can't do no more.
35:44I don't want to get hurt, man.
35:45I don't want to get hurt, man.
35:46I don't want to get hurt, man.
35:46I don't want to get hurt.
35:47Give me one round and I'll stop the clock.
35:48Come on, man.
35:49You want that one round?
35:50Huh?
35:51No.
35:51You want to let me know that.
35:54I ain't got no choice.
35:55You got one round.
35:56The only thing you're doing is slipping.
35:58Don't slip on the man.
36:00Don't slip on the man.
36:01Take it down.
36:01Just keep it alone.
36:03And so it was.
36:04And James Stanton just sat there when the bell rang.
36:07And that was that.
36:09And Stanton, a few minutes ago,
36:11said to some of his people in the ring,
36:12I'll be back.
36:13Don't worry about it.
36:14There'll be another day for me.
36:16But today was the day for this man, Oliver McCall.
36:18Once more, playing a waiting game,
36:20biding his time,
36:21waiting for his chance at Mike Tyson.
36:23In the meantime,
36:23he beats guys like James Stanton
36:25and like the man he beat the last time.
36:27We'll be back.
36:28We welcome you back.
36:29We take you down to the center of the ring
36:30where Eric Clemens is with the winner and friends.
36:33Eric?
36:34All right, Barry.
36:35Thank you very much.
36:36I'm here with the winner
36:37who's congratulating James Stanton behind us right now,
36:39Oliver McCall.
36:41Oliver,
36:41they did quite a bit of taunting at you there
36:43before the fight started.
36:44I don't know whether you paid attention
36:45to any of that or not,
36:46but what was the strategy
36:47to sum up the fight for us?
36:48Well, first of all,
36:49I'd like to say happy birthday to Miriam.
36:51Work at Nations Bank in Martinsville, Virginia.
36:53And shoot shots out to my favorite nephew,
36:56Greg, Gregory Thomas.
36:58And I hope you be well.
36:59And y'all take care.
37:00I'm in there.
37:00I hope you be out soon, Greg.
37:02To get back to this,
37:05it was taunting.
37:06You know, I'm used to it.
37:07You know,
37:08when you're used to a whole country taunting you
37:10in London with Bruno,
37:11this was just no comparison whatsoever.
37:15James Stanton came.
37:16He fought a gutsy fight.
37:18He's a pretty decent boxer.
37:19You know,
37:20he tried to go down to my body a bit,
37:22but I just kept my poise,
37:24took control,
37:25and I knew once I hit him with a good shot,
37:27I had him.
37:28I hit him with a couple of good shots,
37:29and I feel confident that I had a fight in control.
37:32Good enough.
37:33Oliver McCall,
37:34congratulations on the victory.
37:35Good luck here in the future
37:36until you get that other title shot.
37:37All right.
37:37Thank you very much.
37:38All right.
37:38All right.
37:39Let's go back upstairs to James Brown.
37:40JB?
37:41All right, Eric.
37:42Thank you very much.
37:43A little interesting to hear
37:44from the lips of James Stanton
37:45the fact that he didn't want to get hurt.
37:47That from a man whose nickname
37:48is the House of Pain,
37:49but in the bottom line,
37:51the right decision by the fighter indeed.
37:53All right, folks.
