00:01:41It can't get much closer than it has done over the last couple of years.

00:01:45Shane Byrne, Danny Buchan, and James Hayden have all played their part in the history and the success of BSB.

00:01:52Multiple race wins, all of you.

00:01:53Guys, who's your money on this year?

00:01:57I think we touched on it earlier on the show, didn't we?

00:01:59You know, you've got, really, I think you've got to be looking at Kyle Ryde, Bradley Ray, and Scott Redding.

00:02:04Three guys for me that stand out a little bit above the rest.

00:02:08Glenn Irwin's going to be there or thereabouts.

00:02:11Tough start to the season for him.

00:02:13He's just lined up, actually, on the back of the grid.

00:02:15The good news is they've got that nitrous competition, Ducati, back together for him after a little tumbling qualifying.

00:02:21So he's going to be on the grid, which is great.

00:02:23But there's going to be so many others that are going to be competitive.

00:02:25You know, the two Hondas are going to be competitive.

00:02:27You know, the promoters, they're looking fantastic.

00:02:30So, yeah, there's going to be plenty of people to fight for race wins this year, for sure.

00:02:33Yeah, the big difference, obviously, for Kyle Ryde, Danny, is that he starts on a Ducati this year rather than

00:02:38the Yamaha last year.

00:02:39We've touched on it a couple of times already today.

00:02:41He didn't win a race for the first five rounds last year.

00:02:44He went on to win the title.

00:02:45Can he afford to do that this year?

00:02:47Yeah, I mean, it's difficult to say.

00:02:48I mean, he's spent a lot of time, obviously, on that bike over winter, albeit a road bike version.

00:02:52And obviously, they've got the race bike fairly late.

00:02:54But, you know, he's come to Alton Park.

00:02:56It's never been his massive, you know, it's not been his super strong track.

00:02:59And he's, you know, done some phenomenal lap times already.

00:03:01But saying that, going into a race, it's a little bit different, isn't it?

00:03:04You know, the tactics are a little bit different.

00:03:06The other guys, you know, are going to be equally as fast over race pace, as Brad said before.

00:03:11So, yeah, I mean, it's going to be, it's not going to be easy for any of them.

00:03:14It's a long championship.

00:03:15You know, you can lose the championship in the first round.

00:03:17You can't always win it.

00:03:18So, yeah, it's going to be an interesting one.

00:03:19We know that he'll play the long game.

00:03:21James, he always does.

00:03:23Over race distance, judging how a bike performs and how it uses tyres and all that kind of stuff is

00:03:29something that can only come with time, really.

00:03:31Yeah, that's right.

00:03:32They've done enough laps, you know, throughout qualifying that little bit of testing that they've had that I think they'll

00:03:37kind of have a rough idea of that.

00:03:38The Ducati's normally quite good in the way it does its power, being a big V-twin, the way it

00:03:43pulses.

00:03:44But we know the Yamaha's good on tyres.

00:03:46So, I think it's always really interesting this first race.

00:03:50It's really nervy.

00:03:51It's a bit cagey.

00:03:53You know, everyone sort of comes in and really it's a time when you actually, it's, you know, you see

00:03:57exactly what's happening.

00:03:59James just hit the nail bang on the head there, right?

00:04:01One thing we haven't talked about is the fact there is a new SC1 rear tyre, completely different compound.

00:04:06You know, World Superbike, the tyre's been developed there, the performance has come up.

00:04:10It's closer to the zero that they had last year than perhaps a harder one.

00:04:14But as James said, you know, there's guys that are on a new bike, you know, not done a full

00:04:18-on race run, but everybody has that new rear tyre and there's only one of them.

00:04:22Okay, well, we're going to find out soon.

00:04:24The nerves are jangling here on the grid behind us.

00:04:26But Kyle cut a very calm figure when he spoke to James at the start of the weekend.

00:04:32Kyle, poor position.

00:04:34You've been quick all the way through testing.

00:04:36Seemed to have clicked with this Ducati better than we ever thought and probably you thought.

00:04:40Going well, isn't it?

00:04:41Yeah, obviously, all through winter, the job was to turn up at round one and not get embarrassed swapping bikes.

00:04:46So, we managed to do that.

00:04:47That was the first objective.

00:04:49Yeah, I've just really enjoyed it.

00:04:50Obviously, we've been lucky with the weather.

00:04:51I've not rode this bike in the wet yet.

00:04:53And obviously, I'm in it down last night.

00:04:55If that had come now, I might have been in trouble.

00:04:56I don't know.

00:04:57But two days on the bike at testing went really well.

00:05:00Ended up fastest.

00:05:00Put it on pole position now.

00:05:01So, everything's green box up to you.

00:05:03You were never going to get embarrassed at this job, lad.

00:05:12We never quite know what we're going to get.

00:05:14But at least it looks like it's going to stay dry for the first race.

00:05:16Yeah, it's dry.

00:05:17There's a bit of a breeze, but nothing too heavy.

00:05:19So, you know, conditions are good.

00:05:21And it's exactly what you want the first one of the year.

00:05:23You don't want a half and half sort of walk and mix.

00:05:26So, I'm glad everyone's out on the same stuff.

00:05:28It's raining where I am anyway up here.

00:05:30I've got a wet forehead.

00:05:32Up in the clouds.

00:05:33Yeah, I don't know if that's where Shaky's been talking to me or not.

00:05:35But it's definitely raining up here.

00:05:36Yeah.

00:05:37We might get a bit of a mixture tomorrow, it looks like, Shaky.

00:05:40But, again, for someone like Kyle, really important to remember, you can't win the championship bid, but you can lose

00:05:45it.

00:05:46Do you know what?

00:05:46They were the exact words I just went in and said to Glenn Irwin.

00:05:48You know, he's had a really, really tough start to the weekend.

00:05:50Glenn was my teammate.

00:05:52Great guy.

00:05:52You know, puts a lot of effort into his racing.

00:05:55You know, switched to nitrous competitions halfway through last year.

00:05:58You know, stuck with them.

00:06:00They've got the new Ducati.

00:06:01It hasn't gone well at all, especially this weekend.

00:06:03And I just went into the garage a minute ago.

00:06:05I saw his bike was ready to go.

00:06:06And I said, listen, mate, you can't win the championship here, but you can sure as hell lose it.

00:06:09So, take your time.

00:06:11You're on the back of the grid.

00:06:12You know, there's a lot of laps.

00:06:13You know, a lot of people to do, a lot of learning, and we'll see who comes out.

00:06:16And two more races tomorrow as well, of course.

00:06:18Let's get back out onto the grid.

00:06:22Brad, a lot of talk about you and two others before the season started.

00:06:27Middle of the front row.

00:06:28This is good enough for you to get going, isn't it?

00:06:31Yeah, definitely.

00:06:31That's always the aim.

00:06:33A nice front row start to start off the year is always good.

00:06:36It's always interesting going into the first race of the year.

00:06:39We don't know what everyone's got.

00:06:41I was just going to say, you kind of do, because you've tested a bit and you've run strong.

00:06:44But it's still a little bit of an unknown, isn't it?

00:06:46Yeah, that's it.

00:06:48Obviously, the Ducatis are faster at the start than what we thought.

00:06:52But, yeah, like always, Jim, we'll give it our best.

00:07:03Alongside somebody we've not spoken about yet, James, Leon Haslam.

00:07:06A winner here multiple times in the past and looking fit and hungry and ready to fight for this one

00:07:12Yeah, very much so.

00:07:13Obviously, a new motorcycle for them.

00:07:14He is the latest Ducati.

00:07:16It's his second year with the team.

00:07:18And we've seen him win round here.

00:07:19He was one of the only people that beat Brad and Cole all year.

00:07:23So, he's definitely not, you know, front row as well, looking good.

00:07:27He might be the elder statesman, shall we say, but he's as hungry as anyone.

00:07:32Yeah, he's just like a dog.

00:07:34Like, you know, you can never discount him, can you?

00:07:36You were going to call him a dog then, weren't you?

00:07:38Yeah, dog, dog.

00:07:39I don't know.

00:07:39He's just like...

00:07:40A little bulldog.

00:07:41I know what you mean.

00:07:42Tenacious.

00:07:42He gets on everything.

00:07:43Yeah, tenacious.

00:07:44Like, he gets on any bike and, you know, the back wheel could be put in the front, but he'll

00:07:48still get out and grind a good result out.

00:07:50And, you know, the fact he's on the front row after not feeling overly confident with the amount of time

00:07:54they've had is probably a little bit of a concern for everybody else.

00:07:57And he might be a bit of an underdog.

00:07:58Everyone's talked about Kyle and Brad, but he's there and, you know, he ain't going to let him go, is

00:08:03he?

00:08:03So, I'm looking forward to seeing that.

00:08:05It is, of course, the 30th anniversary of British Superbikes.

00:08:09They're celebrating it here at Alton Park this week and a few old faces out on the grid as well.

00:08:13It's nice to see the likes of Terry Reimer out there.

00:08:15Danny, he used to look after you as well, didn't he, Tell?

00:08:17Yeah, when everything was going bad, I used to call Tell in because I just needed a bit of help,

00:08:21a bit of support.

00:08:22But, yeah, he's...

00:08:23And I think when I was taller as well, we used to just talk about, you know, being on the

00:08:27taller side.

00:08:28The weather up there.

00:08:28Yeah, just talk about the weather, basically.

00:08:29He was my first teammate when I got two British Superbikes.

00:08:34So, with Suzuki back in 98.

00:08:36So, yeah, he's a great guy, isn't he?

00:08:37Yeah, he's mega.

00:08:39You know, he's really cool.

00:08:40And speaking of tenacious, there's a few lads out there that you went bar to bar with over the years,

00:08:46James.

00:08:46Yeah, very much.

00:08:47So, yeah, I mean, it's great.

00:08:49I mean, 30 years of BSB, that's crazy.

00:08:52Sort of time rushes by and being there for 28 years of it, it's scary.

00:08:57Don't tell anyone.

00:08:58Where were you in 96, Shane?

00:09:01Do you know, 96 was my first ever race.

00:09:02I had my first ever race in 1996 at Browns Acher, Bemzy meeting on a ZXR 400.

00:09:07And, yeah, it all kicked off from there.

00:09:08I won that one and, yeah, done all right.

00:09:11And the rest is history.

00:09:13Any other dark horses for today's race, James, that we should be looking at?

00:09:18I think maybe Max Cook on the remota.

00:09:20Yeah, that's what I was going to say.

00:09:22All right, we'll take the moment now to enjoy the national anthem ahead of this 30th anniversary season.

00:10:04Yeah, beautifully done there by a marching band from the British Army.

00:10:26and sets the scene nicely.

00:10:29Like you said, bank holiday weekend, BSB is back, nothing quite like it.

00:10:34Yeah, really looking forward to it.

00:10:36It's just that sort of that unknown, that nerves of the first race of the year.

00:10:40A great crowd out there as well coming to see it, packed out the back,

00:10:44and hopefully we should be able to do some really good racing.

00:10:48Yeah, it's always, you know, the first race of the year,

00:10:49you know, you're driving in the gates on the Thursday, Friday,

00:10:52and it's full of excitement, you know, it's all the emotions,

00:10:54and lining up on the grid there for the first race of the year is even more exciting.

00:10:58So, yeah, know what everyone's going through, and I'm certainly excited anyway.

00:11:01Does nerves ever go away, James?

00:11:04They go away when the weather's bad.

00:11:05I'm quite happy doing this job when the weather's bad

00:11:07and we see, like, you know, half and half conditions or wet conditions,

00:11:10but on days like this, you know, James said it's pretty much perfect conditions,

00:11:14you know, it's nice and cool, track temperature will be around 20-odd degrees,

00:11:17I reckon, which is perfect for these bikes, perfect for these tyres,

00:11:20and, yeah, to get out there and have a roll around Alton Park right now

00:11:23would be great, wouldn't it?

00:11:26All right, let's get back out onto the grid then

00:11:28and catch up with the race director, Stuart Higgs, is with Witt.

00:11:32Stuart, you've just been chatting and having up here

00:11:34some of the riders that were in the original BSB Champions League 96,

00:11:37but you've been involved the whole time.

00:11:39Yeah, I can feel every single second of it right now, Witt,

00:11:42but, yeah, it's pretty emotional.

00:11:44I mean, it is a big landmark.

00:11:45I mean, you just stop and think of all the races,

00:11:50all the champions, all the race winners,

00:11:52and just every part of it.

00:11:54I mean, we did a show reel a couple of days ago that went out,

00:11:58just trying to put in three and a half minutes,

00:12:0014 magic moments,

00:12:02and, you know, the cutting room floor was full of stuff

00:12:04that deserved to be in there,

00:12:05but, no, I just dedicate this moment

00:12:07where we're just counting down the start to this anniversary season

00:12:11to thank absolutely everybody who's participated,

00:12:14who's watched, who's been part of the championship,

00:12:16who's been a marshal, who's been any role whatsoever.

00:12:20You have played a part in something that is so special

00:12:23and means so much to so many people,

00:12:25so thank you very much.

00:12:26I've loved every minute of it, been part of it.

00:12:37Scott Redden, back in BSB full-time this year,

00:12:40shaky, looking racy.

00:12:42He looks like he's up for it this weekend.

00:12:45Yeah, definitely.

00:12:45He's had a completely different approach this year,

00:12:47actually, to his racing.

00:12:49You know, Scott was one of the guys

00:12:50that would go off to Spain

00:12:51and just spend all winter riding around on a street bike

00:12:54and, you know, doing millions and millions of miles

00:12:56on basically just racetracks,

00:12:58just riding and riding and riding.

00:12:59But he went away, he went back to California

00:13:01to the in-laws and spent the whole winter

00:13:05basically pedaling a pushbike everywhere

00:13:06and, you know, staying super sharp and super fit

00:13:08and said that he wanted to come back to BSB this year

00:13:12for a full season, but, you know,

00:13:14desperate and hungry to get back on a motorbike.

00:13:16You know, there's no better feeling,

00:13:17I said it a minute ago,

00:13:17there's no better feeling than roaring around here

00:13:19and, you know, the likes of Kyle

00:13:21and some of the other guys have done a million laps already.

00:13:23You know, this is nothing new to them.

00:13:24It's just the first race of the season.

00:13:26But, you know, he's really excited about getting going.

00:13:27Yeah, first race of 2026 then on the way.

00:13:31On this day 30 years ago,

00:13:33Return of the Mack was top of the UK charts

00:13:36and, fittingly, Niall Mack was the early leader

00:13:38of the inaugural British Superbike Championship.

00:13:41But it was James Whittam himself

00:13:42that took the race one win here

00:13:44at Alton Park in round three.

00:13:46Who's going to take the honours today?

00:13:57lifting the trophy to become back-to-back champion.

00:14:01BSB 2026 is on.

00:14:04It's the 30th anniversary.

00:14:07258 race victories have come from this grid alone

00:14:11with five different champions.

00:14:13But it's the double champion,

00:14:15back-to-backer,

00:14:16who's on pole here today

00:14:18with Kyle Ride starting on the Nitrous Competitions Ducati.

00:14:21There are some iffy clouds lurking around,

00:14:24but hopefully they steer clear

00:14:27for the 18 laps we've got ahead.

00:14:28It's Ride, Ray, and Haslam

00:14:29who are your top three.

00:14:33Row two, headed by Max Cook.

00:14:36Storm Stacey and Scott Redding

00:14:38will play a part, surely, on row two as well.

00:14:40There are some big hitters further down the grid

00:14:42that have work to do.

00:14:43Talbot, the rookie,

00:14:44his seventh outstanding from him

00:14:46and his first qualifying session of the season so far

00:14:49out of Skinner and Vickers.

00:14:51And as you look down through the order,

00:14:52you'll see plenty of BSB race winners

00:14:55that on their day can pack a punch.

00:14:58None more so than a treble winner here,

00:15:01Glenn Irwin, who's had a nightmare weekend.

00:15:03James will have to start second from last on the grid.

00:15:05Yeah, right at the back of the grid,

00:15:06through no fault of his own a lot of the time,

00:15:08actually, he was trying to come in.

00:15:10He'd got his leg out.

00:15:11He was coming in,

00:15:12and it indicated to the riders

00:15:13that he was coming early in the lap.

00:15:15That says to me he had a mechanical problem.

00:15:17He wasn't decided at the end of the lap to come in.

00:15:19So, yeah, and got pushed a little bit wide,

00:15:22got caught out by Håhler

00:15:25and coming up the inside of him and went down.

00:15:26And that just capped off

00:15:28what has been a disastrous weekend so far for Glenn.

00:15:31Track temperature has plummeted a little.

00:16:17We're ready to go racing for the first time in 2026.

00:16:20It's eyes on the lights, and away we go.

00:16:24Not a brilliant start from Max Cook, unfortunately,

00:16:27but a really good start from Brad Ray.

00:16:30Kyle Ride has been bumped back a couple of places.

00:16:33He drops to fourth.

00:16:33He might even drop to fifth,

00:16:34but Ray got off the line perfectly.

00:16:37Yeah, he did.

00:16:37Also, Scott Redding got a reasonably good launch.

00:16:41Down into Cascades for the first time.

00:16:43Joe Talbot just a little wide on entry,

00:16:45but they're all through it safely by the looks of things.

00:16:47Brad Ray, number 28 leads on the McCams Yamaha from Leon Haslam

00:16:50and Storm Stacey up in third.

00:16:52Yeah, we expected Storm to be quick coming into this meeting.

00:16:54He loves this place.

00:16:56Really gelling well with that Badham's Ducati.

00:17:01One or two riders keeping their powder dry

00:17:03over the course of this weekend so far.

00:17:06I want to play it safe.

00:17:06Just want to leave here with some solid points

00:17:08because it's a long championship.

00:17:10One or two others in the pack here

00:17:11who don't care what bit about that

00:17:13and can sense an opportunity.

00:17:15Exactly that, yeah.

00:17:16When you get people being sort of circumspect

00:17:17and looking at the long season ahead,

00:17:20then you get others trying to make an advantage of that.

00:17:23Kyle Ryder's put to third now.

00:17:24Yeah, nice move, that.

00:17:25Yeah.

00:17:26Down into his ease.

00:17:27The three men that on paper were listed out

00:17:30for the championship were the three R's,

00:17:32Ray, Ryde and Reading.

00:17:34Reading at the moment in fifth place.

00:17:37Max Cook in sixth.

00:17:38Then it's Skinner, Jackson, Vickers, Talbot inside the top ten.

00:17:42And there is Max Cook, number 30,

00:17:43just up behind the Hager TBM Ducati of Scott Reddick.

00:17:47Yeah, Joe Talbot qualified seventh.

00:17:48It was brilliant, but he didn't get off the line.

00:17:50It was a terrible start for Joe.

00:17:52Winner of the sprint race last year, Leon Haslam,

00:17:54in second last year.

00:17:55We saw a proper battle, actually, between Ray and Haslam.

00:17:58Ryde was involved in that in stages as well.

00:18:02Here comes the move.

00:18:10It was Haslam.

00:18:13So that's Leon Haslam, who leads through turn one,

00:18:18with Brad Ray now in second.

00:18:19This group of six are already just starting to branch away a bit

00:18:24from Rory Skinner in seventh.

00:18:26It's to Ireland, Ben, we go.

00:18:27Storm Stacey now thinking about retaliating on Kyle Rye,

00:18:31but you're not going to do it the long way round into Shell Oils.

00:18:34You never know with Storm Stacey.

00:18:37Yeah, anything's possible.

00:18:39With Storm there, of course, switching from BMW 2 to Cati 4 this year,

00:18:43which you would think would mean he'd be more consistent

00:18:45across the board over the course of the season.

00:18:47Yeah, one of the criticisms of the BMW is the fact

00:18:51that it's a bit inconsistent.

00:18:52It can be perfect one circuit, and then you go to another.

00:18:55It doesn't work.

00:18:55Here comes Kyle Rye, slides up the inside of Brad Ray.

00:19:00Good move.

00:19:01Completely different bike to the Yamaha that he's ridden in the past as well.

00:19:04I mean, he's got that poke now, hasn't he, underneath him?

00:19:06Yeah, the Ducati should be a little bit quicker,

00:19:08but it's a different layout, different weight distribution.

00:19:10The way the bike works is completely different.

00:19:12It'll feel completely different.

00:19:14He said that the Yamaha is ridden for four years.

00:19:16He knew exactly what it was going to do inside and out,

00:19:19and in some areas the Yamaha's a little bit better,

00:19:22but the Ducati overall, and given it's a little bit quicker

00:19:25and with a bit more punch out the corners,

00:19:26he said you can make more mistakes and get away with it.

00:19:29Storm Stacey.

00:19:30He's having a good run here, isn't he?

00:19:31Yeah, he is, yeah.

00:19:31But you just see one or two riders have got a couple of laps under their belt

00:19:34and are starting to get themselves geared up now for a proper challenge.

00:19:39Through turn one we go, then it's Leon Haslam for a ride,

00:19:42and Stacey, Brad Ray fourth, Scott Redding in fifth.

00:19:45Max Cook has just given himself a couple of laps to warm into it as well

00:19:48because he has been a bit hot-headed here at Alton in the past,

00:19:51in the opening couple of laps.

00:19:53Yes.

00:19:53Rory Skinner has closed on to the group as well.

00:19:56He's brought Ryan Vickers and Lee Jackson with him.

00:19:59There we see Talbot, Lee Jackson as well.

00:20:02What an effort, is this from Talbot?

00:20:03I was just going to say, this is massive, good effort from Talbot.

00:20:07This is his first proper go.

00:20:08Had a couple of wild cards through runners getting injured last year,

00:20:12but this is his first proper go.

00:20:14He's riding a little bit injured.

00:20:15Good effort, lad.

00:20:16I went and saw him earlier on today and said,

00:20:19how are you feeling?

00:26:31If I said to you, James,

00:26:32at the end of last year,

00:26:33we know how talented Kyle is

00:26:35and he's proven that now

00:26:36over the last two years.

00:26:37He's a double champion.

00:26:38But the switch to Ducati,

00:26:39if you'd have said

00:26:40that he'd have been this strong.

00:26:41This early.

00:26:41You'd have been quite surprised.

00:26:42Absolutely, and I think he would.

00:26:44But he's put the hours in.

00:26:45He's been testing in Spain

00:26:47on a road-going version of this V4R.

00:26:50He's also been racing in Australia.

00:26:52So he's put the yards in.

00:26:55So, good on him.

00:26:56And, of course, we should just remember

00:26:58that both the likes of Ride and Ray,

00:27:00who are a similar age,

00:27:02are kind of in their peak now.

00:27:03They're about to arrive

00:27:03in their peak, really.

00:27:04In the UK, unlike Spain, Italy,

00:27:08riders mature at different ages.

00:27:10Yeah.

00:27:10But they're still getting better.

00:27:12They are getting better.

00:27:13And remember, they're at the peak,

00:27:15probably in terms of their physical ability

00:27:18to do this, late 20s.

00:27:19I think that's where you are.

00:27:21That's a good mix of kind of youthful aggression

00:27:24and kind of getting a bit older

00:27:26and using your mouse a little bit.

00:27:28But remember, they've been racing on tarmac

00:27:30since they were five.

00:27:33So that's a long time.

00:27:34That's a lot of experience.

00:27:36Max Cook with another 133.

00:27:37No one can match the pace of Kyle Ride,

00:27:39but Cook is the man who's next best.

00:27:41Yeah, he is, yeah.

00:27:44And we've just said there's no shortages feet

00:27:46from that Kawasaki engine, Bermorton.

00:27:49I'd like to get a sort of idea of difference

00:27:52in the bikes.

00:27:52Now he's with the riders in front,

00:27:55one's on a Nikati, that's Haslam,

00:27:56one's on a Yamaha, that's Brad Ray.

00:27:58It looks to me when I've been out on circuit watching

00:28:00that he can run it in from wider

00:28:02with more confidence to turn.

00:28:03If you run it in from really wide,

00:28:05which is where you want to be,

00:28:06if the bike just doesn't steer

00:28:07and get you into that corner,

00:28:08well, you're going to miss the apex

00:28:09and you've got to allow for that.

00:28:11And he's able to, I think,

00:28:12just be more confident

00:28:14as he comes off the brakes,

00:28:15transition from brakes to turning in.

00:28:17I know these are completely different

00:28:18to the little sort of Grand Prix bikes

00:28:20that Max Cook grew up on,

00:28:21but they were stiff chassis as well.

00:28:23And I just wonder if that's played a part.

00:28:24Yeah, very different,

00:28:25but given, yeah,

00:28:27there comes Brad Ray past Leon Haslam,

00:28:30given that this is a completely different class,

00:28:32different weight and all the rest of it,

00:28:33they're probably as near to that

00:28:34as you can get in this class, I think.
